New Car Buyers’ Guide
Motorshow 2012 New Car Guide
Motorshow’s new and used car guides for buyers are
compiled by specialists who have years of experience and
extensive research facilities. Uniquely and very importantly
they are in touch with the new and used car market,
searching out where car buyers are being disappointed
and where others are really getting satisfaction.
Taking account of the various car segments, where preferential requirements vary, we rate all cars that are available on the Irish car market.
We acknowledge, simply due to competitive market
forces, that there are no really poor new cars being
offered anymore. However, there are vast differences
in residual values, build quality, specification levels,
prices, performance and economy levels etc. These and
many other factors greatly influence the ratings of one
seemingly similar car over others.
No other guide tells you, which cars are the best and
the worst buys in plain English. We tell it as it really is,
and you can be assured that the advice that you get in
Motorshow 2012, our annual car buyers’ guide is
independent and consumer driven. Motorshow 2012
is written by Eddie Cunningham, Padraic Deane and
John Loughran with additional research by Catherine
Conboy.
Special Readers Notice
Because prices, etc., can change, we suggest that
once you have made a short-list of cars that you
are interested in, you should confirm prices and
specifications with dealers when shopping for your
new car.
In our guide “prices start at” refers to the lowest
price of the passenger version in that model range.
Whilst every care has been taken in compiling this
guide from information received from the distributors
at the time of writing, (January 2012) no responsibility
can be accepted by the publishers or staff of
Automotive Publications Ltd. for any errors or
omissions.
The Jargon
Most motorists don’t understand the jargon used by carmakers
or in car advertising, surveys over a number of years have concluded.
Just five per cent of 4,000 motorists surveyed understood the
abbreviation TNT, which stands for taxed and tested.
Only 10 per cent understood the abbreviation MFSW – multifunction steering wheel, while fewer than one in three (30 per
cent) understood the abbreviation EBD, which stands for
Electronic Brake Distribution.
The most recognisable of the eight abbreviations used, was
ABS (anti-lock braking system), which was correctly identified
by 76 per cent of the respondents.
Survey points to major consumer annoyance with “dealerspeak” and brands it the most frustrating part of buying a used
car.
Far from making the used-car buying process simpler, terms
like FSH, ESR and ICE confuse the average consumer. 95 per
cent of men and 98 percent of women don’t know what the
most common terms mean.
The research also reveals that 27 per cent of those polled
believe second-hand car dealers deliberately use car jargon to
confuse potential customers into a sale; and 39 per cent of
people are put off buying a used car due to dealer-speak.
