Still
I

increasingly cynical in recent years.
Corruption, scandal, arrogance, waste,

me distrustful of leadership on both
sides of the aisle. Forget being
Democrat or Republican and do what’s
Associate Pastor
best for the country! I recognize that’s
a gross oversimplification, since what
Rev. David Gira

best may well be polar opposites.
Still, we don’t have to be Mr. Smith to
know that much is amiss in
Minister of Music
Washington, DC. What can we do?
Rev. Tony Argo
As persons of faith, what can you and
[email protected]
I do?
Do we? Again, I don’t want to
oversimplify. We know the
importance of military superiority in a
world of terrorism. We also know
there is a higher power. Why else
would we sing, “God bless America!”
Too often you and I forget our own
secret weapon in the ongoing battle
between good and evil, right and
wrong: prayer. Criticizing
government is a precious freedom we
use to hold our elected leaders
accountable, but imagine if the
nation’s Christians spent the greater
part of their time and energy praying
for our President, the Supreme Court,
and Congress than complaining about
them. “Those who put their trust in
the Lord shall stand,” declares the
psalmist, “those who do not will
collapse and fall.” Do we believe that?
Then let’s become prayer warriors for
the leaders of this great land.
One of my favorite prayers is stanza
three of America the Beautiful:
Consider these lines from the Psalms:

A king is not saved by his great army;
a soldier is not delivered by his

the war horse is a vain hope for

Some boast of chariots, and some of

we boast of the name of the Lord our
God.
O beautiful for patriot dream

thy liberty in law.

Mission: To transform members and non-members into authentic disciples of Jesus Christ
Thank you!
A big thank you for making me feel SO SPECIAL
with your love gifts, best wishes AND a song just
for me. Thank you for the friendship and support
that you have given me over the past years. I will
see you on the other side of the kitchen, minus the
apron, starting June 17th. I plan to travel later in
the year using the Love gift to visit my son's family
in Spain. See you in church!
Barbara
Reminder: There will be no WEF during the summer months. We look forward to seeing you again in the fall! P.S. If you missed Woody's song, you missed your
chance to see Woody as a country music singer!
Disciple Bible Study and Christian Believer Graduates
Bible Study is an extremely important part of the life of Haymount UMC as we continue
in our mission of creating authentic disciples of Jesus Christ. Please take courage from
those who have committed to journey together this past year through the scriptures,
growing in knowledge and allowing God to shape their lives to conform more nearly to
Christ’s likeness. Congratulations, fellow sojourners of the Bible!

A Christmas to Remember: Thank You from Curamericas!
Curamericas Global is extremely grateful for the generous gift from Haymount United Methodist
Church. This financial support adds to a larger pool of funding that makes it possible for us to carry
on efforts in providing clean water and improving sanitation conditions in 90 villages in North Central
Liberia.
As of the end of April, approximately a quarter of the funds provided by your church helped build 7
latrines and rehabilitated 10 more. Two new water wells were dug and two additional wells were
rehabilitated. Educational sessions are a crucial component to this work as they not only ensure
proper utilization and maintenance of the wells and latrines, but also help sustain hygiene practices.
Over 400 people participated in sessions to learn about hand washing and waste disposal, as well as
proper water treatment and storage.
This comprehensive approach is well illustrated by Mr. Edwin Zombah, Tudin Town Chief, as he
related: “Our community had a lot of problems with diarrhea in 2004 when another organization
installed a hand pump for us. Even with the pump in the
town, people continued to get sick from diarrhea, especially
children, who sometimes ended up dying. The situation got
worse when the pump broke. We were then regular visitors to
the clinics and hospitals in the county until the Nehnwaa Wat
-San Team repaired the pump. Since then we realized that
having a safe water supply alone is not enough. Keeping
water clean, washing hands with soap, having a place for
waste and general cleanliness help the community. We no
longer have problems with diarrhea and we are grateful to the
Nehnwaa Family for providing safe drinking water and the
knowledge to improve our community.”

Bible Readings and Prayers for the Month
July 3: Thanks for Grace and Mercy
Gen. 24: 34-38, 42-49, 58-67; Ps. 45: 10-17 or 72; Rom. 7: 15-25a; Matt. 11: 16-19, 25-30
“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Romans 7:15
Lord, how many times have we made this same cry to You? We vow that we will not do, think, or
say, etc. again, but find ourselves doing exactly what we hate. Please, Father, help us to realize we
cannot do it ourselves. We are totally dependent upon You and the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ.
Please help us to focus on Jesus, remembering what He has done. As Paul says in Romans 8,
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ
Jesus the law of the spirit of life sets us free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8: 1-2). What a
powerful and wonderful thing You have done for us, for we were powerless against our sinful nature.
But Christ Jesus is not powerless. He came as a sin offering …”that the righteous requirements of the
law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the
Spirit.”- Rom. 8:4. Thank You, O God, for grace and mercy.
July 10: Seek Godliness
Gen. 25: 19-34; Ps. 119: 105-112 or Ps. 25; Rom. 8: 1-11
“Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.” Romans 8:8
Lord, please take control of our sinful nature and help us to release our desires, motives and actions
to You. May we submit to You totally allowing Your Spirit to kill completely the desires of the body
that hinder Christ from living in us for the glory of God. Fill us with the desire to yield to You so that
we have no desire or time for the unrighteous flesh. As Your Spirit that raised Christ from the dead
gives life to our mortal bodies through Your Spirit, may we glorify You in body, soul and spirit.
Give us the desire to search out Your word to find the wonderful truths that dwell there. May we
desire to yield to them for godly living. Help us to be faithful to live and spread these truths that they
may capture the hearts that do not know You. Lord, it is our desire to please You, our Redeemer and
Master.
July 17: Search our Hearts
Gen. 22: 10-19; Ps. 130: 1-12, 23-24; Romans 8: 12-25; Matt. 13: 24-30, 36-43
“When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place.’” Genesis 28: 16
Lord, after Jacob deceived his father and angered his brother, his mother, Rebekah, planned and
helped him flee from Beersheba for she feared for his life. He stopped for the night and had a dream
in which God promised to bless him mightily. When Jacob awoke, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in
this place.” O Lord, how we often miss this truth. God is all around us, but we miss His presence
because we are too busy and too absorbed with self and things of the world. Actually, many times we
are just not interested enough to look or listen for You. In Romans 8:13, You remind us that if we
“live according to the sinful nature, we will die; but if by the spirit we put to death the misdeeds of
the body, we will live.” Lord, in our finite minds it seems that Jacob was blessed in spite of his evil
deeds. Help us to remember that You look at the heart. You searched his heart and knew that he
cherished the things of God. Lord, may You find a love for You when You search our hearts.
July 24: May We Rejoice for What God Has Done
Gen. 29: 15-28; Ps. 105: 1-11, 45b; Rom. 8: 26-39; Matt. 13: 31-33, 44: 52
Lord, when we read our passage from Romans 8: 26-39, we want to shout with joy. How good it is to
know how much You seek and love us “who have been called according to Your purpose.” Father,
You have justified and glorified us, not for what we have done, but for what You have done. Lord,
You have made us more than conquerors. Paul wrote in Romans 8:38 that he was convinced “that
neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
neither height nor death nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of
God that is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.” Father, how can we ever fear or turn away from such love,
such certainty? Praise You, O God, from the depths of our souls. “Glory to Your holy name; let the
hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.” – Ps. 101: 3.
July 31: Speak Truth
Gen. 32: 22-31; Ps. 17: 1-7, 15; Rom. 9: 1-5; Matt. 14: 13-21
“Though you probe my heart and examine me at night, though you test me, you will find nothing; I have
resolved that my mouth will not sin.” Ps. 17: 3
Lord, David was a man after Your own heart. He had such a great love for You. He set his resolve
not to sin with his mouth. Much to my sorrow, it seems that at times if I set my resolve not to sin, I
find myself like Paul, doing what I hate. Thank God for grace! Lord, it is our desire as Christians to
honor You with the words of our mouths. Many times we say things in jest, but they may cut others
to the core, or we say things that are not totally accurate or honest. We have a tendency to refer to
these as “white lies.” Lord, help us to examine our hearts and allow You to cleanse them. For like
David, we want to be able to say, “though you probe my heart --- you will find nothing; I have
resolved that my mouth will not sin.” “For out of the abundance of the heart does the mouth speak.”
Matt. 12: 34.

Victor Taryor, our Global
Health Missionary in
Liberia, has oversight
responsibility of conducting
the day to day running of
Ganta United Methodist
Hospital in Ganta, Liberia.
Currently, Liberia has only
6 dentists and 5 of them live
and practice in the capital of
Monrovia, about 130 miles
away. At Ganta Hospital,
the last missionary dentist
from America departed as a
result of the civil conflict in
1990. Since then, only a
nursing assistant remained
until 2003.
Given the challenging postconflict situation in Liberia,
they knew that venturing
for a full-time dentist in
Ganta was not an achievable
objective. Because of this,
the Dental Nurse
Practitioner (DNP) training
program was created. This
is a collaborative effort by
the Ganta United Methodist
Hospital and its many
partners, including UMCOR
Health of GBGN. The
partnership has grown
faster than expected and the
rigorous program is having
great success. DNP is now
an emerging medical
training initiative for middle
level dental technicians and
has the vision to train
health care workers for
every health center/hospital
in Liberia, focusing on rural
areas.
The greatest challenge they
face today is procuring
dental supplies and
consumables to provide
uninterrupted training for
students. Work in Liberia is
continuing. Our support of
our missionaries there helps
make great achievements
like these possible.

Thoughts on our week
hosting Interfaith Hospitality
I was privileged to be involved with Interfaith in June.
It was a challenging week. It was an exciting week. I
was impressed…
• with the involvement of the children and youth of
our congregation as they made our young guests feel
at home by playing Twister and board games with
them; as they read to them and searched for colored
pencils so that homework assignments could be
finished properly.
• with the parents of our children and youth, who
involved them, allowing them to grow and to reach
out in ministry.
• with members of the congregation who dug into
their closets and donated pillows and sheets when
the call went out.
• with Linda Raplee, who spent hours calling to make
sure we had dinner hosts and overnight hosts lined
up for the week.
• with Kim Feldmeyer, who set up the YAC rooms
with air mattresses, sheets, pillows, blankets and
towels for the 15 guests we had this week – and
then put them all away.
• with the cooks at Haymount who prepared pound
cake and meatloaf and lasagna.
• with the non-cooks who brought pizza and ice cream
and roasted chicken.
• with Jo Ann Stanford, who organized all the cooks
and the non-cooks.
• with Janet Jones, who coordinated the week,
welcomed our guests each day, did laundry, ran
errands, and is already planning ways to make our
guests feel even more comfortable and special when
we host again in August.
• with the families who were our guests. I cannot
imagine how difficult it must be to try to hold a
family together in those circumstances – living in a
different church each week, needing to have your
children up and out by 6:45 each morning, carrying
only your needed clothes from place to place, helping
your children understand what is happening in their
lives while you struggle to get your feet on the
ground. One of our families left mid-week to move
into their permanent housing, so no more moving
around for them!
• with all the people from church who took time from
busy lives to sit down and share a meal, to listen to
a story, to do a jigsaw puzzle with a child, to spend a
night on an air mattress, and to extend hospitality
to families in need.
Thank you all,
Karen Barkman

ALPHA Course
Is there more to life than this? What happens when we die? What causes
disasters?
If you, or anyone you know, has ever pondered any of these questions, then the
ALPHA course is for you and for them! This life-transforming course will be
offered at Haymount beginning September 13, and will be held for 10 weeks on
Tuesday evenings, from 5:30-8:30pm
Meals will be served and childcare will be available.
Do you want in?
We need many folks to help out as small group leaders, assistant small group leaders and silent
partners, as well as set-up, serving, clean-up, etc.
Our target participation for the course is 100 people from the Fayetteville and Ft. Bragg
communities!
• Our first orientation/training date for those who want to volunteer is Tuesday, June 28 at
6pm in the New Life Center. A light dinner will be served.
• The second orientation/training date is Tuesday, July 19 - same time, same place, same
format.
• The third orientation/training date is Tuesday August 16.
Please consider being part of this new ministry at HUMC, and plan on coming to the meeting in
June. This ministry thrives on word-of-mouth, so invite other Haymounters to come to be part of
the team. If you have questions, contact Dorothy at [email protected] or

ECHO is off for the Summer!
Check the parent email and ECHO Facebook page
for announcements about special ECHO-on-the-Go outings during July.
July 11-15: ECHO Youth Summer Camp at Daytona Beach
with Chris Tomlin and Louie Giglio
We have 10 students attending this amazing camp!
Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
Deuteronomy 6:5
We’re all devoted to something. Just look at where you spend your time, what you talk most about or
who consumes your thoughts, and you’ll begin to get a pretty good idea of where your devotion lies.
For far too many of us, it doesn’t seem to be with God. So, what does it take to be a fully committed
disciple? How do we develop into dedicated and faithful followers of Jesus? Who can we turn to in
order to get some help along the way? Our students will delve deeper into this and discover how they
can be DEVOTED!
A Christmas to Remember:
Thank you from Cumberland Interfaith Hospitality Network
We at CIHN would like to extend our deepest thanks to you for selecting the Ashton Woods
Transitional Housing Program for your 2010 A Christmas to Remember. Already, we are seeing
the results of the Energy Saving improvements made to the homes. We were experiencing
specific challenges regarding families being able to enter into the Ashton Woods program in a
reasonable timeframe. Having 3 utility companies to which we had to pay deposits was
resulting in families having to remain in our emergency shelter nearly 90 days. To date, we
have renovated 4 homes and have plans to renovate a 5th very soon. Families moving into the
newly renovated homes, now only have to stay in our emergency shelter about 30 days! Also,
because of the updated systems, each family living in the renovated units is saving
approximately $75 per month on their utility costs. These savings will enable each family to be
better prepared for their permanent housing transition. Their earned income will be available to
pay past debt, develop a savings plan to avoid future bouts of homelessness, and create housing
stability for their families through establishing a prudent savings reserve for their households.
Because we have been able to track financial savings for the families, the maintenance and
repair savings to our organization, and the energy saving equipment installations, we are now
eligible to apply for help renovating other units through HUD. This would not have been
possible without your generous contribution! We will be making that application in the fall, and
hopefully we will be able to upgrade an additional 8 units. Again, from all of us, thank you so
much for such a wonderful opportunity. A Christmas to Remember 2010 will continue to create
opportunities year after year for homeless children and their families in our community.
