The Gondwana Collection we know today is the result of a dream. A dream about the preservation of land. We wished to protect our environment; an environment that had suffered through decades of inappropriate landuse, misguided policies and recurrent drought. Some parts of Namibia resembled a devastated landscape with diminished animal and plant life and little sustainable employment. The intense desire to preserve this land for all its fauna, flora and cultures inspired us to establish the Gondwana Canyon Park almost 20 years ago. From this a longerterm vision was born. A vision of a sustainable company that would not only protect the environment but one that also embraced a commitment to real social enrichment. Without a sound financial model however, this vision would be difficult to maintain and impossible to expand. We therefore turned our hand to tourism and embraced the spirit of hospitality with the same passion and commitment that we approach conservation. of its own success. The dreamers and entrepreneurs have been replaced by corporate giants who are too far removed from the soil their lodges are built on and the cultures they have displaced. For the traveller, the world has become smaller and more accessible; with a plethora of predictable experiences and activities on offer. Even the mystique of the African continent has been reduced to big-game sightings and a ‘must-do’ checklist. Hospitality has lost its intimacy and travel seldom offers exploration and discovery, but mostly an escape from wherever you may have come. This is not what we had in mind when we created Gondwana and it is not, we believe, what our guests wish to experience. Certainly it is not the Namibia that we believe you want to share. As a result we have grown to become one of Namibia’s most desirable tourist destinations, creating hundreds of jobs and protecting vast areas of our country. This is our purpose; to continue to tell the story of Namibia so that future generations may hear it. This is where our vision began to take shape. A vision for a sustainable company that would not only protect the environment, but also be committed to Namibia’s social enrichment. Motivated by the realisation that without a sound financial model this vision would remain nothing more than a dream we looked to tourism – and applied the same passion and commitment to hospitality – understanding that this would be the means to realise our vision. We are encouraged that our strategy has proved sound. In less than twenty years we have grown to encompass many of Namibia’s most desirable tourist destinations, creating hundreds of jobs and aiding the protection of vast areas of our country. Gondwana’s business story is truly one of a strong sense of purpose put into action. Moved by the desire that Namibia should in some way be better – for us having passed this way. A vision for a sustainable company that would not only protect the environment, but also be committed to Namibia’s social enrichment. GONDWANA COLLECTION 11 BRAND INTRODUCTION OUR LOGO The tapestry of our story begins with our logo – the symbol of our purpose. The imprint of the hand is constructed from Namibia’s familiar stones and rocks. Each pebble representing millions of years of history. Each mosaic they create – telling a unique story. The link between every rock and the story it depicts is always the pulsing spirit of Africa – as encapsulated in our name Gondwana. Once the supercontinent of Africa, South America, Australia, the Antarctic and India, Gondwana not only signifies a point where people and places share beginnings and purpose, but also suggests the opportunity for new experiences with the same values at heart. For this reason the African supercontinent is subtly woven into in each of our logos. The hand is instinctively how we reach out to people we meet for the first time. We work with our hands, we show care and express ourselves when we communicate. The fingers represent our key principles; the common thread between our properties. The lines on the palm of the hand also tell a unique story; no two hands are the same – each shows a unique life journey. In this same way each of our lodges also represents the opportunity for a unique experience, and each logo encapsulates the promise of a memorable Namibian story.
