Editor’s Note
Happy New Year to all of you! It brings me great pleasure
to introduce to you the brand new LAVA! Some of you who
have previously read Lighting Today would have probably
wondered why the Entertainment Lighting segment vanished.
Well it is a fact that Entertainment Lighting sort of works
hand-in-hand with… It’s a long list, so here you go: Audio
and Visual elements, Consoles and Processors, Data and
Networking Solutions, Fog Machines and Lasers, Projectors
and Video Mapping, LED Tiles, Screens and Displays,
Trussing and Accessories… and the list goes on! All of these
come together to aid designers, engineers, and technicians,
in creating their entertainment masterpieces. So the best way
was to come up with a one-stop informative source that is
based on these industries!
Being the inaugural issue, I believe LAVA has embarked on
a journey to venture and discover new ideas and concepts in
the Lighting, Audio, and Visual sectors. There are areas for
us to venture out and discover, and it is definitely a learning
journey for me. With time, I hope to bring you more improved,
informative and exciting content.
Before I go, here’s a BIG THANK YOU to my colleagues for
their encouragement, especially Judy, who’s been really
supportive with the magazine. Also, I’d like to acknowledge
my fantabulous designer, Sharifah, who has produced
amazing layouts every single time, and she never fails to
surprise me with her creative ideas! My gratitude also goes out
to all editorial contributors, readers, as well as advertising
clients, I appreciate your presence in being an important part
of LAVA. It is great to have you on board and I look forward to
your continuous support.
Well, I shall not hold you any further; here’s wishing you a
prosperous 2013, and enjoy this issue of LAVA!
Adios Amigos!

MORE THAN 100 PR LIGHTING FIXTURES IN
TIANJIN GRAND THEATRE
Tianjin Grand Theatre is the latest in a long line of prestigious architectural projects in China, in which PR Lighting’s advanced automated
fixtures have featured.
M
ore than 100 premium discharge lamps from PR Lighting have been
specified and installed at the new T ianjin Grand Theatre — in the
city’s new 90-hectare Cultural Centre.
Designed by German practice gmp architekten, the $240 million project,
set on an 85,000 square metre site, boasts a 1,600-seat opera house, a
1,200-seat concert hall and a 400-capacity and multi-function hall.
Kunkel Consulting Inter national was in charge of design for the entire
stage machinery, sound and lighting system, working alongside Belgian
theatre and opera house lighting specialist ADB — but it was construction
company Zhejiang Dafeng Industry who recommended PR Lighting as the
primary suppliers based on their experience working with the products
on previous projects. The PR solution was preferred not only for the
comprehensive feature-set but because of the competitive pricing, and
the fact that the products can be serviced locally.
Specified among the generic lighting in the opera house are a total of
67 PR Lighting fully featured XS 1200 Wash moving heads and 45 PR
Lighting XS 1200 Spot projectors — using the powerful 1200W discharge
lamp. From the same series, eight PR Lighting XL 1200 Framing fixtures
(equipped with four rotatable framing blades) were chosen.
The construction brief had always been to position this alongside the
National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Shanghai Oriental Arts
Centre and Guangzhou Opera House in terms of status. Thanks to the
stunning architecture — with its shell-like canopy overlooking an artificial
lake — the Grand Theatre is the shining jewel in the city’s Cultural Centre
that includes two museums, a library art gallery, a youth activity centre
and shopping centre.

Clay Paky Alpha Spot
QWO 800 ST on Tour with moe.
N
o sooner did North Creek,
New York’s Creative Stage
Lighting Co., Inc. take delivery of
Clay Paky’s Alpha Spot QWO 800
ST fixtures for its inventory than
they deployed eight of them for
jam band moe.’s continuing US
tour.
“In the 800-1000W range of New
Age automated spots, it made
immediate sense to us to add
the QWO 800 ST to our rental
and production fleet with its
competitive features and price
point,” said Creative Stage’s
George B. Studnicky IV. “Not
only does the unit stand out from
1000W units, at only 800W it has
a very sleek and compact design.”
Clay Paky’s Alpha Spot QWO 800
ST uses the latest MSR Platinum
lamp, an 800W light source that
produces an intense sparkling
light – brighter even than older
1200W lamps. The Alpha Spot
QWO 800 ST is equipped with
optical features, placing it at the
top of its class, including a very
wide zoom range from 7.6º to
55º, a uniform beam distribution
at all zoom angles and a unique
Stay-Sharp-Zoom feature that
locks images in focus while
zooming. The fixture is small,
lightweight, silent and has low
power consumption, making it
an excellent tool for TV, theatre,
corporate events and many other
demanding lighting applications.
Jason Huffer, Lighting Designer
for moe., selected eight QWO 800
STs for the theatre-size rig that
accompanies the band on tour.
Huffer first saw the fixtures in an
online video. “They sounded like
a really cool mid-range fixture,” he
recalled. “The wide zoom range
and focus seemed great. Creative
Stage Lighting had just demo’d
them and liked them; we said
we’d take them on tour if Creative
bought them. So it was a perfect
opportunity for both of us.”
Huffer found the Clay Paky DynaCue-Creator function for doing
projection work “very intriguing.”
Dyna-Cue-Creator simplifies
programming with a special
channel featuring sophisticated
combinations of customizable
multiple effects. He liked “the
thought put into the fixtures’
software.”
He added that “the wide zoom
range and keeping gobos in focus
while zooming is very important”
for his work with moe. “The band
does a lot of improvisation and it
enables me to do a lot of on-thefly stuff. I love it when the fixture
does all the creative work for me.
It’s really great!”
Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky
Area Manager for North and
Latin America, commented, “The
QWO has received a number
of accolades from the industry
recently and we’re proud to
see that as well as the fact that
lighting designers are starting to
embrace the benefits of one of our
newest fixtures.”
A.C.T Lighting is the distributor
for Clay Paky in North America.
ETC Lighting
and Control
for Oslo
Konserthus
E
lektrik Solutions of Norway has
supplied lighting and power
control for a refurbishment of the
Oslo Konserthus (Concert Hall).
Some 100 ETC Selador Desire
D40 Lustr+ LED fixtures have been
installed in the auditorium ceiling
for house lighting, along with
another 14 in the choir area behind
the stage, and an ETC Unison
Paradigm system to control them.
Project manager for Elektrik,
Benjamin Reinhoff, explained,
“The Concert Hall’s staff had been
looking at changing their lighting
for some time now but hadn’t
found anything quite right. They
wanted something with the right
light quality and a smooth dimming
curve.
“Through consulting firm ÅF
Lighting Norway, we showed them
a range of different options. Initially,
the technicians saw a white LED
fixture but weren’t happy with the
result – the theatre’s seating fabric
is a special shade of blue, and it
didn’t ‘pop out’ quite right. So we
did a test with ten ETC Selador
fixtures, which, with their seven
LED colours, were specifically
designed to accurately render or
even enhance colours and skin
tones. The consultant, Morten
Jensen, told us it was the best
result he’d ever seen and the only
product which even came close to
matching the specification.”

advantages of the fixtures – and
additional relay modules to their
existing ETC Sensor dimming rack.
Said Reinhoff, “The fixtures are
connected to both Paradigm and
the main lighting control desk. Each
fixture can be pixel mapped – so
the house lights become part of the
stage lighting.”
Paradigm is designed to make
lighting easy to operate by a wide
range of different people, from
lighting technicians to front-ofhouse staff and maintenance
personnel. By offering simple
push button panels or an LCD
screen, the system can offer each
type of user the lighting they
need without requiring a lighting
operator, while minimising the risk
of disturbing anyone else, such as
when turning the house lights on
during a performance. In addition
to providing lighting control at
the touch of a button, there are
Norway’s national TV broadcaster

to record concerts, and where
previously the lighting director
would have had big 5K fixtures to
wash the audience in blue, such
power-consuming lighting is no
longer needed. Selador is ideal
for deep colours such as reds and
blue, providing more light at a
fraction of the electricity.
Said Dag Jonny Martinsen,
Technical Manager at the Oslo
Concert House, “The challenge
we had was to emphasise the
symmetry of the room and to be
able to really wash it with light. The
ETC Seladors perform that task well
– we found that the possibilities are
almost endless.
“The feedback we’ve had so far
goes from ‘wow’ from some of the
producers, to nothing at all from
the orchestra – which is a very
good sign!”
Ice Age Live is Painted with Light
L
uc Peumans from Genk,
Belgium-based creative visual
design practice, Painting W ith
Light, has designed the lighting
for the new “Ice Age Live” show
(as seen in picture), a vibrant
stage adaptation of the 20 th
Century Fox ‘Ice Age’ animation
movies, featuring the same much
loved characters and a new story.
The show is scheduled to tour
inter nationally for the next five
years and has just premiered in
the UK, presenting an intricate
collage of magic, music, fantasy,
acrobatics and action directed
by Guy Caron. The audience
follows the colourful and highly
entertaining adventures of
Manny the mammoth, Sid the
sloth and Diego the sabretoothed tiger as they try and
rescue their kidnapped friends,
passing through a series of chilly
environments.

Gason and a set by David Shields.
Peumans has worked on many
other Stage Entertainment projects
in recent years, including the
massively successful Holiday on
Ice since 2005. He commented,
“It is a real honour to be working
with such a prestigious production
team”, which also includes
spectacular video and motion
Peumans’ starting point for the
lighting design was the knowledge
that it needed a theatrical rather
than a traditional ice show
approach, and also that the
lighting had to be imaginative in its
own right while complementing the
video. This creates a vast digital

backdrop and is fundamental to setting the mood, feel and location of
each scene.
Over 300 special gobos are used in a variety of Clay Paky moving
lights to help the process of matching and texturing the ice and the
props. Another vital consideration for lighting in general is the arena
viewing angles, which go from 180 to 270 degrees, offering a more
open and wider vista than a standard theatre setting.
Lighting helps animate the characters, with the costumes taking
light exceedingly well, together with the large inflatable rock-face set
downstage of the video screens. A substantial trussing grid installed
above the ice provides positions for most of the lighting as well as
flying facilities for performers and props.
Peumans chose 60 Robe LEDWash 1200s to use as his base and
general wash lighting all over the ice and for the main set pieces. Six
are positioned backstage to light the rear of the set and the voids
which appear when the screens open.
Twenty Robe LEDWash 600s are positioned on the floor around the
perimeter of the ice, skimming over the surface and providing low level
cross lighting for the performers and larger dance ‘chorus’ numbers.
For Spots and Profiles, he’s specified Clay Paky’s Alpha 1500 series –
32 Spot HPEs and 26 Profiles, which are dotted all over the grid. The
Spots are split between creating gobo texturing, overlaying colour,
painting the surfaces and for character ‘special’ positions. The rockface set is lit with just six Alpha Spots that are fitted with special
masks to prevent any light spillage.
Five Alpha Profile 1500s have been converted to follow spots, with the
pan / tilt removed and dimmer and Iris control knobs added. On/off
and intensity is controlled from the grandMA2 desk, which runs all the
lighting cues, triggered by timecode generated from the audio track.
This is a common Peumans touch to ensure that the spots blend
harmoniously with the rest of the lighting.
Robert Juliat
Followspots

profiles for
Japan’s Zepp
Theatres
R
obert Juliat’s Japanese
distributor, Theater
Engineering, has recently supplied
Robert Juliat followspots and LED
profiles to Tokyo’s Zepp DiverCity
and Osaka’s Zepp Namba concert
halls. The equipment was supplied
to lighting and sound equipment
specialists, Sogo Butai Co. Ltd.,
who carried out the installations.
Zepp concert halls are a group
of dynamic, busy venues, which
are spread across all areas of
Japan and play host to many
inter national tours and Japanese
musicians. They offer a broad
programme of music and tours,
designed to appeal to all ages,
with upcoming dates including
Paul Weller, The Offspring, Slayer
and Brahman.
The Zepp venues are also popular
locations for corporate events and
conventions.
Also in the rig are W ildfire UV guns and some custom-built LED
practicals from Invent Design, devised by Peumans to inter nally light a
series of scenic stalactites hanging beneath the trussing grid.
Another custom item is a 600 Nanno-dot LED star-sky ceiling.
Peumans also specified the atmospherics – fog, hazer and snow
machines.
It is not a massive lighting rig for the scale and complexity of the show
– it also all had to fit into one truck! – so each fixture has to be multipurpose and all of them have worked really hard.
Now the show is up and running, and the lighting – programmed on
a grandMA2 full size and run on a grandMA2 light - is operated by
members of the Stage Entertainment touring crew.
All lighting equipment is being supplied by leading Belgian rental
company, Phlippo Showlight. In addition to the lighting design, Painting
W ith Light also supplied and programmed the Coolux Pandora’s Box
media server storing all the video content.
This is interfaced with the Kinesys automation system, so video is
re-sized in real-time and fitted exactly to the LED panels as they open
and close for entrances and exits.
Painting with Light’s two programmers were Paco Mispelters (lighting)
and Jo Vaas (video and animatronics).

MAC III AirFX™ “Takes a

November 26, 2012; O2 Arena, Berlin
Deep Purple jams in its Rock n Roll style with its classic rock music and sensational
lighting effects.
D
eep Purple’s lighting designer
Louis Ball has just given
Martin Professional’s new MAC III
AirFX lighting fixture a thorough
workout on the definitive rock
band‘s November / December
arena outing across Europe.
A classic rock ‘n’ roll show it
is, complete with guitar and
drum solos and row of on-stage
Marshall amps. Once recognized
by The Guinness Book of World
Records as “the globe’s loudest
band“, Deep Purple can still put
tour by TDA Rental. “The show is
evolving every night and the looks
I can get with the AirFX are an
important part of the design. I’m
quite happy with the lamp and I
love the zoom.“
TDA has delivered the full
production for Deep Purple for
the last 10 years. After receiving a
shipment of MAC III AirFX fixtures
on November 5, they were able
to supply them in time for Deep
Purple‘s first European show on
November 8.
Louis, who has been with Deep
Purple since 1984, wasn’t shy
about putting the fixture‘s through
their paces with a trim height of
10 metres, giving ample room
to see what the fixtures could
do. Twenty-four MAC III AirFX
were paired with MAC III Profiles
across an upstage, midstage and
downstage truss with one AirFX on
each side of the downstage floor
used as side light.
The fixture‘s versatility as a beam,
mid-air effect or wash luminaire
was clearly evident. Louis used
the full spectrum of colour from
the AirFX’s CMY colour mixing
system and 7-slot colour wheel,
coupled with the fixure’s 10-47°
linear zoom, for a variety of wash
and beam looks throughout the
show while filling the air with
aerial effects. He also tur ned
them upstage for gobo projection,
including custom Deep Purple
gobos, onto a back curtain. As a
new element as of the November
26 Berlin show, Louis also used
them to decorate a front kabuki
curtain prior to the show’s start.
Besides the MAC III AirFX and
MAC III Profiles, 18 Martin MAC

on a powerful, energy-filled show,
and that goes for the lighting rig
as well.
Deep Purple plans to release a
new album in 2013 followed by a
world tour.
Deep Purple’s latest tour may not
be as ear-splittingly loud as year’s
past, thanks to sound exposure
limits, but there are no limits on
how bright or active a lighting
rig can be. And Louis takes full
advantage.

“LUMINOSITY, POWERED BY PEPSI”

esigned as a grandiose and
captivating live performance,
“Luminosity, Powered by Pepsi”
lit up the massive set and
stage in Celebration Plaza at
Cedar Point, the second-oldest
operating amusement park in the
United States. The 35-minute
interactive experience was the
perfect way for visitors to end a
day of excitement at the park this
summer. Hundreds of CHAUVET ®
fixtures were part of this
cutting-edge show that featured
mesmerizing displays of lights,
music and dance performances,
special effects, fireworks,
pyrotechnics and live DJ action.
“Luminosity, Powered by Pepsi”
used about 700 CHAUVET ® lights,
making it the focal point of Cedar
Point at nightfall. More CHAUVET ®
fixtures lit up Millennium Force
and Power Tower attraction
rides, and the Midway show that
takes the visitor on a colourful
experience from the entrance of
the park to Celebration Plaza,
place of “Luminosity.”
Al Crawford, Lighting Designer
and President of Arc3design,
designed the elaborate lighting
rig for the event, successfully
merging different design genres
into the set. “We love designing
for dance, theatre, concert,
live event, and environmental
projects,” Crawford said. “We
mixed all of our experiences
in these genres into one huge
project.”

Andrew Strain, lighting designer
and owner of Blue Haze
Entertainment specified all
of the CHAUVET fixtures and
programmed the lighting for the
Midway show, Millennium Force
roller coaster and Power Tower
attraction. Jeremy Doucette
served as production designer for
the show.
While designing Luminosity
Celebration Plaza, Crawford
looked to create the ideal
environment for a live
entertainment-based evening
experience. “The design entailed
a number of different criteria,”
Crawford said. “It needed to be
able to serve the needs of the
stage show itself, the after-party
club experience, and to integrate
seamlessly with the other design
elements of the space such as
scenic and video. All of the
elements of this show needed to
breathe as one.”
One of the challenges Crawford
overcame relates to the significant
scale of the project. “The park
wanted a space that was almost
operatic on certain levels, but
at the same time intimate and
storytelling,” he said. “We needed
to find and create systems of
fixtures that could fill very large
spaces, but could also do it
with a certain grace. We used
a lot of different vocabularies
of equipment, for example the
Legend™ 412 from CHAUVET ® .”
Crawford wanted to fill not only
the space on the stage and
audience, but the entire scope of
the sky above the performance
space. “We used lighting in a lot
of unique ways to do dynamic
aerial effects that supported the
pyrotechnics and lasers in the
sky,” Crawford said.
A series of long sweeping
continuous curves from 138
Legend™ 412 pixel-mapping
moving yokes were designed
into the environment, used
to create one rocking system
of light that encircled the
space. “We really enjoyed the
Legend™ 412 because we knew
with these beautiful curves of
lighting fixtures, we could create
something that was very organic,”
Crawford said. “W ith this fixture,
we could push colour in mass and
play against the grid-like qualities
of the set, or if desired, we could
playoff the geometry and use them

With just six months to go before this quadrennial
event opens in Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic,
manufacturers and distributors alike are looking to take
advantage of all three days, during which they will meet
and socialise with many of the world’s leading lighting

LumenRadio from Sweden, MacoStar from Hong Kong,
Philips from the USA and the newest addition to the

ADLIB tones up with New Coda ViRAY System and
a stylish fusion of retro and contemporary
lighting effects
L
iverpool-based rental specialist Adlib supplied
lighting and audio for the most recent tour by the
UK’s hottest vocal harmony group, The Overtones.
The ‘Higher’ tour played a variety of venues in a sixweek stint around the UK in the run up to Christmas,
and resumes in Europe in early 2013.
Adlib’s Alan Harrison was systems tech for all things
audio, and ensured that ADLIB’s brand new Coda
Audio V iRAY system was optimised to perfection
daily for FOH engineer Mark Clement.
Ian Tomlinson designed the lighting and set for
Adlib, with Neil Holloway taking it out on the road as
Lighting Director, bringing a suave and a very cool
look and feel to each performance as the band doowopped their way into the festive holiday.
Audio
Adlib’s new V iRAY system uses the same
revolutionary driver format as Coda’s LA series and
is lightweight and ideal for an academy / town and
city hall venue tour like this. The 25Kg weight per
speaker means they can get reasonable amounts
of boxes into the air in most places. In its largest
format on The Overtones, they flew 16x V iRAY
speakers a side together with three SCV-F flown
subs at the top of each array, with four Coda SCP-F
dual 18 subs a side augmenting the bottom end on
the floor.
Coda C10 comparator amps and DN260 crossovers
were used to drive all the Coda elements. Working
on a sensor feedback system, this significantly
helped fine-tune the whole system.
For infills, they used Adlib’s proprietary cabinets
as balcony fills and Coda G-Series for end-ofbalcony fills. The Adlib cabinets were powered by
Labgruppen PLM10000 amps.
Mark Clement specified an Avid Profile 48 channel
desk for FOH and made use of all its on-board
effects and features. The FOH processing / control
rack contained Lake LM 26s and 44s - two of each
- as per Adlib’s standard set up with tablet remote.
Monitor engineer Christiano Vuolo specified a DiGiCo
D5 console, from which he ran ten stereo mixes,
including a technical feed.
The Overtones used Sennheiser SKM 5200-II
handheld radio systems with MD-5235 capsules – a
combination specified by Vuolo - and Adlib supplied
Sennheiser G3 in-ear-monitors for the five of them.

mirror balls - without which, in
true dancehall style, no Overtones
visuals would be complete, and in
fact these were requested by the
band. They were used on a couple
of the shower songs to bounce
flecks of light around the set and
the backdrop. Also on the mid
truss was a kabuki system - the
opening artist performed on front
of this - and it was used for the
band’s intro, which made impact
with dramatic pulsing silhouette
effects around the five stars.
Rigged on the front truss were six
MAC 700 Washes for downstage
coverage, with five 4-way Moles
for audience illumination, and a
pair of 1000W fresnels to highlight
the backing band, who were
neatly ensconced either side of
the set’s central steps. The floor,
set and risers were utilised fully
for additional lighting positions.
Nine Showtec Active Sunstrips
were positioned on the top edges
of the set and under the risers
behind the band, and nine CK
ColorBlaze LED battens on the
floor at the back provided a nice
even wash all the way up the cyc.
In the downstage cor ners were
two-a-side MAC 700 Washes
and they did most of the front
lighting, which was extremely tidy
and worked excellently without
the glare and intrusion of followspots.

The four piece backing band were
all on Shure hard-wireds, and a
full selection of mics and stands
completed the package, together
with a set of Adlib MP4 wedges
and an MP4 sub, so the drummer
could feel some movement, all
driven by PLM 10000 amps.
Lighting
Ian Tomlinson worked together
with tour and production manager,
Paul Allen, to devise the set,
with some input from the band.
The result was a stylish retro and
contemporary fusion to suit the
band and the tempo of the show.
The set was designed from the
outset to optically enlarge the
performance area and be flexible
enough to fit sensibly into all

the venues, giving a good visual
consistency.
The lighting was based on three
trusses. The rear truss contained
ten Martin Professional MAC
700 Profiles and six MAC Aura
LED washes plus the custom
illuminated ‘The Overtones’ sign,
that was built by LS Live. Behind
this was a full white cyc backcloth, with 11 strings of festoon
hanging immediately behind.
These worked highly effectively
as a diffuse, sparkly effect which
also produced a shimmery, soft
ambient glow across the cloth.
On the mid truss were six MAC
Auras, five MAC 700 Washes
for upstage front light, and two
Under the Perspex fronted
risers were five JTE PixelLine
1044 battens, and six more JTE

up the central steps, cleverly
concealed under the upstage
section of the set risers, mounted
in a meat track for quick and easy
deployment. There was also a
single 1000W Fresnel backlighting
The Overtones themselves just for
the intro silhouetting effect.
All the lighting instruments were
carefully positioned and worked
hard to cover all the dance moves
and the whole stage, which was
fully utilised throughout the set,
which rocked by encompassing a
wide variety of genres.
Holloway ran the show from a

choice. Joining Holloway on the
lighting crew were Neil Smith and

St. Andrews Lutheran Makes Sound
Improvements With L-ACOUSTICS
L
-ACOUSTICS Certified Provider Audio Video
Electronics (AVE) of Maple Grove, Minnesota,
recently installed an L-ACOUSTICS KIVA loudspeaker
system at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in nearby
Mahtomedi.
According to AVE Vice President Kevin Crow, “St.
Andrews has a beautiful 1,200-seat sanctuary with
a nearly five second reverb time, so going into this
project, we knew that speech intelligibility was one
of our primary issues of concer n. Furthermore,
with an 80-member choir, chamber group and huge
pipe organ, St. Andrews’ services feature quite an
emphasis on music as well, and they were wanting to
have it feel more ‘present’ in the sanctuary seating
areas.”
W ith those requirements in mind, AVE specified an
L-ACOUSTICS line source system featuring left and
right arrays each comprised of nine KIVA enclosures
flown adjacent to three KILO low-frequency extension
cabinets. A pair of SB18i subs are flown behind each
KIVA array for true LF reproduction, and all systems
are powered and processed by a total of four LA8
amplified controllers.
“W ith the previous loudspeaker system, the sound
always felt rather distant out in the pews,” Crow
recalled. “Not anymore. The KIVA-KILO arrays

DPA Microphones Cope Brilliantly With
High Altitude
R
ecording at high altitudes is not something
most sound engineers tackle every day, so
when Danish producer and engineer Hans Nielsen,
of Focus Recording Studios, was asked to record
a choir of 500 monks in a Chinese temple that was
over 4,000 metres above sea level, he knew he would
need a very resilient microphone to cope with the
challenging conditions.
Said Nielsen, “I’ve always been a big fan of DPA
Microphones and have used them regularly for
over 25 years. When I realised this project involved
recording at high altitude I knew I had to take my
DPA microphones with me because they were the
only mics I could rely on to capture the high quality
sound I wanted in such extreme conditions.”
Hans Nielsen was recording the album with
inter nationally acclaimed folk singer and songwriter
Sa Ding Ding.
“Sa Ding Ding wanted to include the Monk’s choir
in her album, so we travelled to the temple, which
was high up in the mountains near T ibet,” said
Nielsen. “The monks were singing a mass and we
captured their performance using nine DPA 4006A
omnidirectional microphones and one DPA 4011A
cardioid. Then, later that night, we used the same
microphones to record a choir of 100 monks so that

their singing could also be incorporated into two of
Sa Ding Ding’s album tracks.”
Two days later, and this time at an altitude of 2,000
meters, Nielsen recorded a 50-strong Christian choir
for the album, again using DPA microphones. Nielsen
explained he chose the DPA 4006A and 4011A
microphones because he was confident they could
deliver the impeccable sound he was looking for.
Nielsen completed the album in Beijing, and the
album, which is entitled The Coming Ones, has now
been released in Asia by Universal Records.

the Ibis Hotel.
Announcing the move, Exhibition Director, Richard Brook, said, “This
will provide exhibitors, especially manufacturers and distributors of
audio equipment, the opportunity to present their products in a live
environment alongside the show.”
“Taking this feature to a purpose-built outdoor environment means
there’s more flexibility for exhibitors to show off what their kit can do
with minimal impact on other participants at the show.”
T imetabled slots in Soundcheck are limited and each of the exhibitors
taking part will receive one mor ning and one after noon session on each

Mumford and Sons pick Martin
Audio MLA for UK Arena tour

The Martin Audio MLA system has been used for the band’s debut arena tour in the UK.
M
umford and Sons FOH engineer Chris Pollard elected to take
out audio rental company Capital Sound’s new Martin Audio
MLA system for the band’s debut arena tour in the UK.
“The MLA momentum is building and we knew that once Chris got
to hear the system that he would go for it,” said Capital’s General
Manager, Paul T immins. “But because of the band’s hectic schedule in
Australasia and North America, we had a problem simply getting him in
front of it.”
However, Chris managed to spend some time at London’s 02 Arena
during the Killers’ first show day there. “We showed him around
the equipment and then he listened to the incredible coverage
MLA delivers without the need for the delay hangs that are usually
necessary for The O2,” continued Paul. “He made his decision later
that day.”
The tour, which starts with some warm-up regional theatre shows, will
carry MLA Compact.
Capital is supplying a four-man PA crew, with Marty Beath, one of the
recently trained MLA technicians, handling system engineering; Fabrice
Quirin, who has worked with the band during the past 18 months for
all the European touring, as crew chief; Mark (Magic) Ellis Cope on
main PA duties; and Tom Whitbread taking care of stage micing.
“We have really high hopes for the audio results on this tour and can’t
wait to hear the rig in action,” concluded Paul. “We appreciate the
loyalty that tour manager Giles Woodhead, Chris and Joel have shown
us, and we’ll ensure they get the great service they’re used to during
the upcoming run.”

A Jands Vista L5 console was responsible for lighting and media
controls for multi-platinum selling rockers, Incubus.
(Continues from Page 22)
Robb was first introduced to the Jands V ista
platform earlier in the year when he was supplied
a V ista L5 on the Australian leg of Incubus’ tour.
Although initially cautious, he was immediately
impressed by Jands’ flagship console with its
powerful V ista v2 software, and after using it, he
chose to make the swap to the platform at the first
opportunity.
Initially using a V ista T2 for Incubus’ spring run,
then a V ista L5 for the high profile Honda Civic
Tour, Robb explains that as a designer, he likes his
consoles “to be as intuitive and easy as possible to
operate”, stating that “the V ista absolutely delivers
on all levels.”
W ith complex timing changes, intricate programming,
an extensive lighting system and multiple video
content and input layers, Robb’s design required a
fast workflow, which the V ista’s simple and powerful
interface helped him achieve.
T iming is central to Robb’s designs, and he really
appreciates the ability to fine tune each detail
quickly and accurately using the V ista’s timeline.
“The V ista makes it so easy to add complex timing
and build intricate programming very quickly. W ith
all the power you need and virtually unlimited
possibilities – what more do you need?” Robb
enthuses.
The L5’s design is dominated by its 21-inch
High-Definition TFT screen, allowing everything
to be accessed quickly and clearly on the rig.
Ergonomically, “It’s a great desk,” says Robb,
commenting that he likes the feel and positioning of
the faders plus the ‘clicky-ness’ of the flash buttons.
The L5 ran the system via ArtNet on the Honda Civic
tour, which proved to be rock solid.
Following such positive experiences using the V ista
control platform, Robb decided to invest in his own
Jands V ista S3 console, which he used as a tracking
backup on the Honda Civic Tour.
Opening for Incubus and Linkin Park were progrockers MUTEMATH, whose LD Darien Koop is also a
dedicated Jands V ista fan.
T
he inaugural Houses of Worship Technologies
Asia 2012 showcased a myriad of the best
products in the Audio, V isual and Lighting markets
today. Held at the Marina Bay Sands Exhibition
and Convention Centre from October 4 to 6, the
event drew a large mix of participants from different
industries. At the show, ESCO displayed some of the
market’s newest and highly sought after equipment
that would enhance the user’s experience and meet
requirements of any kind.
BEHRINGER X-32 Digital Mixing Console
One of the prime attractions displayed was the
latest BEHRINGER X-32 Digital Mixing Console,
which is capable of 32-channel, 16-Bus Total-Recall
Digital Mixing Console for Live FOH, Monitor, and
Recording Applications powered by MIDAS. The
X32’s dedicated channel strip section is infused
with backlit buttons and 13 rotary controls with
LED-collars, which gives the user power to wield
adjustments and create subtle differences in sound
to projects.
Unlike the primeval Digital Mixing Consoles, the
BEHRINGER X32 each possesses I/O channel of its
own, with colour backlit 128x64 LCD that provides
all vital information at one glance. Stated as a “game
changer”, this high demand console has only been
in the market recently, and is already sought after
greatly by many from all walks of life.
Chaiyo Stage Pro Sound System
Another excellent sound system showcased at
the exhibition was the Chaiyo Stage Pro, a costeffective portable sound system that supports two
microphones (wired and wireless), a CD player
with a USB-enabled port, and direct instrument
plugs. According to David Seow, CEO of Control
Logic System, “A good system is all about prudent
spending.” This amazingly durable and portable
sound system enables one to carry their voice
around at the grab of one hand – anytime, anywhere
- and is truly a game changer.
ENEWAVE DA Series Audio Amplifier
Among the many advanced gadgets that are fit for
different occasions, ENEWAVE attracted many with
the DA Series, an audio amplifier, which provides
class leading power output for touring and fixed
installations. This ideal gadget has a Universal
Switched Mode Power Supply that is built for touring
and accepts global voltages at either 50Hz or

surface of a wall or object can be transformed into
an interactive whiteboard to sketch ideas and deliver
concepts. It leverages with sensors from the IPI
software to detect pen movements, which enables
the functions to work miracles.
About ESCO
In this creatively demanding world, still images and
posters no longer dictate the appeal of consumers.
ESCO, in meeting this demand, offers IT-solutions:
Printing, Network, Client, Enterprise and Software
Solutions. ESCO also caters to Professional
Solutions in Digital Media, which is a frequently
enquired premier service, as progression into the

Mediasite
Mediasite, also displayed at the event, is the most
reliable platform for webcasting, recording and
streaming of lectures and happenings in the world.
Mediasite webcasting technology sets recording
automatically, with equal distribution, management
and functions of high-quality video and multimedia
presentations. In the words of Jim Jorstad,
University of W incosin – La Crosse, “Mediasite
extends the classroom to wherever the Inter net is
available and creates important connections within
our community, nationally and worldwide.”
HDMI ® over IP
Amongst the plethora of equipment sampled on
display, Just Add Power presented the stateof-the-art HDMI ® over IP, which allows one to
simultaneously send out a HDMI ® signal to one
or more HDMI ® displays over a single CatX cable
Ether net infrastructure. This superb system is able
to distribute HD digital content from various sources
to literally any number of remote displays on a LAN.
This means, a single screen picture can be blown
up to fit a number of screens into one mega big
screen. This is exceptionally great for a number of
commercial and private applications.
The event was a great eye-opener as it highlighted
the wonders of technology and its ability to enhance
the world nowadays. In an interview with Mr. Jeffery
Fun, ESCO’s President for Regional Business
Development, he mentioned that the aim for the
event was to increase knowledge of technology
today that can enhance creativity to make work
processes smooth and easy. He added that
technology’s aim is for customers to go the extra
mile with little exertion.

HSL Supplies Cheryl

Tour
W
ell… in reality… It wasn’t quite that many… But
leading Blackbur n-based lighting and visuals
rental specialists HSL did indeed supply lighting
equipment and crew to Cheryl Cole’s first solo ‘A
Million Lights’ arena tour, once again working for
technical producers Production North.
The lighting design by Peter Bar nes, directed/
operated out on the road by Neil Trenell of Fix8,
proved that imaginative and intelligent use of lighting
and effects could bring serious layers of magic to a
high-impact show.
The tour was project managed for HSL by Mike
Oates, who commented, “Production North under the
technical direction of Iain Whitehead co-ordinated
another superb looking and highly entertaining show,
and we were really pleased to be involved”.
Bar nes and Trenell worked closely with creative
directors, Fatima Robinson and Beth Honan, who
commissioned the set design from Bruce Rogers.
They also initiated the video and visuals concepts,
bringing a lively mix of footage to the picture, played
back across an upstage pyramid shaped set clad
with LED panels and a set of stairs immediately in
front of it.
The lighting, which matched and contrasted this as
Cheryl’s fast paced, slickly choreographed show
unfolded, was based around three trusses. The front
one was split into two sections to maximise coverage

of a catwalk extending from the
middle of the stage out into the
audience.
The back truss was rigged with 14
Clay Paky Sharpies on drop-bars,
emulating the shape of the LED
screen plus eight Martin MAC 2K
XB Washes and ten Martin Atomic
strobes.
The mid-truss was 60-feet wide,
and contained five MAC 2K XB
Washes and six MAC3Ks, while
the front truss had 16 MAC 2K XB
Washes and six MAC 3 Profiles
in total. On the floor were ten
Sharpies stationed on the stairs,
which mimicked the pyramid
shape of the main upstage LED
screen.
Above the B-Stage, just in front
of the FOH mixer position, a
box truss was flown to provide
positions for ten Sharpies and ten
MAC 2K XB Washes.
HSL supplied two Robert Juliat
Lancelot FOH follow spots, and
Trenell operated the show using
two grandMA Lites and two NPUs,
with two Green Hippo HD i7 media
servers supplied by Fix8. These
stored and ran the show’s entire
video playback, triggered from the
grandMA2.
The general aesthetic was simple,
strong and dynamic, reflecting
the more urban direction of
Cheryl’s recent music and live
performances – which is a great
hit with her fans.
All the lighting fixtures had worked
hard and in a truly multi-purpose
capacity. Clever programming completed during five intensive
days and nights at Elstree Studios
- combined with eye-catching
video, gave the hi-energy show
a big, bold, bright performance
context.

Putin’s Press Conference
I
n December 2012, Russian President Vladimir Putin held his first
significant press conference, since becoming the Russian President
for the second time, at the Moscow World Trade Center. More than
1,200 jour nalists from across the world joined the four-and-a-half hour
press conference.
High-definition LED display screens by Absen (www.szabsen.com) were
installed in the centre and on the left side, on the platform, for the
event’s live broadcast.
Launched in 2012, the high-end A3 display screens by Absen are
capable of providing high definition images with a 3.9mm pixel pitch,
as well as seamless image mosaics. The panels come in a simple, slim
and lightweight design, ensuring easier installation and maintenance.
Absen has successfully implemented several LED display screens in
rental applications for high-end conferences and events, such as the
13 th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in 2012, the
Mercedes-Benz stand at the Beijing Auto Show, the Kazakhstan Police
Day Celebration, France’s 24 TV Station event, and so on.
Bar nes and Trenell made much
use of the frost filter on the
Sharpies, which diffuses the
output very nicely so they can
double as highly effective washes.

“interlocking” seamless AirLED series panels, namely
the AirLED-5, AirLED-6 and AirLED-10.

members are standing 3 metres away, and within a
wide viewing field angle of up to 160°. The AirLED
panels are able to showcase show-stopping visual

leading global car manufacturers.
At this year’s Fiat show in Paris, CreateLED’s

unsurpassed high-resolution images, unlimited
scalability, spectacular TRUE colour uniformity

upon seeing the imaginative use of the AirLED
video display, created by the ingenious Fiat booth
designer.
At JEEP’s booth at the Paris Automobile Show,
the AirLED was assembled into a “T ime Tunnel”,
which was a lear ning jour ney for the audiences

CreateLed’s Director, Mark Chan, explained, “About

and less stable, car show designers were limited
to creating smaller LED video walls in a 4:3 aspect
ratio. But nowadays, CreateLED’s AirLED, “LEGOlike” panel series is extremely cost-effective and
easy to use. From designing, to shipping, to rigging
and dismantling, AirLED panels offer unlimited

XL
V ideo, commissioned by Limited Edition Events, recently
supplied 300 bright and vibrant Pixled F-12 LED tiles for the
Royal Premiere of the latest James Bond film, Skyfall.
The star-studded red carpet event (as seen in picture), held at
London’s Royal Albert Hall, was attended by HRH Prince Charles, the
Duchess of Cor nwall and the stars of the film, along with a host of
other celebrity guests.
After attendees arrived on the red carpet and ascended the stairs
towards the Royal Albert Hall, they were met with the sight of the
classic Aston Martin DB5 with a backdrop of 75 tiles of Pixled F-12.
To the right and left of the stage, two additional tall LED displays,
each with 141 tiles of Pixled F-12 displayed pre-programmed content,
including movie logo animations, and photos of the film’s characters.
A final run of F-12, two tiles high and 80 tiles long, appeared to the left
of the stage, as a backdrop to the red carpet walkway to the door of
the Royal Albert Hall.
XL’s Project Manager, Mark Rooney, specified Pixled’s stunning F-12

loved movie franchises ever. In addition, Pixled F-12 is also suitable for
outdoor use – essential for the unpredictable British weather!
The build for the event took two days and was followed by an even
quicker tear down as the Royal Albert Hall was scheduled to host a
different event the following evening.
“Building the screens took up most of the day,” explained Rooney,
“However the bigger challenge was that we had less than two hours
to break the screen down! Bearing in mind none of the screens were
flying, all were ground stacked or dead-hung, we needed a fabulous
crew of LED engineers on site to achieve this.
“The pin-point planning by the great team from Limited Edition really
helped us to get in and out efficiently. It was a pleasure to work with
them.”
MD of Limited Edition Events, James Bar nfather, commented, “The
South steps of the RAH are a tricky place to work at the best of times;
lots of surrounding neighbours and a strict noise curfew meant nothing
could move until 08.30. “Couple this with shows inside the RAH each
day, and our build time decreased from two clear days to less than 12
hours. Working with Mark Rooney, we decided to use the F-12 screen
in tandem with XL’s superb touring dolly system. This allowed us to
realise our original design with the confidence that it could be installed
in our very tight build window.

“Autosymphonic” wins Gold
Medal at the 2012 EVAAwards

T
he task of the Municipality
of Mannheim, Germany, 125
years after the invention of the
automobile by Carl Benz, was to
come up with an event that would
do justice to his invention, which
changed the world.
Even before it got underway, the
“autosymphonic” was destined to
be an event worthy of superlatives.
More than 200 vehicles, from
which multiple-award-winning
composer Marios Joannou Elia
chose 80 that represented all
eras, were tested. The noises
they made served as the basis for
an eight-movement symphony for
a large orchestra, automobiles,
an adult chorus, and a children’s
choir. A group of 120 youths,
who received a full-year’s free
instruction in drumming in order
to allow them to elicit sounds
from the automobiles on hand
at the event, were chosen from
those participating in numerous
castings held in collaboration with
the Baden-Württemberg Popular
Music Academy.
The unique visualisations,
involving 3D animations appearing
on the water tower and adjacent
buildings, laser shows, and stillphotograph and video collages
presented on a more than 600
square-metre LED screen,
constituted major elements of the
concept.
World-renowned photographer and
video artist Horst Hamann was
responsible for the spectacular
visualisations. The event was
kicked off by a concert by the
“Söhne Mannheims.” Local
youths, the SWR Baden-Baden/
Freiburg Symphony Orchestra, the
SWR Chorus, and the Stuttgart
State Theater Children’s Choir
joined forces in performing the
multimedia “Autosymphonic”
symphony, which gar nered
worldwide enthusiasm: 17,000
spectators, more than 500
jour nalists from 40 countries,
seven television teams from
Asia, the USA, and Europe, and
media contact to an audience
of more than 1.5 billion. The
event was conceived, organized,
and produced by m:con –
mannheim:congress GmbH.
Statement by the Jury
The whole world loves
automobiles; the whole world
loves music. Mannheim, the
birthplace of the automobile, took
advantage of the 125 th anniversary
of its invention and staged the
“autosymphonic” in a four-cycle
time. The result was a poetic
event devoid of retrospectives and
old-timer rallies. Nonetheless, it
swayed the jury with its impressive
video animations, touching
musical compositions, lifeblood,
and tongue-in-cheek ploys, since
where else would one hear a
trunk lid being employed as a
percussion instrument?

Houses of Worship Technologies Asia
Sands Expo & Convention Centre
Marina Bay Sands, Singapore
A
sia’s Inaugural Exhibition and Conference
for Houses of Worship Technologies was
successfully staged in October 2012, at the
Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Center
in Singapore. The three-day exhibition welcomed
some 2,468 professional visitors, with 17% coming
from overseas, many of whom were key decision
makers in their respective organisations. The
exhibition featured over 150 leading brands and
companies from over 15 countries occupying a
gross area of over 5,000 m 2 .
“We were delighted with the results of
this first launched event with positive
feedback from both our exhibitors and
visitors to the event. The educational
seminars and workshops were very
well attended and there was great
interest in the products from buyers
of the houses of worship community,
from both Singapore and the Asian
region. Visitors were surprised to see
such a wide range of equipment and
technologies available to help upgrade
their places of worship with the latest
equipment and technologies.”
Ms. Rosalind Ng, Managing Director,
Informa Exhibitions Pte Ltd.
Highlights: Product Demonstrations, Hands-on
Workshops, and Technology Seminars
Held alongside the exhibition were 26 free product
demonstrations and hands-on workshops,
carried out by the exhibitors. Also, a series of 17
comprehensive technology seminars (including
basic, advanced and industry expert forums) were
conducted by leading industry experts. Features
and benefits of many professional solutions were
discussed and demonstrated to exhibition visitors,
who were delighted to view and learn from them.
“Very good response, though I didn’t have high
expectations but I have come to find that the
quality of products and professionalism is high. The
level of visitors are qualified. Guests are talking to
us about the usage rather than the products itself
and that makes us want to improve. Definitely a
good way to connect to people in the industry.”

The portable and coaxial FA12 loudspeaker is well
suited for a variety of sound reinforcement applications.
Its neodymium coaxial transducer and rotatable 90°x45°
hor n provide broad coverage that is beneficial in both
stage monitor and mains operation. Fulcrum Acoustic’s
TQ™ processing is an integral part of the FA12 design.
Sound, innovative acoustical design combined with
state of the art digital processing leads to exceptional
clarity and precise transient response, even at very
high sound pressure levels. The required digital signal
processing can be provided by one of many supported
platforms. Free air and stage monitor presets are
available for all platforms.
The FA12’s unique TQPassive™ inter nal crossover is
designed to work in conjunction with TQ™ processing.
It provides the high efficiency, excellent damping, and
precise directional control normally associated with
bi-amplified operation, but it does not require a second
amplifier and processor channel. There are no resistive
components in the crossover to heat up, so its response
remains consistent even at high levels.
Features and Specific ations
The new video processor is able to project
3D images with any two regular projectors. In
addition, it comes with edge-blending capabilities
to lengthen the screen, giving viewers a smooth
panoramic viewing experience. Other features

for the first half of 2013 is that it may still be a tough period, but hopefully things will pick
up in the second half of the year, and that the economic condition will improve in USA and
Europe, which will bring in more good opportunities for Chinese exporters.

2013 is the year where with crisis, comes opportunities. Though the world economy may
not seem to have an optimistic outlook, the exportation of Chinese lighting products
are still receiving good opportunities to boost its purpose. W ith more than 20 years of
innovation and development, China has become the product development centre of global
lighting solutions, which have reached superior quality even on par with Europe and
America in terms of product innovations, technology, and guaranteed quality.

Due to the economic crisis in Europe, export growth in China has continuously been
moderate. Certainly, it has affected our businesses in terms of growth. I predict that
the economic situation in China might worsen in 2013; therefore, Chinese lighting
manufacturers will face more difficulties. However, the lighting industry in China has
been in existence for over 20 years, and is a driving force as a huge industrial chain, so I
believe that it can completely resist any financial risks on all of us.

Crises are something to worry about, but there are also opportunities that may arise to
help us cope. I believe that by following certain measures, we can improve our market
competitive abilities. For instance, Goldensea has equipped its production line with
advanced fabrication processes and moder n machinery. We also observe strict quality
management to ensure high quality lighting for our customers. Meanwhile, we aim to
enlarge the market share of our own brand, Terbly, to strengthen its brand influence

Although businesses have been heavily impacted by Europe’s financial crisis, we
wish to remain positive. We did see a decline in our tur nover, compared to the previous
year. At all times, it is essential to maintain regular contact with existing customers, and
at the same time, work on attracting new customers, by exploring their needs. We will be
