The Original STOrES
The greatest proof of the success of Pine Centre Mall as a regional
shopping centre during the last 40 years is the number of original
merchants still welcoming customers, 40 years after the mall opened its
doors.
Shoppers Drug Mart was there in the beginning in 1974 and is operating
out of an even bigger, modern outlet in 2014.
Although it was better known by its full name as the Canadian Imperial
Bank of Commerce back in 1974, the bank, now known as CIBC, has
continued to offer financial services uninterrupted in Pine Centre since
opening day.
So has Coles Books, which in 1974 was carrying Carrie, the newlyreleased first novel by an unheralded young American writer named
Stephen King. Coles remains a fixture at Pine Centre and Stephen King
has become a fixture on the store’s shelves.
Peoples Jewellers shines as brightly today as it did 40 years ago when
it was also a popular tenant in the brand-new shopping mall. Like the
others, Peoples has been with Pine Centre for the entire four decades, as
everlasting as gold and diamonds.
The other three stores on hand on opening day that remain on Pine
Centre Mall’s tenant board are the women’s clothing store Ricki’s, the
hair salon Charlie’s Girl, and London Optical.
While it’s true that if you looked for London Optical today you wouldn’t
find it, a phone call placed to the store’s original phone number would
be answered in a store filled with stylish glasses located inside Pine
Centre. Since the store changed its name to Iris when the two major
eye-care chains merged in 2000, the optical outlet has continued to
offer quality service to mall customers.
“The owner of Iris, a very hands-on gentleman named Dr. Francis
Jean who believed very strongly in customer service, applied that
thinking to the
London side
of the merged
company and

Tim Neufeld.
“We

It was Dr.
Jean who led the national lobby to streamline the regulations of
the eye-care industry, and allow all the facets of eye examinations,
lens crafting and glasses retailing to be done in one location. That
was the business model that allowed stores like Iris to thrive. The
first on-site optometrist at Pine Centre Mall was Prince George’s
own Dr. Ross Nickolet, who is still involved in the company locally
as the proprietor of the Iris store in Quesnel. Dr. Karen Jansen Van
Rensburg is now the resident optometrist at Iris-Prince George.
Ricki’s is another store that has more of a story at Pine Centre
than meets the eye. Yes, it was an original Pine Centre Mall tenant,
and yes, they are there today in a prime location on a corner near
Sears, but they bowed out of the mall family for many years. About
five years ago, Ricki’s returned to Pine Centre and some of its
original mall customers came, too.
“We have lots of regular customers, some of them still have the
old paper Ricki’s client cards, and they seem very happy we are at
the mall again,” said assistant Ricki’s manager Kerri Dodd. “I think
it’s awesome. I love it. I started off five years ago as a part-time
associate, now I’m assistant manager and I’m enjoying retail. I’m
still learning, but I already see changes happening. Our product
is excellent and the mall atmosphere is positive - personalized
customer service is how we can compete with online shopping.
We can make sure our customers are happy, face to face.”
“It’s a great little team. We are like a family,” agreed store

colleague Halley Mason.

“
“
but Charlie’s Girl, the salon she co-owns with
Laurie Bator, has also been at Pine Centre
since opening day. Even more impressive,
Charlie’s Girl is one of the few remaining
independent companies operating at
the mall.
“I have worked at Charlie’s Girl
for 19 years and we bought it four
years ago from the last remaining
original partner, Diane Doman,” said
Martindale.“So we feel very akin to the
longevity of the mall. It’s our story, too.”
Like Pine Centre itself, Charlie’s Girl
has grown and diversified during
the last four decades. It still employs
eleven hairdressers but they added
four aestheticians, three receptionists,
one nail technician, and in peak times
of year, they augment their staff with
part-time help as well. They have
also invested in some of the latest
products and trade tools so they can
offer a salon experience in their oneof-a-kind all-local boutique spa.
“Some of our customers have
been coming to us all 40 of those
years,” Martindale said. “The
customer that just walked out: I’ve
been cutting her hair since she was
three. She is 22 now. You see those
clients through and even start
cutting their kids’ hair. We get a lot
of drop-ins, and we also get a lot of
regulars who can do a lot of other
things around the mall when they
come for their services here. And we
get a lot of people who are visiting from
other places in the north and naturally
come to the mall for their shopping.”
“There are many good reasons for being
in the mall,” agreed Neufeld. “There is a large
flow of people, you have a convenient openhours structure so you can help people on their
schedules, and it is a central place to do a lot
of other things as well. That goes for staff and
clients.”

SERVING
MALL
MERCHANTS
The three longest-serving employees in the Pine
Centre Mall family are as different as earth, wind and
fire but what they do share in common is a decades-old
commitment under northern B.C.’s biggest retail roof.
The most familiar human fixture to Pine Centre is Jack
Butcher. He and his partner Maxine operate the lotto
kiosk now, but since he first arrived in 1977, Jack has held
a number of

the past 35 years. Today, shoppers can find her at Stokes,
the kitchen outfitters, but she started out at the Ricki’s
clothing store, then was at the Hallmark shop, as well
as some of the related stores in the Northern Group,
and finally at Stokes, where she’d like to be at until she
decides to retire.
Walter Colk got his first Pine Centre Mall job in 1983 at
Peoples Jewellers. In 1991 he moved within the mall to
O.B. Allan Jewellers, which was taken over eventually by
Ann Louise Jewellers and there he remains as manager
until Christmas Eve of this year when the Christmas gift
he gives himself is retirement.
Colk said he has watched from a privileged position
as retail habits and trends played out like seasons before
his eyes.
“Over the years I’ve seen two main expansions to
the mall and a bunch of other alterations which have
increased the retail outlets tremendously,” Colk said.
“I’ve also seen a difference in the town itself and modern
shopping habits as time went on. The mall is still a
gathering spot.”
Butcher was a Prince George boy but working in the
Lower Mainland for Cal Investments, the company that
owned Pine Centre Mall back then. They transferred him
to his hometown to run the food services aspects of
the mall, which was primarily the Pickle Pete’s Cafeteria,
which later evolved into the multi-vendor food court of
today, and the light refreshment stand near the front
entrance that has never ceased operations.

worked at a number of businesses in the Mall over the years.

Inside the mall, Butcher has seen many
changes in activities and technologies. Gone
are the stores dealing in one-hour photo
development but in are the stores dealing in
cell phones. Gone are the days of many people
smoking inside the mall and inside the stores,
here are the days of being open seven days a
week.
“The one thing you can still do, no matter
what changes in life, is customer service,” said
Hochachka. “We expect to excel at customer
service here.”

PINE CENTRE
FAMILY
ABOVE: Kimberly Mitchell, a Manager at one of Pine Centre’s newest businesses, the
WOW! Mobile Boutique, poses behind their stylish new signage.
BELOW: Pine Centre’s newest ‘Anchor’
store, Target, during its construction last year.
It’s hard to find a vacant space for very long at
Pine Centre Mall these days. Retailers are lined up
to join the family of businesses in the mall.
Target conducted a massive renovation of its
anchor space before opening its doors last year
to area shoppers at Pine Centre. Other recent
additions to the mall roster include Reitman’s,
DavidsTea, the return of Ricki’s, Mobilinq,
Boathouse, Stitches, Tommy Gun’s and WOW!
mobile. Below The Belt will be open for business
at its new Pine Centre location before Christmas.
“We have been busy since the moment we
opened, and we are busy every day until we
close,” said Megan Goertzen, manager of Tommy
Gun’s Original Barbershop. “I think the mall is a
perfect place to have a business. Everyone comes
to the mall. We did a lot of advertising right away,
so people knew they didn’t need to make an
appointment with us, they could just drop in. Plus
people see our vintage fridge or other features
that catch their eye, and they just walk in to check
us out.”
Goertzen said they serve a lot of customers
from out of town, because the mall is a preferred
place for the visiting shopper to go. While they are
waiting for the teenagers to try on clothes, or wait
for a spouse to do some banking, they will pop in
for a haircut.
All ages utilize Tommy Gun’s but it is dominated
by men, the demographic that covets traditional
barbers, and Tommy Gun’s added feature is the all-
female staff doing the traditional trims and facial
shaves.
Tommy Gun’s can claim a lineage at Pine Centre
Mall. Although the franchise is based in Alberta,
this is the first location for B.C. and the local owner
is also connected to Chatter’s Hair Salon, also a
longtime mall merchant.
WOW! mobile also has its sister stores long
established at Pine Centre. They are a partnership
between otherwise competitive stores Rogers
and Telus, but since both get heavy traffic for
the various products in their primary shops, they
combined to set up the WOW! kiosk, dealing
exclusively in cell phones.
There are 100 WOW! boutiques in Canada;
six have opened in B.C. in the past two months.
During their opening week at Pine Centre, nobody
in the corporate region sold more cell phones than
Prince George’s Emmajade Stratton.
“I was born here, moved away when I was young,
then moved back when I was 11 in 2000,” Stratton
said. “I’ve seen other places, and I’ve seen Prince
George grow and change. It is different as a city
just in my time here, and the mall is really different
than when I was a kid. We look more like a mall
you’d see in Vancouver than in a small town.”
Her WOW! colleague Kimberly Mitchell said
“There are more reasons to come here to shop. I
think Prince George is only going to grow and I
think Pine Centre is going to keep up.”
PieceS Of HiSTOry
•
When Pine Centre opened its doors on Nov. 6, 1974,
it did so with two anchor tenants – Woolco and
SuperValu – and a total of 43 shops and services.
•
Two years later, Phase 2 of Pine Centre was completed,
which added Sears as a third anchor and 22 new
stores, bringing the mall’s total retail offerings to 65.

Shopping at Pine Centre was lauded as a convenient,
hassle-free new way to buy with its “totally climatecontrolled malls, making the weather never a worry.”
The mall was open six days a week (closed on Sundays
and Monday afternoons).
•
Pine Centre cost roughly $1 million per acre, with the
original footprint spanning 20 acres of land. Today, the
mall itself covers 14 acres, with seven acres of property
dedicated to parking. This includes the pad tenants
(Starbucks, TD Canada Trust, RBC Royal Bank, Signature
B.C. Liquor Store) who came on board between 2006
and 2008 – the same year the Pine Centre food court
underwent a renovation.
•
Pine Centre had the support of 84 per cent of Prince
George residents polled in 1973.

Not to be outdone, Northland Hyundai is

“We were just shocked when Kyle Bachman

Perison said. “I know people from the Lower

Picture yourself with Peter Pine
Peter Pine once was lost, but now is found.
The loveable lumberjack was created
roughly two years after Pine Centre Mall
opened its doors to stand as a mascot for
the new shopping centre.
“I’m pretty sure Margo Henry invented
him,” said Jack Butcher, the mall’s longestserving employee. “She was the promotions
manager of the mall, and she thought it was
important that the mall have some kind of
mascot. That was the image that came up.”
Dressed in his leather work boots, his Pine
Centre Mall mackinaw tartan and able to
heft a raw log with a grin, Peter Pine was the
picture of Prince George’s resource-based
regional economy.
But his cardboard likeness was put into
storage so well, we got lost until the
cleanups and renovations for the mall’s 40th
anniversary.
Now that he’s been revived, Peter Pine
has been given a place of honour in Pine
Centre’s Nostalgia Lounge, sponsored by
Northland Hyundai.
Let past and present collide: snap a selfie
with Peter Pine and post it to Pine Centre’s
Facebook page. There is $600 worth in Pine
Centre gift cards up for grabs just for sharing
your photo.

For the youngest family members, there is a colourful,
climbable, crawlable family play area, installed in May 2012
to make a visit to the mall extra fun for the wee ones and to
give a well-deserved break for their parents! At the Pine Centre
play area, located just inside of the mall’s main entrance, kids
can play with other kids while parents can take a breath,
have a coffee or a snack and visit with other parents. The play
area is just another way that Pine Centre creates a sense of
community for all visitors, regardless of the goods and services
they are shopping for. It sees an average of 1,700 kids a month.
“I put a lot of time into designing this,” said mall manager
Sonya Hunt, a parent and grandparent herself. “I didn’t want
us to be a rural mall; I wanted our urban tastes to be reflected.
I wanted families to be excited about this area, I wanted
interactivity, I wanted a place where parents could sit and take
a rest and let their kids blow off some energy, and have fun.”
Also for the kids, Pine Centre recently upgraded its coin
rides and invites children to the mall for all of the important
season festivities, such as trick-or-treating to mall stores on
Halloween and getting their picture taken with Santa at
Christmas and the Easter Bunny in the spring. This year, there
will be Halloween photo opportunities as well, which will be

“[Women] have a lot to contribute, a lot to bring

pressures of the administrative grind with being a
