The Great Lord Ganesha
By Samarth Margasahayam (7 yrs)
There is a great God who removes obstacles
He likes modaka and has a pet mooshika
He is called Ganesha Ganesha
He has a cool, cool Brother named Karthikeya
He has a pretty, pretty Mother named Parvati
He has a great, great Father named Shiva
First his head got cut off but now he has a new
head
Ganesha got an Elephant head with a nice little
trunk on his face
This poem is about Lord Ganesha

That ride that
changed
me
As the roller-coaster went zooming down the track, I thought, "Will I
Mira Desai
live through this?"
My family and my aunt were standing in an amusement park in India. We were
looking for a ride to go on, when all of a sudden, my dad took my hand and pointed
to a tall roller-coaster in the park. I was horrified. You see, I had never been on a
roller-coaster and was very scared of fast rides. He knew that! How did he think I
could do it? He convinced me for a long time, and said it would not be terrifying. My
brother, dad and I would go together. I was sure I would definitely faint in the
middle of the ride. My dad tried to soothe me. Very reluctantly , I went along. In
line, I felt like I would have a meltdown. WHY did I agree?
It was our turn to go and I was trembling with fear. When we got in our cart, I
clutched my dad and squeezed my eyes shut. Once the ride started, I couldn't
breathe. We were going slowly but I knew it would get worse. Then, BAM! It went
racing down the track. I screamed for my life and opened my eyes. Cool air was
filling my lungs. I was enjoying it! I was now screaming in excitement!
After the first time, I went on it SIX more times. I wanted to experience the
thrill of this ride over and over again. My dad didn't have to convince me. Now I
look forward to going on a lot more roller-coasters........maybe!

I'm from Bengaluru,
Nishant Udupa
With those bustling streets and food stands,
Selling pani puri, bhel puri and all those lovely dishes that give you so much joy,
Auto rickshaws everywhere,
Going down to Vidhyarthi Bhavan and Adiga's,
MG Road, Ashoka Pillar, and Jayanagar 4th Block,
I'm from my long car rides,
From the yummy Dosas my mother makes,
I'm from old memories,
In which some are brave enough to stay in my brain,
And some are so shy, they fade away,
I am from the many parks, museums, theaters,
Boats, planes and vans I've been in,
The trips come and go just as the months pass.
I'm from my friends, old, new, and present,
I'm from my parents, who love me so,
And don't forget my sister, that naughty little girl.
I'm from San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York,
Florida, Arkansas, Arizona, Hawaii, Oregon, Canada,
Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., New Orleans, and Missouri,
All the places I have been to.
I'm from Austin, my home now.
I'm from my thoughts, memories, and dreams that I love.
Above all, I'm a ‘bindaas’ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗ !!

Success
Do you ever wonder what the key is to a successful life? I
Anushka
believe that self-confidence and work ethic are the most
important ingredients for the recipe of a successful life.
Building self-confidence can help motivate you to do things. For
example, Martin Luther King Jr. used self- confidence to stop
segregation between white people and black people. If he hadn’t sprinkled some
self-confidence to his dish of success, he wouldn’t have accomplished his goal.
When an austere person demanded Rosa Parks to get out of her seat on the bus
for a white person, she didn’t tolerate it. She added a dash of self-confidence and
stayed in her seat. Oprah Winfrey suffered from a terrible childhood, but,
instead of being a diffident, she used self-confidence to open her box of success
and make her what she is today. Self-confidence used its magic to make these
things happen, so that is why I believe self-confidence is important.
Noubad
Work ethic can help reach more opportunities in life. For example, Steve
Jobs worked hard on making his dish develop, which was the apple computer. He
quoted, “the only way to do great work is to love what you do”. Michael Jordan
would practice his dish, day and night, until he perfected it. Because of that, he is
famous for being an ethical athlete. Gabby Douglas worked her way through a
successful life by using the ingredient, work ethic, in her recipe. My mother is
liked by many others because of her cooking skills. She cooked her way to success,
by adding a hint of work ethic in each of her dishes and getting many
opportunities for cooking. Because of this, she works harder to accomplish
more of her goal.
If you want your dish to be as good as theirs’, the key is to put a big spoon
of self-confidence and work ethic for a yummy surprise!

P
ain flared up my arm and I gasped. I rolled around in agony,
Ashray Desai
moaning. What had I been thinking?
One sweltering fall afternoon, my friends Ryan, Albert, and I
were lazing about in Ryan's backyard. We were dead bored. For
the thirty-fifth time in the last five minutes, Ryan inquired, "So what should we do?"
Wearily, I suggested we play tag. To my surprise, they both consented. That showed
how desperate we were.
After Albert was selected to be "it", he began to count. Adrenaline pulsing
through my veins, I bolted away. I sprinted into Albert's backyard, splitting up with
Ryan. Soon, I heard Albert follow me into the backyard. I was cornered. Albert
grinned mischievously as he approached me, enjoying the experience. However, I
wasn't going to be caught so quickly. I had a trick up my sleeve. Whirling around, I
clambered up the fence before Albert could run up and tag me. I vaulted over the top
of the fence with a triumphant cackle.
My joy, however, didn't last. What happened next was most unexpected. I felt
my pants snag on the top of the fence, and I came crashing down on the other side.
Pain shot up my arm. I saw brightly colored spots as I clutched my wrist and writhed
in a ball. In a daze, I managed to pick myself up and stumbled home. The ground
seemed to shake beneath my feet.
My dad rushed me to the hospital. We found out that I had fractured my wrist
in the fall. They put my arm in a cast and sent us home. It was a lesson learned the
hard way. I should be more cautious while climbing fences, or never climb fences, if
my mom had her way. Upon returning to the street, I received a mock smug grin from
Albert, and a pat on the back. The experience also taught me that I should always wear
shorts for fence-climbing. This earned me a pretend disapproving shake of the head
from Ryan, who was always in shorts.
I looked glumly at my cast, there to stay for six weeks. I was disappointed to
think I would not be scaling fences again. For the next six weeks!

Tumble or
ಸಂಪಿಗೆ
Triumph
Adversity is one of the most essential aspects in developing an
individual’s character. It reveals whether an individual can use
adversity to help them flourish or be destroyed by it. The dangers
Aishwarya
and perils in an individual’s life should be lessons to be learned rather
Naubad
than discouragement from moving forward in life. Veronica Roth’s
well-known “Divergent” series and the based-on-a-true-story “Soul Surfer” film
both illustrate how individuals can develop optimistic natures to fight adversity.
Consider the main character, Tris Prior, in the “Divergent” series written
by Veronica Roth. In these dystopian novels, there are five factions – Dauntless,
Erudite, Amity, Abnegation, and Candor – in a society where people choose a
certain faction at the age of 16, survive to pass initiation to be considered a
member, must follow specific faction rules, and work their entire life on
remaining loyal to their factions while helping the society as a whole. Abnegation
born, Tris is interested in choosing a different faction as she feels she doesn’t
assimilate to the Abnegation faction. By choosing Dauntless, she is forced to
survive its enduring and difficult challenges in order to become a member. Even
thought she shed blood and jumped off tall buildings with no security, fighting
against other initiates for membership, adversity didn’t stop her from leading her
to her goal. Her fight for achievement displayed strength and tenacity in her
character rather than displaying weakness and apathy if she had chosen to give
up. The event of watching her parents die in front of her eyes to protect her
weakened her strength for a while, but Tris didn’t let this adversity get in the way
of helping her friends and herself survive the madness in her life. The death of
her parents helped her realized that she must learn to accept the misfortunes in
life because they are the truths. The truth cannot be changed and death can
happen at any moment. This adversity helped her be more open to acceptance
of new ideas and believe in her reality as well, as she learned her brother was a
traitor who imprisoned her by allying with her enemies. Although her brother
betrayed her, Tris learns to forgive and forget about his treasonous acts. This
shows Tris’ forgiving nature and compassionate nature, helping her fight against
adversity rather than being torn apart by her brother’s act. Overall, It’s clearly
Austin Kannada Sangha
25
Sampige
Volume 2014, Issue 1, April 2014
ಸಂಪಿಗೆ
shown how individuals like Tris can use their adversity to bring about strength to
endure, forgiveness of others, acceptance to reality to eliminate their fears in life,
and help others against their own hardships.
Similar to Tris of Veronica Roth’s stories, Bethany Hamilton is an
energetic character in the film “Soul Surfer”. Based on a true story of the actual
Bethany Hamilton in real life, the character that played Bethany was a surfer who
went through any measures just to go surf at the best shores. Unfortunately,
when she traveled to surf at a unique area, a shark attacked her and her arm was
bit off. In the beginning, Bethany was extremely upset about the event because
she couldn’t complete certain tasks similarly so she had to learn how to provide
for herself by using one arm. She was restricted on surfing for quite a long time
because her parents and doctor feared she might not be able to surf properly.
Although she had disadvantages and so many constraints, these adversities didn’t
stop her from surfing again. She tried prosthetic arms, practiced balancing on
land, and attempted other techniques to help her prepare for surfing again.
Overcoming her fear, living through some disadvantages, and winning a first
place title in a women’s division surfing contest, Bethany learned that even with
one arm she was no less than any other surfer. Her strength, positive attitude,
and determination were reflected in her character while going through her
hardships.
In conclusion, Bethany Hamilton from “Soul Surfer” and Tris Prior from
the “Divergent” series are two of the many examples how positive character is
revealed, allowing them to prosper in life because they chose to overcome
adversity. Adversity plays a massive role in an individual’s life, sharing and
developing a person’s personality. It’s an individual’s choice whether or not to
overcome it. Some may be completely broken, but many eventually overcome
adversity through determination for change or acceptance to reality.

A
Roadtrip
Along the Indian Coast
It has been a year since I made this roadtrip, but I loved it so
much that I had to share a few photos from my experience.
South-western coastal India has a very unique flavor and it blew
my breath away. We began our trip in Bangalore and headed
towards Udupi- a town famous for its temples and exquisite
south Indian food. We took a rikshaw towards Malpe beach
and made a boat trip to St.Mary’s Island-said to have been
Pooja Sukumar
named by Vasco de Gama on his initial journey to India. On
the island, we saw rectangular, columnar basaltic lava
formations which were millions of years old. The island and
the geology was breathtaking, but unfortunately, tourism has left heaps of trash all
over the island and in the ocean. It made me very sad to see this. India has so much
to offer to tourists but it is up to the people to maintain these wonders and keep the
environment clean.
On our trip, instead of staying at hotels, we explored home-stays to get a good
idea of the local food and culture. In one of the home stays, the owner showed us
traditional methods of local fishing and introduced us to his 3 day-old water buffalo
calf (SO CUTE!). I have never eaten better meen (fish) curry and fresh milk pudding
from the calf ’s mother in my life! One of the best parts about road trips is pulling
over enroute anywhere you please. We saw a sign for a cashew farm and decided to
scope it out. I have always wondered where these mysterious nuts come from and I
was shocked to learn that each nut goes thru an extensive process from cultivation
to packaging. Every cashew fruit only sprouts one nut…no wonder they are so
expensive! We purchased loads of sweet tasting cashews to bring back to America
but we actually ended eating most of them during our road trip! Too yummy! (I also
managed to purchase liquor made from the cashew fruits-I’ll just say that it has a
very ‘acquired’ taste).
Another memorable experience was visiting salt flats in the outskirts of
Gokarna. I finally got an opportunity to see how salt is made-from the containment
of ocean water all the way through the iodization process. In the scorching heat, I
saw laborers (mostly women!) working without shoes and safety precautions (OSHA
spoils us in America). They all had brought their children to work with them so I got
Austin Kannada Sangha

ಸಂಪಿಗೆ
to spend some time playing with their children around the flats! The flats have
raised embankments between salt cultivation quadrants, so running around felt like
navigating a maze. Gokarna is a beautiful town that caught me by surprise. Even as
a woman of Indian origin, I felt like a minority in India since there were so many
foreigners there to enjoy the sun and the sand. We visited the local spice market,
the quaint town and the famous Shiva temple rumored to be 1500 years old! We
traveled to OM beach, where the shore forms two adjacent bays looking like an
OM written in Hindi. The town and the beaches around this area definitely have a
“western hippie” feel, probably because of the abundance of tourists visiting.
Last but not least-spending Christmas time in Goa was an experience I will
never forget. The strong Catholic culture made the season all the more festive and
fun for us tourists. The abundance of Churches and Christmas decorations felt so
different from all the other parts of India that I have been to! I almost felt as if I
was in Europe! The beaches are to die for in Goa-I cannot wait to go back and
visit. I hope tourism doesn’t make them overly commercialized (I already see it
happening). My favorite edible treat was the Christmas Pudding available in local
Goan bakeries. It is a dense, moist, plum and rum cake that has dried fruits and
nuts mixed in. Yum!

Trudging through the once grand palace of concrete,
vines Sprouting this way and that
Cracks in the aged stone hiding the so called magnificence of this once great land
This civilization bit the dust
Thinking of a time where we lived only on the land,
Greenery surrounding us,
Only can we read in books.
For it is no more
We tried to shut it out
And now it behind to overtake
Like the vines cracking through the concrete ruins.
Let us embrace this!
Not shut it out
It is who we are..
Let us be at peace, like the monk, one with his surroundings
All the technology in the world means nothing...
If we sell ourselves out to attain it
Slowly the wilderness takes back over..
Until the ruins of concrete are no more,
Than sand and dust which crack and crumble beneath our feet
Waterfalls gush into ponds and lakes
As fish swim excitedly
Animals and humans living together
In our home, that is the wilderness
We are at peace again...
We are one..

The lonely gentleman of white
The sun rises
Blistering heat follows
Long brown stems
Grow colorful ends
Color is vanquished from delicate white from the heavens above
Children with cheeks like cherries
Create a man I'm the white.
Such a gentleman he is, waiting patiently for a mate.
Down he goes, melting in sorrowful sadness, alas his mate has not met his company.
Down he goes fleeing with the coming of the sun every day until he is no more.
Hope and Determination
When all is dark
And we feel lost
Coming front the deepest corner of our hearts
Like magnificent chariot bringing dawn to the pain and angst of the dark
More powerful than any fear
Yet smaller than any tear
Bestowed upon us when we admit to failure,"we cannot succeed" as he leers
This passionate force telling us, we are fine, and the end is near.

Oats Masala Rotti
Ingredients
Ragavendra
Sushma
Ravi
Rolled Quick Oats - 2 Cup
Oasis
Onion - 1 finely chopped
Green Chilli - 3-5 finely chopped (Adjust depending on how hot you require)
Spinach & Methi leaves - About 1 large bowl finely
chopped
Cilantro & Curry leaves - About 1 small bowl finely
chopped.
Jeera - ¼ tsps.
Salt - ½ tsps (Adjust according to taste)
Oil for frying.
Method
Dry roast the oats for few minutes and grind it into
coarse powder.
In a large mixing bowl, add all the ingredients and
mix it all together with little hot water to make very
soft dough.
Ragavendran Madhusudanan | August 1, 2009
Set a flat griddle and let it evenly heat for a few
minutes.
To make the rotti, you can cut a thin wet cotton
cloth and place it on a flat surface. Divide the dough
into large lemon size balls. Take a ball and press it
on to wet cloth to make rotti. Since the dough will
be very soft you will be able to press the rotti into
shape by using your palm. Make you palm wet with
water so that the dough does not stick to your palm.
No need of the roller.
Take the pressed rotti along with the wet cloth and
put it reverse on to the griddle so that the rotti is on
the griddle. Slowly remove the cloth.
Cook thoroughly both sides of rotti by adding few
drops of oil.
The rottis are so tasty by themselves. You can also
serve those with pickles, yogurt or any chutneys.
