This month, we celebrate the “Fourth of July,”
with the traditional Bar Harbor parade; the
New England classic seafood picnic, including
lobster, and, the spectacular waterfront
fireworks display. It is a holiday that
commemorates the heart of summer, the
spirit of independence, and all that makes
America great, including our national parks!
1. Acadia National Park is the first national
park created entirely from private donations.
George B. Dorr and Charles W. Eliot, the
President of Harvard, were instrumental in
the creation of the park in 1916. John D.
Rockefeller later bequest 11,000 acres and
built over 40 miles of the infamous carriage
roads.
To celebrate Acadia National Park’s
Centennial this month, our July issue features
10 fun facts about our National Treasure. In
addition, we share our recipe for the classic
Maine Lobster Roll, as well as the not so
classic versions too. We also cover our
monthly Calendar of Events!
2. Currently, the park has just under 50,000
acres. It is one of the smallest national parks
in the United States. It is also one of the most
popular, attracting 3 million visitors annually.

Here are a few of the “fun facts” about
Acadia National Park that you might not
necessarily know.

3. In spite of its relatively small size, Acadia
National Park offers an abundance of
attractions from rocky beaches to wetlands to
spruce-fir forests & granite mountain peaks.
4. Cadillac Mountain, the park’s most famous
of 26 mountains, is named after French
explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur
de Cadillac. At 1,530 feet, it is also the tallest
mountain on the Atlantic coast. Between
early October and early March, it is the first
place that the sun rises in the eastern US.

5. Acadia National Park was initially known as
Sieur de Monts National Monument. In 1919,
its name was changed to Lafayette National
Park, in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, an
influential French supporter of the American
Revolution. It was renamed again in 1929 to
Acadia, in honor of the former French colony
of Acadia, which once occupied Maine.
6. In 1947, “The “Great Fire” of Mount Dessert
Island destroyed 10,000 acres of Acadia
National Park, including many of the fir and
spruce trees. The regrowth has created
greater diversity of plant life in Acadia with
Birch and Maple trees now being found there.
7. Acadia National Park has more than 120
miles of hiking trails – ranging from easy to
strenuous. So, there is something for
everyone. Two of my favorite trails are

8. The park has 40 different species of wildlife,
including chipmunks, white-tailed deer,
moose, black bears, beavers, bob cats,
bullfrogs, and Peregrine Falcons.

9. Once almost extinct and native to Acadia,
Peregrine Falcons are the fastest animals on
Earth. –diving through the air in pursuit of
prey at more than 200 miles per hour. In late
August through mid-October, approximately
2,500 raptors or birds of prey, including
Peregrine Falcons, fly over Cadillac Mountain
– making it a bird watchers’ paradise.
10. In 2015, Acadia National Park welcomed
roughly 3 million visitors, with most showingup between June and October. In contrast,
Mount Desert Island only has a year-round
population of 10,615 residents. This year,
given the Centennial, the park is expected to
draw a record number of visitors.
THE CLASSIC LOBSTER ROLL

One of the highlights of summer is the Fresh
Maine Lobster Roll, served with either mayo
Blueberry
or butter Muffins
(recipes below, Steps 1-3)!
Step 3 – As an alterntive to using mayonaise,
For those adventurous souls, the New
England Lobster Roll has gone “global” with a
variety of unique new twists! Try one of these
two modifications … and say “sabroso."
Version #1 – “The Californian” - Cilantro &
Avacado Lobster Roll – Mix 1 pound of fresh
Step 1 – Cut 1 pound of fresh cooked Maine
lobster meat into ½ inch pieces. Place in a
bowl. Chop 4 sticks of cold celery into medium
fine pieces Stir into the lobster meat, adding 1
1 ¼ cup Hellmann’s mayo (or mayo of choice)
– just enough to coat the lobster mixture.
Step 2 – As is traditional in Maine, fry the rolls
(6 top-sliced rolls, not side-sliced) in butter (4
Tbsp.) in a skillet or on a griddle. Remove from
skillet and, then, add lobster salad. Sprinkle
with paprika & chives (optional).

butter instead. Then, follow Step 2.

Greek yougurt, 1 Tbsp. Canola Oil, ½ Tbsp.
finely chopped cilantro leaves, & ¼ - ½ large
chopped avacado. Then, follow Step 2.
Version #2 – “The Baja” - Chipolte Lobster
Roll – Mix 1 pound of fresh cooked lobster
meat with ½ bunch chopped cilantro, ½
bunch chopped parsely, 1-2 Tbsp. mayo,
chipolte powder (to taste), 1 qtr. Lime &
lemon juice, & chopped red onion (to taste).
Then, follow Step 2.
