They will meet on Thursday, February 4th, at 6:30 PM. Our new Membership Committee: Paulette Garibaldi and Dorothy Gambee! In Memory Of: Dianne Kienholz July 25, 1948 to January 9, 2010 passed away unexpectedly on January 9th. Dianne and her husband, Jack, have been members of our club for several years. Dianne was a sweet lady with a very fun sense of humor. She was a member of the gold prospector’s club as well, and often spoke of their prospecting adventures. Dianne is survived by her husband and children. There will be a Memorial Service and Potluck for Dianne on Saturday, February 6th at 1:00 PM. This will be held at the Crosby Chapel, 16404 NW Church Rd., Seabeck, WA 98380. In lieu of flowers, the More Comfortable Cab Cutting Is the edge of your cab machine water trough sharp? When you’re cutting a cab, does the edge dig into your wrist or arm? Here’s an easy and inexpensive solution to end your discomfort. Get a piece of foam pipe insulation from the hardware store and place a piece of it over the edge of the trough. Voila, no more discomfort! Rock Talk Report: Several Kitsap Mineral and Gem members, Jack Eads, Jan King, Ruth Brooks Butler and (observing) Tom Lucas helped to present to the 7th grade science classes a bird’s eye view of the “Three Classifications of Rocks” on December 9th and 10th, 2009. Six classes of forty minutes went by quickly and the information they received was appreciated. The questions from the 7th graders were challenging. Just a reminder, we can use tumbled rocks to give out at our Rock Talks. - Ruth Brooks Butler Jan King “Rock Talking” Port Townsend Club Workshop News: Our sister club in Port Townsend provides some wonderful opportunities for their members. (Many KMGS members are also members of the Port Townsend club and vice versa.) Workshop plans are as follows: The work room will open weekly on Tuesday nights starting February 2, 2010. They also have monthly Saturday workshops, starting February 6, 2010. There was a decision made at their January meeting that participants must be at least thirteen years old to attend the workshops and that on-site training is required for EVERYONE using the machines at the workshops. Marie Anderson will demonstrate how to make doublet and triplet cabochons on February 2nd and 6th. Also note that these are "open workshops" not "classes". The meeting was called to order by President, Tony Schackmann. Following the Pledge of Allegiance led by the Juniors, Tony introduced the Officers and committees, welcoming new Vice President, Woody Woodside. PA System: Jim Radke did some research and found a wireless microphone system which Tony is using for the first time tonight. Display Table: Woody introduced the evening’s contributors. Sam Holcomb, Pat Fagan, John Morris, Bob Lavery, John Hubbard and Dean Norman all had fascinating stories about their treasures. Mike Heesacker showed off the picture the club received from the Odyssey School on Bainbridge Island. They were the winners of the Mineral Display at the Fall Festival of Gems. Mike’s Scout troop assembles a display each year and the school with the most attendance on Saturday of the show wins the case for their library or science classrooms. Congratulations Odyssey School! The Juniors were excused to work on this evening’s project. PAGE 6 Members are encouraged to set up a table and sell items they are interested in unloading. The April Club meeting is our annual Auction with half the proceeds going to the Scholarship fund and the other half to the Club. Tony will go over the rules of engagement at our next meeting. Welcome to the Kitsap Mineral and Gem Society! “THE H AR D R O CK N EW S ” FEBR UAR Y, 20 10 February Birthstone : Amethyst Birthstone Color: Purple If gazing into the sparkling purple depths of an Amethyst suffuses you with a sense of powerful well being, this is only to be expected. The ancient Greeks believed that this gemstone held many powers, among them protection against intoxication. In fact, the word Amethyst comes from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning sober. In ancient Greece, the gemstone was associated with the god of wine, and it was practice to serve this beverage from Amethyst goblets in the belief that this would prevent overindulgence. Even today, Amethyst is considered a stabilizing force for those struggling to overcome addictive behaviors.
