Experts say to be
stylish but practical

One more thing to add to the to-do
list for your holiday party: Find an outfit that creates a celebratory mood, is
welcoming and warm (but not hot), can
hide a little sauce splatter and has pockets to stash remotes, phones and, for
the ladies, lip gloss. It’s the delicate balance of being chic and comfortable.
“I can’t imagine any more pressure
when you’re putting on a party — when
you are so focused on wine and food —
and you have to look beautiful as well,”
says Simon Kneen, creative director of
Banana Republic. “Men have it a little
easier, but you still have to make it look
effortless and easy to manage.”
Dressing for the role of host is a little
bit different from a guest, with many
more practical considerations. Just
like every other aspect of the party,
seasoned, stylish party-throwers say you’ll likely want to do
as much preplanning as you
can.
Even last month, Kneen
knew what he’d be wearing
next time he entertained: a
poplin shirt, sleeves rolled,
with a tie. Meanwhile, Manhattan-based
designer
Shoshanna Gruss will pull
one of her many cocktail
dresses with subtle slash
pockets out of her closet
and pair it with a chunky
necklace or sparkly cuff
bracelet.
“I have some fun statement pieces that I don’t
get to wear often,” she
says. “You’re setting the
rules so you know you’ll
be appropriate.”
It would be a letdown,
she adds, for guests
who’ve put thought into
their outfits to find the
hosts in something they’d
wear any other night.

There are plenty of reasons why FOX’s “New Girl” is
officially one of TV’s top comedies.
One is Zooey Deschanel, of course, who plays Jess,
an adorable dork of a schoolteacher who moves in with
three single guys after she catches her boyfriend cheating. There’s her quirky wardrobe, too, which has caught
the attention of fashion mags, not to mention the show’s
hilarious, super-sharp dialogue.
Then there’s Deschanel’s trio of charismatic male
co-stars, which includes Dobbs Ferry’s Max Greenfield. After a decade of recurring parts on shows like
“Veronica Mars,” “Ugly Betty” and “Greek,” the 31year-old has finally landed a star-making role as Jess’s
skirt-chasing, self-absorbed roommate, Schmidt.
Easily one of the season’s breakout characters,
Schmidt is the best part of “New Girl” for many fans,
with tributes to his well-built body popping up on YouTube. Already, it’s become a running gag for Greenfield
to take off his shirt — and more.
“It’s ridiculous,” he says. “Every episode, I’m more
naked and more naked and more naked.”
In just a few short months, Greenfield’s Schmidt has
revealed that he enjoys street slang, frighteningly
short kimonos, baby oil and working out with gravity

For so many American kids, it’s their first — and
sometimes only — exposure to ballet: A holiday performance of “The Nutcracker,” that classic tale of a little
girl’s dreamlike encounters with battling mice and toy
soldiers, a dashing prince, a growing Christmas tree
and a land of sweets.
There’s one in virtually every town. But until now, if
you lived in Anchorage or Omaha or Tulsa, you weren’t
able to see what many consider the Nutcracker gold
standard: the late George Balanchine’s classic production for New York City Ballet.
Today though, the company will beam a live “Nutcracker” performance in high-definition from Lincoln
Center to some 560 movie theaters in all 50 states, followed the next night by a live broadcast on public tele-

In taking its “Nutcracker” national, the company
hopes to promote its brand, earn new revenue and join a
growing trend of HD transmissions of live performance, pioneered by the Metropolitan Opera.
“There’s nothing like the real thing,” says an admittedly “totally biased” Peter Martins, the company’s ballet master in chief. “Of course, the hope is that if this
works — however you define success — it will become a
new way to show the world what we do so well.”
Martins — a former principal dancer with New York
City Ballet under his legendary predecessor, Balanchine — grew up in Denmark and thus wasn’t exposed to
“The Nutcracker” until he came to New York as a young

sets the tone,” Gruss says. “And, it
will feel weird to have the heels on
when you’re checking on everything at the last minute, but it won’t
once the guests get there. Your
guests will appreciate it.”
Minnie Mortimer says she likes
to emerge from her bedroom all
dressed up, especially now that she
lives in more casual Los Angeles after growing up in New York and
Palm Beach, Fla. She sees the holiday gatherings in her own home as
an opportunity to wear the maxi
dresses she loves but finds difficult
to navigate when getting in and out
of the car or walking for several
blocks. Maybe something in a jewel
tone — which takes a little splatter
better than something light.
This year, Mortimer will jazz up
her look with a glittery hair pin. “I
really like the holidays to be about a
little bit of sparkle. It’s hard to do
the rest of the time or it looks too
much, but during the holidays, it
looks appropriate,” she says.
Men don’t have to go quite that
far, says Tyler Thoreson, head of
Gilt Groupe’s menswear editorial
and creative divisions, but they
shouldn’t be in jeans, either.
“You will be tempted to wear
jeans. Don’t. Think cords instead,”
he says. He likes deep-red, finewale pair. It’s an injection of “holiday without going overboard.”
Anyway, since you’ll inevitably
use your trousers in lieu of a napkin
or kitchen towel as you prepare the
meal, cords will serve you better,
according to Thoreson: Corduroy
pants hold up after multiple washes.
The dark denim you’d otherwise
wear doesn’t do as well with many
washes.

Men’s accessories: Think comfortable shoes, says Thoreson,
because you’ll be on your feet. Oh, he adds, and you’re likely
to spill something at some point. He recommends lug-soled
wingtips.
Banana Republic’s Kneen says any shoes at all are better than
slippers.
Invitation dress code: Mortimer says she likes a little guidance from the host, even if it’s just a vague suggestion such as
“holiday-party dress.”
But, Gruss says, remember, it’s family time. Wear the more
conservative cuts and save the sexy Herve Leger-style bandage
dress for another occasion.
Beauty: Makeup should be maintenance-free, says Ricky
Wilson, Dior Beauty’s celebrity makeup artist. “I take the same
approach I do with a client attending a red carpet event. You
have to keep in mind that you have many people looking at
you with little or no time to look at yourself.” His picks include false eyelashes or at least waterproof mascara, and
liquid eyeliner.
For the lips, he suggests a neutral waterproof lip pencil underneath a lipstick AND a gloss. You want staying power, he
says.
Photos: At some point, someone is going to snap a photo of
the host, so Wilson says you may as well take one before any
guests arrive, just so you know what it will look like. Snap it
just before the party starts. “Make sure you have your outfit
on and hair close to done if not finished,” Wilson says. “This
will give you an idea of how you will look in the photographs.”
No outfits: An “outfit” already has too many parts for a
multitasking host, says Kneen. Women should stick to a simple-shape dress in a flattering color. Even black works when
the house is decorated, as long as there’s some point of interest created by an interesting or conversational accessory,
he says.
“As the hostess, you’re naturally the center of attention, but
you compliment your guests on their outfits and let them
shine.”
Kneen adds, “You want people to feel at ease. You want
them to relax and stay longer.”

like “Schmidt happens,”
he’s always eager to play
on his name — and so far,
he only goes by one, like
Sting or Madonna. He
also seems to be the sole
contributor to a jar kept
in the apartment where
the male residents have
to deposit cash for saying
something offensive.
But somehow, despite
all of Schmidt’s ridiculous antics, Greenfield
and the sitcom’s writers
have created a guy that
you just can’t help but
love. “I think he’s deep
down, a really sweet
guy,” he explains. “I think
he’s totally affected by
society and pop culture to
a degree that’s spun him
so out of control that he
doesn’t know what to do
with himself.”
Unlike his alter ego,
Greenfield isn’t a player
off-screen. He’s been
with his wife, Tess, for
nearly a decade – they’ve
been married for three —
and he’s the proud dad of
their daughter Lilly,
who’s almost 2. So forget
about asking him for any
Schmidt-like dating advice: “The last person
you’d ever want to ask is
me, I’m so far out of the
game,” he says. “I would
have such a meltdown if I
had to go on a date right
now.”
Yet Greenfield certainly knows what to do
when the script calls for
one of those shirtless
scenes. He’s a fan of
CrossFit training and the
Paleo or “caveman” diet,
although he says that he
can only go about a week
before he wants to “eat
everything.”
For tonight’s installment at 9 p.m., which has
Schmidt playing a sexy
Santa at his office holiday party, Greenfield admits that he hit the gym
more than usual. After
all, his wardrobe consists
of little more than boxers
and a fur-topped hat. But
that’s nothing compared
to what’s coming up — or
off — of Schmidt soon.

for a few weeks after tonight, but when it returns
with all-new episodes
next month, Greenfield
hints that he’ll be wearing even less. “I don’t ask
too many questions,” he
laughs. “I’m just so happy to have a job, I’ll do
whatever they tell me to
do.”
Greenfield is definitely giddy about his new
big-time gig, one that he’s
been working toward for
years. He attended the
University of Wisconsin
after graduating from
Dobbs Ferry High School
but didn’t stay there long;
by the time he was 20, he
was taking acting classes
in Los Angeles, where his
parents had moved.
He admits that he
didn’t take his craft too
seriously at first, but
slowly grew to love it.
“I didn’t have any other skills,” he jokes. “I
woke up one day and said,
‘I am not qualified to do
anything else, so this has
to work!’”
For now, Greenfield
can breathe easy. The
show’s September premiere pulled 10 million
viewers,
more
than
“Glee” and the most for a
FOX series debut since
2001’s “The Bernie Mac
Show,” earning it an almost instant full-season
pickup. Ratings have
since dipped, but “New
Girl” is still one of the
most popular programs
for young viewers and
considered a bona fide
smash. “I don’t know that
it 100 percent feels real
yet,” says Greenfield. “It
feels almost like a situation that’s too good to be
true, you know? I still
need full confirmation
from somebody.”
Well, what can we say?

“We’ve been talking
about doing this for a
long time,” said Katherine Brown, executive director of City Ballet. She
said tickets appear to be
selling well, but that it’s
hard to tell in advance because many people just
show up and buy tickets
on the spot.
Tickets cost more
than an average trip to
the movies — ranging
from about $15 to $20, depending on the theater.
Although such HD
transmissions in theaters
are growing in popularity, they’ve raised the
question of whether they
could siphon off dancegoers who might other-

wise seek out a live performance in their own
communities. Could the
New York City Ballet be
considered, in other
words, an unwelcome interloper?
Not at all, said a ballet
presenter in Omaha,
Neb., where the City Ballet version will hit the
