Editorial Contemporary issues from the network
Dear friends,
The second year of proposal-work addressing HORIZON 2020 calls started with very
intensive “SPIRE”-preparations, continued with NMBP, COST and Central Europe
applications and was then somehow concluded in late April with PHC and InnoSuppsubmissions. The BioNanoNet team supported our members with more than 15 proposals in the development and/or preparation of high quality proposals, in some the
BioNanoNet team has been asked to join the project as partner covering nanosafety
aspects and/or management.
As you might be aware, BioNanoNet has gained acceptance as a European key
player in the field of nano-safety, specialised in developing nano-safety-by-design
strategies together with researchers and industry. This “enabling” function, mainly
based on adding value by providing nano-safety strategies tailored to the needs of
the organisations, may pave the way for your project to be successful. Hence, your
scientific excellence will be the basis and hopefully our contribution will be the “tip on
the scale” to win the competition for European funding.
We really hope that you will be successful and receive funding for your excellent scientific ideas.
Additionally, we like to once again invite you to the “strategy workshop” 10 th – 11th of
September 2015, where the brain-storming and initiation of project ideas addressing
the new calls for 2016/2017 will be a key focus.

It is our pleasure to introduce you three new BioNanoNet employees!
Petra Zechner, BA
Executive Management
Since July 2014 Petra Zechner supports the CEO in the daily operative business and
acts as a communication interface, particular for the internal processes. Ms. Zechner
manages the duties related to the BioNanoNet Association tasks and has a responsible role in the organisation of strategic meetings and project related workshops.
After graduating “Health Management in Tourism” at the FH JOANNEUM - University
of Applied Science in 2011 Mrs. Zechner collected experiences acquired abroad and
worked in the marketing and project management field. From now on she assists in
the current project work, especially for the projects NanoDiode and R2R-Biofluidices.
In the future she will be in charge of the project MIOMI.

Secretary
After graduation in „hotel management” Doris Kaltenegger worked for the Austrian
Chamber of Commerce, Zurich, Switzerland. She has also worked for international
pharmaceutical companies such as Hafslund Nycomed Pharma and Eli Lilly Regional
Operations GmbH. Additionally, she has been employed at the Austrian Breast and
Colorectal Cancer Study Group (ABCSG). In all positions she was an assistant for
medical scientists and therapeutic teams.
Since March 16th, 2015 Doris Kaltenegger is part of our BioNanoNet team and is
working as secretary in our office.

The German Association of Nanotechnology (DV Nano) is a professional association
established for forces from the economy, science, media, education and politics, who
work in the field of nanotechnology. In this respect, nanotechnology is considered to
be interdisciplinary, combining experiences especially from the technological and scientific fields of activity in chemistry, physics, biology, medicine and materials sciences.
Operating as an independent organization, DV Nano represents the interests of its

Project R2R Biofluidics
Large scale micro-and nanofabrication technologies
for bioanalytical devices based on R2R imprinting
R2R Biofluidics declares war on hospital-acquired infections
Excessive use of antibiotics in human medicine but also in livestock breeding
has led to a dramatic increase of drug resistant bacteria in hospitals. Therefore, new and cost-effective tests for the early detection of antibiotic-resistant
bacteria are urgently needed. A large number of these tests has to be carried
out when developing new drugs to determine the effects of new substances in
an early stage of development. Therefore, JOANNEUM RESEARCH is coordinating the collaborative EU project “R2R Biofluidics” which utilizes mini-labs
made from micro- and nanostructured polymers to detect life-threatening bacteria swiftly and thus enables better targeted treatments.
Graz, April 2015: State-of-the-art micro- and nanotechnology will help to effectively
deal with dangerous resistant hospital germs. The focus is set on the rapid and costeffective detection of life-threatening bacteria, mostly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA for short. The basic problem of these drug-resistant germs
stems from the excessive use of antibiotics, not only in human medicine but also in
livestock breeding. MRSA bacteria can cause serious infections which can no longer
be effectively treated with most antibiotics. Approximately 30% of all people carry
certain MRSA-strains either on the skin or in the nose without triggering any symptoms in healthy individuals. However, in people with a weakened immune system, for
example in hospitalised patients, MRSA bacteria may very well lead to serious problems. A cost-effective test to detect MRSA is urgently needed because approximately
50,000 deaths per year are caused by this type of infection in the EU.

Medical device manufacturers in the in-vitro diagnostics sector are interested in micro- and nanostructured polymers for future bio-analytical equipment to detect such
life-threatening bacteria. These structured polymers could also be used for many
other diagnostic tests (lab-on-chip) by using cost-effective and large-scale production
processes. This specific challenge is the focus of the collaborative EU H2020 project
“R2R Biofluidics”, which is being coordinated by JOANNEUM RESEARCH and conducted jointly with nine other research and industry partners. “Biofluidics” in this context means the use of microfluidics (the science of behaviour of fluids in very small
volumes) for bio-analytical applications.
It is possible to manufacture highly cost-effective and large-scale sheets of flexible
polymer film with extremely precise structures on a micro- and nanoscale by using
roll-to-roll (R2R) printing technology. MATERIALS - The Institute for Surface Technologies and Photonics at JOANNEUM RESEARCH - has developed such a roll-toroll UV nanoimprint lithography unit, which is absolutely unique in Europe. The R2R
process which is similar to modern newspaper printing, allows large-scale production
of functional microfluidic structures, thus dramatically reducing the unit price.
In the “R2R Biofluidics” project, two demonstrators will be developed in the next four
years. First, an in-vitro diagnostic system to identify antibiotic-resistant bacteria will
be developed based on microfluidics and nanoimprint technologies. Microfluidics
makes these diagnostic tests very straight forward and fast. Besides that, additional
optical nanostructures will allow the detection of bacteria at much lower concentrations. A second demonstrator is targeting an in-vitro test method which is of considerable interest for the development of new active pharmaceutical substances in
drugs. Nerve cells will be fixed to a structured substrate and the modified surface is
used to induce a predefined and structured growth, thus allowing the precise determination of the effect of potential drugs on these immobilised cells.
The project network brings together SMEs, industry partners and research institutions. JOANNEUM RESEARCH MATERIALS is coordinating the EU project “R2R
Biofluidics”, which has been allocated a total budget of around 7.9 million euros.

Horizon 2020: The EU Programme for Research and Innovation
Almost 80 billion euros of funding will be available for research and innovation
at EU level between 2014 and 2020. The financing and funding forms range
from basic research to innovative product development. The key target groups
of Horizon 2020 include individual researchers, enterprises and collaborations
between science and industry.

“R2R Biofluidics” is a project (Innovation Action) under call NMP-04-2014:
High-definition printing of multifunctional materials. The H2020 project is coordinated by JOANNEUM RESEARCH (Austria).
In a first step, bionic surface technologies GmbH (Austria) will carry out
simulations of the fluidic microstructures, while JOANNEUM RESEARCH will
simulate the optical nanostructures. micro resist technology GmbH (Germany) will develop and produce special photoresists for nanoimprint lithography. The simulated structures will then be produced by the MATERIALS Institute for Surface Technologies and Photonics of JOANNEUM RESEARCH and
by Inmold Biosystems A/S (Denmark) using an R2R process. Fundacion
Tecnalia Research & Innovation (Spain) will mainly focus on the surface
modification and biofunctionalisation of the structured polymer surfaces. The
EV Group (Austria) will develop an R2R production facility to manufacture the
two demonstrators. BiFlow Systems GmbH (Germany) will be responsible
for additional processing steps in a pilot production line and the integration of
actuators (micropumps and valves). Greiner Bio-One Diagnostics GmbH
(Austria) and Innovative Technologies in Biological Systems S.L. (Spain)
will design and evaluate the diagnostic and cell test systems, respectively. BioNanoNet Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (Austria) will be responsible for

the administrative management of the project and for all safety relevant issues
related to nanotechnology.

The project was launched in February 2015 and will run for 4 years.

The “R2R Biofluidics” project aims to develop bioanalytical measuring instruments based on microfluidic and nanoimprint technologies using roll-to-roll
processes. The new devices will enable more precise measurements, lower
detection limits and more cost-effective analytical systems.

The MATERIALS Institute for Surface Technologies and Photonics of JOANNEUM RESEARCH has the only roll-to-roll pilot facility for UV and thermal
nanoimprint lithography in Europe.


R2R Biofluidics Kick-off-meeting
25th – 26th of February 2015, Graz and Weiz, Austria
R2R Biofluidics kick-off meeting was held in Graz and Weiz (Austria) at the JOANNEUM RESEARCH premises on 25th and 26th of February 2015.
This meeting allowed all partners of the consortium to establish good relationships
among them. All partners were provided with general information about the project
and about the administrative and management procedures that will be followed during project execution. Additionally, the partners had fruitful discussions about the
technical work to be carried out in each work package.
R2R Biofluidics kick-off meeting was the first step for a successful execution of the
R2R Biofluidics project.

Project “NexGenUpCon”
Austrian-Chinese Cooperative R&D Project:
NextGenUpcon - Next generation luminescence upconversion nanomaterials for
bioimaging with approved nanosafety by microfluidic cell assays
NextGenUpcon sets out to improve luminescence upconversion nanomaterials to
facilitate their wider application in energy systems, barcodes, diagnostics, and biomedical research. Rare earth doped upconversion luminescent nanomaterials
(UCNM) are new fluorescent materials and undergo anti-stokes emission processes,
where the long-wavelength pump sources (typically 980 nm or 808 nm) are upconverted to short-wavelength luminescence ranging from the deep-UV to the NearInfrared (NIR). This phenomenon makes UCNM attractive as spectral converters in
solar cells, invisible forgery-proof product quality labels, and background free detection in biomedical applications among others. State-of-the-Art luminescent upconversion nanomaterials are limited by unreproducible syntheses procedures, low upconversion efficiency, inappropriate surface functionalization and unknown toxicity effects. To overcome these limitations, alternative syntheses methods and surface
modification procedures will be established by Shanghai University to produce next
generation upconversion nanomaterials in larger quantities with improved optical
properties and better water solubility. These advanced UCNM will be tested for novel
sensor approaches including oxygen and pH imaging by the Shanghai University and
TU Graz, while the Austrian partners TU Graz, JR, AIT and kdg opticomp will jointly
develop advanced diagnostic microsystems suitable for single cell assays to assess
the toxicity of the new nanomaterials. The combination of microfluidics containing
hydrodynamic traps for single cell capture with integrated non-invasive optical biosensors capable of monitoring oxygen content and pH changes will lead to cutting
edge microfluidic live-cell arrays for medium and high throughput toxicity testing. Using additive printing technologies and rapid replica moulding technologies the project

will finally demonstrate the feasibility of industrial large-scale, continuous flow production of advanced lab-on-a-chip systems.

NanoDiode establishes a coordinated programme for dialogue and outreach in Europe and supports effective governance of nanotechnologies. Work package four –
EDUCATE – “Professionalise Education and Training” constitutes a programme for
nanotechnology education and training as part of the overall NanoDiode project. The
work package aims amongst others:
1. To build a robust education strategy
2. To carry out a series of education activities focusing on secondary education,
building on the extensive experience gained in earlier European projects
Within NanoDiode education activities and material were evaluated according to the
quality of the content in terms of scientific and factual accuracy, balanced representation and actuality. Furthermore, a preliminary evaluation was conducted throughout
in-depth interviews with teachers and students on playfulness, instructiveness and
complexity. Quantitative criteria on accessibility (links, downloads), cost, sustainability and reproducibility (print, e learning) were tested within the evaluation.

Furthermore, the activities were performed in the light of Responsible Research and
Innovation, a concept to involve both stakeholders and society in innovation development to tackle grand societal challenges. Responsible Research and Innovation in
science education is discussed and found to be in-line with “best practice” criteria
identified.
Results show that the four main pillars of “best practice” in science education are:

BioNanoNet started the first series of education activities (workshops) focusing on
secondary education, building on the extensive experience gained in earlier European projects. Interactive workshops with secondary school children, building on “best
practices” in education have further strengthen the evaluation of educational material
and initiatives and investigate the applicability of the “best practice” criteria defined.
Additionally NanoDiode has followed the initiatives from other EU project to organize
“teach the teacher workshops” on nanotechnology education, in order to show teachers how to work with selected nanotechnology educational materials and activities
and to motivate teachers to present new science topics to their students. An online
evaluation tool is now online on www.nanodiode.eu to allow teachers and schoolchildren to assess the impact of nanotech educational tools after use.
The NanoDiode Teach the Teacher Pilot Workshop held on March 10th, 2015 in Graz
was prepared to test the concept of the Teach the Teacher Workshop and introduce
the school workshop tools. The aim of the Teach the Teacher Pilot Workshop was to
provide initial information on the thematic field for teachers to be able to formulate
their own opinion on the topic and to get a first idea of the applicability of the
NanoDiode Teach the Teacher and School Workshop Concept. First results from the
Pilot Test of the “Teach the Teacher” Workshop showed that teachers were very ea-

ger to take up upon the topic of “nanotechnologies”. 100% responded, they would
like to introduce nanotechnology into the classroom. Nevertheless they would need
and appreciate the NanoDiode Teach the Teacher Workshop for preparation in order

the right sources. For Austrian teachers it was important that information was presented in German.
The School Kids Workshops were held in three different locations:
1) RCPE Graz: Kids could work in the lab and produce their own medicine
2) Medical University Graz: Kids got an insight in the daily routine of nanotechnology research and development
3) School Class: NanoDiode Workshop was held to inform the kids about basic
“nano” knowledge on “What is nanotechnology? Size & Scale? Size dependent properties? Innovation & Application? Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects
(ELSA) in Nanotechnology? Nanotechnology in the future?

NanoDiode User Committee

The EU FP7 project NanoDiode (Developing Innovative Outreach and Dialogue on
responsible nanotechnologies in EU civil society) aims at stakeholder engagement
and dialogue which are essential to the responsible development of nanotechnologies in Europe.
A User Committee (UC) is a platform enabling the transfer of knowledge exchange
of information about new scientific developments that are expected to enter the market in the form of innovative products or processes. The aim of UCs is to give a voice
to professional end-users and Civil Society Organisations (CSO’s) in the steering of
research and innovation (R&I). As such they may contribute to R&I outcomes for
practical applications of nanotechnologies, by bringing forward their wishes, presumptions and fears on the envisaged products or processes.
The UC on Nanomedicine has allowed the researchers to assess their ideas and expected results against the opinions of societal stakeholders (i.e., those who will become the “users” of any eventual products). This gave the researchers the opportunity to identify and resolve possible barriers to innovation. Adaptations to the research or product design could avoid or counteract identified dilemmas and attune
R&I to societal values and needs. The NanoDiode User Committee brought together
technology developers, risk researchers, scientists, industry and users (professional
users and end-users represented by the public) to scan the horizon of nanotechnologies for nanomedicine.
The practical objective is to identify opportunities and challenges for specific nanotechnologies, moving from the laboratory setting to use in the real world (e.g. additional requirements in the context of use (effects of scaling up); knowledge gaps in

translation from theory to practice). The underlying methodological objective is to explore the effect of enhanced user involvement in technology development.
The meeting consisted of two parts: the first keynotes were held by world-class scientists representing both science and industry perspectives and future development of
nanomedicine all over the world on “Nanomedical Ethics: A View from the
Trenches”.


Focus groups meeting & Networking Event

An essential success factor of the cooperation in the BioNanoNet Network is the
ongoing interaction between our members in the thematic focus areas of
sensortechnology, nanotoxicology and health, safety and medicine. The BioNanoNet
invited all partners to the BioNanoNet Focus-Groups Meeting, held on 7th of April, at
the University of Graz.
More than 30 partners have attended the focus groups sessions to discuss about hot
topics, draft proposals, and European work programs. The BioNanoNet members
presented their outstanding expertise and newly launched projects as well as
innovative ideas for future collaborations. BioNanoNet has additionally presented the
flyers of the focus groups which have been created together with our members. The
expertise folders and the flyer for the health, safety and medicine focus group are
under construction and we highly appreciate your input.

Key success factor of the meeting has been the active contributions of each
participant in the dialogue between the network partners as well as the discussion
regarding the activities in the focus groups, which brought up new visions and
insights in the bio- and nanotechnology research sectors.

BioNanoMed Conference 2015

The 6th International BioNanoMed 2015 Congress organized by Techkonnex –
High-Tech Promotion in collaboration with the Medical University Graz, (8 - 10
April 2015) was again a remarkable success! The BioNanoMed has finally established as an internationally recognized congress for the Nano/Bio/MedicineCommunity. About 150 participants from 34 different nationalities joined the BioNanoMed 2015 congress.
The topics including Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications & Regenerative Medicine, Nanotechnology for Detection, Diagnostics, Therapeutics & Monitorings,
NanoPharmaceuticals & Drug Delivery Nanotechnology as well as the key topic Advances in Nano-Oncology led to many inspiring discussions.
The program of BioNanoMed 2015 included high-level presentations given by excellent speakers! The very interesting panel discussion "Clinical Translation and Commercialization Aspects" was led by Kai Pinkernell, Miltenyi BioTec GmbH.
For the special session Ethics and Societal Issues in Nanomedicine we highly appreciated the presence of two well known speakers who presented their topical view
which led to lively discussions! This session was organized in collaboration with the
BioNanoNet Forschungsgesellschaft mbH as part of the NanoDiode User Committee.

NanoBazaar

The aim of the EU project NanoDiode is to strengthen the communication of scientific
content in the fields of nanotechnologies and to initiate a discussion with the public.
Therefore BioNanoNet organized together with Studio HB the second NanoBazaar
which took place in the inner city of Graz. For this event we collaborate with Werkstadt Graz, a shop and gallery for contemporary art.
The Nano Bazaar is a pop-up initiative to inform the public about various aspects of
nanotechnologies.
How do you envision your future? We invite you to discuss with scientific experts
and gain a closer insight into the nanoworld with a nano store, a video installation
and a nano gallery. Nanotechnologies include a topic with a variety of opportunities
and challenges!

5th NANoREG Consortium Meeting

More than 150 participants at this project consortium meeting already show the big
scale of NANoREG-project. In Lisbon, the coordinator presented the results achieved
within the first two years of NANoREG and that the collaboration with OECD, ECHA,
EU-US, etc. is on a good way. The R&D work of high quality keeps focussing on the
regulatory questions & needs (ref. to Factsheet D1.1) which will be the basis for development of the regulatory framework and the NANoREG Toolbox for regulators and
legislators. Within this context, considering human health as well as the environment,
and the concepts such as read-across, grouping, control banding, tiered approach,
and decision trees will be included/used.
In addition to the Consortium meeting, several side events took place. We highlight
two very interesting workshops here:

National Coordinators workshop: exploitation training on how to prosper from
NANoREG work. Within this very intensive training, the national coordinators
could present the specific national needs, the stakeholders and the challenges
to tackle in each country. Follow-up activities will take place and will help
NANoREG project to focus even more on the specific needs of the participating countries.

NICC-workshop: the NANoREG Industry Consultation Committee (NICC)
workshop aimed at better interaction with industry. Crucial for this objective
are the so-called “safety in value chain case studies” (SVCCS). We are very
happy that the first SVCCS “GALANT” is an Austrian initiative. It has been developed by BioNanoNet together with the BioNanoNet-members Heidrun

& Myrtill Simko (both AIT), Jutta Labres (Stölzle Oberglas GmbH), and the

NanoDiode Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue

The NanoDiode Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue (MSD) was organized in the frame of the
International Student Congress 2015 in Graz. The topic of the MSD was Nanomedicine and to get to know and discuss important societal and ethical challenges and
together identify desired fields of innovation.
The MSD started with a Session on Technical Innovations with nano-relevant presentations of:

Dr.in Ruth Prassl from the Medical University of Graz held a Workshop on “Nanomedicine. Nanomedicine employs converging
technologies to improve human health. Nanomedicine includes the development of
NanoGallery - NanoDiode
nanoparticles for therapeutic and diagnostic applications and the design of nanosized tools for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The workshop has provided an overview on the status quo, promises and pitfalls in nanomedicine with special focus on nanopharmaceuticals.

nanotechnology?”. He presented the
current Nano-developments in medicine,

(www.nanoeis.eu). The following panel discussion was opened with a short statement of Dr. Margit Hofer from Center of Social Innovation talking about the findings of
the NanOpinion project (www.nanopinion.eu).

BioTechMed-Graz und NIKON eröffnen Center of Excellence
Kameras von NIKON begeistern weltweit die Foto-Fans. Die Mikroskope des japanischen
Konzerns stehen bei ForscherInnen hoch im Kurs. Mit der Eröffnung des NIKON-Center of
Excellence geht die interuniversitäre Forschungskooperation BioTechMed-Graz einen weiteren wichtigen Schritt in der erfolgreichen Grazer Gesundheitsforschung. Das „NIKONCenter of Excellence for Super-resolution Microscopy: Cells & Organelles“ stellt den Grazer
ForscherInnen zum Teil weltweit einzigartige Mikroskope, die einen Durchbruch in Auflösungsvermögen und Messgeschwindigkeit darstellen, zur Verfügung und setzt einen weiteren deutlichen Impuls im Bereich der biomedizinischen Forschung am Wissenschaftsstandort Graz.
Innovative Mikroskopie: Schub für die Forschungsinfrastruktur
„Forschung für Gesundheit“ ist das erklärte Ziel der interuniversitären Forschungskooperation BioTechMed-Graz, in der die Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, die Technische Universität Graz und die Medizinische Universität Graz ihre Kompetenzen bündeln. An der Schnittstelle von Biomedizinischer Grundlagenforschung, Technologischer Entwicklung und Medizinischer Anwendung arbeiten WissenschafterInnen der drei Universitäten Hand in Hand
im Dienste innovativer Gesundheitsforschung zum Wohle der Bevölkerung. Im Bereich der
Forschungsinfrastruktur bildet die Eröffnung des „NIKON-Center of Excellence for Superresolution Microscopy: Cells & Organelles“ einen weiteren Meilenstein im erfolgreichen
Forschungsverbund. Mit dem NIKON Center erhält der Forschungsstandort Graz das erste
Zentrum dieser Art in Österreich. An der Medizinischen Universität Graz sowie an der KarlFranzens-Universität Graz werden insgesamt drei „Super-Mikroskope“ in Betrieb genom-

men, deren zukunftsweisende Technik einen Durchbruch im Bereich der Lichtmikroskopie
darstellt. Mehr als 100 Jahre galt das Dogma, dass die Auflösung der Lichtmikroskope auf
die halbe Wellenlänge beschränkt ist. Durch bahnbrechende Entwicklungen, die 2014 mit
dem Nobelpreis für Chemie honoriert wurden, konnte nunmehr diese Auflösungsgrenze
drastisch – bis auf die molekulare Ebene herab – verbessert werden.
„Das NIKON Center of Excellence bestätigt die innovative Entwicklung der Life-ScienceForschung in Graz. Die vorbildliche Kooperation der hiesigen Universitäten ist dafür die
ideale Voraussetzung“, bestätigen Rektorin Christa Neuper, Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz

NIKON A1Rsi: „Blitzschnelle“ Bilderfassung mit Galvanoscanner
Am Zentrum für Medizinische Grundlagenforschung der Medizinischen Universität Graz
wird das NIKON A1Rsi zukünftig einen internationalen Top-Standard in der Lichtmikroskopie zur Verfügung stellen. Das Mikroskop arbeitet mit einem Galvanoscanner nach dem
konfokalen Prinzip, was bedeutet, dass im Gegensatz zur konventionellen Lichtmikroskopie
nicht das gesamte Präparat beleuchtet wird, sondern zu jedem Zeitpunkt immer nur ein
kleiner Bruchteil. Dadurch können in Summe optische Schnittbilder mit hohem Kontrast erzeugt werden, die fast nur Licht aus einer schmalen Schicht um die jeweilige Fokusebene
enthalten. Dieses Gerät zeichnet sich vor allem durch die extrem schnelle Messgeschwindigkeit aus und soll in weiterer Folge auch für die Intravitalmikroskopie, also die Messungen
in intaktem Gewebe, ausgebaut werden.

NIKON N-STORM: Zehnfach höhere Auflösung
Das Mikroskop NIKON N-STORM steht den WissenschafterInnen am Institut für Molekulare
Biowissenschaften der Universität Graz zur Verfügung. Mit der hochmodernen Technologie,
die eine zehnfach höhere Auflösung als herkömmliche Lichtmikroskopie gewährleistet, gelingt es nun, die Position einzelner Moleküle ganz genau zu untersuchen und damit zelluläre Prozesse mit bislang unerreichter Präzision abzubilden. Das Team um Univ.-Prof. Dr.
Sepp Dieter Kohlwein und Univ.-Ass. Dr. Heimo Wolinski erwartet sich unter anderem neue
Aufschlüsse in der Grundlagenforschung des Fettstoffwechsels: „Wir verfolgen zum Beispiel die molekularen Interaktionen von Proteinen in der Zelle, um besser zu verstehen wie
zelluläre Lipide, also die Fette, metabolisiert werden. Dies ist vor dem Hintergrund der immer häufiger auftretenden Fettstoffwechsel-Störungen von besonderem biomedizinischen
Interesse.“

NIKON N-SIM: Visualisierung zellulärer Strukturen in lebenden Zellen
Am Institut für Molekularbiologie und Biochemie der Med Uni Graz wird mit der Entwicklung
eines weltweit einzigartigen NIKON dual N-SIM/TIRF- wfFRET Systems die Visualisierung
zellulärer Strukturen und molekularer Vorgänge bei bisher noch nicht dagewesener Auflösung erreicht. Das System stellt eine gemeinsame Entwicklung von NIKON und dem Team
um Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Wolfgang Graier und Assoz.-Prof. PD Mag. Dr. Roland Malli dar
und wird über die nächsten Jahre kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt, um die momentanen
technischen Möglichkeiten der Lichtmikroskopie in der biomedizinischen Forschung substantiell zu erweitern. Dabei wird nicht nur die doppelte Auflösung konventioneller optischer
Laserscanning-Mikroskopie erreicht, sondern es soll auch die simultane Erfassung und

BioTechMed-Graz Symposium

The visitors of BioTechMed-Graz Symposium 2015 have been offered an interesting and
diversified program.
Short presentations of BioTechMed-Graz postdocs gave an insight into the inter-university
scientific projects and research topics of BioTechMed-Graz.
The highlight of the evening was the keynote lecture of the internationally renowned neuroscientist Prof. Dr. Arno Villringer on the topic "How do unconscious stimuli affect brain and
behavior?"
This exciting topic has also been discussed in a final panel discussion with Prof. Marian
David (Department of Philosophy, University of Graz), Prof. Robert Legenstein (Institute of
Theoretical information processing, Graz University of Technology) and Prof. Franz Fazekas (Division of General Neurology, Medical University of Graz).
The final get-together offered a good opportunity for discussions among the speakers and
participants.
