IMPLEMENTATION GUIDE
PR OGRAM P UR PO SE
WTS International, the world’s leading spa, fitness and lifestyle consulting and
management firm, has teamed up with the Green Spa Network, in an effort to provide
spa, fitness and lifestyle facilities a guide on how to better conserve water, re-purpose
space, and secure alternatives for supplies, treatments/programs, and operating
procedures.
THE GOALS
• Decrease water usage by selecting products and developing protocols that minimize
the amount of water necessary for production, packaging, and delivery*
• Decrease the amount of water used during treatments and recommending ways to
re-purpose rooms that were originally developed for hydrotherapy treatments
• Reduce or Eliminate the plastics used within a facility by adopting more
environmentally friendly options
HOW WILL WE DETERMINE SUCCESS?
An integral part of this program will be for all facilities to participate in the provided
program tracking. In order to showcase success through the various recommendations
provided here, we need to see what differences were made at your facility. Throughout
this kit, within each category, there will be a system for tracking. It is critical that all
participants log and submit their results in order to clearly communicate the impact we
make our progress will be showcased during the Green Spa Network Congress event
in September 2016. We want to show the world the positive change we all can make
together.
*PLEASE NOTE: All vendor recommendations noted with an Astrix (*) are WTS Preferred Vendors offering
WTS-managed facilities preferred pricing.

PLASTIC SU PPLIES
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Reduce the use of plastic bottles, cups and/or bowls for the spa, fitness
or lifestyle facility
• Provide reusable or recyclable paper cups, glass or stainless steel water
bottles for purchase or complimentary with membership or series
purchase
• Incorporate water filling/filtration systems throughout the facility to
support customer driven efforts to help eliminate plastic waste
VENDORS
• Plastic Water Bottle Alternative | FlowLikeWater.com
“Our package is as positive as our water. It’s made from renewable materials that are nonPET and BPA free. Cartons are transportation efficient. Fewer trucks = less fuel = less green
house gas emissions, reducing our carbon footprint and yours.”
• Water Filling/Filtration System | elkay.com/ezh2o
“Keeping plastic bottles out of landfills is just plain smart. The new ezH2O is brilliant. It
not only helps to save bottles, it tracks how many across your whole facility. That’s good for
the earth and great for facility managers, with installation and maintenance made
stunningly simple.
• Stainless Steel & Glass Water Bottles | *MJ Corp

HOW WILL WE DETERMINE SUCCESS?
Track your bottled water and/or plastic purchasing! Determine your 2015 total spend on bottled
water or plastic cups. Compare that total to what is spent as you phase out your water bottles and
implement filling stations or boxed water at your property. Remember that this can include any
plastics that are replaced! *Tracking tool provided at the end of this document.
BONUS CHALLENGE: Encourage your members, guests and/or residents to join the challenge by
participating at home! Teach them how to reduce their use of plastics and track the % change in their
spending habits OR challenge them to bring their water bottle to the facility earning them points. Incorporate prizes to make it more fun!

LAUNDRY | LINENS
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Incorporate fewer towels into service protocols
• Use lighter weight textiles that will require less water and energy to
wash and dry
• Replace cotton textiles with microfiber
VENDORS
• *Comphy Linens | comphy.com/green
Eco-friendly reasons to choose Comphy: Comphy linens are high performance microfiber
linens. Comphy linens use less energy than any alternative. They’re lighter than cotton, and
dry faster. Comphy linens are 100% recyclable. Comphy linens last 2-3 times longer than a
cotton sheet. Replacing your sheets less frequently significantly adds to sustainability.
Comphy linens are wrinkle free. You’ll use less energy from pressing equipment.
• *Monarch Cypress Robes | monarchcypress.online
Monarch’s Eco Micro Cotton towels offer significant water and energy savings over other
towel solutions. Monarch’s towel mill takes extraordinary steps to lighten its carbon
footprint including recycling 99.5% of its water usage. Monarch’s Eco Robes are made of
super absorbent microfiber material that lasts at least three (3) times as long as cotton has
extremely low drying times.
HOW WILL WE DETERMINE SUCCESS?
Track the percentage of your textiles that are microfiber. Audit your laundry volume against guest
visits and treatments performed once per quarter for three (3) days. *Tracking log provided at the end
of this document.
BONUS CHALLENGE: Provide your guests, members and /or residents with water reduction
guidelines they can follow at home when doing their own laundry. You may also provide them with
suggested ways to recycle old linen.

RECOMMENDATIONS
• Provide water efficient shower heads
• Use lavatory faucets that optimize water flow without sacrificing
performance
• Provide “hands free” faucets to conserve water
• Install water conserving toilets and urinals that provide a dual flush
option for solid or liquid waste
• Eliminate hydrotherapy elements: Vichy Shower, tubs, cold plunges, or
ice fountains, and retrofit the space to offer other revenue driving
services (transform to a signature treatment room that includes a
sauna or re-purpose as a standard or couple’s treatment room)
• Implement a consistent preventative maintenance (PM) program to
reduce loss from leaks and drips
VENDORS
• Water Efficient Showers | Kohler Exhale™ B120 2.0 gpm
Kohler products can help a building earn Water Efficiency points in the LEED® Green
Building Rating System with the shower head model referrenced and some of their faucets.
• Sauna Vendor | Clearlight Infared Sauna
Infared saunas provide a more energy efficient option as compared to traditional saunas by
using 1/3 less energy (which also saves water). Additionally, there is no need for any harsh
chemicals to be used when cleaning.
HOW WILL WE DETERMINE SUCCESS?
Retrofit your space! If you replace some fixtures or completely re-purpose a treatment or program
area to be better utilized, tell us how.
WTS International is pleased to provide some examples of WTS-managed properties who successfully
completed a retrofit to increase revenues and reduce water usage.

utilization of the treatment room by 30%.
Spa details:
• 11,000 square-foot spa that encompasses two floors
• Features the first authentic hammam in New York City
• State-of-the-art fitness center
• Three luxurious Spa Suites offering private, connecting, couples-size
treatment rooms
THE LORIEN SPA | ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA

TREATMENTS | PROTOCOLS
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Incorporate waterless protocols for treatments (i.e. waterless pedicures
and scrubs that are dissolved using hot towels)
• Make backbar body scrubs and masks in-house by purchasing
ingredients in bulk to reduce production, packaging and shipment from
vendors
• Balance treatments that require water (ex. hydrotherapy) with drier
treatments
• Use cream masks versus clay masks to reduce the amount of water
and/or towels used for removal
VENDORS
• *Phytomer: Phytomer offers waterless body treatments using their showerless scrub as
well as their Firming Gel Body Wrap.
• *FarmHouse Fresh: Body treatments can be performed in a dry room, eliminating the
need for showers Additionally, all manicure and pedicure treatment products can be
removed with steaming towels eliminating the need for soak bowls or additional water
sources.
• *HydroPeptide: The Active Body Scrub can be used as a “dry rub” scrub, eliminating the
need for water.
• *ZENTS: The Waterless Wrap uses organic shea butter, massaged into the body after the
wrap. No rinsing required. Their Scrub is removable with hot towels so very little water
is used. Additionally, ZENTS offers the opportunity to switch to pouches when ordering
bulk/dispensary packaging that will not only save on plastics, but also storage.
• *Malie Organics: Malie reduces plastic waste by offering a gallon refill amenity program.
This program offers products in bulk with empty 16oz bottles to be refilled for use in
spa/hotel/fitness/residential common areas which reduces waste of travel size bottles.
• *Universal Companies | Spa Pantry: Universal Companies has developed a Spa Pantry
where spa’s may purchase product in bulk and make their own scrubs, etc. The Spa
Pantry even contains a cookbook that may be purchased with recipes for various
treatments.

HOW WILL WE DETERMINE SUCCESS?
Tell us how you changed your protocol to reduce water usage. This may include the number of towels
and/or plastics that were reduced or eliminated as well.
BONUS CHALLENGE: Connect with your vendors. Communicate your goals and actions to see what
additional support they can provide.
WATERLESS TREATMENT EXAMPLES
THE SPA AT WINTERGREEN | WINTERGREEN, VIRGINIA
WTS was engaged to provide operational consulting services. As a part of our
recommendations, we suggested they remove their pedicure thrones, and instead
recommended they develop protocols for waterless pedicure treatments. Not only does this
save space in the spa, but also conserves water.
TAOS SKI VALLEY (BLAKE HOTEL) | TAOS SKI VALLEY, NEW MEXICO
During the design phase, WTS has recommended offering waterless pedicures in an effort to
conserve water and save space.
AURA SPA & SALON at the HILTON | RICHMOND, VIRGINIA
In an effort to save time and increase utilization while also conserving water, Aura Spa
implemented a waterless pedicure protocol.

charity: water is a non-profit organization which is on a mission to provide clean, safe
drinking water to people in developing countries. With the help of hundreds of
thousands of supporters, charity: water has funded more than 17,673 water projects in
24 countries, bringing clean water to 5.6 million people so far.
There are 663 million people on the planet who don’t have access to life’s most basic
need – that’s one in eleven people. When people don’t have access to clean water, they
drink disease-filled water instead. They don’t have a choice. And how do they get it?
They walk for it. Mostly, the job falls to women and children, who might walk up to four
hours a day to collect dirty water. That’s time they can’t spend caring for their families,
earning income, or learning in school.
When a community gets clean water, lots can change. It can improve health, decrease
medical expenses, increase equality, give girls more time in school, and give women the
chance to grow food or earn income.

PROGRAM PURPOSE
WELLness Begins with Water: A WTS International initiative
It costs charity: water approximately US $10k to install a
community well and WTS is aiming to raise this amount in
partnership with its managed facilities, as well as corporately
and through partnerships with selected preferred vendors.
Gary Henkin, president and CEO of WTS said: “We take our
plentiful supplies of clean water for granted and our spa
industry is founded on it, yet many people in the developing
world do not even have access to clean drinking water.
“We believe this is a basic human right and here at WTS
we’re committed to working with charity: water and also our
partners and clients, to raise funds to improve the lives of
people who are without safe water, by empowering them to
take charge of their own water supply.”

One easy and effective way to encourage your staff, members and guests to donate is
through a Donate Your Birthday Campaign.
This is a campaign concept that was developed by charity: water for individuals to
encourage their friends and family to Donate their Birthday rather than spending money
on gifts. In an effort to relate this to the spa, fitness and lifestyle communities, WTS has
developed two (2) versions of this campaign in an effort to provide a special offer to
those guests or members who opt to Donate a Birthday for charity: water.
OPTION ONE: Encourage guests to donate on their birthday, offering them a Special
Offer in return for supporting the cause
OPTION TWO: Encourage guests to donate in honor of the facility’s birthday or
anniversary, especially if celebrating an inaugural year, 5, 10, 15, etc. year anniversary,
and provide a Special Offer in return for supporting the cause.
STRATEGY
The purpose of this program is to encourage your guests and/or members to give back
to the world’s community, and in doing so, offering them a little something special for
their generosity to others.
Utilize the outlets available to you to promote the Donate Your Birthday Campaign to
current members, guests, and local businesses.
• Post on your Website
• Post to Social Media Outlets
• Include tagline / offer in all eblasts and standard email signatures
• Send personalized emails to those guests/members celebrating their birthday (if the
information is available to you)
• Partner with local businesses to help spread the word of your campaign by offering
a database swap (include their message in an outreach to your clientele if they will
send your offer to their current database).
SPECIAL OFFER PARAMETERS
WTS International, based on years on proven success, has developed the following
offers for guests and/or members.
INDIVIDUAL SERVICE CREDIT: Donate your Birthday and we will match your donation,
up to $25! Receive the donation match in store credit toward your purchase of any spa
service over 50m, fitness program series or package purchase, or retail purchase over
$100.

Much like the Donate Your Birthday Campaign, spa, fitness, and lifestyle communities
may opt to promote donations through a New Member or New Resident Offer. Working
in much the same way, it is meant to encourage guests to donate and receive a Special
Offer in return. The strategy and special offers will be similar to the Donate your
Birthday Campaign.
For Spa or Fitness facilities, it is recommended that this campaign be specifically
geared toward new Club Members. Be sure to incorporate the proper verbiage in any
campaign so as to ensure you target the appropriate market.
For New Residents in a community, it is recommended to partner with a local
restaurant or retail shop who is willing to provide the credit to attract new residents in
your community. Many times, the sales team will have partnerships like this already in
place.
Recommended Verbiage: As a new member / resident, we’d like to introduce you to our

where a portion of the proceeds from the evening’s purchases or bookings can be

Encourage your staff to participate as well! As we all know, the more excitement you
can build around something, the more likely it is to become successful. Knowing that,
be sure to include your staff and educate them in the campaign and initiative as a whole.
Make it fun and set a goal for your team to raise. Reward them with a lunch if you
achieve that goal Keep in mind that friends and family of staff may be invited to
participate as well. The goal is to spread the word and make a difference.
Below you will find an email template you may use to reach out to your staff and
encourage them to make a donation.
Friends, Family, or Staff,
I’m really proud to be a part of organizing WTS’ 2016 Charity initiative, WELLness begins with water.
Clean water is essential to life and WELLness, and charity: water has made it their mission to bring
clean water to families in need throughout the world. This is why WTS has selected this as our charity
initiative for 2016.
Diseases from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of
violence, including war.
100% of the money will be used to build clean water projects, and when they’re complete, charity: water
will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the exact community we helped.
In conjunction, our goal is to reduce the carbon footprint left behind, by eliminating or reducing the use
of plastic water bottles among our managed properties and corporate offices.
Please donate to our campaign -- anything you can give is a huge help. Our goal is to raise $10,000 over
the course of the year.
