Next lay the hose as flat as possible and measure length. Hoses can be cut up to 11/2" on each end for exact sizing. If the old hose is not available, measure the outside diameter of your radiator, thermostat and water pump outlets. Then, using some old heater hose or similar material, mock-up the hose shape using smooth curves as needed. Allow hose to overlap outlets by 11/2" to 2" on each end and trim. With mock-up flat, measure the length and order the closest size hose from the chart at right. The hose sleeving becomes shorter as it is expanded. For this reason, it is necessary to purchase a length of sleeving which is longer than the hose. To determine the length of sleeving required to cover a hose, multiply the length of the hose by 1.5. For example: A hose that is 2’ long will require approximately 3’ of sleeving to cover it completely. Installing Magnabraid and Magnabraid II To ease in the installation of Magnabraid or Magnabraid II sleeving on heater and radiator hoses, first wrap the hose with masking tape leaving 1” unwrapped on each end (it may be necessary to clean the hose first). This will allow the braid to slide more easily over the hose. Using cornstarch or baby powder will further assist the installation process. Slide braid over hose and, once hose is completely covered, wrap one end tightly with electrical tape. Run hand over hose several times stretching sleeving toward the other end. Once sleeving is tight on hose, tape the remaining end. Sleeving can now be trimmed on both ends with a good pair of scissors. Cutting SSteel-Flex hoses To avoid fraying, first wrap the place to be cut with electrical or duct tape. To ease the cutting process, place the hose in a vise. Using a fine tooth hacksaw (32 teeth per inch) cut through the tape and hose. Trim any frayed ends with sharp scissors or diagonal cutters. IMPORTANT – clean out hose with compressed air after cutting to remove all debris left by the cutting process. Magna-Clamps When installing Magna-Clamp fittings on braided hoses, first make sure that the worm gear clamp is completely open. Smooth out or trim any frayed ends on the hose. Insert the hose, using your thumb to push any loose strands of braid, into the fitting. Push fitting over hose twisting clockwise as needed. O-Ring Water Necks Should it become necessary to replace the o-ring on a Spectre water neck, replacements are shown on page 78. If a replacement o-ring is not readily available, a stock replacement gasket may be used. Power Valve Saver When installing a Power Valve Saver, DO NOT USE A DRILL PRESS. Using a handheld drill only, enlarge the power valve vacuum hole with the supplied drill bit.
