NATURAL HEALING SOURCES
Natural healing resources
The unique healing sources are the reason why people come to Piešťany already for
centuries.
The healing effects of the local thermal mineral water and sulphuric mud
were first described by physicians in the 14th century.
NATURAL HEALING SOURCES
Thermal mineral water
 Thermal mineral water – these are natural springs of thermal mineral water with a high content of
minerals (1500 mg per liter).
 The water also contains hydrogen sulfide and other free gases
 It springs from tectonics faults at a depth about 2000 meters
 The water temperature of the springs is 67 to 69°C
 Output is around 3 millions liters daily
NATURAL HEALING SOURCES
Chemical composition of the thermal mineral water
(1000 ml), importance of hydrogen sulphide
 H2S – fast absorbtion through skin sebaceous
and sweat glands
 H reacts with oxygen, produce water and
biologically active sulphur ion
 Inhibition of degradation of elastin, collagen
 Increase of quality connective tissues through
binding on chondroitisulphate and hyaluronic
acid
 decrease of sensitivity on pain and skin
inflammation, skin erythema
 resorption of skin infiltrates (e.g. in scarf)
 antimicrobial effect (binding of oxygen in
microorganism)

NATURAL HEALING SOURCES
Sulphuric thermal mud
 Is the high quality peloid
 Consist from sediments of the river Váh
combined with erupting thermal water
springs
 After extraction, the mud matures for at
least one year in specially designed pools of
mineral water
 Excellent physical and biological
characteristics
 The peloid has a buttery consistency and a
steel-grey or black colour with the ability
for high thermal absorption
NATURAL HEALING SOURCES
Composition of the sulphuric thermal mud
 the live component – special anaerobic
non-pathogenic thermofilic microbial flora,
lives in temperature 45-60°C (Desulfovibrio
desulfuricens, Thiobacterium, Thiospirillum
Pistyen...)
 The organic component – particles of
plants, bacteria
 Anorganic component – bentonit and river
sediment
NATURAL HEALING SOURCES
Impact of the sulphuric thermal mud
 mud pack reduces local swelling around joints
 reduction of muscle tension
 better nutrition of cartilage, connective tissues
and intervertebral disc
 enhance anti inflammatory activity
 preventing degradation of elastin, collagen,
hyaluronic acid
 Excellent thermal properties - cools down 4
times slower than water
