“I have been so blessed to
serve in the capacity that I’ve
been in,” Adley said during
the reception. “These seats
that we sit in down in Baton
Rouge, they’re not ours.
They’re yours. You as a constituent made it incredible
for us. You treated us well,
you treated us kindly. You’ve
made me so proud just to be
called your senator.”

fundraising event Monday,
Sept. 14. Museum board
members say this year was
another successful year,
raising near the $30,000
mark with large turnout of
guests.

said. “The museum is something everyone should be
proud of and is a jewel in our
parish crown.”
Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10
a.m. until 4 p.m. and closed
from 1 until 2 p.m. for lunch
and open on Saturday during
special downtown events.

LSU grants more academic criteria waivers
BATON ROUGE — To get
into LSU, students have to
score 22 or higher on the
ACT, with at least an 18 in
the English subsection and
19 in math, as well as receive
a 3.0 GPA in high school.
That is, unless they manage to get one of the university's rare waivers that allow
them to enroll without meeting the normal criteria.
According to documents
obtained by The Advocate
through a public records
request, the little-known
granting of admissions
waivers is on the rise at LSU.
Seventeen waivers were
granted during the 2012-13
school year. For this summer

and fall, at least 65 have been
granted, a few of them
through the university's
"Tiger Bridge" program that
allows students to live on
campus while taking classes
through Baton Rouge Community College.
The university received 94
requests for the current
school year. That number
also is up, from about 24
requested in 2012-13 school
year.

granted admission are identified as requesting waivers
because they are athletes,
though no other details are
provided.

Irene, affectionately known as
“Mama Rene” to so many, passed away
on Sept. 20 after a lengthy illness. The
fifth of seven children, Irene was born
on June 18, 1921 in Livingston, Kentucky. During her childhood, her family
would move from Livingston to Crab
Orchard, Kentucky and finally settling
down in Maysville, Kentucky, where
Irene graduated from Maysville High
School.
Irene would move to Dayton, Ohio to
serve as a war time civil service employee at Wright Field, where she worked in
the incoming classified mail section. It
was while working in this office that she
met Captain Wayne Williams who had
recently returned from duty overseas
and would eventually become her husband of 55 years.
After the war, Irene would move with
her husband to Shongaloo, where they
began their family. The family moved
and settled in Minden after Wayne
became principal of East Side Elemen-

young boy, his mother and
father worked on my daddy’s
farm. They had a house up on
the hill out east of Haynesville. They lived there for
a long time.”

An admissions committee, made up of faculty, is
given the final say and doesn't always go along with the
admissions office's recommendation.
Aside from athletes, the
documentation can be vague
on reasons for waiver
requests. Some are simply
identified as "academic
issue" or "personal extenuat-
tary (later renamed Richardson Elementary). Mama Rene would serve as
secretary of Richardson Elementary for
one year, before serving as the secretary
at Minden High School for 34 years,
retiring in 1986. During her years at
Minden High, she touched the lives of
more than 6,175 students, serving them
at various times as nursemaid, motheraway-from-home, adviser, confidante
and friend. As a thank you, the students
named her “Teacher of the Year” in 1986
upon her retirement and was honored
by the City of Minden by having May 21,
1986 named “Irene Williams Day.”
She served Minden High and the
community in numerous activities such
as soliciting and compiling ads for the
Tide football program, working at
American Legion baseball games and
various Minden High School athletic
events. She was a loyal fan of the Crimson Tide, never missing a home football
game until her health did not allow her
to attend.
She was a member and former president of the Wiley-Pevy American Legion
Post 74 Ladies’ Auxiliary. She was a
member of First Baptist Church, where
she was part of the Dorcas Sewing Mission Group.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Wayne Wynn Williams; parents, Nathaniel Grover Botkins and
Norma Louise Bailey Botkins; brother,
Herman Everett Botkins; sister Lois
Botkins Parrett; brother, Andrew
“Brown” Botkins; sister, Ruby Botkins
Speasl Yon; brother, James Botkins and
brother Horace Botkins.

Johnson was not a graduate of Louisiana State Uni-
versity, but he was instrumental in starting the Webster Parish alumni chapter
and scholarship fund for the
university. He eventually
went on to serve as a member
of the LSU Alumni board.
He was a faithful member
of First United Methodist
Church in Minden.
He is survived by his wife
of 63 years, Annie Laura
Johnson, one son, one brother, one sister and a host of
other relatives and friends.

Refuge adding
kids’ play area

Wildlife Refuge is building
a children's play area with
about a dozen outdoor sections.
The Nature Discovery
Area's first phase is
expected to be ready for
the northwest Louisiana
refuge's open house on
Oct. 17, and a public meeting Monday at the visitor
center
southeast
of
Shreveport will describe
the plans and show people
what has been done so far,

"How else might a kid
find out if they like the
outdoors and want to consider a profession in it
unless they come to an
area like this?" U.S. Fish

place where kids can come

with chalk is already in
place. Behind it is a small
wooden stage where kids

"Fire ants, snakes and
poison ivy might appear
scary to some people who
don't spend a lot of time in
the outdoors," Young said.
"We're trying to provide
an area where those things
are at a minimum."
The site is in woods
near the refuge's visitor
center.
"We want families to
come out and enjoy this
area on their own and we
also want it to be something school groups can
take a field trip to," Young
said.
The refuge is relatively
new — the first property
was acquired in 2002, and
the visitor and education
center
southeast
of
Shreveport opened in
2012.
Red River National
Wildlife Refuge is made up
of four units in the Red
River Valley in northwestern Louisiana. The Headquarters Unit is in Bossier
and Caddo Parishes, the
Bayou Pierre Unit is in
Desoto and Red River
Parishes, and the Lower
Cane Unit and the Spanish
Lake Lowlands Unit are in
Natchitoches Parish.
Volunteers are doing
much of the work on the
Nature Discovery Area.

Jets move to 2-0
with win over Colts
INDIANAPOLIS (AP)
— Todd Bowles is keeping
the Jets grounded.
Sure, they're off to their
first 2-0 start since 2011, the
defense forced five more
turnovers Monday night
against Andrew Luck and, of
course, the New York fans
are already revving up for
more after a 20-7 win at
Indianapolis. Bowles knows
there's still a lot of work to be
done.
"It's a good win, but it's
only win No. 2," the firstyear Jets coach said after a
20-7 victory at Indianapolis.
"We're not where we want to
be, but we're on the way."
The defense might not be
able to get much better.
New York already has
five takeaways in the first
two games and has scored 31
points off those miscues after
producing only 20 points all
of last season.
The reason is that they've
been able to relentlessly pressure quarterbacks and lock
down outside receivers with
their two veteran cornerbacks, Darrelle Revis and
Antonio Cromartie, who
played Monday on a sore
knee.
But there was plenty to
critique about the Jets'
offense, which struggled to
seal the game until the closing minutes.
Ryan Fitzpatrick was 22
of 34 for 244 yards with two
touchdowns and one interception in his first win at
Lucas Oil Stadium, Brandon
Marshall caught seven passes for 101 yards and one TD
and Eric Decker caught eight
passes for 97 yards and a TD
before leaving with a knee
injury.
"It wasn't a pretty win, but
we'll take it," Marshall said.
"We've got a long way to go."
So do the Colts who
failed to score in the first half
for the second straight week
— something they last did in
consecutive games in 1997.
Indy is 0-2 for second
consecutive season, but this
time seems a lot different.
After going 21 of 37 for 250
yards with one touchdown
and three interceptions, Luck
has now thrown five picks in
the first two weeks. He also
lost a fumble to the Jets.
Fitzpatrick's 6-yard TD
pass to Decker and a 35-yard
field goal from Nick Folks
made it 10-0 at halftime.
Luck finally answered
with a 26-yard touchdown
pass to Donte Moncrief early
in the fourth quarter, but
Fitzpatrick threw a 15-yard
TD pass to Marshall and
Folk made a 46-yard field
goal to close out the scoring.
The Glenbrook Lady Apaches
recently wrapped up their regular season schedule with a dominant 18-0 win over the River
Oaks Lady Mustangs.
The win moved Glenbrook’s
regular season record to 19-8
and 6-4 in district play, a solid
first season under the direction
of former North Webster Lady
Knights head coach, Anthony
Mullins.
“I know one thing,” Mullins
said about Glenbrook’s fall
schedule. “It’s too hot when you
start this fall ball. But, this
year’s group is very young, we
have just one senior in Carsin
Spurlock who has really done a
great job of leading this team.
We have a lot of young talent on
this team; the future looks
bright for Glenbrook softball.”
The Apaches starting pitcher
all season long was Alyssa
Martin, an eighth grader, and
they will turn to her for a big
game when the Apaches begin
the playoffs this weekend.
In addition to Martin,
Glenbrook has seventh grader
Hannah Mosley, eighth grader
Amber Lovitt, freshmen Aubrie
Dickson and Faith Earnhardt,
sophomores Kara Bryce and
Kate Marvin and junior Megan
Sims all playing key roles on
this year’s team.
“I’m really proud of them,”
Mullins said. “We don’t know
who we’re going to be playing
yet, but I’m looking forward to
South State and seeing how this
young team plays.”
The Apaches most likely
matchup will be against tournament host Amite School
Center, located in Liberty,
Mississippi.
If his young group keeps their
composure, Mullins believes
Glenbrook can beat anyone in
the tournament.
“I believe we can play with
most teams,” Mullins said. “This
time of year, anything is possible. I know is the future is bright
for Glenbrook softball, but we
want to see what we can do this
year.”

Episcopal Round Table
Run.
One of the biggest
meets in Baton Rouge
featured most of the
best runners in the state.
The girls' three-mile
varsity division was led
by Alicia Stamey of
Episcopal High School
who ran a 18:33.
Finishing second was
eighth grader Claire
Vaughn of Menard at
18:46. Lakeside's Alissa
Lander took third at
19:22. Tynia Joiner finished 135th at 25:10.
There were 206 runners
in this division over the

putting out trail cameras on
deer trails, killing wasps in
my deer stand et al.

been too blasted hot and it’s
hard to get motivated for
hunting seasons when
you’re getting dizzy with

will pull off the road before
dawn and park their vehicles a considerable distance
from the woods they plan to
squirrel hunt. Sometimes a
hunter’s heart will leap into
his throat and his mouth
goes dry when a deer snorts
nearby in the darkness and
runs off. The alert squirrel
hunter will make a note of
that spot, perhaps placing a
piece of tissue on a branch
along the trail so he can
scout the area in daylight
after the squirrel hunt is
over.
It could be a thicket
where deer are bedded; it
could be a grove of acornbearing oaks where deer are
feeding. A real bonus is to
find such an area that is also
dotted with fresh rubs and
scrapes.
Don’t worry if you get so
involved in looking for deer
sign that you forget to look
for squirrels. They’ll be
bugging the daylights out of
you when you’re sitting on
your deer stand.

relentlessly pursued by photographers is stepping into
their shoes for his latest
movie role.
British heartthrob Robert
Pattinson plays photographer Dennis Stock in Anton
Corbijn's "Life" - which follows
the
relationship
between Stock and a young
James Dean (played by Dane
Dehaan) who is on the brink
of superstardom.
The 29-year-old Pattinson
talked to The Associated
Press about the transition
from celebrity to photographer and the onset of fame
after his roles in the blockbuster "Harry Potter" and
"Twilight" film series. "Life"
comes out on Friday in the
United Kingdom and Dec. 4
in the U.S.
Q: "You spend your life in
front of the camera, how was
it to be behind the camera?"
PATTINSON: "It is
interesting to feel the power
trip, especially when I was
shooting the scene on the red
carpet, when you are part of
the massive throng of people,
and not only are you part of
the crowd and hidden but
you have something you can
hide your own face (with).
You just see all the pressure
is on someone else. It is kind
of nice, you feel all secure in
your little pack. It is very different."
Q: "Did it spark an interest in photography? Are you
now a budding photographer
or were you interested in
photography before the
film?"
PATTINSON: "I wasn't
really interested in photography before. And then I started shooting on the same

about 20 rolls of film, and
then got them all developed,
and I was really into it before
I saw the photos. I really
thought that when someone
tells you the fundamentals
you think that it's all going to
come out and be amazing.
When they're not you like 'I
don't understand why aren't
they like genius photos?' I
kind of lost interest afterwards."
Q: "What is interesting is
Dean's journey ... he is on the
brink of fame and he is considering the impact that fame
is going to have on his life.
Was there a moment like that
with you?"
PATTINSON: "No. I
guess Dean had, in the movie
anyway, a very strong idea of
how he wanted to be and
what he felt it was going to
be. Whereas I didn't have any
idea like what was going on
at all. The first period of getting famous was incredibly
strange to me and really fun
at the beginning because you
didn't realise the consequences of anything. You
could say or do whatever you
wanted and it just didn't
matter. I only really realised
what being famous was about
three years after I got
famous, four years afterwards."
Q: "When you are choosing your roles, do you consider your fan base?
PATTINSON: "I don't
think about it at all. I will go
through periods where I will
think 'Oh maybe I should do
a commercial movie' and
then I just think, someone
gave me a really great piece
of advice, someone from my
agency weirdly, they said the
only clients that are happy
are the ones that just do what
they want to do. ... So I just
kind of do everything for
myself."
Q: "If you could hang out
with Dean for a day, what
would you do?"
PATTINSON: "I would
take a bunch of photos of him
because then you would have
a whole career, sell a bunch
and license them out afterwards. I don't know, he's just
a 23-year-old guy. He would
probably be really annoying."
