NFDA Crematory Operator Certification Course
- Mike Nicodemus, NFDA (6 CE)
Are you a funeral director who 1) uses a third party
crematory, 2) owns a crematory, or 3) is a crematory
operator? If you answered yes to any of these questions,
the NFDA Certified Crematory Operators (CCO) Program
is for you. This program will help you be better prepared
to answer families’ questions about cremation. Litigation
issues continue to rise. Protect yourself and your firm
from costly lawsuits. Presenter Mike Nicodemus who has
over forty years’ experience offers a unique perspective
on cremation from the funeral directors point of view.
Separate registration is required. Go to NFDA.org to
register online.
**This course is not included in the convention registration
price. Separate fees apply. You must register online.

Sarah is a nice Jewish girl with a problem: her mother wants
her married to a nice Jewish boy. Her mom has never met
her boyfriend, a WASP executive named Chris Kringle.
She tells her she is dating a Jewish doctor and Mom insists
on meeting him. Sarah plans a dinner party and, over
the heated protests of Chris, employs an escort service
to send her a Jewish date to be Dr. Steinberg. Instead,
they send Bob Schroder, an aspiring actor who agrees
to perform the impersonation. Happily, he is extremely
convincing in the role…so much so Sarah falls head over
heels in love with him!

When Death Sabotages the Holidays
- Harold Ivan Smith (1 CE)
Death pays no attention to the physical or cultural
calendar. Although songs proclaim, “It’s the most
wonderful time of the year,” death has a way of torpedoing
holidays---for client families and also for funeral directors
and their staff. Particularly troubling are deaths due to
violence, homicide and suicide. How do you keep a
foot in each reality: your professional life and your own
family celebrations of the holiday? Do you just “flip” an
imaginary switch as you leave your funeral home? Loss
during holidays can be a dual loss: loss of the loved one
and loss of beloved traditions, captured in one mother’s
lament, “We’ll never celebrate Christmas again!”
The Internet & Your Business: How to Protect Your
Reputation, Website Traffic & Visitor Data
- Ashley Montroy, FrontRunner (1.5 CE)
Have you ever taken the time to Google your funeral
firm? You might be quite surprised and even alarmed
with what you find. In today’s technology world,
knowledge is power and for the funeral profession,
your biggest competitor is no longer “the funeral home
up the street.” Leave with a snapshot of how you may
look to your families online and what can be done to
regain control of your online reputation, website traffic,
and visitor data.
Pre-Planning Your Estate and Business Succession Plan Don’t Let Your Funeral Home Business Die with You
- Christine DeMarea (1.5 CE)
Funeral Home owners constantly advise families to
plan ahead for their final arrangements. However, they
seldom follow this same advice and do not plan for their
own family and business. It is never too early to take steps
to assure that you have a succession plan in place. You
will learn innovative and practical business succession
techniques to protect your family and your business and
to assure that your funeral home will continue to serve the
families in your community.
Networking Luncheon - (1 CE)
What challenges do firms of similar size face? What
solutions have been found to overcome these obstacles?
This is a unique opportunity to discuss issues and concerns
with owners and employees of funeral homes of similar
size. Breakouts will be for firms with 0-75 cases, 76-200
cases and over 200 cases.
* $30 Ticket required
Marketing Cremation for Profitability
- Mike Nicodemus (2 CE KS, 1.75 CE NE)
Families that have chosen cremation for memorialization
and disposition know one thing. They know they want
cremation. Other than knowing they want cremation,
they don’t know what they want, or what their options
may be. This presentation will show funeral directors that
not all families are interested in direct cremation. Many
families are looking for value and are willing to pay a
higher premium to do business with companies that have
a reputation for high quality and great customer service.
Many of the suggestions made in this presentation will
help you provide the type of service and memorialization
options families are looking for but have no idea how to
go about making them happen. It will also cover funeral
directors’ misconceptions regarding cremation families
and the top ten customer service mistakes that you never
thought about.
KEYNOTE: The Magic of Influence
- Billy Riggs (2 CE KS, 1.75 CE NE)
Influence is magical. Its mystical power invisibly transfers
hope, encouragement and healing from giver to recipient.
This magical, moving and fun program will inspire you, as
funeral service professionals, to perform your job from your
heart resulting in greater job satisfaction, will equip you to
harness the power of attitude to combat emotional drain
and recharge their batteries and will refocus your priorities
to better serve families.
Grand Opening of Exhibit Hall - (1 CE)
Visit the exhibitors in the full exhibit hall and take the
opportunity to view their products and services. Be sure to
thank them for their support of our event.
Social Event
TopGolf, 10611 Nall Ave. (just blocks from the OPCC)
Come join us for an evening at TopGolf, the premier
golf entertainment complex, where the competition of
sport meets your favorite local hangout. Golf skills are not
required to have fun at TopGolf. Just picture a 240-yard
outfield with dartboard-like targets in the ground. The
closer to the center or “bull’s-eye” you get and the farther
out you hit your micro-chipped balls, the more points you
receive. Enjoy dinner, 200+ HDTVs and addictively fun
games which will provide something for everyone.

Why Funeral Directors Must be the Grief Experts
in Their Community
- Jason Troyer, Ph.D, Mt. Hope Grief Services (1.5 CE)
What if your firm was known throughout your community as
the best source for accurate and comforting information
about grief and funeral rituals? This presentation focuses
on cost-effective ways that funeral directors can provide
comforting information (NOT counseling) to families
in your community and build relationships with local
professionals (e.g., hospice, mental health professionals,
medical professionals, clergy. etc.).
Building a Funeral Home Marketing Plan to Educate,
Attract & Better Serve Families
- Ashley Montroy, FrontRunner Professional (1.5 CE)
An action-packed session that moves from the “why”
of online marketing to the “how.” Isn’t it time to truly
understand what your consumers want from your
business? Learn how to build a complete marketing plan
with a website that attracts families and your community,
a social media strategy that builds incredible relationships,
and an integrated approach that makes your online and
offline marketing work as one. If your goal is to generate
more traffic to your website and to your business through
search engines, social media and offline channels – all
while becoming the go-to death care resource in your
community, this session is for you. Start putting your time
and marketing dollars where you know you’ll get a great
return today.
Presidents Reception & Installation Banquet
Network with fellow funeral directors and enjoy dinner
and the installation of your officers with entertainment
from Dueling Pianos from Howl to the Moon.

From Scratch: Building a Successful Funeral Business from
the Ground Up - Doug Gober (2 CE)
If you were starting over, beginning with a blank sheet of
paper, a big pile of money and no preconceptions, what
kind of business would you design to serve 21st century
funeral customers? How would it compare to the funeral
home of today? Gober will look at all the elements that
would make up the new funeral business, including
facilities, staffing, products and services, plus the capital
required to put it all in place. He will look at what we could
learn from that funeral home or cemetery of tomorrow,
and how we can put it to work in our businesses today.
Best Practices in Crematory Operations 2016
- Ron Salvatore, Matthews International (2 CE)
Together we will study cremation trends, identify the
common red flags, watch a lighthearted “You Make
the Call” video on operating pitfalls and lastly, discover
a variety of best practice policies and procedures
for addressing both Front and Back Door disciplines.
Participants will receive a wealth of practical applications
for protecting their business and the families they serve.
This workshop is highly recommended for those who do
and those who do not own crematories. Course fulfills KS
crematory operator certification continuing education.
Protecting the Funeral Home’s Best Asset: Preventing
Burnout in Funeral Professionals
- Jason Troyer, Ph.D, Mt. Hope Grief Services (1 CE)
Funeral directors deal with death on a daily basis.
This presentation includes an overview of why funeral
directors experience burnout and discusses steps to
reduce compassion fatigue and burnout.
All Gowned Up...What’s Next?
- Karl Wenzel, CFSP, MBIE (2.5 CE KS, 2.25 CE NE)
This embalming seminar is designed to help you meet
today’s prep room challenges including the handling of
difficult cases subjected to advanced medical science
procedures and prolonged pharmacologic therapy. It
will also aide you in honing your embalming skills when
dealing with organ and tissue donation cases to create a
worry free open-casket visitation for families.
OMG! Did They Actually Bring Children to the
Funeral? Making Children “Welcomed Guests” in
Memorialization - Harold Ivan Smith (1 CE)
How did Americans decide “A funeral/memorial service
is no place for a child”? Historically, children have always
been welcomed at funerals until the last half-century.
Ritual and ritual participation are important vehicles for
children to navigate loss. Funeral directors can make
children welcomed guests in their funeral homes and in
memorialization.
*Continuing education pending approval by licensing
authorities.
