Elevate Reading!
Exciting New Changes to Happen at Eureka Public Library
On April 9, 1978, the trustees of the Eureka Public Library held an open house to celebrate the addition
of a new two-level building which would more than double the existing library space. When the new
addition was first opened to the public in February 1978, the lower level was not yet complete due to
lack of funds. At that time, Librarian Ruth Roth said she hoped the level could be completed within the
next year and that “youth” materials would be moved into this space, as well as the community having
a space for larger group meetings.
Nearly four decades have passed since that exciting day in the history of Eureka Public Library! During
these years many stories have been read, many summer reading programs held, and many children’s
books, recorded books and VHS tapes have been checked out to children. And many of those who
came as children have since brought their own children into the library!
To provide better service for library users, the EPLD Board of Trustees has made the decision to add an
elevator, making access easier for the children’s collection and programs on the lower level.
Information was gathered from several sources covering different types of elevators and lifts, as well as
the limited options considering structure of the current building. Money has been set aside to help
with this project, and fundraising events are planned
to help with the cost of the elevator. In addition to the
cost of the elevator and construction, changes will
need to be made in the collection and circulation areas
around the elevator entrances on both floors. The
fundraising campaign to help with these changes has
been appropriately named, Elevate Reading.

Library now offers disc cleaning services
The library is offering a new service. For 50 cents per disc, the library will clean your DVD, CD, BluRay, and game discs. The library’s EcoPro2 cleaner will remove fine and shallow scratches which can
disrupt disc function. The library does not guarantee complete repair as deeper scratches cannot be
eliminated with cleaning. Drop off your discs anytime during the library’s open hours. Depending on
staff availability, discs can be cleaned while you wait.
Friends of the Eureka Public Library Fall Shopping Trip
The annual Friends of the Eureka Public Library District annual bus trip to the Chicago Premium
Outlet Mall will be Tuesday, October 11. The cost is $50 per person, payable in advance. Space is
limited, so call the library to reserve your seat soon!
Congratulations, Melita Williams!
Melita Williams was the winner of the “Read for the Win” adult
summer reading program drawing! She received $75 worth of Eureka
Business Association gift checks. Melita was one of 76 adults that
registered for summer reading. Each person read a minimum of two
hours a week. As an added challenge, readers were encouraged to
read 1K or 3K pages during the six-week program. Eighteen adults met
the challenge—and read 46,238 pages! Check out our challenge board
recognizing each of these outstanding readers! The top adult page
reader was Ashley Welker with 5,567 pages.
Young Adults also participated in the summer reading program. The two drawing winners were Gavin
Knapp, who won a $50 gift card and a journal, and Seth Nofsinger, who won three books, ear phones,
and an Eureka Hornet bag. Five young adults tracked the number of pages they read, which totaled
19,549 pages. The top page reader was Kevin Huber with 9,570 pages.
Congratulations to all our winners and thank you to everyone for participating!

News From The Children’s Library
A BIG SUMMER THANK YOU!
We’re still taking in book logs, so won’t have a total number of books to report until
next month. But a big THANK YOU goes out to: all of our readers, the parents who
encouraged and helped them, our super staff and volunteers at the library, our
terrific guest readers and program presenters, Mrs. Ryan and Davenport Elementary
staff for sharing space with us, and our partners for prizes: McDonald’s, Uncle Bob’s
Ice Cream, The Cornbelters, Monicals, Texas Roadhouse, Meatheads, Dairy Queen,
Peoria Chiefs, Taco Bell, Chick-Fil-A and Pizza Hut. Summer reading is truly a Eureka
area community affair!
READING – DIG IT!
Watch for more information on “Reading –
Dig It!”, a reading program to be held in
September and October. Readers ages 3
through 6th grade will read (or listen to) a
variety of books and keep track on a book
log.
Library Little Stars”

Elevate Reading! (continued from front cover)
Library Director Ann Reeves shared the story behind Elevate Reading. “Elevate Reading was a suggestion
from a library user who heard about the campaign through her attendance at a Friends of the Library
meeting. I took her suggestion to the fundraising committee, and we all agreed it encompassed much
more than the addition of an elevator in the building! It shares the idea we want to portray as a public
library to our community. When you elevate something, you lift it up, value it, or hold it in high esteem.
We love the idea that reading is valued in our community. Research continues to confirm how
fundamental reading aloud is in the development of babies and young children. We also know the
importance of learning to read and comprehend in early school years. An indicator of a strong
community is valuing skills that provide future generations what they will need thrive and compete in the
world. Those skills should include a good education, and that typically begins very young, with books and
reading. Elevate Reading is a great message and one we are excited to share.”
Keep watching as the construction project will go to bid soon, and building construction could begin in
mid-Fall.

The Eureka Public Library has been selected as a winner in the 2016-17 Abraham Lincoln Book Award
grant competition. The grant awards a twenty-book set of the “Lincoln books” to each winning library.
The library will partner with Eureka High School staff “to encourage high school students to read for
pleasure and to become lifelong readers.” The award is named after former President Abraham Lincoln,
an avid reader and noted author, and is sponsored by ISLMA (Illinois School Library Media Association)
and administered by the ALHSBA steering committee. Students will have the opportunity to hear book
talks by faculty, staff, and librarians, and read their way through the list of titles chosen by Illinois
students and librarians. Voting will take place state-wide in February to choose the most popular book
on the list – the 2017 Abraham Lincoln Award Winner.
