SWS - Sisters Who Swing Golf Association Newsletter April 2012 issue no. 12 www.swsgolfassoc.com GOLF SEASON 4 KICKS OFF WITH A LUNCHEON @ EMBASSY SUITES, CRYSTAL CITY, VIRGINIA APRIL 7, 2012 Members of SWS Golf Association and their guest kicked off the 2012 Golf Season with a luncheon at the Embassy Suites in Crystal City, VA. 42 women were in attendance for Fun, Friendship, Networking, Skill Development, Professional Achievement and Personal Growth among businesswomen...among friends. SWS Golf Association is the “Premier Women’s Golf Association” promoting the best interest in the game of golf, and advocacy for new golfers. SWS membership to date is over 70 women, both beginners, new, seasoned and gifted golfers. We have a format that will compliment your golf skills. Be sure to join us. Membership application and schedules can be found at our website: www.swsgolfassoc.com or find us at our Meet up site: www.meetup.com/Sisters-Who-Swing-Golf Association. GOLFER of THER YEAR 2010 M. June Taylor How long have you been playing golf? I started playing four years ago. Joined SWS to meet and play with other women golfers. What made you take up golf? I had long desired since the 1990s to take-up the game. However, I did not know anyone during that time who I could relate to that played and would encourage me. But one day, four years ago, a friend asked me if I would be interested in signing-up to take golf lessons at our church (Ebenezer AME). Little did she know, that was a dream of mine. I was excited to finally know someone who was as eager to learn the game as I. This was the winter when we spoke about it and the golf ministry would not start their next session until spring. So I decided to take a 4-week intro beginner’s class through Maryland Park and Planning to determine if I would really enjoy the game. I did, in fact, by the end of the 3-months of golf lessons through my church, I was hooked. in order to master. Patience is something you’ll have to have or learn, since it takes most people years to develop low handy cap scores. Golf is a game you could play alone, no team required. However, it’s most enjoyed with others. It’s also a fun game. You don’t have to be athletically inclined to play. A non-contact sport, golf is a game where women can play together in fellowship, competition and get some exercise as well. A ‘gentlemen’s’ game, golf promotes social etiquette, style and fashion for which women tend to favor. Initially, golf was a man’s sport. However, with the evolution of women in sport, interest in golf has grown tremendously and it's women who have spawn that growth. I believe the culture of golf mesh well with the traditional aspects of women. There are a number of professional women golfers around the world who found golf an excellent fit to their lives. And for the many amateur golfers such as me, golf fits my lifestyle perfectly. What would you share with those who have not experienced the idea of playing the game of golf? That it’s fun and a great way to meet people who they would not necessarily meet otherwise. How golf courses can be some of the most beautiful scenic places to be on and that it houses some pretty good restaurants too. It’s a good form of exercise, 9 or 18-holes will give them a complete workout. They can play no matter the age. I’ve played with both young and older women-both with high handy caps and low caps. Golf would give them a since of accomplishment and pride since it's a sport not played by most. What would you like to share with women in golf? Share the joy of golf with other women and be generous with your knowledge and love of the game. What is your favorite course? Of the courses I’ve played, Enterprise Golf Course is my favorite. Although, there are a number of courses in the area I've not played so that could change. I've played golf in Florida, Atlantic City, South Carolina and Bermuda. All of which were very nice courses I would love to play again. What time of day do you prefer to play? Mid-morning or early afternoon – not too early, not too late in the day. Golf can take up most of the day, so I prefer not teeing off too late. What is your opinion about the culture of golf and women? Golf is a mental game. Like a game of Chest, it requires a certain amount of thought and concentration 2 GOLFER of THER YEAR 2011 V. Nadine Daniel How long have you been playing golf? What made you take up golf? I have been playing golf approximately 3 ½ years. My younger brother, Kevin Williams, was an officer serving in the Navy when he took up golf. He encouraged me to do the same also. There were so many years apart in our ages - He was still in elementary school when I was leaving for college - that we really did not share a lot of similar activities growing up. I thought golf would be a great vehicle to create a closer bond, so I decided to go for it. The first year I decided to investigate the sport, I was so intimidated that I only went to the driving range and putting green. I finally gathered up the nerve to take a series of group lessons. It was during one of these lessons that Joy Wolfe, the Founder and President of Sisters Who Swing (SWS) came riding by in a golf cart. She stopped (probably noted that I desperately needed help!) and invited me to join SWS, a developmental golf association for women. She stated that SWS was designed for women like me who were beginners; and, that I would have the opportunity to also play with more experienced women golfers who would patiently help me to learn the game. For me, “patience” was an operative factor. I ran into Joy a few other times and she continued to be persuasive and encouraging. Although still skeptical, she finally broke me down, and I decided to attend a SWS clinic. Everything Joy told me was true – I discovered a wonderful sisterhood of women, where there is great camaraderie, and a willingness to share their love and knowledge for the game of golf - I have been a member ever since! What is your favorite course? What time of day do you prefer to play? I don’t have a favorite course yet per se. I hope that I have many courses ahead of me. In the beginning, I really loved the Red Course at East Potomac Park in D.C. It is an all 3-par course and flat. It is absolutely great for beginners. Now that I am a little more confident, I enjoy a course with greater challenges. However, I will admit that the Langston Golf Couse will always be near and dear because of its important, rich history to Black golf. Also, it is where I first began to learn the game! I am enthralled by the peaceful quietness and spiritual beauty of nature that exists on the course early in the morning. My favorite time to play is around 8:30 a.m. That time sometimes makes it hard to find partners. I am encouraged that SWS has added a few early morning play times to the 2012 schedule! What is your opinion about the culture of golf and women? I like the abundant opportunities that golf provides to women. It affords them to have, like their male counterparts, a platform to make business deals and to form rich, meaningful, and lasting relationships. The word empowerment is sometimes overused; however, golf does help to empower women in areas, of self-esteem, and instills an “I can do this” attitude that impacts life decisions and actions on and off the course. Also, women are teachers and nurturers by birthright. Learning the rules of golf and the etiquette of the course reinforces many of the important lessons we have already leaned and taught and that we need to continue to implement in our daily lives. Finally, golf is a wonderful, wonderful stress releaser that also allows one to be surrounded by the lovely gifts of nature – it is very spiritual. What would you share with those who have not experience the idea of playing the game of golf? I tell almost every woman I meet about SWS. My mantra, while not original, albeit, a little modified is, “Try it – You WILL like it”. What would you like to share with women in golf? Life is short, be good to yourself. Add leaning how to play golf to your bucket list. P.S. My brother Kevin and I do play now. The other day he stated he needed some tips from me!!! 3 SWS Golf Association welcomes the new General Manager at the Historical Langston Golf Course on April 16, 2012 Mr. Louis A. Tate. His earlier studies were in telecommunications before arriving into the golf environment, working at various courses both private and public links. Last April, Mr. Tate lost his wife to the disease Lupus. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. It was nice to share with Mr. Tate that this year’s Campaign for Cognizance Golf Tournament sponsored by SWS Golf Association and GBWBEC (Greater Baltimore Women’s Basketball Educational Coalition) will be golfing for Lupus as one of the Campaigns. Normally it takes nearly 20 years to become a General Manager. General Manager Positions were not opening up quickly in the Florida corridor, and when the opportunity was opened to work at the Historical Langston Course, he had to apply. Mr. Tate goal is to make the game of golf more enjoyable for you at Langston Golf Course. Next time you are at the course, snack bar or on the grounds, be sure and stop in and welcome the newest member to the Langston Family. He has an “Open Door” policy, he is happy to be here and he is here to help make each of our golfing experience more enjoyable at our home course, The Historical Langston Golf Course. You cannot use artificial means of measuring distances or conditions or to help you grip your club. Only your partner or caddy can give you advice. You may practice a swing during a play but not play a practice stroke. Match Play. In match play, the golfer whose ball is farther from the hole is played first. The winner of a hole is the first to go at the next hole. If you play out of turn, your opponent may have you replay. If you play the wrong ball, you lose the hole. Stroke Play. In stroke play, the golfer whose ball is farthest from the hole plays first. The golfer with the lowest score at a hole plays first (teeing off first is referring to as “your honor”) at the next hole, and there is no penalty for playing out of turn. If you play the wrong ball you get a two-stroke penalty. When teeing off, keep the ball between the tee markers. Your ball can either be even with the markers or up to two club lengths behind them. Play the ball where it lands. Unlike miniature golf, where a little nudge is generally accepted, you can’t move the ball in real golf. Similarly, you can’t change the course. Everything must remain as is. You can clean your ball during play when your ball is on the green/putting surface but you must put it back exactly where it was. You can’t test the surface by rolling the ball. If you hit your ball out of bounds, you’ll have to add a stroke penalty and replay the ball. If you suspect your ball is out of bounds or lost, play this ball (called a provisional) before leaving the tee-off area; this will save time, especially on a busy day. Maintain a good pace when playing. These are just some of the basic rules of golf. There are more, complex rules, which you will learn as you play. Don’t be afraid to ask your golfing partner or consider taking golf lessons to prepare yourself for the green.
