A Doggone Good Time – Pet Visitation at Mennonite Home George and Jan Parola are often seen parading through the halls of Mennonite Home with one, or more recently two, of their beloved Leonberger dogs, Cherokee and Brooklyn, in tow. They visit with residents as part of Mennonite Home’s Volunteer Pet Therapy program. People want to pet the dogs and they have questions: what breed are they, how much do they weigh, how much do they eat? what breed are they, how much do they weigh, how much do they eat? Winter 2015 | 3 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Peggy Hanzelman Shining Her Light Brightly Whether you are at Mennonite Home or Woodcrest Villa, there’s a good chance you may meet Peggy Hanzelman assisting in one of her volunteer roles or engaging with friends near her home at Woodcrest Villa (WCV). You may even see her nearby as she is always on the go and also volunteers in the community. Now that she has “retired,” she is doing what she loves most, volunteering. As soon as she moved in, she started volunteering once a week at the welcome desk at the Lancaster General Health Suburban Outpatient Pavilion. She got involved in several committees at WCV, even taking the role of Volunteer Manager of the grocery store, “The Marketplace.” In that position, she organizes volunteers and keeps things running smoothly. She also helps out as a volunteer clerk at the Country Store at Mennonite Home. But the one volunteer position she loves most is assisting Mennonite Home Alzheimer’s residents on Good’s Run with dining. For many years, she has studied the effects that Dementia and Alzheimer’s has on people and she feels such a strong calling to help those around her who are suffering from this terrible illness. She attended West Chester University and met her husband, Roger. After college she loved teaching music to elementary students. When she was expecting her first son, she left her teaching position and felt privileged to be able stay at home and raise her children. She has two sons, David & Steven, and three grandsons. Over the years, Peggy has enjoyed working in various jobs, but all were 4 | Winter 2015 somehow related to health. Her roles have included providing hands-on care, supervisor and volunteer coordinator—a job she particularly always enjoyed. Her husband passed away suddenly at an early age and Peggy decided that she needed to work full time. She became the Volunteer Coordinator and Event Planner for independent residents at a Moravian facility in from Bethlehem to Lancaster County so that she could be more involved in the lives of her three grandsons. Lo and behold, she agreed and she and her beloved dachshund Arney moved into WCV and have loved it from the beginning. Every day you will see her taking Arney for walks around the campus. Since moving to WCV she has made a lot of friends. When some of them talk about an outing, she along with others, make the contacts to make it happen. “Just recently we enjoyed High Tea at the local Tech school,” she shared. Today her grandson Evan works in dining services at WCV and her second grandson Gavin will soon be joining him. Her third grandson Owen is only 14 and has a few more years before he will be able to work. Since they attend the Hempfield School District, Peggy has been thrilled to be a part of their lives watching them play in the band, soccer and volleyball games. Nazareth. She had more than 300 volunteers and once again started the process of learning new names and making new friends. She was also responsible to assist with their weekly newsletter providing information on activities and volunteers. She felt that the best part of that job was watching her student volunteers grow and mature. Peggy worked there for almost nine years until she decided it was time to retire. But after working so many years in nursing homes and retirement communities, she decided that she would “never live in one.” Three years ago, her son David came to her and suggested that she move Peggy so touched the lives of her residents and volunteers at her former job at the Moravian Home in Nazareth that they wanted to come see her at Woodcrest Villa. They hired a bus, came to WCV and joined Peggy for a special lunch. “It was so wonderful to see everyone again and catch up on their lives,” she said. Peggy is truly one of God’s special people. She lets her light shine brightly around all those she comes in contact with. Her smile is contagious, and her generosity towards others is unending. We are so blessed to have her as a volunteer a resident and a friend at Woodcrest Villa. Around Mennonite Home Communities News & Updates Cathy McBride – Personal Care Admissions Counselor Welcome to Cathy McBride, Personal Care Admissions Counselor at Mennonite Home. Cathy joined our team in October and says she “loves being part of a team that will help seniors find a safe, comfortable home.” Previously, Cathy worked as a Spanish teacher, coach and admissions counselor in private schools and also at Manheim Township as a paraeducator and a lacrosse coach. She is a graduate of both Manheim Township High School and Franklin and Marshall College. She is looking forward to getting to know lots of new people and helping them transition into their new homes in personal care. Cathy is married and she and her husband Kevin have two daughters, Emily and Lizzie. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, exercising and reading. If you have any questions about Personal Care at Mennonite Home, please give Cathy a call at 717-390-7979. She would love to help you! Josh Bashore-Steury – Director of Personal Care Josh Bashore-Steury may be a familiar face to residents of Woodcrest Villa and Mennonite Home. In March 2011, he began his career at Mennonite Home Communities as a Community Life Coordinator on Lititz Run, before transitioning to being a Personal Care Social Worker and then also serving the Woodcrest Villa residents as Resident Services Coordinator. In October, Josh accepted the position of Director of Personal Care. In his new role, Josh says, “I am most looking forward to seeing the evolution of my relationships with the residents, residents’ families, and Personal Care staff at Mennonite Home. I have had the privilege of working with these wonderful people over the last four and a half years, and I am excited for the opportunity to continue those relationships.” Josh has his Bachelors of Arts degree in Social Work and Certificate in Gerontology from Wright State University and his Masters of Social Work from Millersville University. “I have a passion for serving others, and specifically, the older adult population,” Josh shares. “The residents at Mennonite Home Communities have taught me so much in my experience with them over the last four and a half years. I feel that serving in the capacity of Director of Personal Care allows me to continue my service to them while doing so in a greater capacity.” Josh and his wife Stacy recently welcomed their first child into their family—Olivia who was born in September. In his spare time, Josh enjoys spending time with his family, friends and two cats (Ella and Kandi) as well as spending time outdoors by running, hiking, bicycling and gardening. Winter 2015 | 5 HOME FOR LIFE: 2015 Annual Report 2015 Board Chairperson Message Dear Friends of Mennonite Home Communities, Mennonite Home Communities continues to be a center of activity and expansion. A few days ago I was perusing several boxes of old pictures and happened upon a picture taken from Mennonite Home toward the Woodcrest Villa campus. It is sometimes hard to imagine the changes that have taken place in and around Mennonite Home. My first observation was the small two-lane Harrisburg Pike road that flowed ever so gently toward Landisville. What a change that road has taken over the last 20+ years! Since those early years in the 90’s we have witnessed tremendous growth on both the Mennonite Home and Woodcrest campuses. of them have been occupied. This development completes the northeast geographic corner of our community. Future expansions planned for 2016 include 22 additional villas located near Harrisburg Pike. We continue to experience strong demand for the villa product. VIVA Centre, the new Woodcrest wellness and cultural center, will open soon. We are excited to provide our residents with this venue of expanded facilities for wellness, large meeting spaces and new dining options. This project has also offered the opportunity to change the orientation of our Welcome Center. Sincere thanks to the dedicated employees, volunteers, donors and board members who collectively fulfill our mission of caring for our residents. Sincerely, This year completed the construction of Romarin Place, 32 villa homes. We as a board have been blessed by the hundreds of volunteers who supply critical services to our residents. Our volunteers provide more than 22,500 hours of service and develop relationships with our residents that enrich their lives. Our vendors and residents strongly supported our 20th Golf Outing, which raised over $66,000 for the Benevolent Care Fund. In addition, Woodcrest Villa residents funded $1,200 scholarships to 24 dining service employees. The Woodcrest Villa-initiated Christmas in July Celebration provided school supplies for homeless children in the Hempfield and Lancaster City School districts. Winter 2015-2016 will mark the completion of the long awaited VIVA Centre on the Woodcrest campus. This fitness and cultural center features a new pool and locker rooms, fitness facilities, auditorium/banquet center, staff offices, beauty salon, bistro, creative arts room, library, games and much more. VIVA Centre provides something for every interest. God has again blessed MHC in 2015! God asks us in Romans 12:12-13 to “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice Hospitality.” Thank you to our residents, staff and donors for your generous support in helping the Board deliver a ”Home for Life” for each resident. Many Ways to Help Dear Friends, For over 110 years Mennonite Home Communities has consistently fulfilled our mission of providing a “Home for Life” to all our residents through our benevolent care fund. Delivering on this mission has required the combined efforts of wise leadership, good management, diligent staff, faithful volunteers and generous donors. We continue to celebrate the generosity of John and Lydia Landis, who gifted most of the land where both the Mennonite Home and Woodcrest Villa are located. Their trust continues to support the Benevolent Care Fund for our community. This tradition of generosity continues through our Annual Campaign and contributions given through the Extraordinary Give. We have many sponsors and volunteers who give of their time and finances on a regular basis. Bequests are also a wonderful way to share with others through estate planning. The benevolent care fund is critical to providing a home for life for all residents. I, along with the Board and Staff, want to thank you for your generous support of the Benevolent Care provided by the Mennonite Home Communities. With Sincere Thanks, Roy Bomberger Jr. Chairperson, Development Committee The Board of MHC asks for your continued prayers for wisdom and your support as we move forward with some staff transitions anticipated in 2016. With Sincere Thanks, Patricia Y. Leaman Board Chairperson Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy in reporting our donors. Please inform Kim Peters, MHC Development Department, at 717-390-4105, of any corrections, omissions or errors. Create a lasting legacy by supporting Mennonite Home through your estate and your will. Call Greg Pierce at 717-390-4903 to learn more. Winter 2015 | 7 HOME FOR LIFE: Benevolent Care Donors The essential mission of Mennonite Home Communities is to provide high-quality, loving care for our residents, regardless of their financial limitations. We use the phrases Benevolent Care and Benevolent Care Fund to describe the gift of uncompensated care and the fund that supports this care. The Benevolent Care Fund assures residents of the same high level of care, with complete confidentiality to protect their dignity. They have been watching and following its progress over the last year and have been impressed and amazed with the newest addition to the heart of the community. Residents were invited to keep tabs on the construction through general information sessions and a photo library shared on Channel 66. According to Nan Rush, Vice President of Residential Living, doors will open in early January 2016 with staff moving into and relocating offices in the first few weeks. “VIVA Centre excitement is growing and we have a plan to help everyone become comfortable in this beautiful and functional space,” she shares. Resident guides will help others learn their way around the Centre. Programs at the pool and exercise areas plan to begin later in the month. New residents Eric and Jackie Sandblade are counting down the days until the Centre opens. “The new pool in the VIVA Centre was a major factor in our decision to move to Woodcrest Villa,” says Jackie. “We plan to use the workout rooms and the pool daily. The center will encourage us to continue to be physically and mentally active.” They see the opening of the Centre as a wonderful Christmas gift for everyone in the community. The Snowball Gala will be the first major event to be held at the Centre for WCV residents in February. Reverend Bob and Joan Nicholson moved into a comfortable villa in April of 2005 and were amazed at how busy their lives immediately became! As they invested their time and energy in supporting the life of their new community, they found themselves beginning an exciting new chapter. Bob’s career included his dual passions as a United Methodist Pastor and also a high school math teacher. Joan had a very hectic career heading the advertising department in a local weekly newspaper. Together they raised three children and their family has grown to seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Earlier in their “retirement,” both Bob and Joan had worked for a fund raising consultancy guiding more than 30 campaigns for churches and faith-based non-profit organizations. They found the work of a Christian steward satisfying, but the travel was daunting! At Woodcrest Villa (WCV), one of their first decisions was to eat regularly in the Hummingbird Dining Room so they could meet more of their fellow residents. Joan is a fine cook, but they realized this was a better way to make more connections with a broader base of people. They also began to develop deep relationships with the young servers. dedicated people, all experts in their various fields, who work together closely for the good of all residents. When the MarketPlace started seven years ago, Joan was naturally motivated to volunteer so that she could meet and serve even more people. She organized the delivery program to help those neighbors with mobility challenges. While she helped in that capacity, she had great fun talking on the phone with folks who needed groceries. At 88 years of age, Bob feels his best contribution to WCV is simply supporting his very active wife and her involvement in everything! He is also a wise steward who appreciates the benefits of a Charitable Gift Annuity and actively promotes the tax advantages of the IRA rollover gift or Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). Bob claims, “Tithing via the IRA QCD saves us nearly $2000 in taxes per year.” As they look back on their lives, Bob and Joan hope to be known and remembered as Christians, dedicated parents and active members of this community. They firmly believe that WCV is the best possible place to live and that everyone should support this mission. Thank you to Bob and Joan for being such caring and compassionate cheerleaders! To become more involved in the community, Joan ran for Residents’ Council and chaired the Dining Committee for six years. She also chaired Residents’ Council for three years. Joan now serves on the Development Advisory Committee and the WCV Employee Scholarship Committees. Bob is supportive of Joan’s involvement and says, “I love to see these fine young employees get money for their schooling!” With her unique background and stewardship philosophy, Joan provides a wise and insightful voice to the development programs. Five years ago, Joan received the great honor of serving on the Board of Mennonite Home Communities. As only the second resident to serve in that capacity, it is a responsibility she cherishes. Joan finds the Board to be comprised of intelligent and Winter 2015 | 15 Mennonite Home Communities 1520 Harrisburg Pike Lancaster, PA 17601 www.mennonitehome.org NONPROFIT ORG U.S. POSTAGE PAID LANCASTER, PA PERMIT NO. 229 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED “SOARING” is a quarterly publication of Mennonite Home Communities, 1520 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.
