Shared Leadership for the 21st Century...
Sr. Mary Patricia & Mr. Peter Reibold
chart the future of CSA-HHS
In 1982, Sister Mary Patricia Barrett
initiated a new future in the health care field for
the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine (CSA).
It was the year that CSA Health and Human
Services (CSA-HHS) was established. CSAHHS has grown and changed over the years but
its vision remains constant, namely, 'To
develop, promote, and manage the health and
other human services operations of the Sisters
of Charity of St. Augustine and to ensure the
integration of the CSA philosophy in the sponsored institutions and organizations" (Vision
Statement).
Today, as a new decade begins, Sister
Mary Patricia's tireless dedication to CSA-HHS
continues in the role of Chairperson of the Board
of Trustees and the Director of Mission and
Sponsorship Services. In 1989, she transferred
the President's reins to Mr. Peter Reibold and,
together, in a model of "shared leadership" they
direct the corporate members into the future.
Contagious enthusiasm is the characteristic
that best captures the spirit of Mr. Reibold.
While health care is burdened with
serious problems, Peter looks at
the situation and sees great opportunity. "The new decade is a
critically important time for health
care innovation. CSA-HHS must
position itself after reviewing the
health care environment to
respond to the 90's with renewed
vigor. Services not now provided
in health care might well become
the opportunities for CSA in a
rapidly changing competitive
environment."
The challenge of this leadership
team is to broaden the scope of
CSA-HHS beyond the facilities
currently sponsored by the
congregation. Formation of the
CSA Health Network which
combined St. Vincent Charity
Hospital and St. John West Shore
is an example cited by Mr. Reibold for integrating operations, sharing services and providing
cost-effective quality care to enable development and delivery of a broader range of
services. Sister Mary Patricia states that the
1995 vision for CSA-HHS includes a "strengthened and expanded Catholic health and human
service system developed and interconnected at
regional and national levels."
By carefully managing resources and using
the collective wisdom of the corporate staff,
management teams of the hospitals, Boards of
Trustees and the rich traditions of CSA, both
Sister Mary Patricia and Mr. Reibold envision
the delivery of health care by the Sisters of
Charity of St. Augustine into the 21st century
as a tremendous challenge and an exciting
opportunity.

To Boldly Go...
Portrait: Sister Kathleen Barnes
A warm smile, a generous heart, and zeal
for the mission of bringing God's love to those
she serves describe Sister Kathleen Barnes
who, for the past seven years, has been sharing
her gifts with the people in Columbia, South
Carolina, as a staff nurse at Providence
Hospital.
Sister Kathleen's interest in nursing sprang
from her experience as a patient in a hospital
during her high school years. She observed the
dedication of one of the nurses caring for her
and it led her to think of following that
the street from Providence Hospital. In addition,
she teaches reading twice a week through
Project Learn. Although her time for hobbies is
limited, she does enjoy gardening and walking.
Sister has found great satisfaction in her
work because of the opportunity provided to
both help patients regain their strength and to
grow in their awareness of God's love for them.
She believes strongly in the mission of people of
faith to reveal God's love to others.
In reviewing her experience with the people
in the South, Sister observes: "I find them
ardent in their belief and reliance
on God for their strength. I
seldom see racial or religious
prejudice in the patients who
come to Providence Hospital
and because of the hospital's
outstanding cardiovascular
services, people come from all
areas of South Carolina."
The Sisters of Charity of St.
Augustine are proud of the dedication and witness of Sister
Kathleen in her ministry to the
people of Columbia. In her
sensitivity to the needs of others,
she tries diligently to live out the
community's motto: "In All
Things Charity."
Sr. Kathleen assists patient at the Free Medical Clinic
profession. Eventually, she thought of totally
dedicating her life to God through her work as a
nurse and this led her to the Sisters of Charity
of St. Augustine where she has been a member
of the Community for 37 years.
Growing up in a family of seven children,
she learned early in life to share with others.
Today she continues to share by participating in
several outreach ministries while working the
night shift as assistant director and nurse on a
medical unit at Providence Hospital. Working at
night has enabled Sister to volunteer her services during the day in several areas.
Sister Kathleen has joined Palmetta AIDS
Life Support (PALSS), a buddy program that
assists persons living with the difficult and disabling disease. Each volunteer is responsible
to contact a designated AIDS victim and give
weekly moral support. Sister also volunteers as

A Season of Celebration
-
Four Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine
(CSA) recently celebrated milestones on
their life's journey at vow ceremonies and an
anniversary celebration.
On August 28,1990, the Feast of St.
Augustine, Sister Regina Herman pronounced
her first vows as a member of CSA. Father
Anthony Muzic was the principal celebrant at
an impressive evening Eucharist. Sister Regina
selected for her theme "Choose Life, Choose
Love." Presently, Sister lives and ministers at
Timken Mercy Medical Center in Canton, Ohio.
At a special prayer service also on August
28th, the community rejoiced with Sister Denise
Stiles as it witnessed her renewal of vows for
one year. Her ceremony reflected the theme
"As the Father has loved me, so I have loved
you. Live on in my love." (John 15:9) Sister
Denise resides at St. Luke's Convent and is in
ministry at St. Vincent Charity Hospital and
Health Center.
A day of jubilee was celebrated by Sister
Marie Estelle Kosick and Sister Elaine
Nimberger on September 23,1990. It was an
occasion of great joy and thanksgiving as both
sisters, enthusiastic in their commitment, celebrated their call to religious life and God's faithful love. Sister Marie Estelle celebrated 70

Home Away from Home
Marcelline Hall is "a home away
from home" to those special people
who need hospitality when a family
member is seriously ill at St. Vincent
Charity Hospital and Health Center.
Sister Maura Hannam initiated
this outreach program in 1965 when
she observed a need for overnight
accommodations for family members
of patients. She arranged for the
renting of two suites in Lupica
Towers across the street from the
hospital. Later six rooms in the
School of Nursing became available
and, finally, an entire floor consisting
of twenty rooms, a suite, a lounge,
a kitchenette and laundry facilities
opened. This area has been named
Marcelline Hall in honor of Sister
Marcelline Monnot, a member of the
community from 1887 to 1949 and
superintendent of nurses at St.
Vincent Charity Hospital for 27 years.
Visitors are informed of the availability of Marcelline Hall through the
admitting office, doctors and sisters.
During 1989, 2,500 guests used
these accommodations and approximately 3,700 in 1990. Relatives of
patients have come from the Cleveland area and neighboring cities and
states as well as from abroad. Those

Reflections
Sr. Joan Gallagher
As Sisters of Charity of St.
Augustine (CSA's), we believe that
the healing ministry of Jesus is
focused on people, particularly those
who are spiritually, socially, psychologically, physically or materially
neglected in any way. St. Iranaeus,
an early Church father, taught that
"the glory of God is human beings
fully alive." In 1939 CSA recognized
that the addicted person is among
those who are not "fully alive" and
admitted the first patient with the
diagnosis of alcoholism to St.
Thomas Hospital in Akron, Ohio.
This was a pioneer approach to the
problem and it told the medical and
civic community that chemical addiction was a disease which needed
treatment.
Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in
1935, became a model for hundreds
of support groups all over the world.
CSA was involved in the founding of
this organization in the person of
Sister Ignatia Gavin. The 12 Step
Program demonstrated to the world
that growth toward human wholeness
and maturity and spiritual journeys
are intertwined. In the CSA
Sponsorship Statement, we write,
"In any illness or disorder, one's
whole being is affected ... [thus] the
treatment plan respects the person's
emotional well-being and religious
beliefs."
Earlier in our history, The Sisters of
Charity of St. Augustine were at the
forefront of mental health care when,
in 1929, a psychiatric department
was opened at Mercy Hospital in
Canton, Ohio . . . a hospital sponsored by CSA. This was the third
such unit to be established in the
country. CSA has continued to develop mental health services which
today include a full continuum of both
outpatient and inpatient programs.
Traditional adult psychiatric care remains a core program along with specialized units dedicated to adolescent
psychiatry and chemical dependency
programs.
What does the future hold as we
deepen our understanding of the concept that the journey to wholeness
and holiness are basically one? As

women religious, we believe that the
Gospel of Jesus becomes more relevant as society becomes more violent
and dysfunctional. In the future, outpatient services of our hospitals may
include weekend retreats for caregivers, days of prayer for medical
personnel and spiritual direction
as part of employee assistance programs. We see the growing need
for strong religious beliefs and an integrated value system in the ministry
of healing.
We, The Sisters of Charity of St.
Augustine, have committed ourselves
to personal growth in maturity and
holiness and thus are striving to become the persons God created us to
be as we reach out in service to the
needs of others.

who died since July 1,1990...
