High School. She earned
10 cents for each bowler
in her Physical Education
League.
Everyone I spoke to said
Toni was the best league
secretary they have had.
She is known for the concern she has for her bowlers

OXNARD — At the top
of the California United
States Bowling Congress
website is a prominent slogan. It reads:
“The best bowlers come
from California.”
If you live in the “City
of Angels,” you’d like to
think so.
One thing is sure.
When the Professional
Bowlers Assn. held a tournament a while back at
now-defunct Tournament
Bowl in Oxnard, that statement was certainly true.
The tournament was
held Oct. 7-10, 1965.
That was 50 years ago
and California bowlers
ruled the roost in that competition, which was called
the Oxnard Open.
Even though out-ofstater and eventual Hallof-Famer Johnny Guenther
of Seattle won the event –
his first PBA tournament

DEAF SENIOR BOWLERS OF AMERICA QUALIFYING & MATCH PLAYS RESULTS
CARPENTER AND JOINER LEDS RESPECTIVE DSBA QUALIFYING ROUNDS
LAS VEGAS — The 19th annual Deaf Senior Bowlers of America held on October 13-15 at The Orleans Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center drew 18 women and 49 men for their respective prestigious Queens and Classic tournaments.
The women and men started their respective 4 games qualifying rounds on Wednesday morning for the women’s top 8
bowlers Queens Match Plays rounds while the men do the same for their top 16 men players Classic Match Play event
both on Thursday morning.
Among the women entrants were the defending and three time (2010, 13-14) champion Kathy Seymour (CA) seeking her 3rd consecutive title and 4 former champions seeking their 2nd title, Lyndene Higginbotham (’02)(AZ), Sharon
Duran (’05) (CA), Celia Salcedo (’08) and Mary Sickinger (’12) (CA). The men’s defending champion Arkley Wright
(’14) (TX) led 4 other men seeking their 2nd title, Robert Smith (’08) (TX), Gorman Low (’10) (C A), Ted Thomas (’11)
(NE) and Donald Sever (’13) (CA).
In the women’s round Zoe Ann Joiner (CA) closed with a 224 after games of 144-171-134 for 673 plus 220 handicap
893 total as top woman qualifier. Sharon Caldwell (CA) placed 2nd 30 pins behind with 663 plus 200 handicap for 863.
Texan LuAnn Burkhalter-Mills rolled the round’s high scratch (163-171-173-195) 702 series plus 152 handicap 854
total for 3rd place.
Defending champion Kathy Seymour qualified in 6th with her 838 and 3 others seeking 2nd titles also qualified,
Duran and Sickinger were tied for 4th with their 841 and Salcedo tied with the eventual winner Barbara Loniewski (TX)
for 7th and 8th with their 830.
In the men’s event Floyd Carpenter (TX) with 185 average shot 234-204-236-180 for 854 plus 80 handicap 934 total
as the top qualifier. Eight pins back in 2nd place was Bob Bergan (CA) with 246-190-171-199 for 806 plus 120 handicap
926. In 3rd five pins back was the eventual winner Emad Aranki (CA) with 150 average rolling way over average scores
of 169-199-156-205 for 729 plus 192 handicap for 921.
A senior with 218 average and zero handicap, Darrell Stogryn (AZ) rolled the event’s high game and series with
235-209-268-205 for 917 to place 4th four pins behind. The last two qualifying places 15th and 16th were taken by
Billy Downing (TX) and Pipop Jarukasem ( ) same 834 totals. Failing by just one pin in 17th place was the defending
champion Arkley Wright. Also 4 other former winners failed to qualify.
DSBA HAS A NEW QUEENS CHAMPION BARBARA LONIEWSKI
In Deaf Senior Bowlers of America’s Queen’s match play event there were 4 former champions and 4 non champions, each wanting to win the title. Tough loss for top qualifier Zoe Ann Joiner (CA) and 3rd place qualifier Lu Ann
Burkhalter-Mills (TX) as both were eliminated in the 2nd round. Then in 3rd round Kathy Seymour was denied her third
title and Celia Salcedo her try for 2nd title. Meanwhile a newcomer Barbara Loniewski (TX) won all her three rounds
matches and got seeded into title finals.
That leaves Mary Sickinger (CA) , Sharon Duran (CA) and non champion Sharon Caldwell (CA) with one loss each.
In 4th round with Duran on a bye, Sickinger in her eighties eliminated Caldwell 151+63/214 to 156+50/206 and then
in 5th round, faced Duran and eliminated her 164+63/227 to 124+52/176. Sickinger moved to the title finals against the
waiting Loniewski and Loniewski denied Sickinger her 2nd title by winning 156+40/196 to Sickinger’s 121+63/184.

IT’S EMAD ARANKI’S WEEK AT LAS VEGAS AS DSBA CLASSIC CHAMPION
The way Emad Aranki was bowling during Deaf Senior Bowlers of America Tournament, scoring way over his 150
entering average along with his 48 handicap, no one had a chance to beat him. In the DSBA Classic Top 16 Bowlers
Match Play event, Aranki had qualified in 3rd place and won all his 6 matches without a loss. His 6 games were 169192-179-202-190-194 and add his 48 handicap to each score helped him.
In the championship match Aranki was against Wayne Berke ( ) who had 175 average and 28 handicap. Berke
qualified in 7th place and lost his first match with a 137 but won his next 5 matches scoring 190-193-214-190-194. In
winning the title Aranki scored his best game of the day 204 as Berke rolled a 190. Congratulations to Emad Aranki as
DSBA 19th Classic Champion.
Top qualifier Floyd Carpenter had two losses and was eliminated in 2nd round.
Thanks to all bowlers for a successful tournament. Next year’s DSBA tournament will be on first week in October.
Todd Becker Finds A Perfect
Ending For His Series

WINNETKA – Sometimes bowlers will pick the most
unexpected times to pop a big game.
Just ask Todd Becker.
Becker, a 50-year-old Woodland Hills resident, slumbered through games of 162 and 160 earlier this month in
his River Maniacs league at Winnetka Bowl. “They were
in the toilet,” recalled Becker a week later.
Then in Game 3, Becker got hot. Real hot.
As Becker remembered, he “found his line and it kept
working” – all the way to a 300 game, the first of his career. Becker’s perfect game broke his previous high of
279.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Becker said. “After bowling my
second game, I was ready to pack it in.”
Becker disclosed that he was focusing so much in the
third game that he wasn’t even aware of his unfolding 300.
“I knew it was at least in the high 200s,” he said. “I knew
I had a good game.”
Becker entered the Monday night league competition
with a 179 average and a career high series of 701. He said
he had been bowling since he was 10 and one of his goals
was to rack up a 300.
“It took 40 years for me to get my first 300,” Becker
said. “[Colleague] Vince [Koeller] said it took him 40
years to get his first 300. It shows it could happen to anyone.”
Becker got a raucous reaction from approximately half
the bowling center after he drilled his final shot. First to
congratulate Becker was 13-time perfect-game marksman Mike Olson, who had crept behind Becker on his approach.
“Mike was already in my lane after I released it,” said
Becker, chuckling. “He was right in my face.”
Said Olson: “He buried his last two shots.”
Then Olson turned to Becker: “You don’t even remember. Your mind is probably blank.”
Becker just smiled.
“Bowling has always been my passion,” Becker said. “I
can be sick as a dog and I’ll go bowling. I never miss.”
Becker said the closest he previously got to a 300 was
when he nailed his first nine shots.
As for his goals now, Becker said:
“I want an 800. I’d like a double [back-to-back 300s],
but that’s a bitch. So I want an 800.”

In 6-9th places were
Jeff Panlilio, Jun Contreras, Lord Ferguson, and Fel

and Michael Kristich, $110
each.
Now it was Joven Bolanos vs John Armenia for
the right to bowl Mrs Gaddison for the title. Joven
did well in a big 233-207
count. Mr. Armenia ever
a gentleman was 3rd with
fine bowling got a check
for $200.
Now title game was on
Norma Gaddisonvs Bolanos, with Norma electing to
have Joven lead off. He did
with a “3 bagger”, Norma
was Strike, Spare, Strike
but she opened in frame 4
then chopped the 1-2. With
a spare Bolanos now led
by 30 pins. Both bowlers were clean the rest of
the way. Norma could not
catch a break. The margin
stayed the same s after the
first three frames, and Bolanos claimed his 5th Title.
He has been with ABTA
over 20+ Years. We were
both younger then Joven :-)
Joven bowled well, and deserved the win. Norma Gaddsion nearly took her first
title, as she bowled lights
out at Bowlium. Only that
open in frame two plagued
her title run. Very Good

The crown jewel of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VII presented by Silver
Legacy will be the season’s final major championship and it will include the first live
prime-time telecast of a PBA Tour event in 14 years when the stepladder finals get underway on ESPN at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. local time) Thursday, Dec. 17 at Reno’s National
Bowling Stadium.
Reno properties offering World Championship wagering include the Silver Legacy
and Circus Circus. Las Vegas properties offering World Championship wagering are the
Aria, Bellagio, Circus Circus, Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, Mirage,
Monte Carlo and New York New York. Wagers may be placed in person at any of the
properties’ sports book locations. PBA staff, contractors and World Series participants
(members and non-members) are prohibited from making wagers on the event.
The focal point of the World Championship will be the PBA Tour’s ultimate test of
versatility and endurance, both physical and mental. The five players who qualify for the
ESPN stepladder finals will survive a total of 66 games of qualifying and round-robin
match play bowled on the PBA’s Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and World Championship lane conditions Dec 8-13.
The opening line odds for wagering on the World Championship are as follows, as of
Nov. 17. The odds were established by Jay Rood, Vice President of Race and Sports for
MGM Resorts International based on performances in past PBA World Championships
and PBA Tour competition in recent years. Based on that information, Rood has established Australia’s Jason Belmonte, the winner of four major titles over the past two years,
as a 7/2 favorite in the opening line followed by Bill O’Neill at 9/2, Wes Malott at 5/1
and Sean Rash at 7/1. Rood also has established Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts,
who will be bowling PBA competition for the first time, as a 200/1 longshot.

While a first for the World Championship, it is not the first time wagering has been
offered on PBA events. The Red Rock Bowling Center and former Showboat Lanes in
Las Vegas have offered wagering on PBA events in the past.

Julian Zavala Earns Junior Gold Berth

Julian Zavala secured his berth in Junior Gold Championships by winning the first round of the JAT Sport
Juniors 2015-16 season at Keystone Lanes. Julian’s 36
points edged out Solomon Salama who had 34 points. Julian averaged 181 for the first round and had league high
game (257) and series (854 for four games). Congratulations Julian!

62 PLAYERS ENTER 2016 PBA LEAGUE DRAFT POOL
The eight PBA League managers will have difficult decisions to make in filling the final two berths on each of their
teams for the 2016 PBA League program after 62 players formally announced their wishes to participate in the 2016
PBAL competition March 31-April 3 at Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine.

His Mark Again

WINNETKA – Mario Jordan doesn’t hurl his bowling
ball as fast as he once did and his average isn’t hovering in
the 180s and 190s anymore.
No matter.
Jordan celebrates every day he’s out at Winnetka Bowl
taking part in his nightly leagues on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Jordan suffered a stroke in November 2012 when he
was in the midst of teaching art at Manual Arts High
School in south-central Los Angeles.
“I went in that morning and the last thing I remember
was that students were coming to class. Then I woke up in
the afternoon,” Jordan said.
Jordan was found to have a blood clot on the right side
of his brain. With treatment and rehab, the 63-year-old
Jordan says he “feels good now.”
He’s back on the lanes this year – a joyful re-engagement with a sport in which he’s participated since his days
in Kansas City in the 1980s.
“That’s all I talked about when I was away from the
bowling alley,” Jordan said. “During my doctor visits, I’d
say, ‘I can’t wait ’til I get back out there.’ It was one of
my incentives to get healthy again. Bowling is my incentive.”
In recent years, the right-handed marksman has typically averaged at least in the 180s. But in 2006 – the year
when he moved to L.A. from Missouri – Jordan carved out
an even 200 average in the Friday Vegas League at Winnetka Bowl.
That’s been his high-water mark.

7-17, from the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, the XF team will head to Tokyo to provide exclusive live coverage
of the DHC PBA Japan Invitational, Friday, Jan. 15 through Sunday, Jan. 17. The tournament, featuring a field of 16
international and 16 Japanese professional stars, offers a PBA Tour title and a $40,000 first prize. Chris Barnes is defending champion.

Jordan is averaging in the 140s this season as he makes
adjustments in his effort to return to his previous form.
“He had to buy a new ball so he could hold it,” recalled
Jordan’s wife, Delores. “He’s working his way back now.
And that’s a good thing. Maybe by next year, he’ll be back
to the 200 mark.”
QATAR, SAUDI ARABIA EVENTS PRECEDE GEICO PBA WSOB VII
Already, he’s blasted a season-high 190 game a few
weeks ago. His all-time high is 289 – “I blew it in the
tenth,” he remembers. And he has a 700 series on his resume – that coming during a team tournament in Missouri
in the ’90s that earned him a $1,200 bonanza.
Two PBA International-World Bowling Tour events will provide the final tuneup for players heading into the GEICO
PBA World Series of Bowling VII presented by Silver Legacy in Reno Dec. 7-19.
The PBA International-World Bowling Tour Qatar Open will be held at Qatar Bowling Center in Doha, Qatar, Nov.
21-27, followed by the PBA International-World Bowling Tour 9th Kingdom International Open at Universal Bowling

PBA REGIONAL UPDATE: WARREN CLOSES IN ON WEBER WITH 44TH PBA REGIONAL TITLE
Chris Warren of Grants Pass, Ore., defeated Nathan Bohr of Amarillo, Texas, 222-205, to win $3,500 and his 44th
PBA Regional title in the second annual PBA Harmony Lanes Southwest Open, presented by Budweiser, in Colorado
Springs Sunday.
The 52-year-old Warren, who ranks second on the all-time PBA Regional titles list, is four behind PBA Hall of Famer
Pete Weber $B!G (Bs record 48 titles.
Warren struck out in the 10th frame to secure his 45th overall regional title (he also has one PBA50 regional win).
Weber and Dale Traber of Cedarburg, Wis., are tied for the lead in overall PBA Regional titles with 52 each. In addition
to 48 standard titles, Weber has won four PBA50 regionals while Traber has 39 standard and 13 PBA50 regional wins.
As qualifying leader, Warren earned byes to the best-two-of-three-game Round of 8 where he defeated Frank Guccione of Castle Rock, Colo., 2-0. He then disposed of Kris Koeltzow of Wheat Ridge, Colo., 252-178, in the semifinal
round. Bohr defeated amateur Cody Vaughn from Arvada, Colo., 2-1, in the Round of 12; Wayne Stellick from Arvada,
Colo., 2-0 in the Round of 8, and Jason Duran of Greely, Colo., 233-227, in his semifinal match.

Responded Jordan: “I’m working on it.”
And he added: “Ultimately I want to be back where I
was before the stroke.”
Jordan says he’s fortunate that he bowls with “a good
group of folks in both leagues.” He admits that he still
experiences some stroke-related moments – “I get a little
tired by the third game and I don’t bowl as well.”
But all in all, things are going well in his comeback.
And how much does he enjoy the game?
“Heck, I can’t get out there fast enough,” he said.
Mario Jordan is finding his groove again after suffering a
stroke three years ago.

rules. She is always positive and does everything in her
power to promote her leagues. According to representatives of the Citrus Belt, Toni maintains an excellent working relationship with Association personnel.
When bowlers speak of Toni you hear adjectives such
as efficient, effective, impartial, informed and responsive.
The Good Times League bowlers will tell you that Toni
is personally responsible for keeping the league together
over the years. It should be noted that Toni was selected
for this award from a field of thirty-eight nominees. Impressive. I was impressed when told that she was selected
from such a large field worthy candidates. I have been a
bowler for over fifty years and have known Toni for over
a decade. I have observed hundreds of league secretaries
and can honestly say that I have met only a few other secretaries in her “league” and none better. Congratulations
Toni and thank you BOWLING NEWS for recognizing

In that 1965 Oxnard Open, Bud Horn of Los Angeles
(eighth) and Norm Meyers of Los Angeles (10th) gave
California four finishers among the top 10.
There were plenty more California money winners in
the event. Right behind Meyers were three Californians.
Bob Phillips of Richmond took 11th, Jim St. John of San
Jose was 12th and Ev Collins of San Mateo placed 13th.
Also winning money from California were Vig Lange
of Ventura (17th), Ed Bourdase of Fresno (18th), Ron
Winger of Van Nuys (19th), Wally Wagner of Brea (23rd)
and Jerry Hale of Richmond (27th).
Incidentally, the state with the next highest number of
money winners behind California was Texas with five.
Guenther earned $3,000 for his first-place finish. Not
only did he take home the top prize but Guenther set two
world records in the Oxnard Open. He rolled 2,022 for
one eight-game block (252.8 average) and came back with
a 1,808 for a 16-game total of 3,830 (239.4).
Still, Guenther had to share tournament laurels with the
state of California, which showed in this competition that
it indeed possessed the nation’s “best bowlers.”
