Beauty And Brains.
And Power, Luxury, Performance...
If you’re tired of compromise, maybe you’re speaking the wrong language.
Renowned for combining luxury with performance, both Aston Martin and
Jaguar represent the finest in driving excellence with the latest in technology and manufacturing. Perhaps it’s time to try something English.

JUNE 2008
Jaguar Tracks The President’s Perspective
The big news this month was our 44th Annual Concours, and I am not a bit afraid to say that it was as
close to flawless as this kind of event can be. I attribute that to two things: Dan Jensen volunteered to be
Concours Chairman this year. Dan is natural born
organizer. Without benefit of a
face-to-face turnover with our outgoing Concours Chair, he planned
and executed what turned out to
be our best show ever. Every move
he made, he documented. He is
currently generating a “Lessons Learned” folder for
our next Concours Chair. The second big contributing factor to our great success was our volunteers. We
had our usual core of volunteers that we depend upon
for every event, and we had some first time volunteers who were an enormous help in putting on this
endeavor. We could have used more. The more people
we have working, the less work there is for each individual. Dan set up a schedule for manning the booths
so no one had more than an hour on duty. We were
a little short on parkers. We’ll be actively asking for
more volunteers next year. It’s not hard and it doesn’t
take long so please don’t run and hide when we come
knocking.
Dick Cavicke had a large enough number of volunteer judges that he was able to set up a very comfortable judging schedule. Our judges were extremely
courteous and professional. I think everyone left the
site satisfied that he/she had been judged fairly. Dick,
Dan and I sent a Thank You letter to every volunteer.
Of course one is always left out. In this case it was
Dan’s own wife Jorgene. She made many phone calls
requesting volunteers and also set up the KUSI local
television coverage for us. I’ll take this opportunity to
thank Jorgene for the three of us. Dan, you owe her a
dinner.
Unfortunately, our very fine Editor, Katherine informs me that due to the late date of the event, we
will be unable to put a photo article together in time
for this month’s issue, but next month’s issue we will
have an entire section in color devoted to the show. I
look forward to it.
Patsy Millard has set up an excellent venue for out
Concours Afterglow brunch. We are going to the
Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club. She has planned a champagne brunch, Concours slide show, Concours DVD
and the last half of Paul’s video on the history of
JUNE 2008
Jaguar. We can relive our elegant show in the
beautiful surroundings of Rancho Santa Fe. Please
see page four or go to our web site www.sdjag.com
for more information and an RSVP link. Please
RSVP as soon as possible.
Craig Turner has got us all set up for SDJC at the
Cruisin’ Grand. He went to the British Invasion
last month to get the lay of the land and it looks
like it will be a lot of fun. Word is out and we are
getting RSVPs from the IEJC and the JOC LA so
you’d better sign up fast. There are only twenty
confirmed parking spaces. See page four or go to
our web site www.sdjag.com for more info and an
RSVP link.
We are close to completing our SDJC 2009 calendar. If you want to see your lovely Jaguar on our
calendar next year, now is the time to send me a
photo or two. Email them to me at stick767@cox.
net. Give me large files so the photos will be crisp
and clear on the calendar.

SDJC Day at the San Diego Fair
Thursday July 3, 2008
Our annual participation in the car show at the San Diego
Country Fair was as fun as always. This year we brought
seven cars ( see table below), participated in the Charo show,
walked the grounds from one end to the other, and stuffed
ourselves wtih the fair delicacies seldon partaken of outside
in the real world. It’s a good thing we showed up as there
was not another car cub present

to dance with her as she went by our asile.
Her Flamenco guitar music is superb.

The 11th Annual Coronado Speed Festival is only 2 months away! Mark your calendars for
September 27th & 28th for the premier car event of the season!
RACE AT THE BASE SPEEDS TO TV SETS NATIONWIDE
The Coronado Speed Festival Goes ‘Car Crazy’ with an Array of Racing Machines
For the past century, car enthusiasts have shown their passion for both high-performance and great-look
ing cars. To commemorate this craze, over 225 of the world’s most unique and pedigreed machines from the
Coronado Speed Festival will be featured on the Car Crazy TV show, specifically geared toward car hobbyists
on the SPEED channel. The first episode, featuring Admiral John Nathman aired on June 23rd and the next
episode, featuring details on the unique event, will air in September, closer to the 2008 event.
The special Car Crazy episode will feature the Coronado Speed Festival’s collection of vintage cars of all
shapes, sizes and models. On display will be some of the best modern racecars, including Hot Rod, Trans Am
and many more. Not only will this episode pique the interest of local San Diego car enthusiasts, it will also
allow car lovers nationwide to appreciate these distinctive cars. You can view the June 23rd show at:
http://www.carcrazycentral.com/TV-Show-Watch-Episodes.aspx?VideoID=377
About Car Crazy Central
Car Crazy TV is hosted by Barry Meguiar. Along with its radio and Internet outlets, Car Crazy Central was
founded by the Meguiar family for the car hobby community. These are the result of 100 years of Meguiar’s
family passion for great looking cars. In addition to viewing these standout cars on Car Crazy, motor
lovers can submit their prized vehicles for judging at the Coronado Speed Festival. The 11th annual racing
and military tribute event and third annual car show contest will be held in one of the most distinctive racecar
locations, Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California.
The Fleet Week San Diego event is scheduled from September 27 to 28.
Coronado Speed Festival at a Glance
The Coronado Speed Festival is the Navy’s annual opportunity to offer an open house to the public and give
individuals and families an opportunity to experience a military base as they never have. As part of this
experience, event goers will have the opportunity to explore military equipment and talk to captains and
crew members. Children will also be able to enjoy several other youth-oriented activities. This is an event
that the whole family can enjoy.
This year, over 30,000 people are expected to pack the grandstands to view a spectator-friendly 1.6-mile course
that is constructed in a matter of days on the runways and taxiways of Naval Air Station North Island. Car
enthusiasts will be able to step back in time to enjoy auto racing’s rich history with tours of the racecar pits
and speak with the drivers of these unique machines.

San Diego Jaguar Club Wins the Ball Bearing Rallye!
Story & Photos by Katherine Partain
Lou Glaper and navigator Deborah Durham,
representing the San Diego Jaguar Club, won the
July 12, 2008 Ball Bearing Rallye. This was the frst

the event has been won by the SDJC. Seven club

Second place went to Jaguar owners Dave & Tracy
Turner (who by the way are not SDJC members).
Both 1st & 2nd place cars were Mark IIs - Lou’s is
green and Dave’s is white (Cover page picture).
The rallye started in the Carlsbad Outlet Mall,
roamed through Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe and
Escondido, ending up at the Rancho Bernardo

Lou now has the responsibility of adding something
Jaguar to the trophy and the pleasure of planning
the next rallye in January of 2009.

29th San Diego British Car Day and Picnic
Admiral Baker Field, San Diego, CA
Sunday, October 5, 2008
Twenty-nine years ago, a hearty band of British car enthusiasts got together over picnics at a park to
view each other’s cars, and enjoy each other’s friendship. This year, we return to that heritage. Over
the past 29 years the event has grown considerably and now attracts participants from all over
California and beyond. We are proud that this event has become one of the premier British car shows in
California. In the past few years, we have incurred considerable additional expenses relating to, among
other things, forming a corporation, and insurance. Thus, we have made some changes in keeping with the
original spirit of the event. For instance, there will be no vendors, program or raffle at this year’s show.
We continue to provide a wonderful experience, the very popular Cameron Highlander Bagpipers and over
400 diverse English cars for your viewing pleasure. Have a Great Day!!

Who’s Who In The Zoo. One of the fun things about Jaguar ownership and SDJC membership is you get to meet new
and interesting people including: sales personnel; prior owners; other Jaguar enthusiasts; auto parts store personnel;
those people who stop to talk to you when they admire your Jaguar <smile>; and of course the people where you have
your Jaguar serviced and repaired. In this issue I profile another of our Jaguar Tracks newsletter advertisers who can
help you keep your Jaguar looking its best. The sixth in my series of Jaguar Tracks advertiser profiles is on A Perfect
Fix Collision Center. I hope you find this profile informative and helpful in selecting the right place to have your
collision repair or restoration work done on your Jaguar.
I visited with Peter Hogenes, the owner of A Perfect Fix Collision Center, on 11 April to learn more about him
and his auto body repair and restoration business. A Perfect Fix is located at 375 State Place, Escondido, CA 92029.
The phone number is (760) 745-4130. The shop is conveniently located in a small industrial park just off of Vineyard
Ave/Auto Park Way in Escondido near the junction of I-15 and CA78.

Peter grew up in Holland and after finishing public school he entered the auto body business at 18. He was eager to
learn the business and got a lot of pride out of learning this trade and seeing his work to completion. He attended additional
auto body trade schools in Holland for four years to refine his skills. His first visit to the USA was in 1989 and he really
enjoyed his time here visiting friends in Escondido. He enjoyed it so much that he visited the USA each year for a vacation
five years in a row. He moved here permanently in 1995 and has been in the auto body business since then, opening up his
own shop in 2005.
Peter is a lover of British sports cars and owns a 1972 Triumph TR6. His favorite Jaguars are the XK120/XK140/
XK150 sports cars due to their beautiful styling. When I visited his shop there were two Jaguar E-Types and a Bentley undergoing restoration and an Aston Martin DB5 getting body damage repaired due to an accident. There were also several others
cars of various makes and models getting collision repairs.
Peter enjoys doing a quality job repairing cars and really enjoys seeing his customers happy with the results. I can
speak personally about his work as he did a wonderful job in repainting my 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas last year. I was so pleased
with that work that I recently brought him my 1957 Jaguar MK VIII for a bare metal repaint. I will be reporting on the progress of that work in future issues of Jaguar Tracks.
As far as a shop policy, Peter says that “A Perfect Fix” is not only the name of his business, but also his motto. He
wants to make the repair as good as new so that the customer will be happy with the result and see it as a perfect fix. He
believes that his hands on experience and involvement in collision repair and restoration as well as his education and training
makes the difference in the quality of his work. His shop rates the I-CAR Collision and Repair Training Certification which
is the collision industry professional standard of excellence.
Peter has three employees that he characterizes as self starters who take great pride in their work and who especially
enjoy working on classic cars. His workers do most of the surface preparation and sanding while Peter does all of the painting himself. So when you take your car to A Perfect Fix Collision Center, Peter Hogenes will be working on and directly
supervising all the work on your car. If you call him and he’s in the paint booth painting a car, I hope you will understand.
Peter likes to think of his small team as full of enthusiasm and experience. He says that he can see his workers smile when
they work on some of the classic cars (including my 1957 MK VIII).

The shop at A Perfect Fix includes an office, a paint booth, a frame straightening set up, a lift and plenty of shop room to work
on several cars at a time. On my visits to A Perfect Fix I always find the shop neat and organized. This is no small feat for this kind
of business. A Perfect Fix works on an average of about 7-10 cars at a time. The day I visited there were 7 cars there. Some collision repairs only take a day or two, while major restoration work, like my 1957 MK VIII, may take several months to complete.
As Peter’s reputation for quality work has grown, local restoration shops have started to bring some of their work to Peter. He has
worked on approximately 15 Jaguar E-Types, 4 XK120/140s, and 3 XJ6’s including my 1984 XJ6 Vanden Plas, and another local
1972 Series I XJ6.
The most unusual car that Peter worked on was a 1959 Ferrari replica of an all aluminum Testarossa and a 1936 Packard
that he prepared for showing at Palm Springs. The most challenging and difficult work he did was the restoration of a 1970 Ford
Bronco that had sentimental value to the customer. The car was brought to Peter in pieces after another auto body shop failed to
complete the job. Peter worked closely with the customer and had to do a lot of research on the car in order to get it right since he
had never actually seen one of these cars before. The Bronco customer was very pleased with the final result.
Peter offers the following advice to San Diego Jaguar Club members:
1) Don’t let rust get out of hand. It’s best to have rust repaired as soon as you see it on your car.
The longer you delay, the worse it will get and the more expensive the repair will be. If you
see rust, it’s just the tip of the iceberg, especially if it’s in a hard to reach place where water
can sit (like the windshield channels of my 1984XJ6 VdP).
2) Use a good wax regularly on your car to protect the paint.
3) When getting your car repainted don’t try to save money on the quality of the paint that you get.
If you plan on keeping your car a while, insist on high quality paints. You will be happier with
the how your car looks initially and it will keep looking better longer. Peter will be pleased to
provide advice on the proper paint materials for your Jaguar.
Peter plans to keep providing the same level of high quality service and personal
attention to his details at his current location. If you need collision repairs, body work,
paint repair, rust repair or restoration please stop by and see Peter for a free estimate.
Remember that when you have a collision, you have the right to choose the repair facility.
A Perfect Fix is an excellent “one stop shop” for your Jaguar auto body work. Remember
to mention that you are a San Diego Jaguar Club member for the 10% discount.
A Perfect Fix is another one of the local businesses supporting our club and helping us
keep our Jaguars running and looking their best. Look to future issues of Jaguar Tracks
for profiles of other businesses that advertise in our newsletter and support our club.

Here are some questions Jaguar owners have recently asked and answers I provided based on my experience and research. If
you are handy and interested in working on your Jaguar, there are a lot of things that you can do to increase your knowledge
and enjoyment while reducing your cost of ownership. Purchase some shop manuals and tools, and start today. If you feel
that the work on your Jaguar is better left to the professionals, you should still learn more about how your Jaguar works so that
you will be better able to recognize problems as they occur and evaluate the recommendations of your professional service and
repair shop. The questions and answers in this column were taken from my recent emails exchanges with fellow Jaguar enthusiasts and members of www.Jag-Lovers.org and discussions with members of the San Diego Jaguar Club.
Q1: I have a problem with my XJ-6 in that fuel injectors numbers 4,5, & 6 are not firing. The engine starts, and runs smoothly
but it is only running on three cylinders and has a severe lack of power. When I checked the fuel injectors with a noid light, 1,
2, and 3 are firing, but 4, 5 and 6 are not. Owner 1987 XJ6.
A1: I had this identical problem (4, 5 and 6 fuel injectors not firing) last year after completing some engine work and verified
the problem by listening to each of the fuel injectors with a mechanics stethoscope. The loss of powerI experienced was dramatic and I clearly knew that something was wrong. After a careful review of the wiring diagrams for my car, I zeroed in on
the Lucas Power Resistor as a likely culprit. While I replaced the Power Resistor I also replaced the plastic connector as it was
cracked. Then I cleaned and lubricated all the male and female pins.
(Continued on Page 28)
JUNE 2008

After replacing the connector and Power Resistor from my spare parts car, the problem was fixed and it didn’t
return. I never conclusively determined that the Power Resistor was bad, so it could have been the bad connector or corrosion on the pins. I kept the original Power Resistor just in case it was still OK and the broken connector was the real
problem.
My money is on a loose or broken connector or a bad Power Resistor. It’s located on the right side of the engine
bay, beneath the air filter and attached to the fender wall. It’s a rectangular box about 2” X 5” with the words “LUCAS 2
PR Power Resistor” on it.

Q2: Can I swap the passenger side door lock cylinder into the driver’s side position on my XJ6 and still have the central
locking feature? It seems as though the cylinder is so worn that the key will no longer work, except to lock it (and that is
with a LOT of jiggling). The car will NOT unlock. Period. I fiddled with it for 20 minutes and finally unlocked the passenger side and crawled through. Owner 1986 XJ6
A2: I had a similar problem with my 1984 XJ6 VdP last year. I removed both door lock cylinders and was amazed at how
much gunk was inside the locks. I think the prior owners must have sprayed some kind of fluid in the locks to clean them
up but all it did was gum them up worse with dirt and dust. I recommend that you remove the interior panel on the driver’s
side door, remove the lock cylinder (it’s held on with three metal clips), clean it up with a spray cleaner, reinstall it, and
your XJ6 door lock will probably be as good as new. I don’t believe you will need to swap it with the passenger side, but
you can if you need to without affecting the central locking feature. BTW, don’t disassemble the lock to inspect the pins as
it will take a while to figure out how to put them back in the correct order. No need to ask how I know that. <grin>
