Going ‘GREEN’ Makes Good Cents! GOING TO EARTH DAY ON APRIL 18TH MAKES GREAT SENSE!!! This year’s HCIA Annual Earth Day Fair on April 18th in Liberty State Park is going to better than ever! Where else can you win prizes, get free giveaways, jump on inflatable rides, listen to live music and get your Kids Krusaders Passport stamped for a special gift – all for FREE??? I bet you didn’t know that going green and caring about our earth can save you money??? It’s true and it’s so much fun!!! The party starts at 10AM in the North Field in Liberty State Park and inside the Historic CRRNJ Terminal, where you can enter our Kids’ Fun Run. Running keeps you healthy and there is nothing like breathing in the fresh air; plus everyone will win prizes! Even your parents can join in the fun by running in our 5K Run and 5K Walk for Liberty, sponsored by the Friends of Liberty State Park. Be sure to visit our “Kids’ Kingdom” inflatable play area, with its huge slide! There will be face painting, arts and crafts, music on stage throughout the day, strolling entertainers and contests for every kid! Free tree seedlings will also be given out, courtesy of the NJDEP’s Division of Parks and Forestry. While you are having fun at the HCIA’s Annual Earth Day Fair on April 18th, you might even learn a thing or two about ways to save money while protecting our planet. You each showed the many ways that we all can make a difference for our planet and save money at the same time! Look for the winning posters on display at Earth Day – and I hope to see you there! The weather will be warm before we know it and I know that lots of kids will want to grab their bikes and go! No one wants to miss out on the fun, but remember that safety comes first. Come to the TMA’s Stride & Ride event on June 3rd in Braddock Park and learn about all the ways you can improve bike safety while having a blast!you deserve all the praise you’ve earned. Norman M. Kids for Clean Communities - Clean Teens’09 Awards You can nominate someone at your school or youth group, or even an exceptional individual that you know, for the Kids for Clean Communities & Clean Teens 2009 Awards. Nominees who have started an educational program or project that helps to make New Jersey cleaner and greener are eligible. Topics can include recycling, beautification and litter reduction – to name a few. Awards for outstanding achievement will be handed out on May 19th at the Kids for Clean Communities Clean Teens Seminar & Awards Program, at Robert Treat Hotel, Newark. Hurry up and submit your nomination though – the deadline is April 30, 2009!!! A mix of organic materials, like leaves and some types of food, used to improve soil. Using natural resources wisely and using less than usual in order avoid waste. Pre-Recycle Resources that are always being replenished through natural processes. If you bring your own bags to the store with you, you not only pre vent having to recycle additional bags, you recycle an existing bag. It is possible to drink water that was present during the time of the dinosaurs! Every Sunday, the United States wastes nearly 90% of the recyclable newspapers. This wastes about 500,000 trees! Each of us generates on average 4.4 pounds of waste per day per person! One tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants from the air each year! Yeah! National Champions 4 Years in a Row! You are amazing recyclers! Hudson County Kids recycled more crayons during the Hudson County Improvement Authority’s (HCIA) 7th Annual Crayon Recycling Contest than any other county in the entire country - approximately 2,356 pounds of crayons! This year 44 schools participated in this worthwhile recycling contest – the most ever! Spring means warmer weather, outdoor fun and golf - and the LINCOLN PARK DRIVING RANGE is open after school and on weekends. Come down with your family and take advantage of the upgraded Driving Range and you can practice your swing right alongside Mom or Dad! Located at the intersection of Duncan Avenue and Route 1-9 in Jersey City (also known as Route 440), the Driving Range is open seven days a week from 8 am to 8 pm. Golf lessons are available. AT HUDSON TMA STRIDE & RIDE Stride Ride! Smart kids know that when it comes to getting around, walking or biking is much better for our environment than driving. Riding your bicycle to the park or walking to school won’t cause any pollution at all. Taking those same trips in a car can send harmful pollutants into our atmosphere. So where do all the cool kids go to show off some of their skills and learn more about the benefits of walking and biking? The “2009 Hudson TMA Stride and Ride,” a free family event hosted by the Hudson Transportation Management Association on Saturday, June 3rd from 10am to 3pm in Braddock Park, North Bergen. There will be walking races, free entertainment, raffles and giveaways. Kids ages 3 to 5 can participate in a “Bike Rodeo,” a junior obstacle course teaching safe cycling skills. Parents and family members can also enjoy hands on training with their children ages 4 and up in our “Teach Your Child to Ride” activity. So bring your own bicycle and let your parents know that tricycle and strollers are welcome too. We’ll see you there!
