remaining. The first to be
eliminated was Don Julio Tequila. They battled
Cook’s Bowling Supply,
who had advanced through
the matches last Monday
night. The pattern that had
been drawn for this match
was the first round, our
house shot, and the highest
scoring of the four.
Cook’s Bowling Supply got on the board first,
winning game #1 859-838.

Hall of Famer Ted Hoffman Dies
DUBLIN, CA — Professional Bowlers Association
Hall of Famer Ted Hoffman Jr., who served the
PBA in a number of capacities for more than 50 years,
died Monday following a
lengthy illness. He was 76.
The son of a bowling
proprietor, Hoffman was
a star bowler in suburban
Philadelphia in his teens.
In 1964 he was selected as
Pennsylvania “Bowler-ofthe-Year” by the Philadelphia Sportswriters Association and was a winner of
the famed Newsday Long
Island Open Tournament. It
was then that he decided to
test the waters of the PBA
National Tour where he
qualified for the match play
finals in his first national
PBA tournament.
During a competition career that included more than
100 PBA Tour events (including four second place
finishes and two regional
titles), Hoffman managed a
group of players sponsored
by Smallcomb Enterprises,
and his organizational and
leadership skills led to his
election to the PBA Executive Board and Investment
Advisory Committee. He
also served a brief tenure
as PBA’s Assistant Tournament Director.
In 1968, Hoffman organized the PBA West Region
and served as the West Region’s Director until 2000.
In 1984, he and the late
Hall of Famer Earl Anthony purchased the bowling
center in Dublin that bears
Anthony’s name. Over the
ensuing years, Earl Anthony’s Dublin Bowl has
hosted numerous national
and regional tournaments
including the Earl Anthony
Memorial PBA Regional
tournament which Hoffman
ran as a tribute to his late
partner beginning in 2002.

consecutive titles with fellow Hall of Famer Tom
Baker who achieved the
feat in 2006.
“It ranks way up there
as far as my career accomplishments,” said Weber,
who has won a record five
U.S. Open titles on the
PBA Tour. “I think this is
the best I’ve ever felt or
thrown the ball for five
consecutive weeks in my
whole career.”

JONESBORO, Ark. — Tommy Jones of Simpsonville,
S.C., a future Professional Bowlers Association hall of
famer, used a tip from his roommate and an “old school”
technique to win the Downums Waste Services PBA Jonesboro Open presented by Xtra Frame Sunday at Jonesboro
Bowling Center.
Jones, 37, defeated top qualifier Kyle Troup of Taylorsville, N.C., 237-228, to win his 17th PBA Tour title – tying
PBA Hall of Famer Carmen Salvino for 20th place on the
all-time PBA Tour titles list. Jones also won a $15,000 first
prize.
After qualifying fourth for the four-man stepladder finals, Jones eliminated Connor Pickford of Charlotte, N.C.,
in the opening match, 212-163, and Frankie Lavoie of
Wichita, Kan., in the semifinal, 247-213, before winning a
“carry contest” over Troup in the title match. While Troup
pounded the pocket, he couldn’t put back-to-back strikes
together until the final four frames.
Jones, using a less-reactive urethane bowling ball and a
hard, straight-to-the-pocket delivery, doubled in the third
and fourth frames, and then put together a late string of
four strikes – including his first shot in the 10th – to hold
off Troup.
The deciding factor was the use the urethane ball to
manage the demanding lane condition, a suggestion he got
from roommate DJ Archer of Friendswood, Texas.
“I wouldn’t have even tried the urethane ball if DJ
hadn’t suggested it,” Jones said. “I was just looking for
something that would work on these lanes. I just didn’t
have good ball reaction doing anything else. I bowled 240
against Frankie and I got some pretty fortunate hits in that
match. Then I figured urethane is what got me to the title
match so I was going to ride it.”
The Downums Waste Services PBA Jonesboro Open
was the third of 10 Xtra Frame PBA Tour events scheduled
for 2016. The overall competition points winner for the
exclusive Xtra Frame Tour will earn a $10,000 bonus. The
next event in the series will be the Xtra Frame PBA Lubbock Sports Open from South Plains Lanes in Lubbock,
Texas, June 25-26, where a $20,000 first prize and a PBA
Tour title will be at stake.

Weber, Scroggins, Baker and Carter Receive 2015
PBA50 Awards at Suncoast Senior U.S. Open
LAS VEGAS — 2015 PBA50 award winners Pete Weber, Mike Scroggins, Tom Baker and Tom Carter received their awards during a special presentation seen on Xtra Frame
Thursday at the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by 900 Global.
Thanks in part to his win in the 2015 Suncoast Senior U.S. Open, along with a runnerup finish in the USBC Senior Masters, Pete Weber dominated the PBA50 earnings, average and competition points standings to earn the 2015 PBA50 Player of the Year crown,
the first PBA Player of the Year honor of his illustrious career.
Weber’s Senior U.S. Open title win was the fourth PBA50 title of his career and his
second major to go along with his USBC Senior Masters in 2013. With his Senior U.S.
Open win he joined fellow Hall of Famer and 2014 Senior U.S. Open winner Norm Duke
as the only players to win U.S. Open titles on both the PBA Tour and PBA50 Tour. During
the 2015 season, Weber also finished second in the Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open
and Johnny Petraglia BVL Open, and third in the PBA50 Miller High Life Classic. His
seventh-place finish in the season-ending DeHayes Insurance Group Championship gave
him enough competition points to secure PBA50 Player of the Year.
Second on the season points list was Mike Scroggins, which earned him PBA50
Rookie of the Year honors. Scroggins was the season’s only three-time winner, winning
the DeHayes Insurance Group Championship, Johnny Petraglia BVL Open and UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl In The Villages.
Another player who had a hallmark season was Hall of Famer and four-time PBA50
Player of the Year Tom Baker of King, N.C., who earned his first PBA60 Player of the
Year award for players 60 and over. Baker had five top-10 finishes including a third-place
finish in the UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl in The Villages and a fourth in the Miller High
Life Classic. PBA50 Tour veteran Tom Carter was the Dick Weber Sportsmanship award
recipient which was voted on by his fellow PBA50 Tour players.
Memorial Day Bowling Advice From Our Vets

On one of the most somber days of the year, it was not easy to bowl with so many of
our fallen Veterans on our minds. Given the fact there is not a single military base anywhere which does not have a bowling alley within its infrastructure, many great bowlers
were born from their military service. In particular, Hank Schrieffer, who gave me the
best bowling advice I’ve ever been given by a 95 year-old Veteran, “Take it from me,
I’m 92 years-old and have been around a long time, if you keep doing it that way, you’re
never going to get it”. I spent an entire week watching Hank, and I even set about trying
to bowl left handed cranker style, but being a right handed power stroker who believes
the arm is something to be preserved, maybe I’ll never figure it out. Hank had a smile
that lit up the bowling alley and it was a contagious smile that made everyone around feel
good. Ironically, it was the day of his funeral that I happened to clinch the Mens’ 9-pin
No Tap Championship in Upland. I arrived at Hank’s funeral as a Navy color guard and
played taps.
My beloved Grandmother, the wife of a Navy Veteran, and member of the “Greatest
Generation”, was not only a registered nurse and perhaps my first dedicated bowling
coach. Both are inherently good to have on hand when you bowl. I continue to share her
advice with others, and in a way I keep her memory alive while helping others reinvent
their game. She told me, “Aim with your thumb”. Bowling is as simple as pointing your
thumb where you want the ball to go.
Although my USBC book average is 157, the day before Memorial Day, I brought a
camera with me to the bowling alley to record a video documenting my perfect game.
Although I did not achieve perfection, I did achieve an all-time personal best 11 strikes in
a row. It did not matter that they weren’t in the same game, the camera not only recorded
the milestone, it also revealed that Hank Schrieffer was a man of integrity. When it comes
to control and balance, clearly, I still haven’t figured it out.
The Enforcer’s Bowling Team is comprised of a pair of retired Veterans, retired Deputy Nick Tippings and Special Agent Joe, a.k.a. “Mr. T”. You could set your watch by the
time they show up every morning to bowl. “Find the best advice that works for you, and
forget the rest”. The reality is that the best bowling advice doesn’t mean a thing unless it
makes you a better bowler.
Finally, USBC Gold Certified bowling coach, himself also a Veteran, William “Bill”
White practically taught me everything I know about bowling, and had the patience to
see me through some of the worst games I’ve ever bowled. I believe he gave me the best
bowling advice anyone has ever given me when he made it abundantly clear above all
else, removing the word “Can’t” from my vocabulary was imperative. Then years later
one hot August afternoon he uttered aloud, “For once, I really wish you would just listen
to me”. I did, and thank you Bill from the bottom of my heart, my USBC average is proof
you’re the greatest coach I’ve ever had, and I love you for it.
Speaking of love, there is still far too little of it in the world. Bowling is a game that I
continue to love more and more each time I play because no other form of recreation is as
honest and rewarding; moreover, the adventure of continuously improving performance
is a battle that must be fought time and time again while dividing and conquering along
the way. While it is easy to forget those who sacrificed themselves for our freedom, I am
grateful for the freedom to bowl and appreciate the privilege of having bowled with so
many wonderful people, but I salute all of our Veterans and want you to know, I don’t take
the freedom or the check written for it with your blood for granted, and I never will.

fight and put up a huge 1000 scratch game in the 2nd to win by almost 100 pins, forcing
a third and deciding game. In that 1000 game, Ray Minter was a 5 pin away from perfection, shooting 299. Buddy Lucas added 259 and Bobby Campagnale helped with 247.
The third game saw Cook’s Bowling Supply lead by quite a bit early, only to see Don Julio
come charging back at the end. Don Julio continued the charge in the 10th frame, adding
nine more strikes to close out, but Cook’s was up to the challenge. Matt Schermerhorn
and Jonathan Huff both struck out to fight off the rally. Consensus had it that one more
frame may have been enough to complete the rally, but Don Julio simply ran out of time
and lost a heartbreaker, 973 to 948. Schermerhorn finished his set with 278 (748 series).
Jonathan Huff added 244. Ray Minter stayed hot in the defeat, finishing with 259 (762
series). Buddy Lucas and Bobby Campagnale were both over 240 in the loss.
With the win, Cook’s Bowling Supply advanced to the semi-final match, which started
right afterwards. As for Don Julio Tequila, they win $7000 for their 4th place finish.
The semi-final match drew the 4th round pattern, which replicated the USBC team
event from El Paso last year. Cook’s Bowling Supply would now take on DV8.
Scores were significantly lower now, as the pattern plays very tough. DV8 actually set
the pace, with four strikes in the first frame to jump out to an early lead. A three bagger
by Ashkan Tahvildaran help DV8 open a little bit of a lead after seven frames. Neither
team ever made a strong run to open that lead, or close the gap. Cook’s would need a
strong 10th frame or opens from DV8 to steal game one, and neither came. DV8 took
the opener, 719-680.
Game two was broken into two halves. DV8 controlling the first half and opening a
big lead through five frames with a chance to lock out the match, needing only one more
win. Tahvildaran threw the front four, and Jeff Carr had 3 out of 4 to open the early lead.
In the back half of the game, Cook’s came storming back. Mikey Villarreal threw six of
the last seven to finish at 202. Brain Main added a three bagger. Schermerhorn threw the
final four. Not only did Cook’s come back, they did it convincingly enough to win by 44
and extend the match to a third game with momentum on their side.
Third game was a struggle for both teams and essentially came down to spares and
count. Dave Kovach was the leader for DV8 in this one with a 198 and staying clean
through the late frames. Ashkan Tahvildaran had a key late double to push DV8 in front.
Matt Schermerhorn kept Cook’s alive by striking out in the 10th frame again. This one
came down to the final bowlers of the night, with Mikey Villarreal needing one more
mark than Sam Hitchcock in the 10th, if Cook’s was going to stay alive. Sam got a six
count on his first ball, and with Mikey getting a spare, Sam had to convert. He did, meaning he only needed to keep it on the lane and stay behind the foul line on his fill ball. He
did that too, winning the game for DV8, 697-688, and advancing them to the championship match.
In defeat, Cook’s Bowling Supply finishes in 3rd place. They took home $8000 for
their efforts. Waiting for DV8 is the Professional Approach, who won the first round of
the season and never looked back as they locked up the top seed with a couple of weeks
to go in the season. Billy Myers Jr., Art Jones, Ramiro Garcia and Sonny Dew have been
waiting for the championship, and now have their opponents set.
Championship match is going to take place next Monday night. It’ll be a best of five
match with all four of the patterns in play.

Derick for the title!
The final match started
with both bowlers striking in the first frame. JoJo
opened the 2nd and 3rd.
Derick also opened the 2nd
but spared the next two
frames. Derick opened in
the 5th, 6th & 7th to give
JoJo a chance since there’s
only three pins difference
in handicap. JoJo marked
from 4th frame and a strike
in the 9th. Derick found his
stride, answered JoJo with
a strike in the 9th, double in
the 10th and an 8 count for
his last ball. It was a pressure 10th frame for JoJo
but he came thru the challenge and struck all the way
with a 191 scratch game to
Derick’s 171 game. JoJo’s
third championship came
with a big pay off, $6,850
with qualifying bonuses.
Derick took home $1,625.

Chris Preble Wins Inaugural Melton Memorial Shootout
Johnnie Englehart has blasted 67 800 series and 63 perfect
games. He’s certainly prouder of those scores than his one or
two “Dutch 200s.”
So How’s an Elite Bowler
Feel About a ‘Dutch 200?’

WINNETKA – A few weeks ago, Johnnie Englehart
tacked on another honor score to his ever-expanding ledger.
The smooth, right-handed marksman bombed an 824
series (268, 289, 267) in the River Maniacs league at Winnetka Bowl.
That made it 67 800 series to go along with his 63 perfect games – or a whopping130 honor scores altogether. .
But Englehart was terse as to why his one or two “Dutch
200s” rank way, way down there as far as personal highlights.
That was in response to a recent California Bowling
News story that questioned the relative ho-hum reaction of
elite bowlers to scoring a “Dutch 200,” – or a 200 achieved
by alternating strikes and spares throughout the game.
Englehart, in an email, explained that it was tough
for him to get excited about a “Dutch 200” because “you
screwed up on the other five frames!”
Englehart makes a good point – at least for elite bowlers, of which he is one. Actually, he makes two good
points.
The first: “The object of the game is to strike every
frame,” he said. And he added: “If I can’t figure out a lane
within three or four shots, then maybe I want to rethink
what I’m doing.”
He can say that because his average has been as high as
the 240s in the past couple of years. That comes out to an
average well over a 700 series.
And that leads to his second point: If he cops his “Dutch
200,” then he bowled a game “below par for me” – meaning he just bowled 30 or 40 pins below his average. And
if Englehart was bowling in a handicap league, his teammates certainly wouldn’t be thrilled with that kind of score
– though they might toast the novelty of a “Dutchman.”
Naturally, the ultimate goal for bowlers such as Englehart and other top-of-the-liners such as Bryan Alpert,
Tim Tripp and Charles Kenny is a strike-filled 900. The
300-300-300 series has never been rolled by an L.A.-area
bowler and several local bowlers certainly are capable of
it. Englehart, for instance, has twice bunched two perfect
games in his three-game series.
The symmetry of a 900 seemed light years more appealing for Englehart than collecting another head-shaking
“Dutchman.”
“For someone who doesn’t really crank the ball like a
Charles Kenny, that would be awesome,” said Englehart
about rolling a possible 900. “I would be head over heels
for a month.”

Fresno, CA—Fresno State Bulldog Bowling Coach Chris Preble continued his streak of wins by capturing yet
another title winning the Melton Memorial Shootout that was held the weekend of May 14-15 at AMF Sierra Lanes.
Preble, who has been on a serious roll this season, won the Central Valley Masters title in Hanford, then the 6-Gamer
in Modesto. This is incredible considering he just finished up his 14th season coaching for the Fresno State Bulldog
Bowling Team (the first 6 seasons, he was an assistant coach under the late Glenn Carlson, the founder of the program).
When Carlson passed in January, 2008, Preble took on the head coaching position and has since held that position. Chris
qualified number four in Squad 2 averaging 244. He then went on to be number one seed after the Semi-Finals rolling a
300 game which bumped his average up to 250 going into the Finals. He then went on to defeat Kiel Jordan, then Mark
DelCerro and finally Erick Buckley on his road to his title. Chris hopes to compete in some of the western region PBA
events this summer. He is thankful his health has been good, but enjoys dividing his time between his two daughters and
coaching at Fresno University. For this tournament, Chris used the Brunswick Ultimate Nirvana and Danger Zone balls
and said he was very impressed with both of them and said, “The new releases for Brunswick are as good as I’ve seen in
my time on staff with them and they deserve a lot of the credit for the solid run I’ve been on this season.”
When asked about the Bulldog Bowling Team, Chris said he hopes to keep the program a viable entity going forward.
He’s proud to say the Bulldogs were able to win the Nationals Championship in 2011! However, he said he seen a lot
of changes in the 14 years he has been involved. He said about ten years ago, smaller NAIA universities began using
bowling as a tool to recruit student athletes to their universities. But this, and the steady decline of youth bowling in
California, has combined to lower (both number and talent level) of student athletes being attracted to Fresno State. Add
to that Fresno is not able to provide scholarships for potential recruits. This is just some of the challenges he faces. With
that, in August, the Fresno Bulldog Bowling Team will be having their inaugural Fresno State Bowling Golf Fundraiser
on Mon., August 15 at Fort Washington Golf Course in Fresno. They have a Facebook page promoting it, so if you are
interested in helping out the Fresno State Bowling Team, please check it out or contact Chris or Kevin Kwok for more
information. Special thanks to the Fresno Bulldog Bowling Team who helped run this tournament and the brackets!
Chris said he knew the late Pete Melton well. “He was a staple at the bowling center I grew up in—Sunnyside Bowl.”
Which, coincidentally, is where Chris ran the junior bowling program back in 1988 for a year. Chris added, “Pete was
also very involved with the local association volunteering many, many hours to support our game.”
So thanks to the efforts of both Jason Tehee and Mark Dinubilo of the Melton Memorial Tournament Committee for
their groundwork and ideas hatched back in 2014 for the potential for a Masters event to be hosted in Central California.
Jason was wondering why there was no scratch tournament held in this area and got with Mark to see about coordinating
with the local association to see if they would work with them to develop one and Mark ended up presenting a recommendation to the Central California USBC board of directors and they approved to host a masters event. Mark then went
out to recruit some very committed people to serve on the tournament committee and they started meeting to bring this
event to a reality. The Melton Memorial Committee members are George Lewis, Mark Dinubilo, Jason Tehee, Kevin
Kwok, Craig Donaldson and Chris Preble. “With the passing of Pete Melton, it was unanimous with our Board that we
honor him for his dedication and support of the sport in our area by naming this event after him,” said Mark.
And what a tribute to a man who meant so much to so many bowlers in the Fresno area! Jason reflected that he
remembered Pete always handled the lane certification job for all the centers and he was a lifetime member of their association. Melton, who also was in the construction business as a backhoe operator, was even involved with the building
of a couple of the bowls—Rodeo and Cedar!
The event drew 81 entrants (45 for Squad 1 and 36 for Squad 2). A total of seven 300’s were shot. Robby Britton
shot the first 300 of the day in Game 1 of Squad 1 followed by Kiel Jordan rolling one for Game 4 of Squad 1. Jordan
ended up top seed of Squad 1 averaging 254 and earned an additional $500 for leading that squad. For Squad 2, top seed
Austin Kircher rolled the first 300 for his Game 1 followed by both Zarcoff Boutell and Danielle Daughtery in Game 2
followed by Dan Long in Game 3. The sixth 300 was bowled by Champion Chris Preble in the semi-finals.
Mark said for the Finals they had about 50 spectators watching live at the bowl and they also provided a live Facebook feed which had about 35-40 viewers online. He also added, “One unique element we utilized for this event was a
‘Match Frame Scoring’ format for the final eight qualifiers. It provided for an exciting final round.”
An event is only as successful as those who come together to make it happen and Mark said each of the Melton Memorial Committee members “truly put their heart and soul into this event but special thanks goes to Kevin Kwok whose
dedication and commitment insured a flawlessly executed event that was well received by all who participated.”

Here’s a Bowling Terminology Quiz

To enrich one’s bowling experience, it’s often helpful to
know the jargon that other players toss around.
For instance, if a player’s first shot leaves the 3-4-6-7-9,
one often will hear a remark that the bowler will now have
to deal with “grandma’s teeth.” And those in the know will
chuckle along with the quipster.
So what is “grandma’s teeth,” and what are some of the
often-used bowling terms and their meaning?
To answer those questions: the very first Bowling Terminology Quiz.
But first, here’s some bowling humor to get you in the
mood of taking this quiz:
“When bowling, remember you don’t have to join the
union to be striking.”
Now that you’re ready (hopefully!), here goes the very
first Bowling Terminology Quiz:
1 – What is “Grandma’s teeth?”
a) A random group of pins that is left standing from one
end of the lane to the other.
b) A split that occurs after a slow-moving and lightweight
ball enters the “mouth” of the pins.
c) A straight-on shot typically rolled by a senior bowler
with little “bite” to it.
2 – What is a “clean game?”
a) A game in which a player finishes without an open
frame.
b) A game in which a team “throws in the towel” and concedes when it falls too far behind its opponent.
c) A game in which a player shoots 10 open frames.
3 – What is a “field goal?”

player is usually the best bowler and the most clutch performer.

from winning.

“Dutch 200”: There’s More to the Story

So you thought everything about a “Dutch 200” was covered in last week’s California Bowling News?
Not even close.
As a reminder, a “Dutch 200” is a wonderfully freakish
occurrence in which a bowler alternates strikes and spares
en route to a 200 game.
Perhaps you’ve wondered whether a player has ever rolled
such a novelty in back-to-back games.
The answer, according to the United States Bowling Congress’ unofficial records for oddities, is a resounding yes.
In fact, it’s been done four times, the latest by Mark Palmer of Jackson, Wis., in 1997.
That’s not all the records the USBC keeps on “Dutch
200s.”
The USBC also cites three people who have rolled a
“Dutch 200” three times in a season. Thomas Lund of
Peshtigo, Wis., was the last to add his name to the “Dutch
200” record book by rolling it three times in the 2000-01
season.
It’s uncertain about how the seven bowlers feel about being “Dutch 200” record holders.
But give them plenty of credit for being adept at racking
up strikes and knocking down spares.
No doubt they have a few honors scores on their resumes
as well.

In the opening match, Sullins defeated PBA Hall of
Famer Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, 212-207, to advance to the semifinal. Monacelli, who won the Senior
U.S. Open in 2012 and 2013, was trying to become the
tournament’s first three-time winner.
Weber joined Monacelli, Baker and Wayne Webb as a
two-time Senior U.S. Open winner, all of whom have won
in successive years. Baker won his back to back in 2005
and 2006, and Webb in 2008 and 2009.
Weber will try to make it five in a row when the PBA50
Tour heads to Fountain Valley, Calif. for the PBA50 Fountain Valley Open presented by Track June 5-8. The sixth

Competes in Her 37th California
State Women’s
Championships

LAKE FOREST — Citrus Belt Hall of Famer Lee
Fitzgerald participated in her 37th state women’s tournament last week. I believe Lee has participated in more
state women’s tournaments than any other Citrus Belt
woman.
According to the California USBC website, two women have bowled in their 55th or greater state women’s
tournament this year. FAITH DOUTHITT participated
in her sixty-fifth state women’s tournament and FRAN
GRISWOLD in her fifty-fifth. Congratulations ladies and
watch out, Lee Fitzgerald is gaining on you.
Lee’s immediate goal is to reach forty state woman’s
tournaments in the next three years and then maybe get to
fifty state tournaments before she stops bowling.
Lee has a 170 book average and is a tough competitor
on the lanes. This past weekend she led her team to second
place in the standings at this season’s ongoing state women’s tournament. Besides being a competitive tournament
bowler she has been involved in every aspect of bowling.
She has been an Association Manager, league coordinator, youth coordinator, league secretary, and coach. Lee
knows bowling.
The Citrus Belt is fortunate to have Lee as one of us.
We appreciate all that she does and wish to congratulate
her on reaching this milestone.

BURBANK — I treasure my bowling days and protect
them fiercely. I bowl 3 times a week and in earlier years,
I bowled more often than that. Sometimes twice in one
day! It was well known at my house to leave Mom alone
on bowling days. My boys knew that if they were to call me
during bowling, there had best be blood or unconsciousness involved! Even now, as grown men, they hesitate to
call when I’m bowling. This may sound like the demands
of a passionate bowler or, worse yet, an uncaring mother
but it was what it was.
Nowadays bowlers all around me, when setting up their
equipment, will make sure their cell phone is within reach.
Right next to their Easy Slide, Rosin bag or roll of tape. It
seems to be there, not only for phone calls, but also for
sharing the latest viral video and pics of their grandkids,
their gardens and who knows what! Oh, believe me, I appreciate my cell phone…a lot! But I do miss the days of
interacting with my fellow bowlers without visual aids.

What the Hell-O?

LAKEWOOD — A few weeks ago I wrote an article
about the strange happenings at Cal Bowl concerning the
lane machine. Remember the lane machine wiping all the
pins off 54 pin decks and leaving a single pin on lane 15?
Two weeks later, after the routine morning running of
the same lane machine over the same 54 lanes the mechanic discovered a pin laying on top of the machine.
His first thought was “where did THAT come from?”
So he started counting pins in each pit. We waited for his
findings. He finally emerged from the back-end with a
bewildered look. Indeed, the pin belonged in lane 15!
