By Michele Hulsman Our local Hoboken Families know the true meaning of giving during the holidays! Thank you to everyone who generously opened their hearts and donated this season. We received many donations of toys, books and pajamas to our annual drive. We greatly appreciated the support and we are happy to have such good partners in our community. We were able to provide hundreds of presents for many children who would have not have received them otherwise. Thank you to the following businesses for providing drop box locations: Apple Montessori, Baby Gap, Big Fun Toys, Diamond Gymnastics, Hoboken Library, New York Sports Club North , Pilsener Haus & Biergarten and Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts. The kids at Apple Montessori even had a contest for decorating their drop boxes. A special thank you to the Rossini Family for their generous donation to our annual toy/pajama drive. We also received a $500 donation from an anonymous donor. Kids Tennis • Group Classes • Birthdays Private & Semi-Private Lessons Contact: Coach Leo: (908) 910-4894 - [email protected] Many thanks to Jeff Jacobs and The Hudson School Families for their abundant gifts donated to our toy drive. Thank you to Jet.com for running a corporate pajama and book drive. Special thanks to Kathleen at Big Fun Toys for initiating our Fourth Annual HFA Toy Drive Kickoff Party and continuing the drive though Dec 23! We are very grateful to have this partnership with Big Fun Toys, who also provides a special discount to HFA members throughout the year (details on page 4). The Hoboken Family Alliance also donated $1500 each to both the Toy drive and Pajama drive. The toys and pajamas gathered have been donated to local families, including In Jesus’ Name Charities, York Street Project and NJ Child Protection and Permanency (former know as DYFS).We would like express our appreciation and thank each and every one in the community who have made our toy and pajama drive a success! Thanks to all of your donations, underprivileged children all over Hudson County had a wonderful holiday season! Thank you again for making our Toy Drive a huge success in 2015. With much appreciation, The Hoboken Family Alliance Directors 2 HFA January 2016 Start Off The New Year Right with Doing Good by Dalia Tole It is a new year, and that got me thinking... How can I teach my children to be more charitable and environmentally conscious?.Here are some ideas that cost nothing out of pocket, and might appeal to your kids as well. Crayon Recycling Did you know that the crayons which your children enjoy can be a serious threat to the enviroment if not properly disposed? Annually, over 500,000 pounds of broken crayons are discarded in landfills throughout the country. The wax from crayons is not biodegradable and will never break down, leaving a waxy sludge in our landfills for centuries to come. There are two major recyclers of crayons, who are aiming to prevent this. HCW-HFANewsletterAd-3.5x2-REV2.i1 1 The Crayon Initiative takes in unwanted crayons, remanufactures them, and provides them to hospitals that are caring for our kids. Hospital arts’ programs provide in-hospital entertainment and learning programs. The National Crayon Recycle program also sells Crazy Crayons which are made from recycled crayons. http://crazycrayons.com/recycle_program.html http://thecrayoninitiative.org/ Old Clothes Donation/Recycling via Schoola A consignment store with a difference, Schoola turns quality pre-worn children’s and women’s clothes into money for your child’s school programs. This guilt free, hassle free giving works like other online consignment programs: they send you a free bag, postage-paid. Leave it with your mail carrier, and if the clothes sell, your school can make money. https://www.schoola.com/ Amazon Smile/Target Take Charge of Education AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you. Smile.amazon.com offers the same prices and selection as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon donates half percentage of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization. You can choose from nearly one million organizations to support, including your school, or if you wish, Hoboken Family Alliance. Target runs a similar program, Take Charge of Education, where customers pick a school of their choice on Target.com. For purchases made via a Target debit or credit card, the company makes a donation to the selected school.
