PSALM 100:5 Providence Leadership BOARD OF DIRECTORS a CENTURY of CARE In 2014, we were able to celebrate a big milestone — a century of care. It was 100 years ago, in 1914, that a Roseland parsonage was transformed into the first Holland Home, a retirement community serving 14 residents. Through the last century, Providence Life Services has undergone name changes, location additions, and service enhancements. In the process, we’ve served thousands of residents and their families. IN OUR 100TH YEAR, WE TOOK A FEW MORE BIG STEPS FORWARD: PROVIDENCE LIFE SERVICES’ MISSION STATEMENT We completed construction on Victorian Village Health & Wellness Center — the three buildings are ready for residents, and we celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in October. We are so excited to provide what we believe is the future of care: serving seniors in a home setting, not an institutional building. “Answering the call to enhance the lives of those We broke ground in St. John, Indiana — Park Place of St. John will be our first community in Indiana, and it’s one that we’ve been praying for and working toward for many years. The community will feature independent living as well as the Small House style of skilled nursing care and rehabilitation that we will be providing on the Victorian Village campus. we serve in the name of We broke ground on Arbor Place of Lisle — like Thomas Place of Orland Park, Arbor Place will provide quality, affordable senior living. Jesus Christ” [For more information on these projects, see pages 6-7] With the prayerful and financial support of a faithful community, we have been blessed in our mission to answer God’s call and enhance the lives of our residents. We pray for God’s continued blessings as we head into our second century of care. Richard C. That combined experience, history, and commitment is what we celebrated in 2014, 100 years after a remodeled parsonage gave shelter to 14 seniors in 1914. A CENTURY OF CARE | We celebrated the milestone with a gathering at the Driehaus Museum this spring, where the Providence family convened for dinner and special ministry presentations. Incoming Board President Norm Aardema recognized six retiring board members — Arnie Koldenhoven, Kurt Nelson, and Ron Porter from the Board of Directors; and John De Young, Ken Hoving, and Steve Vryhof from the Board of Governors. These faithful servants each received a gift commemorating their terms. In addition, three new board members were welcomed — Jean Cavanaugh, Rich Van Hattem, and Dr. Al Diepstra. These three new leaders will help Providence enter its second century of service. Our retirement living services started 100 years ago, with a small number of elders in one Chicago neighborhood. Today, more than 700 people at any one time enjoy retirement living in 5 Providence locations. And while retirement living is still the largest component of our capacity, we also serve thousands of people with assisted living, skilled nursing, rehab, specialized memory care, home health care, private duty services, and hospice care. On any given day, we are serving 1,887 people, and in a typical year we have touched more than 5,000 lives. That kind of reach would have been unimaginable to the church members who first met in 1914 to figure out how they could make a difference. The buildings have changed through the years as well. A century ago, our original 14 seniors lived comfortably in a rambling Roseland parsonage. That setting was not sufficient for long, and a new building was constructed with room for 100 residents. More rooms were added in 1940. In 1958, an additional wing was completed, so the new building could now serve 140 residents in 131 rooms. Continued growth resulted in additional buildings — sometimes newly constructed, sometimes purchased and remodeled. Approximately 140 Providence constituents had plenty of time to relax and reconnect while exploring the museum. Guests then transitioned to the Murphy Auditorium for dinner and a special ministry presentation, as well as a special surprise — outgoing Board Chair Arnie Koldenhoven's heartfelt and humorous tribute to CEO Rich Schutt. A once-in-a-lifetime celebration like this gives members of the Providence family the opportunity to connect outside of meeting rooms and busy schedules. The evening was marked by friendly conversation among small groups of varied people representing the broad spectrum of the Providence family. Additional services, new locations, different buildings — these are some of the things that have changed throughout a century of serving seniors. What hasn’t changed is the Providence commitment to quality Christian care. And we look forward to our second century of service in the confidence that God will be as faithful in the future as He has been in the past. 4 | Providence Life Services Annual Report – 2014 | 5 Celebrating a Century of Care 1914-2014 | When the ministry known as Rest Haven merged with the ministry known as Holland Home in 1969, the result was a larger vision of serving senior saints than either had anticipated alone.
