May - Yard of the Month
School Year Ends May 21

Congratulations to this month’s winner of the
‘Yard of the Month’ award that goes to 5151 Halls
Ferry. The owner receives a $25 gift certificate to
Clegg’s Nursery, our gracious sponsor.
The last day of the school year for students is
Tuesday, May 21st. After that be on the look-out for
kids in the subdivision during what would have been
the normal 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM school day.
A number of churches in the area are sponsoring
summer camps so be mindful of that as you drive
past those, both in the neighborhood and the
surrounding area.
The fall semester of the 2013-14 school year
starts for students on Monday, August 12. Teachers
will be at school the previous Thursday and Friday
for in-service meetings and planning days.
Thanks to all of you who take pride in your
property. Keep up the great work! We’ll be judging
‘Yard of the Month’ nominations every month and
announcing the winner in Newswatch.

LSU Gymnastics Finishes Fifth in the
National Championship Meet
For only the third time in school history, the LSU
Gymnastics team advanced to the Super Six round of
the Collegiate National Championships.
The Tigers finished fifth in the final rankings,
with Rheagan Courville winning the National
Championship on vault.
As a team, Coach D-D Breaux’s Tigers earned 10
total All-America honors, including seven first-team
spots.
Rheagan Courville won first-team honors on
vault, floor and the all-around. Sarie Morrison won
first-team honors on vault and bars. Maliah Mathis
was first-team All-American on vault, and Randii
Wyrick won first-team status on bars.
Jessie Jordan earned second-team honors on floor
and the all-around while Lloimincia Hall won second
team honors in floor exercise.
LSU gymnastics meets are about the best bargain
in collegiate sports. The 2014 schedule is yet to be
announced.

Shenandoah Carnival Re-Scheduled
Usually held in March, the Shenandoah
Elementary Carnival was postponed due to the
almost constant soaking rains of the months of
January and February until the weekend of May 10th
thru 12th. The ground had grown too soft to support
the rides and trucks and foot traffic..
The Shenandoah Carnival Committee hopes to
have a fun and safe end of school celebration, all the
while helping the PTA raise money for the benefit of
Shenandoah students.
Carnival dates and times are as follow:
Friday, May 10th – 4PM to 9PM
Saturday, May 11th – 11AM to 9PM
Sunday, May 12th – 12 noon to 5PM
Fried fish dinners will be available on Friday
night, May 10th from 5:30PM to 7:30PM. Advance
tickets for the fish dinner and for $1.00 discounted
ride tickets are on sale now through the Shenandoah
PTA. On Friday, May 10th tickets will be available
in front of the school from 8AM to 12 noon.

Garage Sale for 2013 Mission Projects

A Garage Sale of items donated by church
members is planned for May 4, 2012. It will take
place in the Friendship Building from 7:00 am until
2:00 pm. Proceeds from the sale will go entirely to
support our Missions Projects for 2013.
Items you would like to donate can be brought to
the Friendship Building beginning Monday, April 29
through Thursday, May 2 between 8:00 am and 6:00
pm. They should be clean and in saleable condition.
In Kind Donation Receipts will be provided if
requested. Anything unsold will be given to a nonprofit charitable organization. In consideration of
the groups that use the Friendship Building we
cannot accept donations earlier than Monday, April
29th.
We will be selling take-out Jambalaya lunches
consisting of Jambalaya, green salad and a roll.
There will be advanced ticket sales and some walkup available. Serving will be from 9:30 until 1:00.
The Sno-Ball Stand, STAY Kool will have its
Grand Opening for the 2013 season the same day.
Start the summer off right with a snowball of your
favorite flavor.
What else could you want - great bargains, good
food and a Sno-Ball? Put May 4th on your calendar
NOW so you won't miss anything.

The real strength to the security of our
neighborhood lies with the people that live in it.
Each of you should know what kind of vehicle your
neighbor drives and when it is usually at the
residence. You will notice anything that is not
normal or if a strange vehicle or subject is in the
area. With that being said, let me illustrate two
scenarios:
Scenario 1: One of our officers pulls up to a
residence, responding to an alarm call from that
residence. The neighbor, who also happens to be the
key holder for the residence of the alarm, greets the
officer. The neighbor is beaming with pride when he
states that he had already checked the residence and
everything was locked up. The officer thanks the
neighbor, but then poses a question to the helpful
neighbor, "What would you have done if you had
encountered someone breaking into the residence or
was attempting to leave with some items from the
residence?
The reply was, "Good question".
Sce nario 2: A neighbor observes a vehicle
moving slowly down the street. The vehicle comes
back through and then backs into the driveway all the
way up to the empty carport. The driver exits the
vehicle and knocks on the door and when no one
answers he goes around to the back of the residence.
The neighbor then calls 911 and starts to feed this
information to the dispatcher, who is already
mobilizing responding units to the area. The
neighbor continues to feed information and the
responding units greet the suspect as he is pulling out
of the driveway where he is detained and ultimately
arrested for the burglary of the residence.
Both of these scenarios are very real and both

occur on a regular basis. If you observe suspicious
activity, do not try to resolve it yourself. Maintain
your level of safety and get the information to the
proper authorities so they can investigate the
concern. The responding officers have the training
and equipment to handle the situation, so allow them
to do their job. There is nothing in any of our
residences, outside of our family, that is worth
getting hurt over. Good information about what you
are seeing, coming from you to our dispatcher, is the
best thing we as officers can receive.
Remember, we need your eyes and ears to assist
us in our job. Report any suspicious activity to the
sheriffs office for investigation. Again, We do not
need you to get personally involved, let the
responding units do that. Giving us good information
will be the best help that you can give when you
observe something out of the ordinary.

Meeting called to order at 7:00 P.M. by President
Henry Grace. A quorum was present
Secretary Report – Diana Martin - move to
accept minutes as printed in the Newswatch
Newsletter. With no corrections, motion to approve
was made by Chester Welch and seconded by Paul
Berniard. Motion carried.
Treasurers Report – Mike Bass – Membership
dues are now due. Number of members is down
from last year. Now have 183 members. In 2012 at
this time, there were 574 members.

Improvement District is a separate entity from the
Shenandoah Homeowners Association. Henry will
put an article in the Newswatch again to explain the
difference.
A letter will be sent to remind homeowners about
dues for membership in the Association and signs
will be put up at all entrances. A motion was made
by Henry Grace to have the signs printed and put out.
Motion carried with one opposed.
Security Report – Tom Hirschey – The patrols
for the neighbor continue to be consistent at 140

patrol hours and 4 hours of administration. For the
month of March, there were 144 traffic charges, 41
warnings issued, 169 traffic stops, and 16 vacation
checks. In the last two months there have been 18
arrests and 2 narcotics arrests.
On March 17th, a Woodlawn Baptist Church
function was held at the BREC Park and 17 illegal
parking violations were given. There was a matter of
public safety in that the cars blocked traffic where it
would have been difficult to get fire trucks through

in the case of a fire or emergency. A solution has
been discussed so this will not happen again.
Architecture Report – Henry Grace – A
resident on Ticonderoga addressed the Board on
building a 24’ by 24’ garage on the back of his
house. A permit has been issued. There will be no
plumbing or kitchen. Plans were approved and
motion carried.
The home on Appomattox with the former
apartment has been sold and this area will not be
used as an apartment.
Seven Pines residents are having trouble with
removing trees from behind homes that back up to
the Green Trails area. One policeman said it was ok
then another would not allow it. A Discussion will
be held with the Green Trails association to see if
something can be worked out.
Still have ongoing discussion with resident about
building on Stones River. This issue should be
resolved this month.
A resident complained about a home on
Sharpsburg with fence falling sown in back yard and
dogs going back and forth. The fence was reinstalled
and dogs no longer running free.
The issue on Gettysburg now 90% complete with
several vehicles off property. Citations were given.
Still have dogs barking off and on.
Legal Issues – Henry Grace – A letter was sent
to homeowner on Appomattox about the issue of the
rental apartment.
Question from a resident – Is there any restriction
on the time blue tarps can be on houses. This is not
in the bylaws but will be reviewed.
Beautification Report – Kevin McNicoll – The
yard of the month for May is 5151 Halls Ferry Drive.
Congratulations! They will receive a $25 gift
Certificate from Cleggs Nursery.
Old Business – Is there a schedule for the road
construction? The flag pole needs to be moved if it
is to be saved or reused.
New Business – There is a gap in the school
zone on Antioch where it goes from 20 mph to 30
mph then back to 20 mph. This causes confusion for
drivers. The speed zones changes because of a

make this zone a consistent speed? The sheriff’s
office assigns this. This will be discussed with them.
The next Shenandoah Crime Prevention and
Improvement District meeting will be held April
17th, 2013 at the Jones Creek Library.
Visitors to the meeting tonight included Boy
Scouts from Troop 230 – Woodlawn Baptist Church
and Troop 205 from Parkview Baptist Church.
All residents and interested parties are invited to
attend all monthly meetings.
