Summertime
Active Play
By Home Grown Kids
With summer upon us it a great opportunity to set up
some outside play activities, courses and challenges for
preschoolers. Here are some of our top outside play
activities to assist cognitive and sensory development, fine
motor skills and active movement abilities.
Challenge Course Play
Challenge courses are a popular outside play
activity and can easily be altered in a variety of
ways to encourage each child’s individual needs.
Use plants to walk along, bricks to step between
and even the garden hose to balance on top of,
or raise high to crawl under. Active movement
outside allows children to use their natural
environments and objects they find in their
environments such as low walls or steps.
Ball Play Throw, kick, pat and bounce
to develop hand-eye coordination. Use different
sized balls to extend children’s active movement
abilities. You can use a plastic 2 litre milk bottle
to make a great scoop for catching balls, or set
up baskets or buckets for balls to be thrown
into. Substituting a ball for a balloon can be a
great change too. Fill the balloons with confetti
or other objects for a fun surprise when they
pop but remember
to always dispose of
a popped balloon as
they can be a choking
hazard.
Suspending a balloon
and using a fly swat
to bat it is also a great
way to develop handeye coordination.

Water
Play
Children enjoy
water play of
any sort, be it an
elaborate water wall, or a bowl of water with
small containers to fill and pour. Kitchen items
make great water play toys - sieves, pots, cups,
spoons, funnels and whisks. Children can play
for hours pouring, floating objects and making
water operated wheels spin. It can all be exciting
to see what way each child will use these tools.
Make ice overnight to use the next day. Freeze
water in different sized and shaped containers
and add food colouring to give it some interest.
Add the ice blocks to bowls of water and see
what happens or leave out on the grass or deck
and watch it melt. Blocks of ice are great for
imaginative play also – try freezing items inside
the ice or use with toy sea creatures, dinosaurs,
diggers and trucks etc.
Bubble Play
Bubbles are fun and
create a lot of active movement as children
blow, chase, clap and stamp on bubbles. Take the
bubbles outside in winter time and blow. Watch
the bubbles freeze in mid-air! Isolate different
fingers and body parts to pop the bubbles,
naming them as you do. This helps with cognitive
and sensory development.
Tents, Tunnels and Forts
Building a tent, tunnels
or fort requires a lot of cooperation and physicality, and while the children
love to play in it once it’s finished, putting it together is half the fun! Drag out
a mattress for your fort and raise is slightly for forward rolls. A couple of tarps
or sheets and some boxes to create different areas are all that you need.
Messy Play
Children learn best through exploration
and what better way to stimulate the senses than through
something engaging and messy! Create different textures for
children to play with by giving them clay, play dough, paint, sand,
dirt, soap and slime. Engage the children by talking about the
texture, weight, colour temperature, and other senses..
Here are some recipes for messy play…
Slime Recipe
Dissolve 1 Cup Lux Flakes in 2 litres of warm water.
Add food colouring if desired.
Allow mixture to stand until it becomes thick and slimy.
Beat with an egg beater to make it froth.
Present slime in tray with spoons, funnels, cups,
sponges, sieves, whisks etc. For kids to experiment with.
Cloud dough or Moldable Sand Recipe
5 cups of plain flour
1 cup baby oil
Mix well together and PLAY! That’s it!
Sparkle Soap Mud Recipe
Mix together 3 bars of solid soap grated into
shavings, one roll of toilet paper torn into tiny
pieces and 2 jugs of quite warm water. It needs
to be hot enough to melt the soap shavings.
Experiment!
Stir with big spoons, mash with a potato
masher and/or whisk it up into a lovely pulpy,
bubbly, smooth mush! If it is too wet add a little
more ripped toilet paper, if too pasty then add
more warm water. Finally add glitter! It has a
WONDERFUL consistency.
Whenever you are outside with children make sure they SLIP on a shirt, SLOP on
30+ sunscreen, SLAP on a hat, WRAP on some sunglasses and SLIDE into the shade.

Politically Incorrect Parenting - by Nigel Latta
Even though this book is written by a clinical psychologist who specialises in
working with children with behavioural problems, it is not a heavy jargon-filled
read. Far from it, even the most sleep deprived parent could manage it! I found
it clever, surprisingly funny and full of useful and practical parenting advice. I
appreciated Nigel Latta’s honesty in his own parenting (yes, even Nigel Latta
sometimes rings his mum for guidance) and I loved that his advice wasn’t at all preachy. Think of it as a
self-help guide to raising a functioning human being without losing your sanity (or hair) along the way.
You’re a hero, Daley B! by Jon Blake and Axel Scheffler
Giveaways!
We have 1 copy of each book to give
away to 2 lucky readers, email phb.plunk et@gmail .com
with "book competit ion Nigel Latta" or "book competit ion
Daley B" in the subject line to enter.
This hilarious picture book is instantly
recognizable as one of Axel Scheffler’s – the
illustrator of The Gruffalo. Here he teamed up
with Jon Blake, the author of the “Stinky Finger” series for teenagers to create a lovely book for little
ones about a rabbit with an identity crisis.
Daley B is a very friendly looking guy full of questions: He doesn't know what sort of animal he is, where
he should live, what he should eat or why he has such big feet. He decides to live in a tree and eat
acorns, but he still doesn’t know why his feet are so big. Then, one day, there is panic in the woodland.
The wicked weasel Jazzy D is on her way – and she eats rabbits! But Daley B is unperturbed – and
when Jazzy D attacks, he finally finds a use for his big feet and kicks her. He also finds out what he is – a
hero! And a rabbit!
My kids love this book and laugh out loud about the funny questions that Daley B asks, accompanied by
the fantastic illustrations of Daley B eating fish, waterskiing or living in a web.
This book is a great bed time story for toddlers who will also spend a lot of time just looking at the
pictures again and again and ideal for the older ones starting to read. Enjoy!

Recipe Corner
Banana Pikelets
Prep time: 10 mins
Cookin g Time: 4-5 mins
Makes approx imately
14 pikelet s
Method:
These pikelets are a nice healthy alternative to the
traditional. The mashed banana and maple syrup
makes them sweet enough, and the spelt flour
is a more easily digestible grain for little tums. A
great kids’ breakfast, morning or afternoon tea, and
always welcome in a lunchbox!
Ingredients:
1 egg
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup mashed ripe banana
½ cup wholemeal spelt or regular flour
½ cup white spelt or regular flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
¾ cup milk (approximately)
Butter and rice bran oil (or another flavourless
oil) for the pan
Beat together the egg, sugar, maple syrup and
vanilla until thick. Add in the mashed banana
and stir through. Sift in the flours and baking
powder and carefully mix with the milk into the
egg mixture (it’s important to have a nice thick
batter, but add more milk if needed). Heat a
large pan on a medium heat. Add a teaspoon of
butter with a dash of oil to prevent the butter
from burning, and allow to melt and coat the
pan. Spoon dollops of the pikelet mixture into
the pan (approx 2 tablespoons for each pikelet).
Wait until small bubbles appear on the pikelet
and then flip over to cook
the other side
until golden.
Stack onto a plate
and serve warm as
they are, or cold with
a little butter and jam
or honey. Delicious.

A Christmas Day Out
By Rochelle Sewell
The giant Santa on Auckland’s Queen Street is,
for me anyway, an iconic part of an inner city
Christmas trip. But seeing his jolly face is just the
start of a Christmas outing with little people.
Getting there by bus is a great option. The
Inner and Outer Links (see www.maxx.co.nz)
provide a regular service, have kneeling buses
for buggies, and save all the hassle of parking.
Disembark on Queen Street and immerse
yourself in the Christmas vibe.
Once you’ve seen the big Santa up close, head
to Smith and Caugheys, another Christmas
institution. Like New York’s own Macy’s, Smith
and Caugheys welcome you in with their
fantastic window displays featuring ornate
wooden elf puppets busily making toys in Santa’s
workshop. Parents will however need to heed
my warning and be prepared to take a place
in the line and have a bag of distractions at the
ready. If you can, get in there early before the
queues go mad. This year’s display opens 26th
November see www.smithandcaugheys.co.nz for
details. For your entry fee kids will enjoy a dark
room lit up by an enchanted forest of Christmas
trees draped in sparkly white fairy lights. Next
they’ll see more magical window displays before
being guided by elves to meet Santa. A good
tip is to be there earlier in the day and save the
lunch at Bite café on the top floor as a treat
for afterwards. There you’ll find kids size lunch
options and highchairs.
Next stop is the Wynyard
“Christmas” Quarter. Santa’s
customised Christmas
bach not only provides
a Christmas experience
but a chance to donate
gifts to those in need via
the Auckland City Mission
collection see
www.aucklandcitymission.org.nz. The
playground is also a year round favourite as
well as having Christmas markets and open air
movies for the festive season.
Whatever your faith, a great way to explain
to small children how people around the
world came to celebrate Christmas is to see
the wonderful nativity display at St Benedicts
Catholic Church (St Benedicts Street,
Newton). The church is open daily to the
public till 9pm and is free of charge although
a donation toward the upkeep of the old
cathedral is always appreciated.
Christmas Pantomimes aren’t a big kiwi
tradition but are a lovely afternoon outing.
Look out for a great selection of Christmas
plays including those handy to our Plunket
families at the Pumphouse Theatre and the
Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna.
As a grown up I love the Franklin Road
Christmas lights but with sunset not arriving
till around 9pm on an Auckland December
evening it’s a bit late for younger kids to enjoy.
If you want to end your Christmas outing with
bright lights search the web for lists of local
streets that have started their own Christmas
light traditions; try www.viewauckland.co.nz.
Our family favourite is Motat’s Christmas
Lights. They open early and tired children
can peek at the lights as the sun goes down
before heading home to sleep.

Managing Christmas Indulging!
Many health goals can be derailed over a special
holiday and Christmas is no exception. Successfully
managing this time is all about finding the balance
between enjoying a few festive treats and minimising
the damage of over indulging ... so here are a few tips
for you:
Breakfast – start each day with a good, highprotein breakfast which will keep your blood sugar
levels stable from the start of the day, helping you
make good food choices throughout the rest of the day.
Because it is a holiday, feel free to experiment with
bacon, gourmet sausages, mushrooms and halmoni
cheese for different protein options.
A treat once a day – in a perfect world, we would
all be going through Christmas like good nutrition
angels without even looking at chocolate ... hmmm ...
well for those of you who have a soft spot for treats,
limit yourself to one treat a day or every second day.
Preferably, save your treat until at the end of the day so
that the least amount of damage to your blood sugar
levels (and thus your hips) occurs.
I would also recommend the same guidelines to
children. Check out my Coconut & Date Truffle recipe
for a healthy Christmas treat alternative that even your
children will enjoy making!!
Nourish with good food - holidays are all about
coming together with friends and family, so why not
use this time to try out a new recipe and/or celebrate
with good wholesome food that everyone will enjoy as
at the end of the day, this is ultimately what a holiday
is all about!
Alcohol – unfortunately alcohol is very calorie
dense and nutrient poor. Over indulging in a few
glasses too many can tip the scales of your weight
maintenance goals.
Put some personal limits around this so that you do
actually enjoy your favourite beverage without throwing
caution to the wind, as this will create a continuous
guilt-cycle. In addition, make sure you have at least 3
alcohol free nights a week to give your body a chance
to re-set.
Coconut & Date Truffles~
Ingredients:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
2 cups of pitted dates
1 cup of roasted/salted peanuts
½ cup of desiccated coconut
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa
1 tsp of vanilla essence
75% (plus) dark chocolate (optional for rolling)
Extra desiccated coconut (optional for rolling)
Directions:
1.
Place dates into a bowl and cover with hot
water (to soften slightly).
2.
Place all other ingredients into the food
processor and prepare a plate with baking
paper to place rolled truffles.
3.
Drain the dates, place into the food processor
with all other ingredients and pulse 2-3 times
before blitzing until all combined.
4.
Roll mixture into little balls – you can enjoy just
as they are or place into the fridge to cool for
coating.
5.
Melt dark chocolate over a double-boiler, dip
truffles quickly into the chocolate and place
back on the baking paper. You can also sprinkle
with some extra desiccated coconut here as
well. Place back into the fridge to set coating.
