Six months into my post as President & CEO of The Kempe
Foundation I am still amazed by the dedication of volunteers,
staff and especially of the work performed by the professionals
at The Kempe Center. The work they do to help treat abused
and neglected children is inspirational and I am honored to
be part of an organization that truly makes such a positive
difference in the lives of children.
One of the highlights during my time at Kempe is the huge
outpouring of support we received during Child Abuse
Prevention Month. Our Kempe superheroes entertained
and educated people about the issues of child abuse on
television and in print. Giant blue ribbons adorned many of
Denver and Aurora’s most prominent buildings to promote
abuse prevention and awareness. The Colorado General
Assembly and Governor Hickenlooper recognized the month
with resolutions and proclamations. More than 500 people
celebrated in Parisian style to support a great cause during
our Kempe Takes Paris event. Nearly 10,000 individuals came
together to walk or run to combat child abuse and support
Kempe’s powerful mission during the Cherry Creek Sneak. We
are very grateful for the support we received before, during
and continue to receive after Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Despite a successful April, we need to remember that child
abuse prevention efforts must take place all year long.
I’m pleased to announce that the next few months will bring
exciting new changes to Kempe.
The Kempe Center’s new executive director, Dr. Des Runyan
joins us in August. Dr. Runyan will review, evaluate and
revise programs with the goal of serving
even more children. He plans to expand the
Center’s mental health services and under his
direction, The Kempe Center will continue
to provide the best services available to help
abused and neglected children.
Within The Kempe Foundation, we are

changing and growing. In May, we hired
Tracie Sheppard, our new Vice President of Development,
whose team building skills and dynamic enthusiasm will bring
new energy to the organization. We also have a new team of
dedicated volunteers serving as our first points of contact at
the front desk.
The Kempe Foundation Alliance and Champs groups are also
expanding with new leadership, events and opportunities to
help abused and neglected children treated at Kempe. We
encourage everyone to become more involved in these groups.
We look forward to your continued support of Kempe as we
continue to evolve and grow. Support from people like you
makes possible the work we do at Kempe. Thank you for
putting smiles on all of our faces and even more importantly,
giving hope to our children.

Work Dean’s Award
Des Runyan, MD, has been named the
new executive director of The Kempe
Center for the Prevention and Treatment
of Child Abuse and Neglect. A professor
of social medicine and pediatrics at the
University of North Carolina School of
Medicine, Runyan’s expertise in child
abuse is recognized nationally and
internationally.
The University of Denver Graduate
School of Social Work (GSSW)
honored eight longtime supporters
of the school with Dean’s Awards.

13 reception and dinner honoring
the 80th anniversary of GSSW’s
founding. Dean’s Award recipients

provided nearly 100 GSSW student
internships.
Therapeutic Preschool to
Suspend Services
After much evaluation, The Kempe
Center has determined that services
of The Kempe Therapeutic Preschool
are no longer sustainable in its
present form and as a result, will
suspend preschool day treatment
services as of September 1, 2011.
Expanded evidence-based mental
health services including preschoolage programs are being developed.
The Kempe Therapeutic Preschool
will continue to admit and treat
preschoolers in need until September
1. At that time, the Preschool will
work with community partners and
insurance providers to transition
children to appropriate agencies for
continued care.

Runyan will lead an institution that is
well-known in Colorado and throughout
the world for its work on behalf of
children. The Kempe Center is located
adjacent to The Children’s Hospital on
the Anschutz Medical Campus.
“My goal is to nurture what we have
while helping the center explore new
territory,” Runyan said. “For example,
we have a good understanding of the risk
factors leading to abuse. The next step is
to design, test and expand approaches to
preventing abuse in the first place.”
“I envision The Kempe Center as a
place that produces nationally and even
internationally prominent research to
address the causes and consequences of
child abuse and its prevention. I also see
it as a beacon for effective treatment.
And Kempe, in partnership with a great
children’s hospital and a great university,
needs to build specialized mental health
services to match its research and medical
expertise.”
Runyan’s expertise includes helping
children recover not only from physical
abuse but from what that abuse does to
their mental health.
Nearly 800,000 children are reported as
having been abused or neglected in this
country each year, including more than
11,000 kids in Colorado.
“He is a national leader in child abuse and
neglect,” Stephen Daniels, MD, chairman
of the University of Colorado School of
Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics, said
of Runyan. “His outstanding record of
achievement and sense of mission show
that he will be a great addition here.”

Runyan received his MD and his MPH
from the University of Minnesota, and
a DrPH from the University of North
Carolina School of Public Health. He was
a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar.
Along with his UNC post he is the
national program director of the Robert
Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program.
University of Colorado School of
Medicine Dean Richard Krugman, MD
said that, as a former director of The
Kempe Center, he is especially glad to
see Runyan, “a wonderful physicianscholar,” in that role.
“We proudly welcome Dr. Runyan
as head of The Kempe Center,” said
Jim Shmerling, president and CEO
of The Children’s Hospital. “Under
his leadership, we anticipate even
greater advances in the prevention
and treatment of abuse in children. Dr.
Runyan’s international reputation will
undoubtedly bring greater attention to
this crucial prevention effort.”
Runyan, who starts his new job in
August, will serve as a professor of
pediatrics in the medical school. His wife,
Carol, will be a professor in the Colorado
School of Public Health and will work
closely on injury prevention efforts with
the CHAI Program (Children’s Health
Advocacy Institute) at The Children’s
Hospital.

IP5280’s 6th Annual Climbing for Kids to ascent Mount Bierstadt for
children’s foundations on August 12; Climbers hope to raise $100,000

According to Karen Pearl, IP5280, the
climb is not just about a couple hundred
people getting together to climb a
14er for a cause, it’s so much more. It
is a miracle to see the faces of people
of all ages when they have reached
the summit. The incredible sense of
accomplishment of standing more than
14,000 feet above sea level is a feeling
of self determination and self confidence
that is just indescribable.
Last year, a 13-year-old boy named
Marc signed up to climb the mountain.
He always wanted to climb a 14er
and had tried before, making it about
halfway. He was more determined than
ever because he had a huge cheering
section and an incredible team helping
him out with every step. Climbing a
14er is a challenging feat for anyone,
but what makes Marc’s story even more
amazing is that he has Cystic Fibrosis
and he climbed the mountain with two
oxygen tanks carried by his father. It
was challenging, but he made it to the
summit. Marc inspired everyone that
climbed that day and reminded us that
anything is possible.
To be part of such a wonderful event
that helps two incredible charities while
simultaneously supporting the physical
and emotional well being of each
participant is a win-win.
About the Climb
IP5280’s 6th Annual Climbing for Kids
event will raise money for The Children’s
Hospital Foundation and The Kempe
Foundation during its annual mountain
climb at 6 a.m. on August 12 at Mount
Bierstadt.
The climb will raise funds for both of
the children’s foundations through
sponsorships, participant registration and
donations. This year’s fundraising goal

Last year, more than 220 climbers
participated in the event, raising nearly

IP5280’s Climbing for Kids event is

Child Abuse Prevention Month 2011 in Review
Events and Activities
Cherry Creek Sneak
The Kempe Foundation received pledges and donations from the 29th
Annual Cherry Creek Sneak, raising more than $34,000! Kempe also had
over 700 individual donations and more than 20 teams pledge their support.
Top fundraising teams included: Team Kruljac for Kids, Team Camacho,
2Thrive4Babies, Team Georgia, and Rezal’s Rezalution.
Kempe Takes Paris
More than 500 individuals celebrated in Parisian style and attended Kempe Takes
Paris on April 8 at the Denver Marriott City Center. The event grossed more than
$360,000 for The Kempe Foundation. The special appeal raised nearly $90,000.
Team Kruljac for Kids was the top
fundraising team for the Sneak, raising
over $10,000 for Kempe.
Guests strolled through the streets of Paris and enjoyed an elegant dinner and
show. During dinner, The Kempe Foundation also honored the 2011 Kempe
Community Award recipient Jeannie Ritter, Former Colorado First Lady and
Kempe Professional Award recipients Dr. Stephen and Elaine Berman.
Lighting Ceremony
To kickoff Child Abuse Prevention Month, The Children’s Hospital in conjunction
with Kempe lit the blue lights along Children’s Way on March 31.

Crowd at Kempe Takes Paris
News Stories and Public Service Announcements
The public service awareness campaign continued through April 2011 with television,
radio, magazine and newspaper features and advertisements. Kempe’s media partner
KMGH 7 showed two success stories.
In addition to the news stories, KMGH 7 ran a series of 15 second public service
announcements featuring the 2011 Kempe Superheroes: Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado
Rockies; Brian Dawkins, Denver Broncos; Dr. Evie Dennis, Community Leader; Mary
Lou Makepeace, Community Leader; and Patricia Barela Rivera, Community Leader.
Kempe also distributed its superhero public service announcement to all television
stations in Denver and Colorado Springs and created a new success stories video,

Blue Ribbons
Kempe placed giant blue ribbons on buildings throughout the Denver Metro Area
including the Capitol, City & County Building, Pepsi Center, The Children’s Hospital,

Kempe distributed hundreds of blue ribbon magnets, wristband keychains, blue
ribbon pins, brochures, flyers, handouts and information about Kempe and CAPM.

Success Story: Making the Right Call

The Kempe Center’s expert staff know
how to recognize child abuse and how
to spot when it is not abuse. Here is
an example of how The Kempe Child
Protection Team (CPT) work reminds
us that community providers and
human services caseworkers often
need expert help.
Recently, parents brought their infant
son to the emergency room in a local
hospital. The baby was brought in
for what was thought to be a minor
physical ailment; he had a cough and
fever.
As part of the physician’s work up,
the doctor ordered a chest x-ray. The
x-ray showed possible rib fractures.
Rib fractures like these are concerning
and can indicate physical abuse for
a child at this age, so the emergency
room called county social services
to report suspected abuse. The
emergency room physician would
not commit to the diagnosis when
questioned by social services staff who
responded to the hospital.
As a result of the family’s history
with social services for high risk social
issues and questions about the x-ray
findings, the social worked called
Kempe’s CPT and asked for a review
of the record and x-ray. Within 24
hours, CPT and medical colleagues in
pediatric radiology at The Children’s
Hospital reviewed the case and they
ruled out any fractures. CPT’s quick
consult response and communication
with the caseworker and the baby’s
primary care provider assured that
the correct diagnosis was made. The
baby remained in the home and the
family continued to receive support
services. The best possible outcome
in a case like this was to show that no
child abuse occurred and that a family
who has needs gets support from
social services and the primary care
provider.
According to Andrew Sirotnak, MD,
FAAP, CPT Director, about half of
all cases his team sees are ruled out
as child physical or sexual abuse.
“Confirmed cases of child severe
physical abuse are more common at
The Children’s Hospital main campus
due to its status as a Level 1 Regional
Pediatric Trauma Center and we get
many of these severe cases. We tend
to see minor cases reported from
other local hospitals and then referred
to CPT by care providers and social
services, because those hospitals
do not have a coordinated expert
team like ours.” CPT therefore has
the ability to reach any area of the
state when someone needs help.
Dr. Sirotnak is also evaluating the
possibility of outreach clinics as part
of a growing network of care for
Children’s Hospital Colorado.
About Kempe Child Protection Team
The Kempe Child Protection
Team (CPT) is the only hospitalbased multidisciplinary child abuse
program in Colorado. CPT offers
comprehensive, multidisciplinary
consultation, assessment, treatment,
and referral services for children and
adolescents who may have been
physically or sexually abused or
neglected. Sensitive care is provided
by dedicated clinicians to help the
community identify, treat and console
child abuse victims and their families.
The CPT physicians are among the
first in the country to be boardcertified in the field of Child Abuse
Pediatrics by the American Board of
Pediatrics.
In FY2010, the Kempe Child
Protection Team treated 494 children,
which was more than a 22 percent
increase from 401 in FY2009.
The Team is now in its 53rd year
of excellence in the field. Dr. C.
Henry Kempe started CPT, one of
the country’s first child protection
teams, in 1958 at
University Hospital.

University of Colorado Honors Kempe Center’s Evelin Gomez,
PhD with Diversity Recognition Award for Faculty Leadership

The Kempe Center’s Evelin Gomez,
PhD received the 2011 University of
Colorado Denver-Anschutz Medical
Campus Chancellor’s Diversity
Recognition Award for Faculty
Leadership during the Chancellor’s
Diversity Recognition Award Luncheon
on April 15. The award honors
her extraordinary leadership and
commitment to diversity efforts on the
UCD-Anschutz Medical Campus.
These awards honor individuals and/
or groups who have demonstrated
extraordinary efforts in recruiting and
retaining diverse faculty, students
and staff, in curriculum innovation, in
research, in practice and in promoting
a more respectful, civil community that
honors and respects diversity.
Dr. Gomez is a member of The Kempe
Center’s Judicial Access to Services
for Parent Infant/Child Relationship
Enhancement (J-ASPIRE) team, which
works to treat trauma-exposed children
to ensure that these children have the
best outcomes and do not become
abusers themselves. She recently
received training as a certified home
visitor in SafeCare.
In addition, Dr. Gomez chairs the Kempe
Cultural Competence Committee, which
received a diversity grant from the
university that enabled the creation of
the Words Are Power mural, currently
on display in various locations around
the Anschutz Campus.

Dr. Gomez previously worked for the

ISPCAN Hosts Inaugural International Round-Table at Kempe Center
The International Society for Prevention
of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN)
held an inaugural round-table, “Child
Sexual Abuse: A Review of Practical
Interventions from an International
Perspective” May 5-6, 2011 at the
ISPCAN headquarters located within the
Gary Pavilion at The Children’s Hospital,
Anschutz Medical Campus. The purpose
of the round-table was to better address
how different countries and cultures can
assist children who have been sexually
abused.
This event, made possible by funding
from the Oak Foundation, assembled
local, regional and international experts
from 15 countries. Presenters included
Dr. Arnon Bentovim (UK), Judge Carlos
Rozanski (Argentina), Dr. Bernard
Gerbaka (Lebanon), and Mr. John E.B.
Myers, J.D. (USA).

Round-table discussions
The group re-examined “best practice”
that has been presented in published
literature from the perspective of
countries and cultures that have
different priorities, resources, beliefs,
and/or points of view. They reviewed
what is known about the outcomes of
these efforts and presented evidence
as to what interventions are available
and should be considered from an
international perspective. At the end of
the round-table, a working paper on
“Options for Responding to Child Sexual
Abuse” was prepared and will ultimately
be published by ISPCAN. The hope is
that this pilot initiative will be the first of
what will become a biennial round-table
on specific clinical issues.
Corporate Spotlight: US Bank, Committed to

Although the majority of nonprofits receive grants, government
funding, contributions from individuals, foundations, special
events and in-kind gifts; they are not enough to maintain
operations and meet the needs of the organization’s
mission. Nonprofits continue to face mounting demand on
their resources and because of this, their sustainability and
effectiveness in serving the community is threatened. That’s
why it is vitally important for nonprofits to also receive the
support of local businesses and corporations.
Fortunately for The Kempe Foundation, over the years we have
enjoyed tremendous support from the business community and
today we recognize U.S. Bank for its leadership in this area.
U.S. Bank believes that, “When people work together, great

partners who understand the needs of individuals, families
and organizations, and match their resources with those
community needs. Through these collaborations, families can
find affordable places to call home, people can gain job skills,
kids from diverse backgrounds can achieve in school, and the
wealth of the arts can become more accessible to everyone.
Mr. Hassan Salem, President of U.S. Bank in Denver, is an
advocate for children having shown his commitment to our
efforts through the financial support that U.S. Bank extends to
the many programs and services offered through The Kempe
Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and
Neglect. Mr. Salem has also been a valued advisor to Kempe
and solidifies this commitment by helping to insure that U.S.
Bank senior management lends their expertise to The Kempe
Foundation Board of Directors.
Currently, Kareina Westlund, Regional Manager and Senior
Vice President with U.S. Bank, serves on the Kempe Board.
Most recently, Ms. Westlund stepped into a Kempe volunteer
leadership role as the Chair of our Sponsorship Committee
for the April gala – Kempe Takes Paris. She also secured a
major sponsorship from U.S. Bank for the event, which overall
grossed more than $360,000. Augmenting financial support,
U.S. Bank employees volunteer tens of thousands of hours in
their communities and directly to a wide range of nonprofit
organizations.
U.S. Bank teams give their time in constructing and improving
homes for deserving individuals and commit to individual
efforts such as tutoring a student. In fact, U.S. Bank actively
encourages volunteer efforts by providing paid time off for
employees through their Five
Star Volunteer Program. In
2010, U.S. Bank employees
donated thousands of hours
of paid volunteer time
through this program.
To assist Kempe in spreading
its message of hope and
healing for abused and
neglected children, U.S.
Bank has joined efforts with
Kempe in our “Superheroes”
Hassan Salem as a Kempe
campaign. The campaign
Superhero
utilizes Kempe’s ongoing
theme of empowering children, but with a celebrity twist. Past
campaigns have included former Colorado Rockies star, Vinny
Castilla; former Denver Broncos pro-bowler, Rod Smith; former
Broncos coach, Mike Shanahan; and John Michael Liles of the
Colorado Avalanche. This year’s celebrities included Rockies
slugger, Carlos Gonzales and future Broncos Hall of Famer,
Brian Dawkins. All of the celebrities donned capes and other
hero attire and then appeared in public service announcements.
Through the generous support of KMGH7, the public service
announcements have been viewed by hundreds of thousands
of Denver and Colorado area residents. The Superheroes
campaign is made possible through the generous support of
U.S. Bank and none other than U.S. Bank Denver President,
Hassan Salem, also joined the fun appearing in public service
announcements that aired in 2009.
The Kempe Foundation is proud to recognize the support of

New Volunteer Opportunities at Foundation and Center
Reception Desk Volunteer
The Kempe Foundation is currently seeking individuals for the
Reception Desk Volunteer position. The volunteer position
supports the charitable work of The Kempe Foundation by
serving as the front desk receptionist for Kempe in the Gary
Pavilion greeting clients and visitors and answering phone calls.
Volunteers will provide coverage for the front reception desk
approximately 4-5 hours per week; greet all clients and visitors
to Kempe; answer main phone lines for The Kempe Foundation
and The Kempe Center; route calls to the appropriate party;
maintain neat and orderly appearance of the Main Lobby
and Waiting Area; accept deliveries that come to the front
desk and notify the appropriate party; and reserve Kempe
conference rooms and building-owned audio-visual equipment
as requested.

J-ASPIRE Volunteers
Kempe Judicial Access to Services for Parent Infant Relationship
Enhancement (J-ASPIRE) program, along with JI-DEF partner
Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities (TASC),
interacts with children and families in many settings where
volunteers are welcome. These include multi-family group
therapy nights, fun social and sober family activity nights, and
adult focus group sessions.

together, working with kids and/or families served by
Kempe in fun settings.
Deb Vance, a Kempe Reception Desk Volunteer, helps sort
letters for a mailing.
• An individual interested in facilitating therapeutic breakout
groups and/or activity time with children.
• A retired/volunteer professional from a mental health or
child abuse prevention-related field able to contribute his
or her services to Kempe.
• A skilled musician or artist looking to teach free lessons to
kids.
• An individual or group interested in cooking or sponsoring
dinner for families attending group therapy nights.

The Kempe Foundation is pleased to announce the
appointment of a new board member. We are honored to
have this incredible representative from the philanthropic
community join Kempe.
Patrice Gendelman is the Author/CEO of “Hannah Rose
Knows” LLC. She is the author of the “Hannah Rose Knows”
e-book series and Planet-Soul. She published “Expecting
Etiquette” a comical book about pregnancy and wrote three
screenplays. Ten percent of proceeds from Planet-Soul will go
to The Kempe Foundation.
She volunteered for seven years in the Kempe
Therapeutic Preschool. Gendelman is also a
supporter of Tumaini Hope and The Joshua
School. She is a mother of five, married to Jim
Gendelman.
We welcome this community leader to Kempe

The Kempe Foundation receives support
from generous organizations throughout
the year. Foundations, government
agencies and corporations make it
possible for The Kempe Foundation and
Center to provide programs and services
as we work toward the ultimate goal of
bringing an end to child abuse. Major
gifts and grants ($25,000 and above)
received from January 1 to March
31, 2011 designated for the general
operations and programs of The Kempe
Foundation and The Kempe Center
include:
The Ludlow-Griffith Foundation’s
unrestricted major grant to Kempe will be
used to serve children and their families/
caregivers, train professionals, and
promote public awareness and advocacy
in our vision to end child abuse and
neglect.
The Colorado Health Foundation
has approved a three-year grant,
Development of Integrated Behavioral
Health Services (DIBS), to identify and
address the behavioral health needs of
children in foster care in metropolitan
Denver. A growing body of research has
shown that through early intervention
behavioral health care providers can
improve children’s readiness to learn
at school and decrease the risk for
many adult diseases including mental
illness. Partners in the grant are the
Denver Department of Human Services/
Division of Child Welfare Services,
Access Behavioral Care, Denver
Health’s Connections for Kids Clinic
at the Eastside Clinic, and the Mental
Health Center of Denver. Each of these
organizations brings unique skills and
responsibilities to this project.
The Walter S. and Lucienne Driskill
Foundation has awarded Kempe funding
for a new clinical research program,
“Physical Abuse: Clinical Treatment
and Neurobiological Mechanisms.”
Physically abusive parents will learn new
parenting skills and their abused children
will acquire new emotion regulation skills
in order to decrease
subsequent abuse and
improve the children’s
serious behavioral
problems. In the
second component of
the program, we will
test, using modern
neuroimaging tools, if physically abusive
parents demonstrate atypical brain
activity when trying to regulate anger,
as almost all physical abuse reflects out
of control anger. This could provide the
first insight into how the brain works in
adults who have physically abused their
children.
Kempe’s collaborating partners are the
Denver Department of Human Services/
Division of Child Welfare Services and
the University of Colorado, Boulder. Our
hope is that this kind of research can be
used to develop the next generation of
interventions to reduce child abuse in the
United States.

Did you know that most Americans do not have a written will?
Estimates vary – some say about 41 percent of Americans have
completed their estate planning by drafting a will – others say
as few as 3 in 10 Americans have written wills!
There are two very compelling reasons to have a written will:
to protect those you love, and to provide peace of mind for
you and your loved ones. If you die without making a will, the
state in which you live will decide what to do with your assets.
But your state does not know who or what is important to you,
and might make decisions to distribute your assets in ways that
you would never choose. The only way to prevent this from
happening is by preparing a properly drafted will, a legally
binding and organized plan that reflects your most personal
intentions. Preparing a will also allows us to think about the
things that are most important to us, such as family, friends
and important charitable causes.
Once you have decided what is right for you and your loved
ones, you may wish to leave money to charity through a
bequest. There are several types to consider:
• A General Bequest indicates a specific dollar amount
payable to a specific charitable organization.
• A Specific Bequest is a specific asset that you wish to
contribute from your estate.
• A Restricted Bequest must be used for a specific project or
program of interest to you.
• A Residuary Bequest instructs that, after all debts, taxes,
expenses, and any general and specific bequests have been
paid, all or a portion of your remaining assets be directed
to one or more charities.
• A Contingent Bequest provides a gift to one or more
charities if your intended beneficiary dies before you do.
It is wise to consult with your attorney or financial planner
when organizing your estate plans. Please inform Kempe of
your planned gift so that we can be certain your intentions are
understood and recognize you as a Kempe Society member.
