Resizing Designs
Changing Density
At times, you may wish to change the density, or distance
between the stitches. For instance, if you will be embroidering on a
very lightweight fabric, or with a heavy thread, you may wish to place
fewer stitches in the design. If you will be embroidering with a light
thread or on a hard-to-cover fabric, you may want the stitches to be
placed closer together. Both options are available to you in Smart Sizer
Platinum using the Density icon on the tool bar or by selecting Density
Settings from Options located on the Menu Bar.
Menus
Quick Start
Tutorials
Smart Sizer Platinum will recalculate the stitch count to be
appropriate for the new size, retaining the original density value. The
density value is simply a measurement of the distance between the
stitches. When resizing, we usually want the distance between the
stitches to remain the same; it is the stitch count that should change.
FAQs
When designs are resized, it is necessary to recalculate the stitch
count to be appropriate for the new size. If you make a design smaller,
and the stitch count remains the same, the stitches will be placed
closer together, which may result in thread breaks and even needle
breakage. The resulting design will appear bulky and feel hard to the
touch. On the other hand, if a design is enlarged and the stitch count
remains the same, the same number of stitches will be placed in a
larger area, resulting in poor fabric coverage.

Smart Stitch
When changing the size of designs, the stitch type of some
sections may be unsuitable for the new size. When working with
condensed files having the extension gnc, a Smart Sizer feature
called Smart Stitch will automatically change the stitch type to be
more compatible to the new size.
You can turn off the Smart Stitch feature by selecting the
Options drop down menu, and selecting Preferences. Remove the
check mark beside the box labeled “Enable Smart Stitch.”
Most machine manufacturers recommend that you do not
exceed 10mm in stitch length. If you disable Smart Stitch, and you
have selected “Realistic View” on the View menu, the program
will alert you to stitches longer than 10mm by eliminating them
from the display.
Why would you disable Smart Stitch? It is not recommended,
but if you had some design elements that were borderline in stitch
length and you wanted to keep the satin stitches, this would be
possible. When Smart Stitch does change satin stitches to fill, it
does so for the entire group of stitches, not just the ones that
exceed the maximum stitch length. This will give a more pleasing
appearance than a mixture of stitch types.
Understanding Stitch Types
Satin stitches, which have one needle penetration on each
side, can become too long when designs are enlarged. When satin
stitches exceed 10mm, or a length that you select in Preferences,
the Smart Stitch feature will automatically convert them into fill
Running Stitch
stitches. Rather than a single needle penetration on each side of a
column, fill stitches have multiple penetrations across a column or
shape.
23
Menus
When designs are reduced in size, it is possible for satin stitches
to become too short, which can result in thread breaks or thread
clusters beneath your fabric. In this instance the satin stitches are
automatically converted into running stitches by Smart Stitch.

Editing Designs
Smart Sizer Platinum allows you to gain more control over
your designs by allowing you to control individual stitches. If you
have an outline that is consistently off, you can move the stitches
into line with the fill object.
Navigation is made simple through the use of a Histogram bar
near the top of the screen. The Histogram shows color blocks in the
stitching sequence. Directly below the Histogram is a slider bar
that allows you to navigate through the design. There is an Action
Mode Box, that lists two different modes of operation for your

FAQs
Your Smart Sizer Platinum supports a generous selection of
home and commercial formats. Condensed formats are designed for
optimum performance in resizing. When resizing any of the
condensed or expanded formats listed, the stitch count will be
recalculated to be correct for the new size. With expanded formats
however, multiple resizing within the same session is not
recommended.

center of the hoop.
In the example shown on the following page, there are three

individual needs.
Hoop Size lets you view your
designs in a hoop that fits your
machine. If your hoop size is
not listed, you can type in your
own custom dimensions. You
can also use this Custom Hoop
option to check that your
creation fits within a certain
fabric dimension.
Density Settings allows the
user to make the stitches
more dense or less dense
according to the fabric or
thread weight to be used.
To adjust according to thread
weight, click on the thread
weight to be used. To adjust
according to fabric type, click
on Custom Density. The base of the setting is 100 percent. A larger
number will produce more stitches, and a smaller number will
produce fewer stitches. For more detail on density, see the
Introduction chapter. More options are available by clicking on the
Advanced button when using expanded format designs.
NOTE: When using condensed format designs with the extension
gnc, the advanced button is not available.
Fill Stitch Length - a larger number lengthens each stitch in the
fill stitch areas, possibly resulting in a fill stitch with a softer
appearance, and with a lower stitch count. A lower number shortens
the length of each fill stitch, possibly resulting in a fill stitch with a
tighter appearance. This may be desirable when placing lettering
or other elements on top of a fill.
Run Stitch Length - A larger number lengthens running stitches,
and a smaller number shortens running stitches. You may wish to
reduce this value if you have running stitch underlay popping out
from underneath satin or
fill stitch areas.
Maximum
Stitch
Length - the default of
10mm is recommended.
This setting helps to keep
the machine movements
smooth and edges of the
embroidery crisp.
Menus
Fill Stitch Density - a larger number places the rows of stitches in
fill stitch areas closer together for better coverage, resulting in a
higher stitch count. A lower number places the rows of fill stitches
farther apart for lighter coverage, resulting in a lower stitch count.
Quick Start
Column Stitch Density - a larger number places satin stitches, also
called column stitches, closer together for better coverage, resulting in
a higher stitch count. A smaller number increases the distance between
the stitches, for lighter coverage, resulting in a lower stitch count.
Tutorials
The Advanced button on the Density Settings screen gives many
options when using expanded format designs. You may use these
settings with any supported format other than gnc. To use the
advanced setting with gnc format designs, simply make them the
proper size, and then save in any other supported format.

stitching integrity of your embroidery creations.
Smart Stitch is a function of the software that is

they will be automatically converted to a fill stitch. If
satin stitch columns become too narrow because of
size reduction, the column will be converted to a

A check mark beside the box “Clean-up ‘Junk’
Stitches” will enhance your lettering integrity.
Cleanup “Junk” Stitches is a function which
cleans up any stitch that is smaller than the selected
value. The default is 0.5mm. This means that any
stitch within a 1/2 mm will be removed from any
lettering within a 90 degree window. The 90 degree
window ensures that lock down stitches do not get
eliminated. Such small stitches could cause thread
breaks and will not be missed in the appearance of
your lettering.
A check mark beside the box “Do not use Size
Express for Scaling ‘Expanded’ designs” will deactivate
the capability for stitches to be recalculated for the new
size. When making a size recduction, stitch count will not
be decreased for the smaller size, resulting in a heavier
density, When making a size enlargement, stitch count
will not be increased for the larger size, resulting in a
ligher density.

In this lesson, we will move stitches to a new location. The most
fundamental element in being successful in moving stitches is to
remember: Left click to select, right click to move. We have chosen
a simple letter “O” composed of running stitches with a satin stitch
outline. We will move some of the straight stitches in the “O” to make
zig-zag stitches, and then we will move some of the zig-zag stitches
to make straight lines. After you finish this exercise you will have the
concept of moving stitches. From there on, it’s just a matter of
practice.

When I try to delete a color, the entire design is deleted. Why?
Before beginning to select colors for deletion, check that you
have cleared away the selection box from around the design. Then,
choose the Select Color tool, in conjunction with the Next Color
tool to select colors. If the box appears larger than the single color
segment displayed, then the selection box was not cleared. Click on
the View All Colors tool, clear the selection box and begin again.

It is recommended that you do not resize formats other than
GNC several times in one session. Think of it like making a copy
of copy - the quality will be reduced with too many changes in the
same session. Rather, resize once or twice, and if you still want to
make additional size changes, save the file and reopen it.
