YEAR IN REVIEW | 2011– 2012 | 1
FroM THe DIreCTor
Dear friends,
Another year has been added to the history of the Morehead-Cain, this one marked
by a renovated home, more gatherings of alumni and scholars, and the passing of dear
friends and leaders of the nation’s oldest merit scholarship program.
In October, we opened the doors on our newly renovated offices. Now encompassing
the second floor banquet hall along with the original first floor, the new space was
designed with the scholars in mind.
We discovered that if you build it, they will come. They will come to study, to socialize, to
relax, and to work alongside one another. They will come to share coffee with alumni, to
hear speeches by ambassadors and cabinet secretaries, to have dinner with historians
and health care experts. They’ll even come to read late into the night before final exams.
John Motley Morehead III—who was so fond of telling students to “put in a bid for extra
work” and “drink a gallon of strong coffee to get through it”—would be proud. The
Foundation’s hallways and meeting rooms are filled with scholars shouldering the extra
work of leading this campus, and we can scarcely brew enough coffee (or stock enough
soft drinks) to fuel them.
Alan Dickson, chairman emeritus of the Foundation’s trustees, would be equally proud.
Alan oversaw the Foundation’s governance for four prosperous decades, and our loss
of him on May 3 to cancer was acute. He was a tireless champion of this program and,
for me, a dear friend and peerless mentor.
In the pages ahead we celebrate the influence of our scholars and thank those who
make it possible. Having now welcomed our sixtieth class of scholars to campus,
our genuine privilege to work amid such joyful energy is again renewed. Thank you
to everyone who stopped in during your travels to Chapel Hill. We hope to see many
more of you in the year ahead.
With all best wishes,
Charles E. Lovelace, Jr. ’77
Executive Director

In seventh grade I had to write an essay about a famous

GRAHAM BOONE ’09
Speaking with Morehead-Cain Scholars over coffee. April 6, 2012.
College isn’t necessarily about training for a career.
You learn ninety percent of what you’re actually
going to do on the job.
Carolina taught me how to be a mature adult,
and it gave me a deeper sense of character.
That’s what college is supposed to be about.

CHENEY GARDNER ’15
Biweekly Report from Peru. June 5, 2012.
These last two weeks have been some of the most rewarding and
most fun of my life. I love it here more than I could ever have
imagined or hoped, and every day has been a beautiful surprise.
Of course, I have no illusions about how much of an impact
I will have. I understand my work here will never be enough;
it may amount to nothing in the grand scheme of things.
But for now I am happy to be doing anything I can.

“That’s That,” remarks to the graduating class of 1959.
Cultivate executive ability.
By that I mean the quality of going out after something and
coming back with it under your arm, of getting things done, finished,
washed up, wiped off the slate, drawing two black lines under it,
marking it ‘Finis,’ and putting it in the permanent file.

Final report. August 28, 2011.
I spent the first morning of my trip defending myself
against a downpour of ice the size of softballs and dodging
lightning that struck the ground surrounding our camp.
I promised myself that if every morning started this way I
was going to need to start planning a mental breakdown
that would give Hamlet a run for his money.

Final report. August 28, 2011.
I camped in bear country, crossed rivers, climbed to high
elevations, made careful descents over steep terrain and
spent weeks without any communication with my family.
For an entire month, I moved at a pace of, at most,
two miles per hour, which is not to imply that it was slow
and relaxing. But it was satisfying.

A TRIBUTE TO YVONNE
3rd February 2012
Yvonne Theobald, longtime administrator of the British
Morehead-Cain Program, passed away on January 23, 2012.
James Dean '89 spoke at her memorial service in London.
His tribute is excerpted here.
I’ve been asked to talk about Yvonne’s work for the
British Morehead Scholarship Programme and I am
delighted to do so.
The Morehead began here in the UK in 1969 with
Yvonne as part of the team, and she worked with us in
various capacities until last year—a total of 42 years.
When the advanced party first came over from North
Carolina, she was literally the first person they met
at the English-Speaking Union, and according to one
esteemed member, she had ‘an amazing combination
of ease, humor and grace’ from the word go.
For most of those years, she was our Chief Administrator, responsible for the day-to-day running of the
programme, helping scholars with all the issues that
came up, and she was a brilliant one. Her loyalty was a
given, her kindness and warmth constant, she had an
incredible memory for everyone who passed through,
and her attention to detail and her industry simply
made everything run so smoothly. And always with
an unmistakable twinkle in her eye.
When I applied for the scholarship, she was also the
first person I met in the waiting room for the interview.
I was aged seventeen and three quarters, deeply
nervous, had never been to a proper interview before,
had never even been to the States, but I desperately
wanted this scholarship. And I didn’t know how to
make the best impression. But the aforementioned
‘ease, humor, and grace’ soon cast its spell. A few
minutes in the waiting room, talking to her about
the scholarship and the beauty of North Carolina put
me at ease, and brought the best out in me when it
mattered. I didn’t really understand the importance
of it at the time, but she gave me the courage I needed
to be myself for the interview. And it changed my life.
I’ve been on the other side of the interviewing table for
the last 15 or so years, and I always made sure Yvonne
was there in the waiting room because I wanted to see
the best in all the students we saw. And her unique gifts
made that possible right to the end. Our scholarship
excites people for many reasons on paper, but I like to
think she was the secret ingredient that made people
truly believe in it.
Megan Mazzocchi, Lucy Chatham, Yvonne Theobald,
and James Dean '89 at Yvonne's retirement party in the
Long Room at Lord's Cricket Ground in London
I know I speak on behalf of the whole Morehead-Cain
programme, when I say how grateful we are that we
found Yvonne all those years ago. She really is the
history of our programme, and we are going to miss
her terribly. But if we are what we leave behind in
others, as I know Yvonne believed, I hope that all those
lucky enough to have passed through our waiting room
with her will carry her indomitable spirit forward
into their lives.

BRITISH COMMITTEES
CANADIAN COMMITTEES
All British secondary schools are eligible to participate in the selection process for the Morehead-Cain.
Administration of the British Programme and selection process is coordinated by the Morehead-Cain
Foundation. The London-based British MoreheadCain Scholarship Committee—established by British
Morehead Alumni—oversees the selection process in
Great Britain. The scholarship committee designates
a selection committee, which interviews nominees
in London and selects three to four students to
interview as finalists in Chapel Hill. The selection
committee works closely with a number of educational charities and associations, including the
Fulbright Commission, and also with Winston
House—UNC’s home in London.
Any graduating student in Canada’s 5,600 accredited
high schools and cégeps may either be nominated
for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship by his or her
institution or apply for the scholarship as an
individual. Application forms are distributed on behalf
of the Canadian Morehead-Cain Program by the
Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation (CMSF).
Candidates may come to the Canadian MoreheadCain Program either directly or through the CMSF
area committee system. Finalists are chosen in
December by a reading and interviewing committee
in Wellington, Ontario; interviews of ten finalists
are conducted by the Canadian Central Selection
Committee in Toronto in mid-February.

KATHRYN REKLIS ’01
Interview about her role as a theologian. May 25, 2012.
As an English major, all my interests in literature were about the big
questions of human existence. What makes us human? What does it
mean to be human? How do we understand human experience?
All of these questions were being asked in theology,
and in an even more explicit way.
It really was like a lightbulb going off. I can’t believe there are people
in the world who get paid to read and think about these questions.

Alan Dickson was elected a trustee of the Morehead Foundation in November 1964 and served as chairman
of the board from July 1985 until his retirement in June 2006. When he passed away on May 3, 2012, the
Foundation lost a tireless advocate and wise guardian. The State of North Carolina honored Alan with an
