Scout leaders don't forget to have your scouts bring in or fax to the Scout Service Center copies of their full-sheet popcorn order sheets so they will be entered into the council’s weekly Friday drawing to win 1 of 5 $100 Academy Sports and Outdoor Gift Cards. The “Fill-It-Up” drawings will be held at noon on: Sept. 26, Oct.3, Oct.10, Oct. 17 and on Oct.24. Also, please encourage your scouts to become members of the $600 sales club. Remind them that if they sell $600 or more they will receive a neat Skylight Rocket and will be invited to an exclusive swim and pizza party to be held at the WTAMU swimming center in January 2015. Leaders remind your Scouts to knock on more neighborhood doors this year! The Trails-End Popcorn Company has done extensive research that shows that less than 20% of all US households have ever been asked to buy scout popcorn and that when asked to buy, 80% of consumers will buy popcorn from a scout. Pumpkin Chunkin at Camp Don Pumpkin Painting Boo! Yes, the annual Cub Scout Spook-O-Ree is right around the corner. On October 11th, 18th, and 25th, at Camp Don Harrington and the 18th at Camp MK Brown, we will have a ghoulish time shooting BB Guns and bows and arrows, painting pumpkins, riding the hay ride, playing midway games, and a ton of other fun things. Check-in begins at 12:30pm with the events open from 1pm to 5pm and the Spook House and Ghost Walk open after dinner. Parents, this event has taken place in the council since the 80’s and historically has as many as 900 Scouts in attendance! Don’t be left out, you can register online at the council web site. Talk to your Pack Leader to see if the whole pack is going as a group before registering yourself! Inflatable Fun!!!!! ARE YOU A T RA INED LEA DER? Cub Scout Leaders should be trained in their current unit position. If you are not trained, the next classroom-based training opportunity is scheduled for November 1, 2014 from 9am to 1pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) located at 2101 N. Coulter St. (west of the Scout Service Center off Tascosa Rd.). Training for Cubmasters, Den Leaders, Tiger Leaders, Webelos Leaders, and Committee Members will be offered. Youth Protection Training will also be provided to everyone along with a briefing on the new Cub Scout Program coming out in June 2015. Although you can complete the required training online at www.myscouting.org, this inclass setting will offer better training for you as you have the opportunity to interact with other leaders and you can ask specific questions of our experienced training “Dream Team” Each position has its own training so if you were a Tiger Den Leader last school year and have moved up to be the Wolf Den Leader, you are required to have that training. Each time you move to a different positon, you need to have the training for that position. For more information and to register, please visit the council web site. The District Award of Merit is the highest honor a district can bestow upon one of its volunteers. Any registered adult leader can be nominated to receive this award. The operative word is NOMINATED – in order for a volunteer to receive the Award of Merit he/ she must be nominated by someone who knows of their dedication to Scouting. The process requires just a little bit of effort on your part but the joy you will receive when you watch your nominee presented with this special recognition is worth the small amount of time needed to collect the necessary information and to complete the form. The nomination form can be downloaded from the Golden Spread Council website at http://www.goldenspread.org/Forms/Forms.htm. The next step is to fill out the form to the best of your ability. Do NOT ask your nominee to provide you with the requested information – we want our recipients to be completely surprised when they receive the award. Information can be obtained from your nominee’s family, friends, unit and the Scouting community. Your district has many adult leaders who are worthy of the District Award of Merit but they will never receive the award if they are not nominated. Please! If you know of a dedicated Scouter who should be nominated for this high honor do not assume that someone else will nominate them. Take a minute now, go to the council website, and download the nomination form. Then encourage all of your fellow Scouters to support your nominee by writing letters of endorsement that can be submitted with your form. The deadline to submit District Award of Merit nominations is Friday, November 7, 2014. A selection committee of volunteers will meet soon after the deadline to select the recipients. Please submit District Award of Merit nomination forms to the Scout Service Center. For questions, contact your District Executive. Battle of Normandy Medal for Living Veterans in our Council The Normandy regional government has created a medal for any living veteran of the Battle of Normandy (D-Day +100) or those who participated in the reconstruction of Normandy after the war. We have been asked to assist in distributing the medals to those Veterans residing in the United States. If you know of a Veteran in our council whom you would like to recognize, we only need to know their name, and unit they were with (rank at the time would be good but not necessary). We will get with the Scout Executive of the Transatlantic Council who will mail the medal and ribbon to the council for presentation. (picture attached). From working with these heroes nothing means more to them than to have youth thank them and be aware of what they did. Having a medal presented by a scout with their thanks means a lot. Each medal needs to be accounted for so we need the names before the medals are sent out. Please contact Scott at [email protected] with the information and he will pass it on. How to Record your Service Hours Many hours are spent by each unit providing service to your chartered partner, local church, community, food bank etc. These service hours spent should be entered by an adult member of your unit at www.servicehours.scouting.org so your unit gets the credit it deserves. Eagle Scout Projects generate many service hours and those should also be entered. If you need assistance entering your hours or have any questions, please call the Scout Service Center. At the Dining Hall they replaced 15 feet of plastic waterline to the evaporative coolers, repaired wood on the eaves, repaired and coated the joints on the raingutters, and replaced 36 ceiling tiles. They also replaced 5 door locks on the building. Finally, they gave the Dining Hall a top to bottom cleaning. Thanks goes out to Helen Harrell, Brian and Jared Freas, Louis Snider, Bob Thompson, and Miguel McWilliams for all their hard work to make Camp MK Brown a little better than they found it! The purpose is to review the current district committee and identify new members for 2015. Nominations from unit leaders and charter partners are encouraged. C O U N C I L N O M I N AT I N G C O M M I T T E E Per the bylaws of the Golden Spread Council Boy Scouts of America, Council President Clint Averitte has appointed a nominating committee to review the current executive board and prepare a slate of officers for 2015. The committee will be chaired by Puff Niegos and is comprised of five members: Brian Bruckner, Bill McCarty, Clint Averitte, Joe Street, and Roger Williams. Contact information for each can be obtained from Scout Executive Andy Price at the Scout Service Center. Nominations are due in writing to Andy Price no later than November 1st, and nomination forms can be obtained by emailing him ([email protected]). WHERE A R E YO U G O I N G TO S U M M E R C A M P I N 2 015 ? Have you thought about where your troop is going in 2015 for your summer camping experience? Many troops plan a year in advance which allows scout parents to start budgeting for the camp fees. Summer camp is where your Scouts earn merit badges, learn about nature, eat great food, and mature as young men. Camp MK Brown, located just west of Wheeler, Texas, is a great experience for all Boy Scouts. For 46 years, scouts have been going to Camp MK Brown for summer camp! Our council has upgraded many of the facilitates over the years and although there are no mountains there is a beautiful lake where scouts enjoy fishing (we heard the “big one” has not been caught yet), sailing, motorboating, swimming and other fun aquatics activities. We offer an awesome first year camper program called “Polaris”. Our young campers spend their day accomplishing Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class rank requirements and earning a few merit badges as well. We also offer two additional programs that older scouts can take part in. The Western Heritage Program will bring your scout back to the western days where they will work with a blacksmith to make cool camp tools, learn how to rope, try their hand at action archery and blackpowder shooting , and learn how to cook with a dutch oven! Our other program is pistol shooting! Only at Camp MK Brown can a Boy Scout shoot 22cal pistols! Our council was fortunate to have been authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to offer this special program. We have a new pistol/rifle range that is lighted for night shooting and is operated by a certified NRA/BSA Shooting Sports Director. This year, our Scoutmasters reported that the food was the best they had ever had at camp and the program was first class! The staff was experienced and provided outstanding instructions at all levels. How much does all this fun cost? We have not completed our fee structure at this time but we are very competitive with any camp within 300 miles of our council and we are only a short distance away from your town. Order of the Arrow Southern Region Section 2-3 North Camp Don Harrington, April 17-19, 2015 The Southern Region Section 2-3 North 2015 Conclave will be hosted by the Nicha Achowalogen Lodge of the Golden Spread Council. The section is comprised of 10 Boy Scout councils located across North Texas, Southern Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Q: What is Conclave? A: Conclave is an annual activity involving three or more lodges in an established geographic area. Each conclave is led by section youth officers elected from among the member lodges at the previous year’s conclave, and the event itself is prepared in cooperation with various other lodge officers, and with one lodge serving as the “service lodge”. The SR-2-3 North Conclave is a gathering of over 400 Arrowmen that occurs once a year in April at a Boy Scout camp in our section. In short, it’s a great weekend of fun, training and fellowship! Q: Who should go to Conclave? A: Every OA member is welcome to attend. We want adults and youth to come — there are service opportunities and OA activities for everyone! Q: Why should I attend Conclave? A: Conclave is the biggest and best OA event of the lodge year! Conclave is a full weekend of events, fantastic training opportunities competitions, OA exhibits and patch trading, On top of all this, you’ll get to hang out with your friends and meet other brothers from all over our section. Q: What do I need to bring to Conclave? A: Be sure to bring a tent, sleeping bag, insect repellent, money (for the trading post), patches (for trading), rain gear, flash light, your full uniform and sash, and anything else that might make your stay more comfortable. Be prepared to have an awesome weekend! Food and fun is provided in abundance. H I G H P L A I N S E A G L E S C O U T A S S O C I AT I O N S C H O L O R S H I P The High Plains Eagle Scout Association is offering a scholarship to those Eagle Scouts who qualify. The requirements are as follows: 1. Have been granted the Eagle Scout rank, or have verified that their application for Eagle Scout rank has been received at the national office. 2. Submit applications to the Scout Service Center postmarked after October 3 but no later than November 28 and received by December 5 to be considered. The official deadline is December 5. 3. Be a graduating high school senior entering college in the year a scholarship is applied for. Scholarships are awarded only to those who graduate from high school in the calendar year in which scholarships are presented. Exceptions: (a) those Scouts whose Eagle Scout boards of review are held after December 1 of the current application year and of their high school graduating year may apply in the following year. (b) Eagle Scouts who are participating in mission work or military service beginning immediately after high school graduation may apply after the completion of service. 4. Have demonstrated leadership ability in Scouting and a strong record of participation in activities outside of Scouting. 5. Letters of Recommendation: Provide one signed recommendation letter from a volunteer or professional scout leader who knows the applicant personally. Provide one signed recommendation letter from a non-scouting adult, such as a teacher, counselor, or clergyman. This letter should not be from any person related to the Eagle Scout. 6. All applications should be accompanied with a current picture of the Eagle Scout. In this edition, we are featuring our Scout Shop Manager, Heidi Anuszkiewicz Hello, I’m Heidi Anuszkiewicz and I am your Scout Shop Manager. I moved to Amarillo, Texas, from San Jose, California, and am of American Indian decent. My tribe name is Mishewal Wappo. I have been happily married for 14 years to Tyson Anuszkiewicz and we have 1 dog and 2 cats. I love adventures and love working on old classic cars and trucks. I like to snowboard, camp and hike. I also enjoy boating, scuba diving, surfing, traveling to other countries and most of all, being with my family. My husband is a huge Dallas Cowboy fan and I’m a huge 49ers fan. I spend my free time with my husband, mom, nephew, and my 2 sisters I’m very excited to have the privilege to be working with Kathy in the Scout Shop. My adventure with Scouting started with my nephew Ethan when he invited me to one of his Cub Scout ceremonies when he was a Tiger Cub. I had so much fun I was asked to be a Tiger Den Leader and accepted. I was part of the pack until he crossed over to Troop 89. I’m now a member of Troop 89 and am having a great time learning about different adventures for each rank. This will help me to serve you better as I have a better understanding of your needs as a leader. Stop by next time you’re in the area as I would love to meet you and hear all about your Scouting adventures! W H AT IS C . O . P. E . ? Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience (C.O.P.E.) is a great opportunity for local Boy Scout Troops, Venturing Crews, and Explorer Posts to participate in. Located at Camp Don Harrington, the council has one of the best courses around and it’s available for you to reserve. The course is set up to help participants communicate better with each other, promote teamwork, and have fun. The various low course elements help develop communication skills and team building while the high course builds confidence and self-esteem. Cost for Scout groups is just $20 per participant and is open for adults as well as Scouts. We have two C.O.P.E Certified Directors and several facilitators who will guide you through the elements, check for safety at all times, and provide guidance as needed. We also offer the course to businesses, school groups, and other non-profits. The course is open year-round and is available for 1/2 day or full day adventures. Many of you have heard or read about the upcoming major changes to the Cub Scout Program. While true, there are significant changes to the program, remember that they don’t take effect until June 1, 2015. We will continue to use, until that time, the current Cub Scout program. In order to get you up to speed, we have put together a team of “experts” who went to Philmont this summer and attended training on this new program. They will lead the first of many trainings that will take place in the spring of 2015 for all leaders who want to know what is in store next year. The new program is easier, makes more sense to today’s boys, and makes leaders’ jobs simpler. They will make brief presentations about the upcoming changes at the December 6, 2014, Pow Wow. Be sure to register for the Pow Wow! 2 015 M E R I T B A D G E U N I V E R S I T Y All Boy Scouts are invited to participate in the January 24, 2015, Merit Badge University at West Texas A&M University. Each year our council and WT host this event whereby all Boy Scouts can begin working on a variety of merit badges. We offer several Eagle Scout required merit badges along with some new badges and, of course, the regular ones such as Law, Disability Awareness, and Fire Safety to name a few. This year we will again team up with the Fine Arts Department which will offer badges such as Pottery, Theater and others. Not leaving the adult leaders out, we will be offering classes for you as well! Scoutmaster Position Specific Training is an all-day class taught by your experienced peers and is only offered once a year so don’t miss out. This year, we will offer Youth Protection Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer (this class is limited and available to unit leaders who are planning on attending a BSA High Adventure Base in 2015) and a new class called “Life to Eagle Scout Project and Eagle Scout Rank Workbook Overview”. YOUTH INTRODUCTION TO LEADERSHIP SKILLS COURSE The purpose of the Introduction to Leadership Skills (ILS) course is to teach scouts with leadership positions about their new roles and how to most effectively reach success in that role. It is intended to help Boy Scouts in leadership positions within their troop understand their responsibilities and to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities. ILS is a prerequisite for Boy Scouts to participate in the more advanced leadership courses National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE). It is also required to participate in a Kodiak Challenge Trek. There are currently three trails that are available for your use. Trail “A” is mostly located on solid surfaces with some loose gravel and is 2.8 miles long. Trail “B” is moderately difficult and has some solid surfaces, loose gravel, steep hills, and sharp turns. This trail is just under 2 miles long. Trail “C” is the final trail and is difficult with rough gravel, uneven surfaces, and steep banks and is just under 1 mile in length. All three trails total 5.3 miles. Sounds easy? Well, we wouldn’t recommend any Cub Scout ride Trail “C” and only experienced Mt. Bikers should even attempt it! It’s rough and tough! If you are interested in this new adventure, call the Scout Service Center, reserve the trail, let us know if you need to borrow some or all 6 of our NEW mtn. bikes (you must supply and wear your own helmet). What is Pow Wow? This is advanced Cub Scout Leader Training that affords leaders the opportunity to learn more about the Cub Scout program that helps provide a better program for the Scouts! Pow Wow lessons are classroom-based instruction with some interactive activities such a Wood Carving and Cooking. You can learn about the new Cub Scout program being launched on June 1, get ideas on how to have exciting Blue and Gold Banquets, and/or how to be a better Den Leader and Cubmaster. There are many classes for you to pick from and you can see them at the council web site (click on Pow Wow to get more information and to register). Comment By Scott Richardson– Cubmaster Pack 10 and Trained at Philmont on Cub Scouts 2015: “You may have heard recently that there are improvements coming to the Cub Scout program in 2015. What you will experience as cub leaders is a program that will make planning much easier and streamlined. The boys will experience a program that aligns itself with the Boy Scout core principles and brings fun to den and pack meetings. The first chance you will get to learn of the exciting improvements will be at Pow Wow in December. I encourage you to attend this preview at Pow Wow and then a leadership training session later in the spring put on by the council.” REGISTRAR’S CORNER It is that time of the year again - new youth and adult applications, 2015 membership fees, and charter paperwork will soon be collected from every unit in the council. It is very important that your unit’s re-charter process is seamless, and of course, timely. To make the process easier, please check on the following items now: Are all leaders current on Youth Protection Training? Training is good for 2 years once completed. If they haven’t competed training or the training will expire between now and February 2015, they can go online to www.myscouting.org and complete it at their convenience. If you have a leader who has been working with your unit, please make sure he/she is registered. In Cub Scout Packs, Tiger Partners typically move up with their Scout to be a den leader. Tiger Partner is not a registered positon so if this adult is going to be a Den Leader, they must complete an adult application and submit the fee at recharter time. CUB SCOUT CAMPING COMMITTEE FORMING Recently, our council conducted a meeting with fourteen Cub Scout leaders to discuss the future of our council’s Cub Scout camping programs. These volunteers were members of packs, parents of scouts in the pack, board members, commissioners, and leaders of packs from around the council. They were briefed on the past several years of attendance, activities offered, dates, and locations of camps, along with other key facts. Their goal was to imagine what our Cub Scout camping should look like in 2015 and beyond. After two hours of great discussion and comments, the group formed a Cub Scout Camping Committee who will meet in the next few weeks to continue planning our camping program. We are very excited that these folks have the passion and the initiative to take this task on and make decisions that will get more scouts to camp. Scouts want to camp, they want to have fun, and we have the capability to fulfill our promise to them. This committee will develop the plan to make this happen! When every boy joins Scouting he is excited. He has thoughts of adventure in his head: camping, archery, the outdoors, and so on. There is an enthusiasm present – a spark of awesomeness that we must nurture. One way to help further that enthusiasm is to ensure that he earns his Bobcat within 6 weeks of joining. The requirements are simple – learn the Promise and Law, the handshake, and so on. Earning the Bobcat accomplishes several things: It begins to teach a boy to be goal oriented. It builds a boy’s self-esteem. It encourages the parent(s) to become involved. It encourages a boy’s imagination and enthusiasm. It helps the Pack with its Journey to Excellence score. Many Packs will host a Bobcat event early in the fall for new boys. Typically on a Saturday morning, the pack will have den leaders or other adults each host a station where one requirement is taught. As a boy works through the stations he earns his Bobcat – some packs even present the badge at the last station! (you could present the card formally to him at the next Pack Meeting) Other packs encourage parents to work directly with their sons and ask them to complete the requirements before the next den meeting. Regardless of how your pack handles it, setting an expectation that all boys earn their Bobcat within 6 weeks will increase the likelihood of the boy staying in Scouting. Units will still be able to choose the online recharter or a paper-based recharter and completed recharter paperwork is due in the Scout Service Center before December 31st to receive free rank advancements next year (the unit’s JTE form is also due by 12/31 for the free badges). What is changing is the amount of money that will be collected from members for BSA registration and Boys’ Life. Based on a survey conducted two years ago, unit leaders overwhelmingly requested that recharter due dates be extended from December 31st, to February 28th. This would allow the person handling recharter for each unit to have more time to collect applications, money, and so on. To accomplish this, we will have to collect an additional two months’ registration and Boys’ Life with this recharter so members (both youth and adult) can have their membership extended from 12/31/14 to 2/28/16 (instead of 12/31/15); this is a registration period of 14 months. The next recharter process will go back to 12 months; the collection of the extra two months is a one-time event to extend all units’ expiration dates to February. So, the bottom line is that for this year’s recharter, every member will need to pay $28 for BSA registration, $1 for insurance, and (optional but encouraged) $16 for Boys’ Life. The $40 unit liability insurance fee is unchanged. Recharter paperwork will be distributed at a variety of times & locations throughout the council. Each unit’s leader or Committee Chairman should identify who will handle their recharter and ensure that one of the meetings below is attended. As a parent, it is a good idea for you to be involved in his Scouting program. Ask the unit leader how you can help. There are many roles that need to be filled to make Scouting run smoothly and deliver the promise to the youth. Some jobs are year-round but many are short term roles like helping with a Pinewood Derby race or planning a Blue & Gold banquet. Your son’s leaders will appreciate your offer of help. It should occur about 45 days prior to the reregistration date. Who Attends? The following people should be invited to the charter renewal meeting: the unit commissioner, chartered organization head, chartered organization representative, pack/troop committee chairman and members, and all other pack/troop leaders. Who Is Responsible? Either the chartered organization representative or pack/troop committee chairman presides, unless the head of the chartered organization prefers to do so. The unit commissioner and pack committee members all have important parts in the meeting. What happens? The Charter Renewal materials explain the details of what should be included in the charter renewal meeting. The information below will give you a general idea of what to expect: Review of membership inventory and inspection. Review of unit operation, including membership, program, advancement, outdoor activities, training status of leaders, pack/troop budget plan, etc. Identification of pack/troop needs. Individual committee members may report on their specific areas of responsibility and make recommendations for improvement. Did the pack/troop qualify for the Journey to Excellence Award? Complete application for charter renewal. Make plans for the charter presentation ceremony. FILL IT OUT—DROP IT OFF! Our Council Service Center provides a computer printout for the annual rechartering of your unit. It includes information concerning your chartered organization, committee, leaders, and scouts. The rechartering application requires only that you cross out the names of individuals not reregistering and incorrect information. Write in the correct facts immediately below to update the information. Secure signatures (that of the organization head certifying all adults, the Committee Chair for Youth Protection Training certification, and that of the Cubmaster/Scoutmaster certifying the scout roster). Forward the application to the local council service center with the necessary fees. Additions to the unit roster are made by simply attaching registration applications for each new youth and adult member. Roundtable is a form of commissioner service and supplemental training for volunteers. The objectives of Roundtables are to provide leaders with program ideas; to update information on policy, events, and training opportunities; and to offer an opportunity to share experiences and enjoy fun and fellowship with other Scouting leaders. Roundtables inspire, motivate, and enable adults to provide a stronger program for their Scouts. There are typically separate sessions for Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Venturing leaders. The Cub Scout Roundtable provides information about the upcoming month’s planned program theme, while the Boy Scout and Venturing Roundtable sessions explore a particular activity or area of interest. In both sessions, leaders are encouraged to share their questions, their successes and their failures (usually the latter is the most instructive!). Helping you, the Scouting leader, is the sole purpose of Roundtable. Who should attend? Everybody! Roundtable is designed for all leaders – Scoutmasters, Cubmasters, Webelos Leaders, Committee Members, Assistant Scoutmasters, Den Leaders; every Scouting position has a place at Roundtable. Because Roundtable is by, for, and about YOU, every job is made easier by sharing the load, and Roundtable takes on the job of creating and presenting your program. Please be sure and mark on your paperwork where you will be picking up your popcorn. Leader Training We are working hard to create training opportunities in our district. We are in the process of setting up Scoutmaster Outdoor Leader Training, Webelos Outdoor Leader Training, and BALOO training. We also planning to offer Cub Scout Leader Specific Training for Den Leaders and Cubmasters at multiple sites throughout Lone Wolf District. If you have Cub Scout leaders that need Leader Specific Training, and can get a group together, let Shanda know and we will bring training to you! Dates will be set for these trainings soon, so watch for further information to be sent out. Youth Protection Training Many of the leaders in our district are nearing the 2 year expiration of their Youth Protection Training. Please check the status of your training and complete it again if it’s been close to two years. You will not be able to recharter your unit if your committee members haven’t completed Youth Protection Training within the last two years. Service Hours Has your unit completed any community service in the last year? This includes but is not limited to lake cleanup, Eagle Projects, Scouting for Food, as well as community service in your community. Roundtable is a form of supplemental training held monthly on a district basis. Roundtable provides Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders an opportunity to share ideas and activities with leaders from other units. It is a source of continuing information. Come be a S.T.A.R. (Scouter That Attends Roundtable) Steven, Joy, and myself, would like to remind everyone that the District Committee and Roundtable is open to anyone that would like to attend. Scouting is about Volunteers and the great things they do. We are always looking for new Unit Commissioners and other specific Committee Members. Come and help or just come and have fun! This year will be a great year of new beginnings and opportunities. The Key 3 looks forward to seeing everyone in October and November. GE District Flag Retirement Ceremony When the United States flag (Old Glory) becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be "retired" with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation's flag. Troop 735, in Hereford, performed a beautiful flag retirement ceremony last weekend (see picture). The troop retired more than 100 flags, and Jim Scott sang taps. Hopefully your Scouting unit has already gotten a weekend camp under its belt with many more planned in the coming months. As we welcome our new Scouts and families into Scouting it’s helpful to remember that they may be unfamiliar with the outdoors and camping. Let’s help them have great time – do they need to borrow any equipment? Also, with the new program year underway it’s time to ensure that our new Scouts have earned their first rank advancement – the Bobcat Badge and the Boy Scout badge for new Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. We’ve seen over the years that a boy earning that first rank advancement within 6 weeks of joining helps keep him in Scouting. Each badge has just a few requirements – all can be completed in a few hours. Some Packs and Troops like to set up a ‘round robin’ style event on a fall Saturday where new boys can earn this important first step to being a Scout. One other item I’d like to mention is training. According to our training records just 28% of our leaders have completed BSA training for the position they currently hold. I encourage every leader to complete training at myscouting.org; parents should ask their sons’ leaders if they are current in their training. And any unit or leader that needs help getting trained can contact a member of their district key 3 to arrange training.
