2015 was a year of significant change in the world of disability services, creating an array
of navigational challenges and opportunities for Abilities First. Thanks to some critical
re-trenching and stepped up efforts of both board and staff, I’m proud to report that
Abilities First continues to be recognized as a leader in finding new and better ways to
help people who are differently abled to achieve their unique potential. Allow me to
highlight a few.

With a renewed emphasis on community inclusion and individual choice, we’re
offering broader and more enriching options to our Adult Day Program participants
than ever before.
We invested in a number of esthetic improvements to Doty House to make it look
and feel more homelike for our residents.
Knowing that deciding “what I want to be when I grow up” doesn’t always happen
as naturally for kids with special needs as it does for their typically developing
peers, we partnered with multiple local businesses to provide a summer career
exploration experience for teens.
M i s s i o n
Empowering people with disabilities
to achieve their unique potential from
birth through life.
Along with these service enhancements, we continued to progress in our
marketing efforts, finding new ways to share our story more immediately
and interactively. A professionally produced promotional video, a fresh
new website, and an intentional social media presence have increased our
visibility in the community. Our goal is never again to hear someone tell
us “If only I had known about you sooner!”
As you read through these pages, please know how much we
thank you for your support over the years and appreciate your
commitment to our mission for the future.
V i s i o n
Regards,
All people with dis abilities have the oppor tunity to
achie ve their unique potential and quality of life.

Abilities First aspires to be the region’s first choice

Adult Day Program (ADP)
Abilities First Adult Day Program offers activities that are appropriate to our clients’ abilities
and tastes, delivered on site and in the community. Our facility’s open floor plan creates a
safe environment that invites our clients to move about without restriction.
Participants in the Adult Day Program experience…
•
Community inclusion – structured outings to parks, restaurants and
many other places in the community
•Art – clients can express themselves through crafts, pottery and other
creative projects
•Exercise – group sports and Wii games to improve health, coordination
and develop social skills
•Technology using IPads – clients learn basic computer skills and enjoy
games
2015 was a building year for the Adult Day Program. ADP evaluated systems,
services and approaches to providing quality services. The team focused
on developing programming that would
target growth by being a place where
individuals like to go and spend their days.
Engagement, person centered planning,
training, and community inclusion became
the themes that guided the program
development process. As the year closed,
ADP began to see growth and gained
attention from outside stakeholders. A total of
42 clients were served at ADP in 2015.

Autism Learning Center
Autism Learning Center is specifically designed for preschool, kindergarten and first grade students on the
Autism spectrum. Our Autism Learning Center addresses individual needs by using state-of-the-art teaching
techniques, small class sizes and a structured environment to help promote a successful transition into the
next grade level. 17 students were served in the Autism Learning Center in 2015.
success story
— Connor began attending the Summer Preschool
for Children with Autism in 2014. Since then he has attended summer school and therapies for two summers,
his regular school in the Autism Learning Center and outpatient therapy services as well as his school-based
therapies year round.
When he first came to Abilities First he was just 3 years old and recently diagnosed with autism. He did
not communicate verbally, and his family wondered if he would ever be able to talk. Now, he starts
conversations with his friends and adults. His family told us one of the biggest changes they have seen
is that he can now ask for things he wants. Instead of pulling on an adult and becoming frustrated and
upset because he is not understood, he now politely asks “open please”, “drink please” etc. They shared
this cute story with us: “Connor saw a puppy on TV. He went over to his father and said “Daddy,
puppy please.” Of course they immediately went out and adopted a husky, and Connor loves her!
“The therapists and teachers have helped us in so many ways. Connor can now do things for
himself. He learns something new every day. They have taught us different ways to help him
calm down when he is upset or frustrated and have helped him learn ways to calm himself. We
have learned how to give him positive reinforcement and
that has made a huge difference in his life,” says mom,
Angelica.
Last year Connor met 86% or 12/14 of his
therapy goals and 75% or 6/8 of his
academic goals.
Way to go Connor!
Doty House and
Hopewell Residential
Abilities First has two Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF’s) that provide a family atmosphere
with a strong foundation for each resident to live life to their fullest potential. 2015 was an
exciting year with many developments and systematic changes.
Doty House provides 20 individuals with disabilities a safe and caring and around the
clock care. The Doty House team focused on improving the physical living environment
and creating a more person centered approach to ensure all the residents live in a place
they can call home. In 2015, Doty House underwent an extreme makeover. New paint,
new flooring, new ceilings, new furniture and personalized living quarters are just a
few examples of the renovations that took place.
Hopewell, located in Franklin, Ohio is home to 10 individuals with disabilities. The
home is quaint and embodies the same spirit and culture as Doty House. Hopewell
leadership continues to personalize rooms, care for residents with dignity, engage
with family and friends and improve systems to ensure quality outcomes. Upon
entering Hopewell, it is evident that this is a home, and our residents love it. Both Doty House and Hopewell met all quality
goals, increased community inclusion, and improved overall customer satisfaction.

Early Childhood
Learning Center
(E C LC)
— The Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) at Abilities First is
a unique childcare center that served 53 children in 2015. We provide an inclusive environment
where children with special needs and children who are developing typically learn alongside
one another and develop caring relationships. We serve children from 6 weeks of age through
the 5th grade. In 2015, ECLC received a 3-star Step Up to Quality rating.
success story
— Penelope’s family has a long history with
Abilities First. Penelope is an 8 month old infant, and she started attending ECLC in August,
2015. Her 9 year old sister, Taylor, and her 7 year old brother, Cohen, also attend the
center and have been at ECLC since they were infants. 7 years ago Cohen was diagnosed
with a medical condition as an infant, and ECLC and Abilities First Therapies have helped
meet his and the entire family’s needs since then. When Penelope started at the center,
both mom and ECLC staff expressed concern regarding her ability to successfully drink
her bottle as well about the strength of her neck muscles. As ECLC staff completed their
routine screening process, mom also gave permission for the Abilities First Pediatric
Therapies team to complete developmental screenings. With the help of our therapists
and using the results from all the screenings, the ECLC staff was able to implement
different strategies to work on Penelope’s feeding and appropriate positioning to
strengthen her neck muscles. ECLC staff has been working with mom every step of
the way as Penelope progressed from laying on her tummy, rolling over, sitting up
and starting to crawl. We feel very
fortunate this mom trusts us to
take care of her 3 children. Mom
says, “I love it at Abilities First!
The staff is amazing, and it is
the only place I trust to take
care of my children.”
Employment Services
— We believe every person should have access to meaningful
employment. Today, there are still many people with disabilities who cannot find employment. We are working to change that
through our Employment Services. According to the 2013 Disability Status Report for Ohio, the unemployment rate of working-age people (ages 21 to 64) with
disabilities in Ohio was 66.1 percent. Our goal is to eliminate barriers to employment and bridge the gap between job seekers with a
disability and businesses looking for motivated employees. This includes educating employers about the value and benefits of hiring
people with disabilities. The Employment Services Department offers a comprehensive range of services for people with disabilities, focusing on job
preparedness and employment. Whether developing new skills, preparing to enter the job market for the first time or seeking to
change careers, our staff is ready to assist clients in reaching their goals. In 2015, 89 clients were served.
success story
— Nathan came into job
development with virtually no real-world work experience. He did
have an associate’s degree in computer science as well as a summer
internship in an IT department. This was almost six years earlier, and
Nathan hadn’t worked at any job since. Nathan was on the autism
spectrum and struggled immensely with face-to-face interaction.
Nathan’s long-term goal was to someday become a network analyst
or programmer, but he understood that he needed to start his career
in an entry-level position in order to gain the needed experience.
He also realized he had to overcome not only the obstacles that his
disability presented, but also the fact he had a weak work history. Nathan began working with
his job developer searching for jobs, honing his interview skills, developing his resume and
cover letters, and applying for, what seemed to him, an infinite number of jobs. After about four
months of hard work, Nathan interviewed with a global IT company and was offered and accepted
a position as a help desk associate. In just under three months, Nathan performed so well that he
was offered a better position at one of the company’s larger offices in California. No one thought
Nathan would accept the job because of how far away it was. One family member also believed it
would put Nathan “out of his comfort zone.” Nathan took the position and moved to California.
Nathan settled into his new job and surroundings and is continuing to work toward his long-term
goal of becoming a programmer.
