PRESIDENTS CORNER
A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
I assume you have all heard about the recent, unfortunate, accident on the lake. Our prayers go out to David’s family
in their time of grieving. I truly hope this incident reminds all of us to be very careful and use extreme caution while
enjoying on-the-ice activities.
Be sure to check the thickness of the ice before any and all things planned on the ice. Each year there are reports of
ice fishing accidents, let’s strive not to ever be on that list again. Although this did not involve areas of aerators let’s
keep in mind that if not correctly used aerated areas can be dangerous. Please use your aerators in a fashion that
protects only your dock area and does not encroach on the shared lake area. I would also encourage those using
aerators to put flags or markings on your docks to let everyone know of open water and possible thin ice. We have
a lot of winter left, the meteorologists say (but what do they really know?), so be careful and have fun.
A reminder, keep a close watch on your homes. This winter has been extremely cold and windy. Those single digit
temperatures are bad enough but the strong winds make it even more possible to end up with frozen pipes. Let that
water drip a little if you can. Weekenders check on your homes often. Remember it isn’t the frozen pipes that do
damage it’s the thawing out and broken pipes that do the damage.
I don’t know about you but I’m ready for spring. As my wife said to me, “I don’t want to hear any complaints this
July/August about the heat!”
God Bless You All
Ed

Ed asked the board for approval of $100.00 to go to the Fire Department Annual Fund Raiser. Bob motioned we
give the same amount of $100.00 this year and Jim seconded the motion. All were in favor.
There are 408 members and 45 advertisers to date.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Building: The bathroom floor is done and plumbing fixed. Total cost was $650.00.
Pop Can Cage: Dave V. thought a concrete slab under the cages would look nice and be easier to maintain.
Dave A. motioned we do this when convenient pending the approval of the Ahrens family and Bob seconded the
motion. All were in favor.
Boat Ramp: We should probably open the gates this year for the winter after the lake freezes over. It would
probably be a good idea to “blow it out” and oil the chains yet this fall and then maybe again next spring.
Septic/Water Testing: The County Sanitarian left off the list of lot owners in the county that have contract
agreements to have their systems checked and with whom at Peoples Bank for Dave A. Dave was unavailable
at that time so was unable to speak with him. It does appear that he has been doing his job.
Roads: Barbie stated that they have been busy doing some access work and have done a lot of work on the

roads. They have gotten rid of most of the old soy oil that was put down. A couple of people have called on
Hillcrest and they have been called back. Barbie wanted to remind everyone that gravel roads require constant
maintenance.
Web-Site: Ed stated that it was up to date.
Meeting with John: Stan and Ed could not find a time that they could meet with John Ahrens. Stan has now left
town so Ed will meet with John himself tomorrow. There was a letter copied to the Association that was sent to
the Ahrens family regarding dredging in front of their home which will be addressed as well. Dave A. has found
a place to haul dirt close by if we want to visit that avenue for dredging.
NEW BUSINESS:
Fish Structures: Doug Klemme came to Harry Meek regarding a bowling ball structure that is cut in half and
has (12) five foot pvc pipes glued into the holes. These could be placed strategically in groups which would
produce a long term fish structure for the lake vs. trees that can move. There are several things to consider in
the placement of these structures so that the lake will remain safe for tubers and skiers. The project has already
been approved by the Ahrens family. Dave A. motioned that we support this project with a check of $600.00
from our fish management fund and Jim seconded the motion. All were in favor. This project will take place in
the spring.

Otters on the lake: Dave Allen and his sons have seen otters and are concerned about the fish population.
Harry commented that there are so many fish that it should not be a problem. Board members will check around
with some of the other fisherman that are out every day to see if they have seen any.
Electrical outages: A lot owner called Ed regarding the fact that he has had a lot of power outages and
wondered if anyone else was having trouble. He had sixteen in one day. No board member has heard of any
problems of such. He also commented on the dredging team being very unfriendly. They also tore up his yard
and fire pit.
LET’S GO FISHING
Unless you like to ice fish, it’s been a long winter for wetting a line. So for those of us who prefer open water
fishing there are things to do right now until the water opens. Now is the time to get out your rods, reels and
tackle boxes and get busy. Take everything out of those tackle boxes and do an inventory. Do you have enough
terminal tackle as in hooks, weights, swivels, bobbers, jig heads, twister tails, etc? Inspect your favorite crank
baits, jerk baits, spinner baits, and buzz baits. Check bills, hooks, skirts and blades.
Take the reels off your rods and replace all your fishing line. Oil and grease the reels and clean the fish scum off
of them. Clean and inspect your rods especially the rod eyes for cuts and nicks. Use one of your wife’s nylon
stockings to run through guide eyes to check for nicks. After a good afternoon of work you will have a list of
things you NEED.
Good news! There are sport and fishing shows from now through March. The Fishing Swap Meet at the State
Fair grounds is my favorite the last week end in February. When in doubt, buy 2 of whatever you need.

As soon as it warms up, I’ll be heading out to cut down some cedar trees. Like the 5-6 footers for brush piles. I
would like to put out at least 3 good brush piles with 5 to 6 trees per pile. May need a few more concrete blocks.
Would like to get the brush piles set mid to late February. All with the approval of the Ahrens family
Two other reminders you may need to know:
Kids Fishing Derby will be Saturday June 14th. We need your support both financially and as volunteers. This is
the event of the year sponsored by the Lake Association and survives solely by your donations and help. If you
have never been to it, you and your kids deserve to join in the fun.
This May we will be conducting another Fish survey with Aaron Klusmier from Farmers National. We will also
need a few volunteer’s to help in the boat.
Looking forward to another great fishing season. We are truly blessed to live on Lake Ponderosa with the great
neighbors and awesome fishing,
Good fishing, Harry
WINTER ICE SAFETY TIPS
• There is no such thing as 100 percent safe ice
• Ice thickness is not uniform on any body of water. Things like current and springs slow ice growth.
Rocks, trees or docks that poke through ice will conduct heat and make the ice around it less stable.
• The insulating effect of snow slows down the freezing process
• New ice is usually safer than old ice and ice seldom freezes or thaws at a uniform rate. It can be one
foot thick in one spot and be only a few inches thick 10 feet away.
• Clear ice is usually safer than off-colored ice and slush is a danger sign
• Do not park ATVs next to one another. Keep them spread apart.
• Stay well clear of open areas caused by aerators or geese. The ice nearby may be thinner than
elsewhere.

Three fishermen are out fishing together and they each bring their own bucket.
The buckets are identical, the only difference is the label on the bucket. The buckets are labeled "Salmon", "Trout", and "Salmon and Trout" and correspond to the
fishing preference of each fisherman. Shortly after coming ashore, one of the
fishermen realizes that they each put their fish in the wrong bucket when they
were fishing meaning all three buckets were now labeled incorrectly! Naturally, the lids of the buckets are all
closed now.
How many bucket lids need to be opened and how many fish need to be taken out at random in order to properly
label the buckets?
HINT: Remember, ALL THREE labels are incorrect (eg: The bucket labeled "Trout" contains either "Salmon" or
"Salmon and Trout").
Scenario 2: If the fish he looks as it is a trout, it must be the "Trout" bucket. It cannot be the "Salmon and Trout" bucket since
we know the current labels are incorrect and it's not the "Salmon" bucket because the fish he looked at is a trout. Next, the
"Salmon" bucket cannot contain only salmon since we know the current labels are incorrect, so it must be the "Salmon and
Trout" bucket. The remaining bucket, labeled "Trout" must therefore be the "Salmon" bucket.

ANSWER: Just one.
Eric DeBoef, D.D.S.
Patrick Jones, D.D.S.
Kara Weishaar, D.D.S.
EXPLANATION: A fisherman need only
look at one fish from the bucket labeled
"Salmon and Trout". This will lead to one
of two scenarios.
