Dear Friends - Stages St. Louis
STAGES ST. LOUIS
Dear Friends,
Welcome to STAGES 2014 Mainstage Season at the Robert G. Reim
Theatre in Kirkwood! This year has certainly seen a whirlwind of activity at
STAGES. Celebrating our 28 year history of award-winning musical theatre
performances, we recently became the proud recipient of the 2013 “Best
Theatre Company in St. Louis Award” from BroadwayWorld.com. And our 2013
STAGES production of Always… Patsy Cline received two “Best Actress” Awards
for both its stars, Jacqueline Petroccia and Zoe Vonder Haar. This awardwinning production recently reopened in April at the Playhouse at Westport
Plaza to great acclaim and brought back both of these STAGES stars. So now
our loyal patrons can not only enjoy a unique STAGES experience here at the
Reim, but can also visit us at The Skip Viragh Center for Arts at Chaminade for
our Family Theatre performances and our brand new theatre at Westport Plaza.
This year, the 2014 STAGES Mainstage Season celebrates the Realization of
The American Dream as we explore the unique challenges of seeking fame,
monetary success, and preserving a historic knowledge of family traditions.
Our journey starts with funny-man Neil Simon’s They’re Playing Our Song (May
30 – June 29), a tune-filled love story inspired by one of the most prolific and
successful American song-writing teams of the 20th Century, Academy Awardwinning composer Marvin Hamlisch and Grammy Award-winning lyricist, Carol
Bayer Sager. The season continues with the Pulitzer Prize-winning How To
Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (July 18 – August 17), a riotous musical
lampoon detailing the singular pursuit of the American Corporate Dream. And
the grand finale of our Mainstage Season is the Tony Award-winning Fiddler On
The Roof (September 5 – October 5), the beloved musical masterpiece that
explores the immigrant experience and a European family’s seemingly hopeless
quest to achieve a piece of the ultimate American Dream. In addition, our
award-winning Theatre for Young Audiences series at Chaminade will feature
Disney’s Sleeping Beauty (June 18 – June 29), a guaranteed “dream” treat for
the entire family.
As always, STAGES considers it a great joy to explore with you the various
theatrical stories spun from the vast network of our human experience. And
it is through these shared life experiences that we come to better understand
ourselves. Thanks to your amazing support and enthusiasm, STAGES has been
allowed to bring 28 years of musical theatre magic to St. Louis – and for that we
are forever grateful! So please join us and “Experience the Story”!
Gratefully yours,

THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG
Opened 2/11/1979, Imperial Theatre, 1,082 performances
By the early 1970s, many people were suggesting that the “Golden Age” of
the Broadway musical was over. But due to a vigorous battle for supremacy
between rock musicals, “concept” shows, and conventional musicals, it proved
to be one of the most innovative and exciting decades the stage musical had
ever known.
Following the success of the groundbreaking production of HAIR in 1968, several
musicals continued to ride the “rock wave” in the early part of the decade.
Musicals such as THE ME NOBODY KNOWS, GODSPELL, and GREASE were all
met with great enthusiasm. But they weren’t alone, “concept” musicals such
as PIPPIN, CHICAGO, and, the most successful, A CHORUS LINE, found their
way into the hearts of avid theatergoers through the mid-1970s and beyond.
Rounding out the supremacy battle were conventional new book musicals
such as ANNIE and THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS, as well as revivals
of HELLO, DOLLY! and OKLAHOMA!, which continued to keep traditionalists
entertained throughout the entire decade. So by the end of the 70s, it
appeared that the “Golden Age” of Broadway wasn’t necessarily over, maybe
just redefining itself a little.
To top the decade off, a charming and unique variation on the traditional
book musical opened on February 11, 1979 at the Imperial Theatre. Its award
winning author, Neil Simon, had a history which included radio and television
writing with Sid Caesar, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, and Woody Allen. And his
theatrical successes included the Broadway plays BAREFOOT IN THE PARK and
THE ODD COUPLE, as well as Broadway musicals SWEET CHARITY and PROMISES,
PROMISES. Award winning composer, Marvin Hamlisch’s works included, at that
time, adapting the score for THE STING, composing the score for THE WAY WE
WERE, playing piano for legend Groucho Marx in AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO
at Carnegie Hall, and composing the Broadway musical A CHORUS LINE. And
Carol Bayer Sager had co-written the worldwide hit “A Groovy Kind Of Love”,
and had recorded two hit albums as a singer. The three multi-faceted artists
brought their talents together to collaborate on a story based on the real-life
relationship of Hamlisch and Sager, resulting in the contemporary romantic
musical comedy, THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG.
What set this show apart is indeed inherent in these creators. Because of
Simon’s strong background with the masters of comedy, and his crossover from
straight plays, THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG had a unique rhythm plus the feel
of a straight comedic play, which took it out of the realm of a conventional
musical. And Hamlisch and Bayer Sager combined elements from the pop
world with those of the musical theatre world to create a fresh score of
appealing pop tunes which still moved the storyline forward – something which
wasn’t always the case with the rock and “concept” musicals. With just two
central characters, each having a three person “Greek Chorus” acting as their
inner voices, this show somehow gave the impression of an intimate show in a
large package. 1,082 performances later, THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG secured
its place as a small gem in Broadway musical theatre history.
Ultimately, the argument over the death of Broadway’s “Golden Age” will
never end. But as long as life goes on, the art will follow … and possibly a new
“Golden Age” will emerge where shows like THEY’RE PLAYING OUR SONG will
continue to be created and to touch our hearts.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES
HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING
Opened 10/14/1961, 46th Street Theatre, 1,417 performances
A send up of the Horatio Alger rags-to-riches myth, set in the never-neverland
of American big business, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY
TRYING was the title of a satirical self-help book by Shepherd Mead published
in 1952. A copywriter at the ad agency Benton and Bowles, Mead’s book
gave priceless advice on how to reach the top unburdened by “education,
intelligence, and ability.”
Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert wrote a song-less comedy based on the
book, but were unable to get it produced. In fact, the project languished for a
full five years until, finally, producers Feuer and Martin stepped in and saw the
script’s potential. Retooled as a musical, they hired Abe Burrows to adapt the
script and to direct. Burrows had already performed the same writing chore
for the Broadway smash GUYS AND DOLLS in which he kept the characters, but
rewrote the libretto. This new adaptation became even more satirical than the
original source material and added some romance to a created tale about
an ambitious young man, J. Pierrepont Finch, who, with the help of the book
“How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying”, rises from window washer
to Chairman of the Board of the World Wide Wicket Company.
Burrows convinced his GUYS AND DOLLS collaborator, Frank Loesser, to write the
score – a task that was very much against Loesser’s wishes. Loesser, although
a master at satirical writing, was far more interested in allowing his writing to
continue in the romantic vein he had been mining with THE MOST HAPPY FELLA
and GREENWILLOW. Both Robert Morse and Rudy Vallee were cast before the
show was written, as Burrows enjoyed writing for specific personalities. In fact,
the show went into rehearsal without the last scene. Try as he might, Burrows
simply couldn’t find a way to end it. Additional major changes were made
when Bob Fosse was brought in to replace choreographer Hugh Lambert. And
while Lambert kept his choreographer’s credit, Fosse got billed for “musical
staging” redoing most of the dances.

The result was the most acclaimed musical of the decade. Reviews were
unanimous raves and HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING
became the fourth musical ever to win the coveted Pulitzer Prize for drama.
It won 7 Tony Awards, including awards for Best Actor (Morse), Supporting
Actor (Charles Nelson Reilly), Outstanding Musical, Musical Producer, Director
of a Musical, and Conductor. Because the emphasis in HOW TO SUCCEED IN
BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING was on comedy, Loesser’s contribution was
under-appreciated in 1961; but time has been good to the score. It was to
be Loesser’s longest running show, and the last he was to have produced on
Broadway, a fitting triumph and climax to a brilliant career.
The film version of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING
was released in March of 1967 and starred Robert Morse and Rudy Vallee,
recreating their original Broadway roles. Broadway has also seen two recent
revivals: one in 1995 starring Matthew Broderick and a second in 2011 starring
Daniel Radcliffe of “Harry Potter” fame. And while the business world has
certainly changed a great deal since the time of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS
WITHOUT REALLY TRYING’s first appearance, the corporate truths and the
satirical bite of the show are as sharp and sassy as they were in 1961.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
Opened 9/22/1964, Imperial Theatre, 3,242 performances
In many ways FIDDLER ON THE ROOF represented the end of an era and
marked one last glorious flowering before American musical theater embarked
on a bold, brave artistic quest in search of new approaches and musical styles.
The show marked Zero Mostel’s final musical role and Jerome Robbins’ last
effort as a Broadway director-choreographer before devoting himself entirely
to the ballet world.
Based on four of Sholom Aleichem’s Tevye stories, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF’s
theme of the collapse of traditions from generation to generation proved
irresistible to creators Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Joseph Stein. And it is
this very theme, that gave FIDDLER ON THE ROOF its universal appeal. Under
Robbins’ careful supervision, the physical symbol of this tradition became the
community circle. And librettist Joseph Stein’s metaphor of a fiddler on the
roof, was also used to suggest both tradition and its mutability. Of course,
this indelible visual image was itself derived from the magical folk art of Marc
Chagall as evidenced in his painting “The Green Violinist”.
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF went on to become one of the great audience favorites
in Broadway history and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards. It won 9, including
a Tony Award for Best Musical in 1965. A successful 1971 film adaptation
followed, starring the Israeli actor, Topol. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has also
enjoyed an enduring international popularity, and has been translated into 16
languages, performed in 32 countries, and has returned a 927 percent profit to
its initial investors and producers. To date, 43 albums have been cut, including
18 original cast albums in various languages. In fact, as far back as the early
1970s, it was estimated that worldwide theatrical attendance for FIDDLER
ON THE ROOF had reached 35 million people. And after playing its 3,225th
Broadway performance, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF overtook the run of LIFE WITH
FATHER to become the longest running Broadway show of its day.
Today FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has a rich history with 4 revivals on Broadway and
a 5th Broadway revival announced for 2015. This year celebrates the show’s
50th Anniversary on Broadway, proving that the themes of family and tradition
are evergreen and imminently universal. In fact, one of my favorite stories
about FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has to do with the first Japanese production of
the show. One day, during rehearsals, the Japanese producer approached
American book writer Joseph Stein and said: “Tell me, Mr. Stein. Do they really
understand this show in America?” The bewildered book writer replied: “Why
do you ask?” “Because,” said the producer, “It is so … Japanese”.
Certainly, themes such as the importance of tradition to the community, the
conflict between the generations, the struggle between different cultures, and
the power and strength of love in a family are not solely Japanese themes, but
universal. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has touched the hearts of audiences around
the world. In fact, by your participation as an audience you become not only
part of the tradition of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, but part of a wider tradition of
culture that spans faiths and peoples and connects us to each other. Thank
you for being with us.

STAGES ST. LOUIS EDUCATION &
COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS
STAGES Performing Arts Academy is regionally renowned for its innovative
and multi-disciplinary programs that transform lives through immersion in the
Musical Theatre arts. It is also the only such program in the St. Louis region to
be connected to a professional theatre company.
More than 4,500 students participate in programs offered at the academy in
Chesterfield and throughout the metro region. The Academy will not turn a
student away due to financial need, and provides over $70,000 in scholarship
assistance and underwriting annually. Our ability to meet this demand
depends on the generous support of many individuals, corporations, and
foundations. In the summer of 2013 STAGES opened the new home for the
Performing Arts Academy and Administrative Center at 1023 Chesterfield
Parkway East in Chesterfield, enabling STAGES to meet a growing need for
arts education programs in a larger, more flexible, state-of-the-art facility. The
Kent Center for Theatre Arts includes four dance studios, two acting studios,
two vocal studios, a multi-purpose student lounge, a welcome center and
box office, adminstrative offices, as well as a performance hall with flexible
seating to be used for main stage rehearsals, dance classes, educational
presentations, donor and community events and special performances. With
the opening of the Kent Center in 2013, STAGES St. Louis hopes to create a
new home for the community with an increased number of students and
outreach participants, and further cultivate the perfomring arts talent pool
both in the St. Louis region and nationally.
ACT! SING!
DANCE!
This mission of STAGES Performing Arts Academy is to inspire PASSION,
CREATIVITY, and CURIOSITY in students of all ages.
With a faculty of more than 30 professional teaching artists, the Academy
provides the highest quality Musical Theatre arts training. Its sequential
curriculum offers a range of opportunities that inspire curiosity, creativity, and
passion through Musical Theatre education. Whatever the age or experience
level, whether a new or continuing student, aspiring performing artists
throughout the St. Louis region have the opportunity to explore and cultivate
their talent at STAGES, and set the stage for life changing experiences.

Access the Arts
The only program of its kind in the St. Louis area, Access the Arts enables children with physical,
cognitive, and developmental challenges, including Down syndrome, visual impairments and
autism, to participate fully in the performing arts. Its touring division, Troupe Broadway, presents
revues of classic Broadway musical songs at private and public functions, providing its members
with opportunities to share their talents with a broader audience, generating awareness of
their capabilities. Serving 450 students annually, both programs are dedicated to developing
communication and gross motor skills through acting, singing and dancing sessions tailored to
participant needs.
Urban Arts Initiative
In response to many schools scaling down or eliminating arts programming, STAGES has
become a leader in addressing the arts gap, placing professional teaching artists in schools,
community centers, and other youth organizations throughout the greater St. Louis region. Since
2004, STAGES Urban Arts Initiative has conducted more than 175 programs for free or at reduced
cost to over 3,350 underserved students. Thousands of additional students are reached through
public performances at partner sites. This year marks the tenth of collaboration with Marian Middle
School, City Academy, and Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club.
TeamSTAGES
TeamSTAGES is a professionally trained traveling troupe of the region’s most talented and diverse
young performers presenting authentic a cappella musical revues at events and venues around St.
Louis. Their performances entertain and educate both young and adult audiences about various
art forms from musical theatre to jazz, to pop.
Stories@STAGES
The Stories program features interactive readings and performances by STAGES artists and
dramatic play activities for preschool and early elementary aged children. In 2013, more than 20
unique storytelling sessions were offered to 1,000 children and their families at no cost.
STAGES Triple Threats
STAGES gives young students the opportunity to study with some of the best professionals in the
theatre industry. This advanced program is for the serious Musical Theatre student who desires
individualized instruction and guidance in taking their talents to the next level. In addition to
intensive training in the Musical Theatre arts, these select students in grades four to eight
have the opportunity to perform several times throughout the school year.
Scouting Workshops
Scouting workshops at STAGES provide opportunities for Girl and Boy Scouts to earn their
performing arts badges in fun sessions featuring comedy improvisation, puppet making, Musical
Theatre and more. For many Scouts, this is their first exposure to the creative performing arts. Over
800 Scout badges were earned at STAGES in 2013!
Emerson Spotlight on Careers
STAGES apprentice and intern programs offer rich and challenging experiences for qualified
college students, recent college graduates, and young professionals who are actively pursuing
careers in professional theatre. Through the intensive apprentice program, future arts leaders,
theatre artists, and technicians have the opportunity to work closely with STAGES’ staff and artists,
as well as regionally and nationally acclaimed production professionals. Spotlight immerses
participants in the production process and the culture of patronage, providing a 360° view of the
nonprofit theatre. STAGES year-round internship program is made possible through a sustaining gift
from Emerson.
