don’t wait!! Entries are starting to flow in. Our Tri-Senate
Championship
Tournament
has sold out three years in a
row.
If you want to secure your
specific squad times, now is
the time. The word is rapidly spreading throughout the
bowling world about this exceptional tournament being
held one big weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 11-12,
2015 at Cal Bowl, in Lakewood, California.
Last year we had bowlers
all the way from Ohio with a
team from Las Vegas Nevada
winning the grand first place
prize money of $15,000.00.
The $15,000.00 first prize is
guaranteed based on 165 entries and going into our 4th
Annual we are expecting to exceed last year’s entries of 171.
Yes, this tournament is open to
all USBC/TNBA bowlers.
However, if you are a current USBC member but not a
TNBA member; you may still
bowl in this premier event by
simply purchasing the TNBA
annual membership card for
an additional $20. You may
include your annual membership purchase with your entry form. Therefore, virtually
EVERYONE is welcome to
bowl!
This tournament is designed to attract bowlers from
all skill levels, including “rec-
reational bowlers,” “senior
bowlers” (over age 55) as well
as the high average bowlers!
This is a handicap tournament
that is based on 100% of the
difference between the team
entering average and 1050.
The maximum team entering average is 1050 which is
designed to make sure a team
cannot consist of more than
just a few high average bowlers.
Teams whose total entering
average is 900 or less, will be
in the running for bonus prize
money for the highest scoring
teams in that category. Also,
bonus prize money will be
awarded to the highest scoring all senior teams. The bonus team prize pay offs will
be based on the total number
of entries.
Our tournament offers
multiple ways to cash, especially within that squad. Every
squad bowler will have the opportunity to participate in the
optional flat fee round robin
“sweepstakes” doubles event,
allowing bowlers to compete
as doubles partner with all
others selecting that option
for that squad. Brackets and
side pots will also be offered
and paid immediately after the
squad. The round robin will
be paid out with the regular
prize fund.

Gear Up For Third PBA League Season

NORWALK — So what
can the Los Angeles X and Silver Lake (Calif.) Atom Splitters do for an encore in the
Professional Bowlers Assn.
League?
The two local teams will
find it a challenge to duplicate
their rousing performance in
2014 – the PBA League’s second season.
After both teams slogged
through a dismal season in
2013, they wound up in the
league championship match
last year. Then in the Elias
Cup title competition – dubbed
“the battle of Los Angeles” –
the Atom Splitters claimed the
championship with a 4-2 victory behind franchise player
Chris Barnes.
The new season starts at
the end of this month at Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine,
and both L.A. teams will sport
vastly different lineups. PBA
League rules dictated that the
league’s eight teams had to
start fresh after the second season so all the teams re-drafted
their five-player unit on Oct.

Fortunately for the X and
the Atom Splitters, they regained the services of their
No. 1 bowlers from the previous two years. For the X, that
meant Jason Belmonte, the
two-time reigning PBA player
of the year, will once again be
leading the way as the team’s
franchise player.
For the Atom Splitters,
Barnes returns as the team’s
top player.

The top 16 will be advancing to the top 16 Finals. Qualify 1:00-2:30-4:00 & 6:00 with

bowlers to the Single Elim Finals at 8:00 PM.
All Semifinalists will cash.
TOP 16 will receive a Min of
$100 upward. As always three
women will be guaranteed to
the top 16 plus three Super Seniors. Minimum of 2 men and

Semi Finals.
First place as always will be
$1,000 Min and up to $2,800

You want drama in L.A. bowling?
How about this scenario?
Gun-slinging local bowlers Johnnie Englehart, Bob Englehart, Tyler Baker, Bill Plummer and Elizabeth Fonvergne shoot it
out in a high-stakes, stepladder finals at Winnetka Bowl.
The winner goes home with a new Honda Civic.
It could happen. All five of those elite bowlers have qualified
for the semifinals of Winnetka Bowl’s “Win a Honda” tournament that will culminate in the July 26 finals.
Of course, there are plenty of other top bowlers who have
qualified for the semifinals as well. Those names include bowling thoroughbreds such as Scott Englehart (Johnnie’s son and
Bob’s nephew), Frank Martinez Jr. and Kevin Gross. And there
are some dark-horse qualifiers such as Teresa Lauer, Rosie Bates,
Deanna Peters, Kathy Brening-Ray and Greg Kolski.
It’s a handicap tournament so players who have never bowled
a perfect game or 800 series have a shot at claiming the top
prize.
Already, about 70 bowlers have qualified for the semifinals,
says Mike Willis, who has served as the Winnetka Bowl manager
for 47 years. He expects the June 28 semifinals will consist of
about 120 players before it’s whittled down to five for the stepladder finals.
The “Win a Honda” drama will gain steam Sunday, March 22
when Winnetka Bowl will hold another in its series of monthly
qualifying tournaments, starting at 1 p.m.
The top five finishers will join the already existing qualifiers in the semifinals. The competition is open to United States
Bowling Congress adult members. Entry fee is $20.
For those not acquainted with the stepladder finals, it’s a format that’s often used in some scratch leagues and Professional
Bowlers Assn. tournaments.
Typically, it involves five bowlers vying for the title. The
lowest-ranked bowler, who is seeded fifth, takes on the secondlowest bowler, who is seeded fourth. The loser is eliminated and
the winner then takes on the third-seeded bowler, and so on, until
the champion is crowned.
Thus, the top seed needs to win only one match to become
the champion. The lowest-ranked player, by contrast, has to win
four matches to claim the title.
As for that final day of competition, Willis says, “I think
there’ll be a lot of suspense, a lot of excitement. There will be a
car waiting at the end of the day.”

the game with nine strikes and
held off Barnes, 279-259. But
the Atom Splitters won the
match behind a powerful allaround team that included Bryon Smith, Dom Barrett, Wes
Malott and Tommy Jones.
Silver Lake’s five bowlers
were often referred to as “the
Dream Team” because they
were so strong from Player 1
through 5.
A testament to Silver
Lake’s deep bench was the
2015 re-draft.
Malott was the second
player selected in the re-draft,
taken by the Pittsburgh Jack
Rabbits. The Atom Splitters
then gobbled up Barnes two
selections later. And Barrett
was selected on the next draft
pick – by the Philadelphia Hitmen. That made it three Silver
Lake players who were drafted
in the first round.
Silver Lake manager Mark
Baker earned a lot of credit for
putting together that league
champion. But Silver Lake’s
2015 team doesn’t appear
nearly as strong.
After Barnes, Silver Lake
drafted Mika Koivuniemi,
Tom Daugherty, Dick Allen
and Craig Nidiffer. It’s a team
with plenty of potential but by
no means a “Dream Team.”
The same goes for the X’s
2015 team.
The X have surrounded
Belmonte with Stuart Williams, Martin Larsen, Patrick
Allen and Andres Gomez.
Gomez will be bowling with
the X for his third season.
The eight league teams
begin competition March 2829. ESPN will televise all the
rounds of the league competition tape-delayed.

CONGRATULATIONS! Gregory Jacobs“(better known as Jake”) and teammate Bob DeAlba
who “rolled past” their opponents on our Final Position Day February 19th to earn their title as
League Champions. While Bob is a very experienced and accomplished high average bowler, Jake
had to work hard all season to build his average to a current 159 in his attempt to contribute to their
weekly wins.
Although the championship was being chased by three or four teams, for most of the season,
Jake and Bob managed to stay on top by a very small margin. It boiled down to them winning one
of the final three games to capture the title. Although Jake has a 279 Game Award to his credit, this
was the first “crown award” for him since being introduced to bowling at age 12.
Jake has been a faithful member of our league and has served as League President for over ten
years. He is very resourceful in assisting in all areas to help maintain a so-called “family atmosphere” within our league. Jake has a loving wife and four children and serves at one of our local
hospitals as a Respiratory Therapist.

BURBANK — Let me get one thing out of the way right
off...”Nice tush, Tish”. Yeah, I said it and now the elephant
has escaped the room. Or has it? This has been a very
popular greeting repeated to me and I may have to amend
my will to include it on my gravestone! Seriously though, I
am very pleased with the joy bowlers have expressed after
having watched my Justin Beiber episode. After all, it encompassed two things dear to my heart, bowling and fun.
Writing this little column every week has brought me
great pleasure and again, I have to thank all those that
continue to read it and take the time to tell me they do. I am
especially pleased when bowlers believe they recognize
themselves or fellow bowlers.
It takes all of us to keep the passion for the sport growing. I know I am guilty-as-charged for continuing my efforts
to entice others into my addiction. I want everyone to enjoy the many benefits of bowling madness. The friends I
have made, the things I have learned, the children I have
watched grow into adult bowlers are only the nuggets of
the motherlode of being a bowler. Dig in everyone!

Fresno, CA—Founded in 1969 by the late, great head coach Glenn Carlson, the Fresno State
Bowling Club has produced some of the best bowlers through the years and continues as one of the
few colleges in CA to offer a bowling team. This club teaches the fundamentals of the game and
competing with integrity.
But, like all other organizations, it is tough to keep going without support and that is why former
Fresno State Bowling Club alumni, Kiel Jordan, is helping with an effort to conduct a fundraiser to
collect some much-needed funds for this club.
The Fresno State Bowling Club is a nonprofit organization that represents Fresno State University and the local bowling community. They compete against top ranked bowling teams from
across the nation at various locations throughout the United States. Currently both the Men’s and
Women’s teams have been invited to bowl for the Collegiate Club Championships which will be
held in Arlington Heights, Illinois, coming up April 4-5, 2015.
This fundraiser has a goal to raise $13,000 to cover this trip for plane tickets, baggage fees,
rental cars, hotel and meals. Please consider helping this club out at this time as they rely heavily
on fundraisers and donations throughout the year. These club bowlers are also the role models for
the next generation of Bulldog Bowlers!

We had plenty of high scores (scratch) : Open Div. - Brent
Hagan bowled 796 in team, 736 in Singles and 278 game in
doubles; Genka Cabatu - 791 in singles with a 279 and a 278
game. E.J. Rogers bowled a 289 game in singles along with Ron
Hirano, Scott Hong, Bob Waters and Ron Sargent bowling 289
games in their various events. Many 278 and 279 games. The
highlight of the tournament was Keven Jones bowling a 300 in
his doubles event and Lanny Ross with a smokin’ 298 in team
and Roger Stone a 290 also in team.
We had high scores also in the Womens: 3 700 series, a 689,
687, 666, 661 and 654. High games of 269, 267, 266, 263, 256
and 254 were also recorded.
The high series for the youth, a 685, was bowled by Kasey
Uyesugi and 12 600 series were bowled along with the high
game of 269 by Carl Pena and a 264 by Cory Compte along with
18 200 games.
All in all, a high scoring event with plenty of smiling faces.
A lot of hard work put in by the Orange County board, all volunteers, scorekeepers and efficient staff at Fountain Bowl contributed to a well-run tournament. Thank you to all who worked
and to Fountain Bowl for hosting! All participants are listed on
our website: ocusbc.org so please check it out and find out just
exactly where you placed.
Our next tournament will be the Senior Singles Tournament
at Saddleback Lanes in July. Check your centers for the entry
