DOWNEY — The annual playoffs for the Brunswick Invitational have
been a staple during June
at Del Rio Lanes for so
many years, but rarely does
the championship pack
the suspense, game in and
game out, that this one did
tonight. The match was
between DV8 and the Professional Approach, who
had both outlasted 18 other
teams over the long winter
season to make it to this far.
And when all was said and
done, the DV8 squad had
won the championship.
The match was a best of
five, using all of the patterns that had been bowled
on during the course of the
season. First team to win
three games would win the
title, and the cash. With
four patterns in play during
the year, should the match
go to game five, the Professional Approach would
pick the pattern for the final
game, a right they earned
DV8: Sam Hitchcock, Dave Kovach, Ashkan Tahvildaran, Scott Poddig, Jeff Carr and
Del Rio Lanes General Manager Mike Cammarata.

the 10th frame. With both
teams trading an open and
a couple marks, the game
came down to the anchors.
Billy Myers Jr. was on a
strike, and proceeded to get
the first in the 10th. That
put the pressure on the anchor for DV8, Sam Hitchcock. He calmly responded
with a double, to ice game
one and put DV8 in front,
1-0. Myers led the pair with
202, but very steady scoring from DV8 was enough
to win, 716-699.
Game #2 was bowled
on the fourth round pattern,
the USBC El Paso team
event shot. This game belonged to the Professional
Approach.
They didn’t
get off to a great start, with
four opens in the first two
frames, but DV8 kept giving the momentum back,
until the Pro Approach
team started to find their
lines and put some doubles
together.
Scott Poddig
put together a five bagger
for DV8 to try and spark
a rally, but he didn’t have
enough help, while the Professional Approach kept
filling frames. Art Jones Jr.
finished with 208 and Sonny Dew had 206, to lead the
Pro Approach in this game
to a 757-672 victory, evening the match at one game
apiece.
The third game used the
house shot, the first round
pattern, and the strikes began to come, as expected.
Strikes, and strings of them
throughout the game for
both teams. The lefties
struggled a bit, one for each
team, as Jeff Carr of DV8
and Billy Myers of Professional Approach couldn’t
quite find the line, or carry,
or breaks. Jeff struck a
bit early, while Billy uncharacteristically struggled

title, when Bohn left a

“All the matches were
very close,” said the 54year-old Monacelli. “It was
important to stay focused
and low key, not get too excited if I’m leading or too
low if I’m losing. If I stay
calm I’ll have a clear mind
to make the adjustments
and the good shots that I
need to make.”
In the semifinal match,
Monacelli defeated hall of
famer Walter Ray Williams
Jr., of Oxford, Fla., trying
for his 11th career PBA50
Tour title and second of
the season, 249-245. Monacelli needed two strikes
and a seven count in the
10th frame but threw three
strikes to win the match.
“That was an example
of a good test for my mental game,” Monacelli said.
“I basically needed to have
three strikes in the 10th to
win and if I wasn’t calm
so that I could make good
shots I would have lost the
match.”

WINNETKA — Mario McKenzie, 46, and Mike Cohen, 53, both pre-registered as single entrants needing
partners for the first Sport-Tap Doubles tournament June 4
at Winnetka Bowl.
In a previously bowled doubles event, the two finished
a forgettable 14th place as a team. Then crossing paths a
second time, when paired together again by chance, McKenzie, who averages 195 and Cohen a 175, outbowled 37
other teams to finish in first place.
This was no easy feat considering their competition
consisted of some of the Valley’s most prominent bowlers: Charles Kenny, who’s currently averaging a staggering 242 and Johnnie Englehart, who has booked 63 perfect
games and 67 800 series.
When asked about bowling the Montreal (oil) pattern,
Cohen admits to having a slight edge as he has been bowling a sport-shot league at Corbin Bowl in Tarzana; however, it was McKenzie, with zero sport-shot experience who
turned out to be the big winner of the day. Taking home
more than $400 in winnings, McKenzie credits, “Proper
preparation prevents poor performance. I was just trying
to focus on my bowling and carry over all the things I’ve
been practicing.”
Cohen chimes in with advice: “Don’t get angry; whatever happens, happens and let the pins fall where they
may.” Positive, and also confident, “Of course I expected
to win though,” Cohen half-jokes.

will be carried over to July’s event as none of the 76 participants bowled a perfect no-tap game.
Cohen finished with a 620 series (193, 230, 197) and McKenzie recorded a stunning 762 series (288, 243, 231). The
two won $386 for their first-place finish, scoring a handicap-aided 1,598.
Dave Quintero and Dave Quintero Jr. took second at 1,526 and won $260; Cari Hansen and Roger Paskell finished
third at 1,474 and claimed $130; and Ida Farber and Veronica Boone placed fourth at 1,466 and earned $60.
Mike Willis, longtime Winnetka Bowl general manager thought, “It was a wonderful tournament and looking forward

to the next event.” Speaking to me, Mike says, “You and Carl (Comrie) did a great job!”
Co-Tournament director, Carl Comrie, laughs and states, “The tournament turned out so good because Amy promoted
it very well, BUT I would like ALL bowlers to pre-register and if you can’t come, call somebody!!” In his friendly Jamaican accent, Comrie warns, “I want this entire quote published, you hear? Bowlers need to pre-register.”

Tommy Jones, who are tied
for second with 44 points.
Sean Rash is fourth with 31 points followed by Jonesboro Open runner-up Kyle Troup
(23). Steven Taylor, Tim Mack and Francois Lavoie are tied for seventh with 18 points.
Five players are tied for ninth with 17 points each: Patrick Allen, Shawn Maldonado,
Tim Gillick, Anthony Simonsen and Connor Pickford.
The Xtra Frame PBA Tour points race is designed for a close, hotly-contested battle.
In each XF Tour event, the winner earns 25 points. Second place earns 19 points, third 18
points, etc., with points awarded on a one-point declining basis through 20 places.
Tackett earned his 53 points by finishing ninth in the bowlingball.com PBA Maine
Shootout (12 points), first in the Xtra Frame PBA Storm Open in Carpentersville, Ill. (25
points) and fifth in Jonesboro (16 points). Ciminelli was first in Maine (25), second in
Carpentersville (19) and 33rd in Jonesboro, earning no points. Jones was second in Maine
(19), first in Jonesboro (25) and didn’t bowl in Carpentersville.
The fourth event in the Xtra Frame PBA Tour series will be the Xtra Frame PBA Lubbock Sports Open from Lubbock, Texas, June 24-26. Completing the series will be the
PBA-PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles from Houston, Texas, July

LAS VEGAS — Pete Weber’s record-setting victory in the Suncoast PBA Senior
U.S. Open included a fourth consecutive PBA50 Tour title, but that was just one in a series of highlights from the PBA50 Tour’s first major championship of the 2016 season:
● In his third Suncoast Senior U.S. Open Tournament appearance, Weber joined Tom
Baker (2005-06), Wayne Webb (2008-09) and Amleto Monacelli (2012-13) as the
fourth player to win back-to-back titles in the event. Weber also had a runner-up finish in
2014 when he lost to Norm Duke, 214-174, in the title match.
● Weber’s win was his third PBA50 major title (he also won the 2013 USBC Senior
Masters). Tom Baker has won the most PBA50 majors with four, including two Senior
U.S. Opens (2005-2006) and two Senior Masters (2006-2007).
● Weber is tied with the late Earl Anthony for the most majors won in PBA Tour competition (10), but with his three PBA50 Tour majors, Weber has set himself apart with 13
overall majors. Anthony never won a major title in his limited PBA50 Tour career.
● Harry Sullins needs a win in the Suncoast Senior U.S. Open to hit for the cycle.
With his second place finish this year he now has a second, a third (2011), a fourth (2009)
and a fifth-place finish (2010).

PBA Offers Incentives to New, Reinstated Members
Exclusive benefits available to bowlers chasing the dream;
military bowlers can join at no cost for 2016
CHICAGO – The Professional Bowlers Association kicked off a membership drive today, offering bowlers who are chasing the dream of competing at the highest levels of the
sport a special waiver for the traditional initiation fee, an opportunity to participate in the
members-only PBA World Series of Bowling VIII and, for active members of the American Armed Forces, complimentary membership for the duration of the 2016 season.
PBA’s 2016 membership drive arrives at the perfect time, with a PBA Tour schedule
looming that offers seven Xtra Frame PBA Tour title events, a multi-event PBA Fall
Swing in Detroit and the PBA Fall Classic in Las Vegas in addition to the eighth annual
PBA World Series of Bowling which will close out the year at Reno’s National Bowling
Stadium.
In addition to the domestic schedule, PBA Tour players will have the option to participate in a handful of PBA International-World Bowling Tour events, and an extensive
schedule of more than 100 PBA Regional tournaments across the U.S. while women and
players 50-and-older have their own exclusive opportunities.
To help new players get started in PBA competition, and former members return to
action, PBA is waiving the traditional initiation fee to join the PBA between June 1 and
August 31. Bowlers who are on active-duty with the U.S. military will be granted free
membership for the rest of 2016; all they have to do is apply. And newly-graduating collegiate bowlers are eligible for a low-cost PBA24 membership which allows them to test
the PBA waters without committing to a full membership.
PBA members are eligible to enter all PBA tournaments, receive entry priority and
lower-cost entry fees for select events that are open to non-members, and receive a variety of benefits depending upon their membership level.

PACIFIC COAST DEAF BOWLING ASSOCIATION SET TO CELEBRATE IT’S 75TH
ANNIVERSARY JUNE 27-30 AT SUNSET STATION HOTEL BOWLING CENTER
HENDERSON — In the June 2nd issue of Bowling News’ National Deaf Bowling
News column, this writer wrote about having Pacific Coast Deaf Bowling Association’s
operating rules changed to like that of Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association. It was not
a simple task but it was hastily done in time to present for a vote in the captains and host
clubs’ 1961 meeting. This writer was fortunate to have help of two late friends Frank
Bush and Paul Fest. Charles Hart and host Valley Silent Club appointed me as the secretary treasurer and gave me the power to select the PCDBA President and Vice-President.
Bush and Fest were selected to fill the offices respectively.
Perfectly as Frank Bush, prior to moving to California from Chicago, served two years
(1940-41) as member of the GLDBA Law Committee and in Los Angeles was PCDBA
secretary and director of 1948 tournament. Paul Fest as mentioned before was the first
secretary in PCDBA’s founding helped when we three worked on the progress of changing the rules. Three before tournament date we completed and mailed the new rules
out to deaf clubs in PCDBA region requesting their captains and delegates to attend the
important meeting during the tournament. Then Bush regretfully resigned as president
because his daughter in Seattle was getting and the ceremony was on same date as the
tournament.
Both Hart and Fest did not want replace Bush, so the club’s President Bennie Maucere
was asked to take over the job of running the meeting and help Fest on each rules. During the tournament the two days meeting went well with most of the rules approved with
some to be ratified in the next year’s event at Spokane. We are grateful to Hart, Maucere,
Fest and Bush for their help in this change.
The first Pacific Coast Deaf Masters event with 19 entries was given a trial run and
also to be voted at Spokane for approval to be part of PCDBA event.
75TH ANNIVERSARY PCDBA DRAWS 26 TEAMS
HENDERSON — Twenty six foursome men teams will be present at Sunset Station
Hotel Bowling Center June 27-30 for the 75th anniversary Pacific Coast Deaf Bowling
Association tournament with Hawaii Silent Bowlers hosting the event. Hawaii Silent
Bowlers also hosts Pacific Coast Deaf Women’s Bowling Association’s 69th tournament
at the same venue. This writer regrets not having the number of women’s team entries.
Of the 106 men entries there are twenty bowlers with 200 plus averages making this
event thrilling to watch. The 106 men will be split into two squads A and B. The tournament starts on Tuesday morning at 8 AM with A squad bowling the 3 games singles event
with doubles 3 games following, The B squad starts afternoon at 1 PM bowling 3 games
singles and then 3 games doubles event following. At the end there will be a meeting.
The men teams start on Wednesday morning at 8 AM and after lunch break the 53
brave men entered in the 55th annual Connie Marchione Deaf Masters will bowl the 4
games qualifying round at 12:30 PM. The top 32 bowlers will enter in Thursday morning’s match play doubles elimination bracket with one winner left at finish for the championship. The senior men also have their own Senior Masters with 27 entered with the
top 16 all events 9 games scores going in match play. In Thursday evening there will be
the 75th anniversary banquet with dinner buffet only for bowlers and those who paid for
this banquet.

WINNETKA – One thing is clear. Some bowling tournaments are making a splash in
the San Fernando Valley and others are struggling to find their footing.
One week after a sport-tap doubles tournament lured 38 teams to Winnetka Bowl, the
West Coast Senior Tour was forced to cancel its June 11 event at the same site.
The WCST was hoping to generate some excitement with its plans to return to the Valley – which would have marked the tour’s 402nd event in its 24-year history.
The senior tour hadn’t made a stop in the Valley since May 2012 when now-defunct
Mission Hills Bowl served as the tournament host.
But a lack of entries forced Dick Sanders, the WCST’s owner and director, to cancel
the event at Winnetka Bowl. “You can’t run a tour with 14, 15 people,” Sanders lamented. Interestingly, the tour has found strength in entries virtually everywhere but the
Valley. Thirty-six bowlers have already signed up to compete in the WCST’s next event
– a two-day tournament July 9-10 in Laughlin, Nev.
Half of the WCST’s 12 events this year are in Nevada where the tour regularly gets at
least 30 bowlers for each tournament. The tour, open to eligible players 60 and older, has
undergone numerous changes through its existence. For three straight years (1994-96),
the WCST averaged more than 100 bowlers a tournament. The tour attracted a staggering
233 players to Ventura for one tournament in 1995, Sanders said.
The tournaments were two-day affairs in those years, unlike the primarily one-day
events now. The tournaments attracted bowlers from Northern and Southern California
and Nevada those years. Now, the tour basically gets its players from the Southland and
Nevada. Winnetka Bowl, formerly called Canoga Park Bowl, used to be a mainstay in the
WCST lineup. It served as a WCST tournament site 10 times between the tour’s debut
year in 1993 and 2004. When Winnetka Bowl stopped drawing enough competitors, the
bowling house was dropped from the WCST schedule.
At one time, the Valley served as a cornerstone for WCST events.
The WCST had a 13-event schedule in its rookie year with three of those sites located
in the Valley. They included Winnetka Bowl, Brunswick Matador Bowl in Northridge
and now-defunct AMF Rocket Bowl in Chatsworth. All the WCST events that year took
place at bowling centers in Southern California. Sanders cited a number of factors that
were now hindering senior tournament entries in the Valley.
Traffic was a key reason, Sanders said. “Nobody wants to drive out to the San Fernando Valley for a one-day tournament and then come home on Saturday,” he said. “Who
wants to drive in San Fernando Valley traffic at 5 o’clock?” And he added: “You don’t
have any more scratch leagues in the Valley. Where do you think tournament bowlers
come from? It’s not the 180 [dollar entry fee].
“Whatever the situation, it’s just a tough go [in the Valley].”

them until the 10th frame,
with luck on Steve’s side,
as he struck out and won
by one pin. Jonathan came
in third place for $200. The
Horse, Steve paid $119 and
advanced to the championship game.
The championship game
started with Steve striking
the first four frames, opened
in the 5th but still ahead by
few pins. Henry started
with a strike, spared from
2nd frame to 8th frame and
a strike in the 9th. Steve
answered with a spare in
the 6th frame, but caught a
wash out in the 7th making
it very close, opened again
in the 8th, struck in th 9th
and 10th with a spare to finish with a 225 game with
handicap. Since Henry had
a strike in the 9th, he needed
the first strike in the 10th to
lock out Steve. He threw a
good ball but did not carry,
spared and needed a 9 count
to win by one pin.But luck
was not on his side. He had
managed an 8 count to tie
Steve’s 225 game forcing a
ONE GAME ROLLOFF.
The championship roll
off started with both bowlers marking, Henry started
strong with a spare and a
four bagger but still held
a comfortable lead. He
opened in th 6th and 8th
frames while Steve found
his stride, struck in the 8th,
9th, and 10th finishing with
a spare for 236 game. Due
to his open frames, Henry
was 10 pins behind and
needed to match Steve but
he was not able to strike.
He spared 9th to 10th with
a 235 game to lose by one
scant pin. Steve took home

ENTRIES OPEN FOR PBA FALL SWING
PRE-TOURNAMENT QUALIFIER
ALLEN PARK — Entries are now being accepted for
the PBA Fall Swing pre-tournament qualifier which will
be held Aug. 27 at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park,
Mich., the host center for the multi-event Fall Swing. The
PTQ – with a $120 entry fee – is open as an option to PBA
members who live within a 50-mile radius of Thunderbowl, giving members a chance to win a $750 paid entry
at a significant savings – and to non-members.
The six-game PTQ, to be bowled on the Wolf pattern,
will award 10 guaranteed entries into the Fall Swing. Nonmembers must win entries into the Fall Swing through the
PTQ, otherwise they will not be eligible to enter.
The PBA Fall Swing, set for Sept. 4-11, will include
the Wolf, Bear, Badger and Detroit Opens along with the
King of the Swing special event. Direct entries for PBA
members only will be accepted beginning June 15. The
$750 entry fee covers all five events.
The PBA also has announced entries for the PBA Fall
Classic, presented by South Point Bowling Plaza in Las
Vegas, will be accepted beginning July 5. The Fall Classic,
set for Oct. 28-Nov. 1, includes the Xtra Frame PBA Las
Vegas Open ($300 members, $350 non-members) and the
five-player PBA Team Challenge ($500 per member, $600
per non-member).
Entries for the PBA World Series of Bowling VIII, set
for Nov. 27-Dec. 11, will be accepted beginning July 15.
The entry fee is $1,000 for all events. WSOB VIII will be
open to PBA members only.

PORTLAND — Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, current home to the PBA Maine Experience, including PBA

Maine Shootout, has begun its multi-million-dollar expansion project that will add eight lanes to its existing facility
along with a rooftop deck, mezzanine level and more.
“We’re excited to be here because we think over the
next 10 to 15 years, Bayside is going to be a place where
there is a lot more housing, a lot more retail, a lot more
people living, working and eating,” said co-owner and
state Senator Justin Alfond. “I think we will be at the center of it.”
The expansion project is expected to create 30-40 summer construction jobs and 15-20 new full-time jobs when
the project is completed in November.

MONTCLAIR — Here’s some good news if you
thought you missed this year’s Fab 5 state bowling tournament. The event hasn’t been held; it just changed seasons.
The tournament finals will be held Dec. 4 at Bowlium
Lanes in the San Bernardino County city of Montclair.
Last year the tournament finals were held May 17 at
Keystone Lanes in Norwalk. Many Southland bowling
centers will hold mini-tournaments before the finals to determine which five-man teams will advance to Montclair.
Last year 16 teams took part in the finals.
The Fab 5 is a handicap tournament and will feature a
Team Baker format. Under this format, each of the team’s
five players will bowl two frames. The team’s anchor, for
instance, will bowl in frames five and 10.
Last year the Forest Donkeys team nailed down the
state title after advancing out of Forest Lanes in the Orange County city of Lake Forest. The five members were
Jessica Diso, Virgil Dunziellas, Robert Leahy, Brent Ilagan and Jon Diso.
The Donkeys dominated from the outset. Averaging
191 entering the event, the Donkeys averaged over 200 in
the preliminary round to secure the No. 1 seeding in the
five-team stepladder finals.
The Donkeys then breezed to a 207-146 victory in the
championship game, earning the $1,000 top prize.
The second-place team received $700 and the thirdplace team claimed $400.
Further details will be announced about which Southern
California bowling centers will hold the qualifying round
and on which day.

their teammate. But, even with those scores, it came down to the last bowlers, with
Hitchcock and Myers facing off for the game. Hitchcock went first, and struck. Myers
got the ball left, and left a washout. If he picked it up, Hitchcock would need to strike
again. Billy only managed to get three, and when Sam carried his second shot (for an 8
bagger), the game was essentially over. Sam struck again on the fill, for 264, and a 929919 win, putting DV8 one game away from the championship.
The fourth game moved to the third round pattern, the long oil. Early doubles from
Ramiro Garcia and Billy Myers got the Pro Approach off to a good start. On the other
hand, they had five opens in the first five frames, while DV8 stayed relatively clean. Two
more opens in the ninth, and another two in the tenth evened the match, again heading
into the final bowlers. With Billy Myers entering the 10th on a double, the advantage was
his. Sam Hitchcock started with a strike. Again, Myers leaked a shot left, which doesn’t
recover on the third round. For a minute, he had the 1-5, with the five falling late for a
lone head pin. Sam had an opportunity to double for the win, but pulled the ball badly,
getting a 7 count off the left side. Myers converted the spare and got 9 on the fill to win
the game, setting up a fifth and deciding round, 690-680.
As mentioned earlier, the Professional Approach got to choose the pattern for game
#5, and had opted for the round one shot, bowling on the house pattern again. This game
was all DV8 for the beginning. Jeff Carr started with the front eight. Dave Kovach had
four of the first five. Ashkan Tahvildaran did as well. With the lead growing every frame,
DV8 just got looser and put more and more pressure on the Professional Approach team,
which just made things worse. A match that had been so close throughout ended with a
dull thud, as DV8 won by 168 pins to seal the match and the championship.
Congratulations to Jeff Carr, Scott Poddig, Ashkan Tahvildaran, Dave Kovach and
Sam Hitchcock. They are our newest champions, and had an amazing season. All five
are first time winners of the league, and we’ll look forward to seeing them all back in the
future on any team they’re on.
Also congratulations to the Professional Approach team. Billy Myers Jr., Sonny Dew,
Ramiro Garcia and Art Jones Jr. had a great season, leading the league throughout, and
coming up only one game short. Still, $10000 for second place isn’t too bad.
We’ve come to terms on our entering average rules for our 31st season, which will
start in September. Keep your eye out for our ad as the season gets closer. And, in closing, I’d like to give very special thanks to all of the bowlers that help make this league so

JACOB CAMACHO is Heading
to Grand Canyon University

MURRIETA — I was down south the other day and
ran into Jacob Camacho. Jacob has been home for a
few months and bowling in Cal Oaks’ 640 Scratch Trio
League. League Secretary SCOTT FILIPI tells me Jacob
has the potential to be one of the best bowlers in the area
because of his smooth consistent game and his maturity.
Time will tell.
Jacob is a great example of the type of young person
bowling today. He and many of his contemporaries today
are college bound, college educated and college trained
bowlers. These youngsters are intelligent, poised and preparing for a career beyond bowling. I personally know
of two young bowlers who plan to become doctors and
several who are pursuing engineering degrees.
Jacob Camacho is one of those studying to become an
engineer. This fall he plans to study at Grand Canyon University in Glendale, Arizona. It will be his junior year on
a path to a Biomedical Engineering Degree.
Camacho’s first two college years were spent at Indiana
Tech in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He enjoyed his time there
and bowled on the Tech bowling team for one season.
He led Tech in average the year he competed with a
191.6 per game pace for 49 games in eleven events. One
of Jacob’s teammates at Tech was Kyle Koss of Las Vegas.
Koss was rated the twenty-third top college player in the
nation this season.
Jacob’s parents, Gerardo and Cecilia Camacho, have a
lot to be proud of. Jacob is a great bowler and an even better person. He is mature beyond his years and a fun guy to
be around if you enjoy dry humor. Thanks to the BOWLING NEWS for supporting California youth bowlers.

BURBANK — By the time this goes to print, I will have
returned from the CUSBC Convention. Otherwise known
as the State Convention. One of the proposals on the
agenda is to raise the state portion of our sanction dues by
$1.00. This is truly needed by the CUSBC. Before you fly
off the handle about dues, let me explain this.
Currently in our local Association (NLAC), we pay $19
per year. Of that $19, National (USBC) takes $10, State
(CUSBC) takes $1 and Local (NLAC) gets $8. While State
plays a smaller role in our bowling lives daily, it does play
a part and you can see how the balance is a bit out of
whack.
I would also like to remind all of you in the NLAC that our
Association has the lowest priced sanction fees around.
All surrounding counties and their associations are higher,
some by a little, some by a lot.
This proposal was on the agenda last year and was defeated. I am anxious to see what the outcome will be this
year and I will definitely report back to you all.

for a 702 series. Arnold learned to bowl in 1977 at age
7 while being tutored by his father and remained active in
the sport until 1990, returning to the game in 2005 to present. During these later years, Arnold has to his credit, (4)
700’s, the highest (757), bowled at South Point Lanes, Las
Vegas during league sweepers; one 300 game bowled at
Gable House Bowl; and highest league average 204.
