The red regions (clusters) denoted the brain activation during the anticipation period. The result indicated that the bilateral striatum, insular cortex, superior temporal gyrus and left anterior cingulate cortex were significantly activated (Random Effect: Puncorrected = 0.0001, K = 30). During the anticipation period (regions mark in red), the insular cortex and basal forebrain rather than the medial prefrontal cortex dominated the generation of subjective feeling and guided the decisionmaking. On the other hand, during the experience period (regions mark in green), the inferior parietal lobule, superior frontal gyrus and middle frontal gyrus were involved in the consequence assessment of monetary decision (Random Effect: Puncorrected = 0.0001, K = 30). It is well known that gambling is exciting and causes measurable symptoms of physiological arousal such as increased heart rate, according to psychologist Dr Matthew Rockloff of Central Queensland University in Bundaberg. In the gaming environment, players often interpret such excitement as a "lucky feeling" and there is some suggestion this makes them more likely to take higher risks. Dr Rockloff says casinos already use methods that cause excitement, including ringing bells, flashing lights and an open gaming floor. "They don't know why it works but they've noticed that if they have small gaming venues, they don't make as much money as larger gaming venues," he said. Dr Rockloff says he is interested in testing whether excitement causes people to lose themselves and take greater risks, and if so under what circumstances. In previous experiments, he blasted white noise at people who were gambling. This caused people to gamble more intensively, playing faster and placing larger bets. "If you do that in a casino environment, you're going to lose more money more quickly." Next, he wanted to find a more surreptitious way of getting people excited so he could see whether the same thing happened. http://www.npgaw.org/problemgamblinginform ation/factsfigures.asp Prevalence of Pathological & Problem Gambling Does prevalence go up as gaming opportunities increase?
