It’s that time of year again to welcome all of you to the 8th Annual ARM Road Show & Business Networking Conference. This one is sure to be the best yet. I am so confident in saying this…that if it isn’t…I won’t be your President next year! This year’s conference is being held at Highway Auto Parts in Roseville, MI. A huge thanks goes out to Ross Lewicki and his staff at Highway Auto for allowing us to host such a great event this year at their facility. I think we have all seen, whether you are a Board member, committee member, or an attendee, all the hard work that goes into getting a facility ready to host. But—in the end it is all worth it—as this is one of the best networking conferences in the country, and it is a known fact that our Road Show is admired by many other state associations around the country. We will be kicking things off in “full swing” on Thursday May 12th with our Vendors & Members “Networking” Golf Scramble. This event alone is guaranteed to set the tone for the rest of the weekend! Dust off the clubs and gather your team—and let the fun begin! Friday is packed with the ever so popular “Yard Tours”. This year we will be touring U.S. Auto Supply, Schram’s Waterford, Schrams’s new Pontiac U-Pull & Save location, as well as Middleton Auto Parts in Roseville. It is guaranteed you will finish out Friday with many new and fresh thoughts and ideas to take back to your own facility. Then, let’s not forget Friday night’s food, fun and activities…including a delicious barbeque cookout, awards, live auction, raffles and loads of fun with exhibitors and fellow recyclers alike—with a couple of new twists this year! Saturday is the BIG day! You will want to make sure as many staff members from your facility as possible can attend this year. It is jam packed with informative and instructional seminars, speakers, and classes, well-designed to suit all in attendance. This year’s speakers we have lined up for you, as well as instructional seminars are by far the best yet. This committee has worked so very hard to make this the best Road Show yet. I am not sure we will be able to top it next year. (Well?…OK, I am). So, as always we look forward to seeing each and every one of you at this year’s conference, so grab as many employees as possible—you won’t regret it. We, as your association board will do everything possible to have the “red carpet” rolled out for when you arrive. We ask that you do your part and help us fill that red carpet, and keep it rolled out. Be sure to clear the mind, be open to new ideas—and most of all, be ready to have lots of fun! See you there…and again, welcome! Location, Map & Accommodations The Automotive Recyclers of Michigan would like to invite you, your employees and family to our 2016 Road Show and Business Networking Conference May 12-14, 2016 at Highway Auto Parts in Roseville, MI. HIGHWAY AUTO PARTS 29231 Groesbeck Highway Roseville, MI 48066 www.highway-autoparts.com Highway Auto Parts is located in the heart of the eastern Metro Detroit area and is centrally located to many major thoroughfares, including: I-696, I-75, I-94 and M-59. HIGHWAY AUTO PARTS HISTORY Highway Auto Parts was founded in 1957 by Jack Rukes behind a few houses on Groesbeck in Roseville. In 1962 the houses were torn down and the current building was put up for a sales lobby, offices, and warehouse. Jack Rukes quickly grew the business into one of the busiest salvage yards in the Detroit Metro area. During the 70’s he paved the entire yard with cement and built a new 30,000 sq. foot warehouse with more office space. Business continued to thrive and in 1989 Don Sharon and Hank Cloutier purchased it from the Rukes family. They renamed it Don & Hank’s Highway Auto Parts and continued to run it until 2012 when they both were ready to retire. Ryan’s Auto Parts purchased it in 2012 and changed the name back to Highway Auto Parts. After purchasing it they quickly set about modernizing the facility. New racks, hoists, and equipment were brought in. A new drainage system with multiple catch basins and separators was installed around the property. The facade, lobby, and warehouse spaces of both buildings were updated, and a new covered truck well was installed. Course Description: Workplace Violence One out of every six violent crimes occurs in the workplace. While workplace homicides grab the headlines (homicide is the second leading cause of death on the job and the number one killer of women in the workplace)…other forms of workplace violence happen much more frequently. No organization, regardless of size or type of business, is immune to workplace violence. This lecture on “Workplace Violence” gives an introduction to organizations on how to recognize the warning signs of possible violent behavior, as well as how to avoid or defuse potentially dangerous situations. Topics introduced in this lecture include: • Fostering a positive workplace environment • Armed assailants • Physical assault • Sexual harassment • Threats and verbal abuse • Aggressive behavior • The warning signs • Underlying causes of workplace violence DAVID KENDZIORSKI David Kendziorski is a nationally known storm water expert who specializes in permit compliance for the auto and scrap recycling industries. Dave wrote ARA’s Storm Water Compliance Manual, and he provides professional storm water compliance services for nearly 200 auto recyclers in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and California. Since 2004, Dave has served as Program Manager for ARM’s Michigan Certified Automotive Recycler (MICAR) program. Continued on next page About Our Speakers MIKE SWIFT My grandfather Orrie Swift started Swift’s Auto Salvage sometime in the 1940s. My dad had worked for his dad off and on for quite a few years. In 1975, my grandfather wanted to sell the business. My dad Dale had an older brother that did not want it, a younger brother that wanted it given to him, and another younger brother that was at work one day gone for three days then back at work. My dad bought it for $10,000 in 1975. We would go down to the yard as kids and pull weeds, sort junk, clean up junk, etc. We were the first recycler to have the Hollander System installed. That was a game changer. We still held on to those card files for a few years, but didn’t keep them much after two years, we didn’t need them. Now we compete with the world. My father had a partner. I told my dad in 2000 I was not going to work at Swift’s unless he got rid of his partner. I was looking for a job when a guy we knew owned Trails End. He said to come to work for him. The only thing was it was for very little money. I told him thanks, but no thanks. Then he said why don’t you buy it? I didn’t have any money and neither did our parents, etc. We then came up with a number and purchased Trail’s End Salvage in December, 1999, so after 20 years at the same place, my brother Steve and I were no longer at Swift’s. Around 2004-2005, my dad’s partner wanted out of Swift’s, so my dad bought him out. So now we have 2 facilities. We tried not to step on each other’s toes. We were the same family competing for the same business. My dad was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He fought for three and a half years and then he passed away in October 2010. Our mom Gretchen ran the yard with some key employees and my sisters, but with the way the industry was going and getting tougher and tougher to try and run two facilities, we decided to close Swift’s in 2013. We kept key employees from both places. We changed the name and we are still fighting everyday in this business. We have the best employees. We have longevity in our company. The youngest tenured employee is my son Sam; he has been with us three years. We’ve had most people over 20 years and some over 30 years. It is a struggle most days. But we have a great family and great employees We are blessed for sure. The one thing we have done twice is we have had a car show and we raised money for our dad’s philanthropic fund. It is a cancer fund that helps all people with cancer with the smallest and simplest of needs. We love doing it and we are looking for other ways of raising money for the Fund. PAUL SECKER Paul Secker, President of SAS FORKS, who has been in the industry over 30 years, attended several ‘train the trainer’ courses, involved with forklift and wheel loader lift capacities daily, and has presented on this material on multiple occasions in person and in webinars. Paul has visited many auto recycler facilities in USA, Canada, UK, The Netherlands and Australia obtaining many pointers on safety. DAVE HOBBS Dave Hobbs is an ASE master certified L1/L3 training developer and field technical trainer for Delphi. He is a contributor editor for Motor Age and field correspondent for MACS (Mobile A/C Society). Dave has been the trainer in dozens of AVI (Automotive Video Innovations) and Delphi YouTube videos over the years. His AVI L3 Advanced Hybrid Specialist test prep program has helped hundreds of technicians pass the ASE L3 test and his “Automotive Recycler’s Guide to Hybrid Battery Packs” developed for ARA is scheduled to be in print by spring of 2016.
