“Mission Possible”
Throughout the term, we
have discussed questions
such as:
Where does plastic come
from?
How is plastic used?
How does it impact the
environment?
What problems does it
cause?
What are solutions?
Etc…
Les étudiants du 3e cycle de
Français Langue Seconde ont
été très occupés durant
l’étape 1 à Mecatina School.
Ils ont travaillé sur un thème
nommé Mission Possible. Le
projet final était de construire
un éco-objet composé d’un
minimum de 6 objets recyclables tels que:
Des bouteilles de plastique
Des boîtes de conserve
Des couvercles
Du carton
Des pailles
Des bouchons
Etc..
At the end of the unit,
students realized that it is
possible to take action in our
community and that if everyone did their share, it would
be a “Mission Possible” to
reduce pollution and help
the environment.

Terry Fox Run Update
Thanks again to everyone who
came out and helped make
this years’ Terry Fox Run an
amazing success.
I would
also like to give a special
thanks to the volunteers and
local businesses that made a
special donation to make this
event even greater. In total,
$3,227.70 was raised which
shows just how much of a
difference such a small community can make.

Flea Market Day
The CDLS hosted a Flea
Market Day at the Gros
Mecatina Community Centre on Nov.30, 2013, and we
are pleased to say that it
certainly was a success.
There were 19 tables with a
huge variety of items available ranging from baked
goods, crafts and second
hand items. The craft items

Learning Beyond the Classroom
As part of both the Personal
Orientation Project and the
Exploration of Vocational
Training classes students
asked if they were interested in planning and
organizing an event of their
choice for the local youth
centre. Wow! The response
from the students was overwhelming. They enthusiastically began planning and
carrying out their events with
enthusiasm and
amazing organizational skills.
The events the
students planned
included: A Roaring 20’s dance, A
80’s dance, a

game night, a
movie night, a

The students did an amazing
job in preparing and carrying out the activities. They
were able to practice many of
the skills that is related to
both the POP and EXPLO
program such as; communication,
responsibility,
punctuality, working as a
team, as well as many others.
The students used so many
life skills preparing for these
events.
The MJGM Board of Directors
is extremely proud of the
initiative and skills shown by
these students. It is so nice to
see the youth become
involved in their community.

Honouring Our Heroes
This year Remembrance
Day was observed on
November 8, 2013 at Mecatina School.
The staff,
students and community
members gathered in the
gym to pay homage to those
who fought for our freedom
and the lives that each of us
now enjoy. The ceremony
lasted about 1 1\2 hours and
began with the presentation
of the Canadian Junior Rangers as well as the singing of
O Canada by Tara Bobbitt.
The song and video A
Pittance of Time by Terry
Kelly was then played.
Some will remember Terry
Kelly from a few years ago
when he visited La Tabatiere
and did a show in the gym
for the students and commun i t y
m e m b e r s .
Presentation of the Junior Rangers
The students were involved in every aspect of the
ceremony. The young children in cycle 1 presented a
recital of the poem In Flanders Fields and shared the
story A Poppy is to Remember. The students in cycle 2
and 3 read a poem Why
Wear a Poppy, in honor of
Remembrance Day and then

Honouring Our Heroes
It was a stellar performance
and everyone at the ceremony thoroughly enjoyed
this. The ceremony closed
with music by The Trewes,
Highway of Heroes and a few
words from our principal,
Mr. MacNeil. It was wonderful to see so many people
come out for this special day
to remember all those who

Your success is a great
source of inspiration for our
current students. There are
so many career options
available that it sometimes
becomes confusing for them.
It is nice that they can learn
from you, former Mecatina
students, about your experiences in the programs you
have chosen. Your personal
input means so much more
Program Highlights:
The Primary Care Paramedicine program is very fast
paced. Certain courses in
the program are done weeks
faster than if done through
other college programs,
however, it is also a very
hands on course. Students
spend much of their time in
a Lab where they work with
dummy patients and equipment that you find in the real
world. There is also a Vehicle extrication course where
students get the chance to
tear vehicles apart with
more than just a description
provided in a booklet or
website.
We are very proud that your
journey began at Mecatina
School and that our students
are succeeding in so many
different areas! Congratulations on your accomplishments.

throughout Quebec. Its mission is to support the overall development of children aged five
and younger to ensure that every child has an equal opportunity for a good start in life. AE
believes that Québec families and local communities are capable of implementing actions
that support the overall development of their children. Avenir d'enfants is committed to providing support to local communities with openness, commitment and solidarity to undertake
a collective effort on behalf of our children so they may get a good start in life and attain optimum levels of school readiness.
Avenir d’Enfants supports a Lower North Shore working committee (Coasters Association,
Centre de santé et de services sociaux de la Basse-Côte-Nord, Commission Scolaire du Littoral Community Learning Centres, CPE Mer et Mousse and the Centre locale de développement de la Basse-Côte-Nord) in the development and implementation of a Lower North Shore

Looking forward to seeing you at
the annual Christmas Talent Show!
& CLC
On Saturday, December 14, 2013 our arena welcomed skaters for the first time for the 2013-14
season. It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves at the rink. A huge thank you goes out
to all those individuals who gave of their time, both day and night, in order to get the skating surface
ready. Without their dedication to this worthy initiative this project may not have been realized.
At this time, we would also like to take this opportunity to wish each and every
individual both in our community and afar, a wonderful Christmas season and the
very best in the new year to come. May it be a prosperous and healthy one.
Best Wishes,
CDLS
