We hope this will be a great experience for both you and your student. As with all great programs, there is a great deal of preparation and support required to make this a rewarding experience for all. This handbook describes The Riverdale High School Program and its policies, rules, and regulations. The High School Band Program includes students from the 9th through the 12th grade. Band members are required to follow the policies, rules and regulations of Riverdale High School and the Band Program. School rules and policies are in force at all times that a member is directly or indirectly involved in any activity sponsored by or in the name of Riverdale High School. School policy shall have priority in the event of any policy conflict. The Band Director shall have the authority to suspend or amend any band policy at any time deemed necessary in the best interest of the overall band program. We know each year many questions will arise. This handbook has been designed to help answer those. If you are unable to find the answer to your question, please contact any member of the Band Boosters or Mr. Golden, via email. Have a great and exciting year! 5 To Band Members What is the High School Band Experience? Unlike most other classes, band offers a wide of variety of opportunities for each student. Band is one of the few classes where excellence is not only expected, but also essential for success. Imagine if an English teacher graded everyone in the class to the level of the weakest student!! In Band, everyone MUST perform at the highest level of excellence or a performance will sound terrible. Even one person making a grade of 60% on a piece of music means 40% of the notes were played in error… not pleasant to hear! In addition to teaching performance skills, Band teaches the student to be an active, thinking person. For each note played, there are numerous considerations and instantaneous decisions to make. How loud or soft? How fast or slow? How does the note start? How does it end? Who else plays it? Am I in tune? Nowhere else on campus is the demand for active thought any stronger. Band also teaches life skills. Communication is the main component of music. The rehearsal and performance schedule of the Band demands planning and time management skills that will be valuable all through life. Goal setting, problem solving, and peer interaction develop quickly as a part of the band experience. The Band Program at Riverdale High School has established itself as one of the finest. Students here have had experiences that others can only dream. Few other activities offer the travel opportunities, the chance to meet and interact with legends in the field, and the satisfaction of knowing that your time, talent and effort have paid off through the highest levels of achievement. To the Parents Welcome to one of the most exciting organizations available to your student!! The Band Program at Riverdale High School offers many varied performance opportunities and gives members the chance to learn with each other and grow closer to one another. We strive to offer the best available instruction and the widest array of events for our members. We strongly believe that there is a place for everyone in the band. We have hundreds of success stories. Many times, members who thought they were not interested have become some of the most dedicated members once they have become part of the experience. If you choose to participate, you can reap a variety of rewards. In addition to all this, you become a member of a very active, multifaceted family. We hope that you share our excitement in creating the phenomenal opportunities for the students. We encourage parents to be active supporters of our effects through booster club participation (The Riverdale High School Band Boosters or the RHSBB), assistance in fundraising and through volunteer work such as chaperones, equipment crew, or as a parent leader. We also hope that you will be a visible supporter of the students by attending as many performances as possible. On behalf of the high school band director and staff of the Riverdale High School Music Department, we look forward to working together this year, Shannon Walter Golden Director of Bands, Riverdale High School 6 Welcome to the Riverdale High School Music Department Home of the Riverdale High School “Regiment” Band We are very excited that your family has chosen to participate with The Riverdale High School Band Program. Instrument Rentals and Insurance Students are expected to provide their own instruments, except for the larger or more exotic instruments such as percussion, tuba, baritones, bassoons, oboes, bass clarinets, etc. Students and parents are required to sign a liability form for the school instrument they have been assigned. Loss or damage of school property will be added to the student’s expense account. Parents, please make sure your homeowners insurance covers your student’s musical instrument. Unfortunately with a large number of students involved in this type of activity, accidents can and do happen. Carrying insurance on your student’s instrument may help if an accident occurs. 11 In regards to instrument rental, the Music Department deals exclusively with certain local dealers. If this is the route for you, please feel free to ask, email is preferred. These selected local vendors know the exact brand and model that is preferred for our students at Riverdale High School to use. They also have special rates to rent these instruments. In the event the Music Department has an available instrument for your child, you may choose to check out an instrument through the Music Department. You are responsible to keep the instrument safe and clean. All reeds, mouthpieces, cork grease, etc… are available for purchase in the Band Office. Students will be held responsible for any restitution of any damages to the instrument and will be assessed to the student’s expense account. There is a short supply of flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones and French horns in the Music Department. Please check with Mr. Golden early to insure the opportunity for your child to use a school instrument. Instruments, Mouthpieces and Accessories It is important for each student to play on a good instrument, so he or she can have the best opportunity for success. A good instrument is one that can be played in tune without reasonable effort and is capable of producing a good characteristic tone. Instruments that are not capable of the above requirements will only cause the student to become frustrated and discouraged, thus limiting the student’s progress on the instrument. Each student will need the proper mouthpiece for their instrument. Although there are many different types and kinds of mouthpieces for each instrument, each mouthpiece is specific for a certain sound and ability of the player. Here is a list of recommended instruments for the program and mouthpieces for your high school student. •

You will be outside for the most part of the camp and, as you know, the Florida sun will get to you in a hurry. Telephone: The camp telephone number is (239) 410-‐4319. Please do not call, unless it is an emergency. Another number, in case of emergency would be, Mrs. Jackie Lineberger, Band Booster President, Cell # (239)-‐850-‐1436. Dress: Band camp will not require any nice clothes. Shorts and t-‐shirts (with sleeves – please no strapless shirts for girls) will be ideal for the week. Socks and shoes must be worn at all times. NO SANDALS!! Hats or visors are recommended. Students may also use camelbacks, as long as they do not become an interference with the learning process. 24 Staff: A complete staff of qualified musicians and drill instructors have been contracted for band camp. They are experienced band personnel, who will assist in field and music instruction. Parent Chaperones: We require a minimum of 10 chaperones for the two weeks of band camp. They must be available to assist and supervise students when they are not practicing. Sunburn: Our biggest and most troublesome problem at band camp can be sunburn. Some students could even develop second-‐degree burns from being out in the sun with little to no protection. We would suggest a sunblock of SPF 15-‐30. Any lower number, you are at your own risk! 1)

If you burn easily, DEFINITELY use SPF 30 or higher. To prevent sunburned lips, use Blistex Daily Conditioning treatment with SPF 15. If your nose burns easily, use Zinc Oxide paste. Bring Solarcaine in case of mild sunburn. What Every Parent Needs to Know About Marching Band Show Shirts: During the marching season a special shirt is designed for the program. This is the show T-‐shirt that students wear under their uniforms and to performances. As part of their band fee, all students will receive one of these shirts. These T-‐shirts are also sold in adult sizes for parents and fans. They may be ordered on a pre-‐paid basis once during the season, at a booster meeting. The order form will be available in the band room and we will e-‐mail it to all families (another reason to make sure you have signed up for the email list!). This is a totally voluntary purchase. Most parents like to have them to wear to the contests. 25 Awards and Letters: Students receive a chevron each year they march. Students are given a patch to signify the band they performed with during the school year. Students may receive their letter for band in the end spring of their first year of marching band. As a sophomore and junior, each student receives a pin of their instrument and as a senior they will receive a senior award. Marching season awards are given out at the Awards Program in the fall. Awards for winter season bands, guard, and drumline, are given out at the annual Spring Awards in May. Financial Policy: Individual accounts are set up for each student. These accounts may be used by the student for band fees, instrument needs, uniform needs and any travel related expenses. The accounts are funded by payments into the account and/or money earned by the student by participating in fundraisers. During the year, opportunities are provided for the student to earn money for his/her account. Each student’s account is credited upon receipt for the total amount earned. Fund Raisers: Earning money to Offset Band Fees and Expenses You can raise money for all of your band expenses with our fundraising efforts. Various fundraisers are held during the year and may vary from year to year. Every effort is made to make all families aware of all fundraisers available. We have opportunities to work outside venues during the year. The student/parent may make $7.50 an hour, all of which is put into the students account. Please watch out for these opportunities to be sent out by email. Any money earned by fundraising will not be refunded to you in the event of your student leaves the program or graduates. It may be applied to a siblings account or another student’s account with written permission to the band office. UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTIFIED, ALL CHECKS ISSUED FOR PAYMENT OF FUNDRAISERS OR AS PAYMENTS ON AN ACCOUNT ARE PAYABLE TO THE RIVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS. 26 Concert Band Commitment There is a commitment of time and expense required to meet the objectives and expectations of the concert band. This includes rehearsals, after school ensemble rehearsals, performances and music festivals. All students must be in attendance for all rehearsals from the beginning of the school year to the completion of the concert band season. This is a year long performing ensemble. Solo & Ensemble Fees Solo & Ensemble Fees / All-‐County Auditions: Solo (per student) $6.00 per entry Ensemble (per student) $5.00 per student in ensemble There is a charge for the piano accompanist -‐ $100 per student for 5 – 30 minute rehearsal and 1 performance. This will take place during an arranged time between student and accompanist. All-‐State Auditions: Per student $20.00 upfront -‐ $10.00 returned after auditioning ***We ask for donations to help pay for the piano accompanist required for your student’s rehearsals, performance and success. This will help lower the cost.*** After School Ensemble Rehearsals If a student is going to miss ALL OR PART of a rehearsal, the student must bring a note from their parent; explaining the reason for their absence to the band office BEFORE the day they are absent. Students unaccounted for will receive a phone call to inquire as to their whereabouts. Vacation absences should be turned in as soon as dates are available. If your student is sick, please send a note with them when they return to school. Contest and State Festivals We will post a detailed schedule timeline for the upcoming contest, meal plans and directions the week before the event. The information will be posted on the Band Blackboard, website and will also be sent via email. We encourage your student to bring the information home so you will be aware of the specific times. Please make sure that you register for our email list. 27 Plan to attend as many functions as possible. This is a good way to meet other parents, get to know other students, and support the band for all their hard work. Look for other parents at the events. When driving to the contests, you can either follow the caravan or get directions from www.mapquest.com using the address provided on the contest schedule for that week. After the contest you are welcome to come celebrate with the students at the bus loading area. Bus Carry-‐Ons NO GLASS CONTAINERS!!! •

Bottled water Snacks, fruit, etc… Jacket or sweatshirt and pants for cool late nights Necessary band items and personal items Pillow and/or blanket NO COOLERS OR BAGS ALLOWED IN FRONT OF THE EMERGENCY DOORS OR IN THE AISLE OF THE BUS. Parent Releases – Picking Up a Student at the Festival Site Occasionally parents may need to take their child directly following a contest. This must be taken care of in writing. When picking up a student at the contest site, the student or parent must give their bus chaperone a written note, signed by the parent or guardian, before the student may be released. No student will be allowed to leave an event site with anyone other than his/her parent or another adult, without written permission from their parent or guardian. Parents may be asked for identification if chaperone is not familiar with the parent. These requirements are in place to protect you and your student. The student is also responsible for having someone else unload their instrument and anything else they are responsible for when they are returning to school. 28 Parent Volunteer Opportunities The Riverdale High School Band provides wonderful opportunities for both you and your child. This program, like any great program, requires a great deal of both physical and financial support. Throughout the year, there are many opportunities for adults to be involved with the band program. We need your help to continue to be successful. Some of these opportunities are described below. Fundraising: Every year the Riverdale Band Boosters holds a major fundraising event. This is a major event for the Band Boosters and The Riverdale High School Music Department. Without the funds generated through this fundraiser, the students would not have the opportunity to play on new instruments, repair damaged instruments, provide funding for transportation needs to and from the concerts and festivals, and purchasing new concert music. Chaperones: Only parents or guardians may chaperone events in which their student is participating in. Only assigned students and chaperones are allowed to ride the bus. Chaperones are required on every bus for every trip the band takes. The chaperone’s responsibilities are to make sure the students on the bus are acting appropriately and everyone is safe. They will check off each student’s name from a list provided by the band department. Before leaving a site, they will make sure they have all students and/or a note from the student’s parent. When returning from a trip, the chaperone will assign students to check the bus to make sure it is clean and nothing is left on the bus. Guidelines for Chaperones •

The Band Program is designed for students. Be patient, flexible and helpful. Make sure everyone understands all instructions. Communicate – get to know the students by name. Report any rule violations to the director; but do not create problems. Be courteous and helpful, do not antagonize. You cannot grant a favor for one unless you can do it for everyone. Be patient – Do not loose your sense of humor. 29 Equipment: Equipment parents help all year with whatever needs to be moved, fixed or built. We always have a continuing need for help with building/repairing such things as: moving carts, etc… We need volunteers that can saw, hammer, nail, glue and paint to build these props. There will always be an ongoing need for general maintenance on our equipment and props. Spirit Committee: These volunteers provide the excitement and encouragement for the students. This committee organizes all of the social activities of the Riverdale High School Music Department. They organize snacks after practices and after concerts. They also create decorations and posters for the band room. Office Committee: These volunteers provide their services in the Band Office. They are essential to success of the Riverdale High School Music Department. They provide assistance with organizing and sorting music, copying and etc… Please consider being involved. There is always something that needs to be done. Your help is greatly appreciated. Please, don’t wait to be asked, if you see something going on that looks interesting to you, offer to help. It is a great way to meet, not only your children’s friends, but also their parents. 30 FAQ’s for Parents Many parents have questions or concerns about things pertaining to the band activities and don’t know where to get the information or who to ask. We have tried to put together a list of those most frequently asked questions and the answers. We hope this helps!! Q. What if something comes up, and I need to pick up my child or take my child to a concert instead of letting them ride the bus? A. If possible, please inform the director in advance. Please give the chaperone on the bus a note if your child rode to the contest but will not be riding home. The buses cannot leave a contest until all students are accounted for. Q. What kind of food does my child need to take with them to a concert? A. They need to have nutritious food and water, lots of water. There is nowhere to buy food usually, and the students are on a pretty tight schedule. If special arrangements are being made for food, those announcements will be sent out separately by email. Q. How do I get to an off-‐campus concert, festival or event? A. You can car pool with other parents or drive yourself, following the directions that will be posted on the show schedules in the band room. Q. What else will I have to pay for? A. Most other expenses are voluntary. There will be pictures offered from professional photographers at some of the events. These photographers work independently and the boosters do not make any money from these sales. You may buy show shirts, yard signs, car flags, window stickers and buttons from the boosters. Any profits made by the band boosters on the sale of these items are placed in the general fund. Each section of the band may order section shirts they design each year. You may order one for yourself. Q. When does the band practice and what time is practice over? A. Marching Band practices occur after the school day. The after school ensembles are from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. on the scheduled day. Q. How can I get calendars, schedules and other important information? A. This information is always available in the wall pockets inside the band room and outside Mr. Golden’s office. Mr. Golden also emails the weekly performance schedules. 31 Q. What if my student loses something while at band? A. If you student has misplaced anything, please check the lost and found in the band room. The lost and found is cleared out on a regular basis. Q. If I can’t find the answer to my question in this book, who do I ask? A. You may certainly contact Mr. Golden at (239) 649-‐4141 or [email protected], emails are preferred. 32 Parent Volunteer Form
