In Fairness
Dermo Science:
N
T
he human body is made up of 55%-78%
water, so it’s important to keep ourselves
hydrated in order for us to function at
our maximum potential. Without even
exercising during the entire day, the
average body loses about 2.5 pints of water, which is why
we need to constantly hydrate our system.
Like a plant that needs regular watering, the body
has two ways of absorbing hydration—internally and
externally.
Internal Hydration
Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Avoid smoking and
consuming too much alcohol. Get 7-8 hours of sleep a day.
Keep a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Do these statements sound familiar? Time and again
you’d hear these adages from athletes, physicians, and even
your parents. They’re the tried-and-tested ways of keeping
the body hydrated.
The premise is basic: When you’re healthy and hydrated
on the inside, it emulates on the outside. People with
naturally glowing skin credit a combination of a good diet,
proper hydration, exercise, and healthy habits.
External Hydration
Whatever your skin type is, you need to worry about
keeping your skin moisturized. Did you know that even the
oiliest face could suffer from skin dehydration?
Keep in mind this daily skincare routine—cleanse, tone,
moisturize. Cleansing consists of two steps—removing
dirt and makeup with a makeup remover, and then
washing your face with a facial wash, scrub or cleanser
such as Celeteque Dermoscience Hydration
Facial Wash. For toning, place a few drops of facial
toner on a cotton ball and gently rub it all over
your face and neck. Most toners tend to be too
drying, so check for mild, non-comedogenic and
hypoallergenic variants that suit all skin types, such
as Celeteque Dermoscience Hydration Toner.
Lastly, dab moisturizer all over your face and neck.
4
ow that summer’s over, the rainy
season will definitely take its
toll on your golden beach tan.
However, nothing can be more
unattractive than a splotchy,
uneven color so it’s best to gradually lighten your
skin tone by a couple of notches in preparation
for cloudy months ahead. Plus, a paler skin tone is
better for the pre-holiday’s darker makeup colors,
so you’ll be sure to stay in style.
Good moisturizers contain Vitamin B12.
Vitacreme B12 is a cosmetic cream that
is formulated to deeply penetrate into
the skin, delivering essential ingredients
to renew skin cells, soften skin tissues and
rebalance the skin’s natural defense system
and vitality, ensuring a total skin hydration from
inside out.
When purchasing products for your face, choose
ingredients that cater to your skin type. For normal to
combination skin, use a water-based moisturizer with
a light, non-greasy feel. For dry or aging skin, choose a
heavier, oil-based product. For oily skin, go for light and
water-based. For sensitive skin, pick fragrance-free and
soothing ingredients.
Embracing Science
If you noticed the word Dermoscience a number of
times in this feature, don’t get intimidated. Coined by the
experts at Celeteque, Dermoscience is the combination
of new ingredients and technologies with dermatologistdeveloped solutions for specific beauty concerns.

The next time you purchase
a Celeteque Dermoscience item,
think of it as a gentle cosmetic made
by your trusted dermatologist. Their
products suit all skin types, and they
are made of hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic (a.k.a. non-occlusive
or non-blocking) ingredients.
Science doesn’t have to be scary!

Make sure that your skin tone stays consistently
luminous with the help of a couple of whitening
products. With the right items, your skin will be
bright and even—not a fake pasty-white. The key
is to look for products that use gentle whitening
ingredients to draw out a naturally lighter
complexion. Also, use skincare with SPF even
when the sun isn’t out. Not only will they help
prevent skin cancer, they’ll also keep wrinkles
and spots at bay.

Infused with caffeine to stimulate circulation in your eye area, this handy
roll-on lightens under eye circles and reduces puffiness. Tip: Store it in
the fridge and let the cooling sensation act as a refreshing pre-makeup
pick-me-up!
Think of this the way you would of your favorite BB Cream, only it’s
gentle enough for the sensitive eye area. Lemon essence and caffeine
stimulate and brighten your eye area for an added lift, while mineral
pigments instantly conceal dark circles. Can you say lifesaver?
Garnier Overnight White Peeling Cream
Skin-lightening Alpha Hyrdroxy Acid and lemon essence join forces
to reveal bright, evenly toned skin in this potent night cream. Dark
spots are visibly lightened in weeks; slather this on before you sleep for
radiant skin in the morning.
Pond’s White Beauty Naturals Exfoliating Facial Foam
This is your best bet if you want to speed up the
whitening process without using harsh chemicals that
could damage your skin. Made with Camelia Leaf
Extract from the Himalayas, the facial foam gently lifts
off dirt and excess oil to reveal a fresh complexion.
Pond’s White Beauty Naturals Day Cream
We love the light, non-sticky formula and built-in SPF
of this dermatologist-tested moisturizer that fades
blemish scars and leaves a pinkish-white glow on your
complexion. It’s easily absorbed into the skin, so it
works as a great makeup base too.

Beauty Bulletin
This month’s bulletin is all about your skin and body. Chec
k out
the latest developments on beauty from top to toe.
1.Handy Work
There’s a new way of guessing a woman’s age: Just look
at her hands. A girl’s youthful demeanor may give you the
impression that she’s fresh out of college, but her haggard
and sun-damaged hands will tell you otherwise. According
to new studies, the hands—and not the face—are often
the first parts to show the signs of aging.
4.Foot Fetish
Party
We pay so much attention to facial care that we tend
to take our hands for granted. They’re just as susceptible
to sun damage, wrinkles, dryness, and age spots, so we
need to take care of them. Wear gloves whenever you do
gardening or dirty housework. Before heading out, apply
sunscreen on your hands just as you would on your face.
Lastly, keep a hand cream handy and apply it generously
after washing your hands. Try Watsons H Bella Hand
Cream in Blackberry and Black Tea or Watsons
Bella Hand Cream in Strawberry and Cinnamon

What exercise has proven best fit for your
lifestyle?
To be quite honest, I’m not really a health buff. Even as
a kid, I wasn’t into sports or what, but now that I’m getting
older, it’s a conscious effort to stay fit. It’s not really for
appearance, rather for the sake of living healthily.
When I get around to it, I do Ashtanga Yoga*, but I don’t
have a set schedule. As much as I can, I push myself to go.
Any special diet you’re on?
It’s not so much a diet as a habit.
I’m a snacker. I don’t have big meals 3
times a day. Instead I have little snacks
along the way. I find that portion control
is better for me than a regimen per se.
It keeps me fuller longer without feeling
bloated or too full from a big meal.
I’m not personally a vegetarian or
vegan, but I like Pipino’s lemon grass
tofu skewers. It’s not heavy, yet it makes
you feel satisfied. When I’m at home,
I sometimes whip up little snacks like
mangoes and cottage cheese. I like the
salty-sweet fix.

What’s a typical day for you?
Weekdays, I’m mostly a preschool
teacher. I wake up at 5am, get ready for
class, then in the afternoon I’m done with work. Sometimes I
have hosting/modelling stints in the evenings.
How about weekends, how are they different
from the weekdays?
EXCLUSIVELY AT
During the weekends, that’s where hosting events usually
fall. These gigs are mostly in the evenings so during the
daytime, I get as much rest as I can, also because the week is
really hectic. I sometimes relax by having a DVD marathon or
just hang out with friends and family.
When I say “vacation”, what comes to mind?
I love travelling! In fact, I have a personal goal to match
the number of countries I travel to, to my current age. So
that totals 28 so far. For me it’s a form of education and self
improvement. It’s about discovering something new. I find
that I try to detach myself from everything that’s ordinary— I
try to get out of my comfort zone. I challenge myself. Like,
as much as I can, I really set a budget for my travels. It brings
out the survival instinct in me. I become more creative.**
When you get home from a day’s work, what’s
the first thing you do?
I usually hydrate as soon as I get home. My skin feels
really tired or tight when I don’t get enough of it in my system.
It really shows on my face, all over, so I like keeping myself
hydrated.
What’s one thing you can’t live without?
Moisturizer. Like I said, my skin tends to get really dry, so
aside from hydrating with water, I have to make sure I carry
around a moisturizer in my bag. I really prefer to keep my
skin fresh and clean by not having too much makeup on. The
more natural, I think, is really better.
* This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles
and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind (http://www.ashtanga.com).

The Habits
These skin-saving routines may take some getting used to, but you’ll be thankful
you started them
SLEEP WITH CLEAN SKIN
1
2
8
The biggest skin sin? Sleeping with your makeup on! Don’t forget
to remove every trace before you hit the sheets. Even men should
remember to cleanse, tone and moisturize every morning and night.
We recommend Olay Total Effects Cleanser and Neutrogena
Alcohol Free Toner.
MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE,
MOISTURIZE
3
AN OUNCE OF
PREVENTION
Keeping track of small things will save you from spending
unnecessarily in the future. A weekly pore strip may not replace
a regular facial at your dermatologist, but it’ll help prevent more
pimples from cropping up, while a daily dose of sunscreen could save
your skin from more serious issues years from now. Try Watsons Men
Nose Pore Pack and Belo Essentials SunExpert Sunblock in SPF40
or 60. To prevent your complexion from turning dull and grayish, use the
Beauty Buffet Vitamin C and Neroli Facial Mask on a weekly basis.
4
BODY AND
SOLE
People tend to forget to pamper their feet, so treat yourself to a
weekly soak or foot spa if you can. Even gents should go for regular
pedicures to keep their toenails neat. Before wearing shoes, dust on
som Deonat Mineral Deodorant Foot Powder.
5
IT’S IN THE
DETAILS
What do women like in men? A good, clean scent and kissable lips.
Before stepping out for a date, spritz yourself with cologne (like
Adidas Pure Game EDT Natural Spray) and slick on some lip balm to
prevent unsightly chapped lips—or better yet, do it on a regular basis
to keep your lips soft all the time. We like Mentholatum Lip Balm
and Men's Cool Aqua. Bright eyes also attract women, so make it a
habit to moisturize your eye area with a soothing formula like L’Oreal
Men Expert Eye Roll-On and have no need for manly makeup (aka
concealer—yes, we can tell if you have it on).
EXCLUSIVELY AT
It doesn’t matter if you have oily skin—not applying moisturizer will
actually cause your skin to overcompensate, which will result in more oil.
You must moisturize your skin daily, whether it’s patting on face cream at
night or slathering lotion on your legs. Getting into this particular habit
will save you from wrinkles and sagging skin in the future. Too much
shine on your face? Try Clean and Clear Oil Control Blotter, ,or a
dusting of blotting powder for ladies. We love L’Oreal Face, Contours
and Neck Minutes Lifting Effect and L’Oreal Spot & Wrinkle
Corrector.

Lip Service
Fashion and beauty bloggers share what
they love about their lippies
“Despite its supposed cult following,
I was still hesitant to try out Lip Ice
as it seemed too good to be true—
inexpensive, new in the market, and
easily accessible. After a few glowing
recommendations from good friend, I
decided to give the lippie a try. Now, I
finally get the hype! It moisturizes my lips
for hours, and the self-adjusting color
gives me the most natural and flattering
shade. I swear by it; in fact, it has taken
the place of my everyday glosses!” –
Dominique Tiu, www.konichiwear.com
“Before Lip Ice became available in the
Philippines, I always had to stock up during my Hong
Kong trips so I was overjoyed when I found out that
it was readily available in all Watsons Stores. My top
picks are Strawberry and Blackcurrant. Whenever
I have this in my makeup bag, I don't suffer
from chapped or dry lips because it keeps them
moisturized throughout the day without having to
re-apply it every other minute. The SPF also protects
my lips from the harmful rays of the sun. The price
is pretty affordable, so if you can't decide which
flavor to get, you might as well get all. My favorite
Lip Ice product would be Sheer Color in Strawberry.
It comes in a sleek and sexy tube which makes
applying it mvore fun. I love the light pink tint which
brings out my lips without making me look too made
up on a normal day. The best thing about Lip Ice
products is the cooling sensation you get after every
swipe. I'm so glad it's now available locally so I don't
have to wait for my next Hong Kong trip just to get
my hands on these babies!”

The problem: Super-dry skin
The culprit: Dehydration. Several factors
could be sucking the moisture out of your
skin. It could be the lack of fluids (so drink
eight glasses of water a day!), overexposure
to air-conditioning, smoking, and stress,
among others.
The solution: Load up on water
and juice and make sure to
slather on lotion right after a
shower to seal in the moisture.
Try Nivea Express Hydration
Body Lotion or Neutrogena
Hydro Boost Essence for your
face.
The problem: Dark spots
The culprit: UV exposure, excess melanin
The solution: Wear sunscreen all the time,
especially when you’re outdoors or driving.
Too late for that? Try an intense serum that’ll
help lighten specific spots on your face, or a
gentle whitening lotion for a more even color.
We like Nivea Extra Whitening Inner Cell
Body Milk.
The problem: Rough patches
The culprit: Uneven oil deposits
The solution: Exfoliate your skin to properly
distribute your skin products. Also, use an
intense moisturizing line for an extra boost
of softness to your skin. Try the Neutrogena
Hydro Boost regimen. We particularly
recommend the Neutrogena Hydro Boost
Water Gel and Hydro Boost Mask, which
increase the skin’s moisture level by 14 times.
The problem: Sagging skin
The culprit: Losing a large amount of weight
in a short period of time; age.
The solution: Exercise and apply a firming
lotion to help tone your skin and make it
more supple. We recommend Nivea My
Effect My Silhouette Gel Cream.
The problem: Cellulite
The culprit: Unfortunately,
it’s hereditary and can’t be
banished completely, as even

THE ART OF
TRAVELING
&SHAVING
Ever noticed that male jetsetters and
backpackers often sport five o’ clock shadows
while traveling? It’s common for men to have a
difficult time grooming themselves while on the
go because of a number of travel constrictions.
But don’t fret, guys! You no longer have to
deprive yourself of an enjoyable wet shave
while traveling, thanks to these savvy tips from
international travelers.
Buy disposable razors from reputable brands.
The best kinds are the double or triple razors
with built-in lubricating strips. Try the Gilette
Razor and Shaving Foam.
If you don’t like disposable razors, look
for a travel-sized
safety razor that
disassembles and
can be stored
conveniently in
a small leather
pouch to keep it
from spilling into
your luggage.
Pack your
razor blades into
your checkedin baggage
because airport
guidelines will
only allow you
to carry-on
your razor if
the blades are
not included. If
you really need to
18
store it in your carry-on, just leave the blades at
home and purchase a pack of blades when you
arrive at your destination.
If you’re the type who uses a shaving brush,
pack it in a durable container to keep it from
being damaged because your luggage will surely
be tossed around by airport baggage handlers.
Bring your own creams. The free products
in hotel rooms are usually made of cheap
ingredients, so it won’t give you that clean,
smooth shave that you’re used to. Try Nivea
for Men Post Shave Anti-irritation Extreme
Comfort, Nivea for Men Active 3 Shower
Gel, Nivea for Men 2-in-1 Wash, Shave Gel,
and Nivea for Men Anti-ageing Q10 Facial
Foam.
If the containers of your shaving creams
are too big and bulky to pack, buy travel-sized
reusable bottles and fill it up with your favorite
products.
STEP INTO THE
MEN'S ZONE
G
one are the days when vanity was
limited to just girls. Beauty brands
all over the world have come up
with skincare products that are
made especially for men. Watsons
was among the first brands to cater to men’s
skincare. In 2008, they established Men’s Zone,
an area in Watsons' outlets devoted to products
just for men, including Watsons own skincare line
called Watsons Men.
“Whenever my girlfriend shops in Watsons, I’d
usually wait outside or come back for her after an
hour,” shares Anton, 28, pilot. “Then one day she
told me that they started selling products for guys.
Eventually I found myself shopping at Watsons
with her. Sometimes I even stay longer at the
store and she makes fun of me for it!” he candidly
narrates.
Guys used to be shy to admit that they’re into
skincare and vanity, but now it’s more socially
accepted and even highly encouraged. “When I
was younger, I would use my sister’s facial wash
whenever I’m in our bathroom,” shares Jake, 21,
student. “ Then one day she realized that I finished
her tube, so she told me to start buying my own.
I went to Watsons and saw the Men’s Zone and
started buying men’s products there.
“I think it’s great that guys are more concerned
about their skin and wellness,” says Kate
Alvarez, writer. “Being vain doesn’t challenge
a guy’s macho image. In fact, many girls like it
when a guy is concerned about his hygiene and
skincare.”
According to The Independent, men are
giving women a run for their money when it
comes to spending on looking good. Through
the years, men have become more concerned
about looking younger, more fit, and more
polished. Men’s skincare has definitely stepped up
in the business industry.

It takes some work to
look good, but a man’s
gotta do what a man’s
gotta do. Here’s a topto-toe guide.
FACE
Go by the basic golden rule: cleanse, tone, moisturize. On an
everyday basis, you don’t need much more than that lest you
be accused of suddenly losing your Y hormone. Go for multitasking products that will keep your manly arsenal trim, like facial
wash that can double as shaving cream, or moisturizing body lotion
with whitening ingredients that will help even out your skin tone—
the best accessory a man can have. Vaseline Facial Cleanser,
Master Toner and Vaseline Anti-spot Whitening.”

HAIR
It’s a little-known fact that many dudes spend just as much
time (or even more) than some women do on their hair.
After all, short styles do require more maintenance than long
manes. Keep your locks in place with a product that allows you
to style it as you like: wax for a matte, natural hold; gel for a
strong, wet finish; serums for some gloss; and mousse or a light
spray for more creative ‘dos. Try Amby Hex Energy Gum with
easy wash-off formulation. What’s important though is to rid
your crowning glory of gunk and styling product residues by
cleaning it regularly. We recommend: Clear Shampoo.

Ladies love a man who smells good. If you can find one that
suits you, select a fragrance that also comes in a shower gel,
soap or light lotion, so you can layer
the scent and keep your girl on her
toes. Note, however that scents
and fragrances are just a matter of
preference. Body
odor is kept at
bay with the right
deodorants or antiperspirants, a clean
body and the right

I clean my face every night but I can’t seem to thoroughly
remove my makeup. Sometimes I can still see eye makeup
residue when I wake up the next day. It even stains my pillows! Any tips on thoroughly removing heavy makeup?
-Karen, 21

Removing foundation and blush is the easy part. All you have to do
is put makeup remover on a cottonball and gently wipe (not tug) it all
over the face to remove the makeup and dirt. The hard part is removing
eye makeup, especially if you used waterproof mascara. Here’s a great
technique: dab makeup remover on a square cotton pad, then press it on
your eyelids and lashes to allow the product to soak in. When it’s soaked
with makeup remover, gently wipe the cotton pad across the eyes to
remove the makeup. Make sure you use a gentle makeup remover so you
won’t irritate your eyes. Try the Dove Makeup Remover which is made
with gentle ingredients that won’t sting your eyes. Don’t forget to wash,
tone and cleanse after.
I thought my acne problem would go away after my teenage
years. I’m now 22 and I still break out! Help! What can I do to
get rid of my zits?
–Jessica, 22
Adult acne is more common than people think. According to acne.
org, 25% of adult men and 50% of adult women get acne. The best
treatments recommended by dermatologists are products that contain
benzoyl peroxide. Try Proactive, which is used by celebrities such
as Katy Perry and Avril Lavigne. You can also use pimple-targeting
products into your cleanse-tone-moisturize regimen. Try Glamworks

Anti-Acne Gel, Renew cleansers and exfoliants, Purederm
Acne Wash Cleansing Tissues, and Purederm Spot Reducer
Gel Patches. If all else fails, visit your dermatologist to see if there
are other underlying problems. A mild cleanser for daily use can help
prevent acne and regulate a healthier skin renewal. Invest on Cetaphil
Cleanser. Sometimes, acne too is caused by bacteria sitting on the
oil gland’s overproduction of oil. Make sure you pat off excess oil with
Clean & Clear Oil Control Film every so often.

We gathered this month’s most
pressing questions from our readers
and asked our beauty expert to dish
out advice.
I work in a call center, so my
schedule is erratic. How do I get rid
of the dark circles under my eyes
even if I don’t get enough sleep?
–Melanie, 25
: There are lots of eye creams that can
help you. If you want an affordable,
daily-use product, try Garnier Light
Brightening Eye Roll On. If you’re
willing to splurge, use Eyliplex-2 Eye
Lift and Circle Reducer twice a day
for both instant and long term benefits.
It’s also a good idea to eliminate
the possible underlying causes,
such as smoking, lack of sleep,
rapid weight loss, and vitamin
deficiency. If you really can’t
avoid long working hours, treat
yourself to eye pads, such
as Beauty Formulas
Cucumber Cooling Eye
Pads, at least twice a week.

I already spend so much on facials and acne
treatments, so I can’t afford to buy so many
beauty products for my face. Is there such
a thing as an all-in-one facial product for
people like me with sensitive skin?
-Kristine, 27
There’s a great product out in the market that’s
perfect for you, the Maybelline Clear Smooth
BB Cream. This blemish balm works as a light
moisturizer and concealer. It’s tinted, so it’s like
applying a light foundation on your face. This
oil-free and fragrance-free product is gentle
and safe to use while waiting for your acne and
other blemishes to clear up. It even has SPF26 to
protect you from the sun. Talk about an all-in-one
beauty product!
