Stepping Stones Museum for Children –
A Community Treasure
Since the expansion of our facility that
culminated in a November 20, 2010 grand
re-opening of our museum, we have more
than doubled our footprint here in Mathews
Park and have been able to significantly
expand the breadth and depth of programs
and exhibits we offer. The number and
diversity of partnerships we’ve developed
has increased and impacted children and
families throughout the region. We’re on
target to serve 300,000 visitors onsite and
6,500 membership households by the end of
this year. We wouldn’t have been able to do all
of this and so much more without your most
generous support! Thank you for all that you do
on behalf of Stepping Stones in helping make
our expansion and renovations possible to
facilitate children’s explorations.
What’s next for Stepping Stones?
Stepping Stones is actively planning new
learning adventures – new exhibits and
programs, new partnerships and major
new initiatives on and offsite. Our research
shows that the Stepping Stones community
wants the museum to expand its educational
offerings around the broad-ranging topics
of health; energy and the environment; early
childhood education; science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM) initiatives; the
arts; positive youth development; and much
more. Most important, our community wants
to ensure that the museum’s offerings are
accessible to everyone. It’s a tall order, but we
believe we’re up to the task.
Over the next three years, the award-winning
Healthy Children, Healthy Communities® initiative
will expand to include new, content-rich additions
to the popular Healthyville® exhibit at the
museum and at offsite locations such as
schools, libraries and hospitals. A full-scale
traveling version of Healthyville will tour to six
prominent children’s museums throughout
North America beginning in 2014.
We’ve also taken the first steps to explore
a dynamic asset-based early learning and
literacy initiative that builds on the capabilities
of young children; engages and supports
parents, caregivers and educators; and fully
aligns with other community assets.
The early learning and literacy initiative
will provide:
igh quality preschool experiences that

ensure school readiness;
• L anguage-rich environments that foster
early literacy development; and
•Learning-how-to-learn strategies and
applications that strengthen relationships
between young children and adults in
their shared quest for learning.
Both of these exciting new learning adventures
will be made available through the museum’s
accessibility program, Open Arms.
