Perseverance Chassis Kits SUGGESTED WHEELS.
1
Perseverance Chassis Kits
This is a range of locomotive and tender chassis, designed by Rod Neep, which will enable the Modeller to
build a chassis of scale appearance. All PERSEVERANCE chassis have the facility of being built as a rigid
chassis (BASIC) or as a fully compensated chassis based on Mike Sharman’s ``Flexichas’’ principle. The
chassis design is now of the ``slot and tab’’ type construction, which allows even the novice Modeller to build
a chassis with accurately, aligned frames. All kits are designed to be suitable for 00. EM. & 18, 83 gauge, and
contain in the packed kits frame spacers for 00 gauge, The 00 spacers can be exchanged for EM & 18.83
Spacers or supplied in the kit as required by Mail order The kits are quite easy to build, without un-necessary
complications and with a minimum of tools. All chassis components are ETCHED onto .018 Brass with the
valve gears and coupling rods and connecting rods etched onto Nickel Silver.
A PERSEVERANCE “FLEXICHAS “chassis will not only greatly improve the looks of your model, but if
built as a Flexichas unit will greatly improve the standard of running, by giving the model greater
controllability, smoother running and greatly improved traction for improved hauling power. All this is gained
by having a chassis design that enables the wheels to be on the track all of the time, no matter how UN-even
your trackwork is. Even track laid ``dead level’’ will have an un-evenness of a few thousandths of an inch. So
with a rigid chassis some of the wheels are not touching the track and doing their job to pick up current and
haul the train. With a `Flexichas’ the wheels are ALWAYS on the track, no matter how slight the track
variation is over joints, slopes, pointwork etc. A Flexichas can handle some quite spectacular trackwork also;
anyone who has seen Mike Sharman’s twisting, turning and test track can verify this!
Most of the chassis kits are designed to fit under the bodies of proprietary models by Hornby,
Mainline, and Bachman Lima Dapol etc. Some are designed specifically for other manufacturer’s kit
models. However, there is no reason why any chassis kit cannot be fitted into either a ready-to-run
model or a kit built model. Usually the only modification, which might be needed, is to perhaps shorten
the mainframes at either end to accommodate the thickness of the buffer beam on the body. (This is best
done before chassis assembly.) Compensated Kits include the following parts: - Etched brass mainframes,
frame spacers for 00, spring detail, brake gear, wheel balance weights, jointed coupling rods, special
`Machined Brass Square Horn blocks’ and etched brass horn guides, plain top hat bearings and the
compensating beam and pivot.
Where applicable, the kits also include a compensated bogie unit, cylinders and valve gear etc.
Tender chassis kits are not included with chassis kits but are available separately. Items that are required to
complete the chassis to personal choice are wheels, motor and gears. For your guidance the recommended
motors and wheels are given under each description of the kit.
CUSTOMERS THAT REQUIRE EM or P4 Frame spacers as an alternative to the 00 Gauge provided are
requested to request this when ordering, or for kits already supplied return the 00 spacers and the P4 or EM
spacers will be supplied by return F.O.C from Chris Parrish when requested.
SUGGESTED WHEELS.
Recommended wheel sizes are given under each chassis heading, but please note that in a few
cases, e.g. GWR Castle, the prototype wheel size cannot be fitted due to the clearances of the
flanges of adjacent wheels.
Wheel descriptions are given as follows:- (example)
Bogie wheels 3’2’’ 10 spoke (where applicable)
Driving 6’8’’ 20 spoke
Wheel stroke (26’’)-(i.e. stroke at crankpin)
Crankpin in line with spokes (IL) Crankpin between spokes (PB) These notations are those used by Mike
Sharman in his book :- ‘`Wheel Specifications for the Modeller’’
2
ROMFORD and Markits wheel sizes are shown separately after the prototype information for those
modellers who wish to use them. With the growing range of wheels from Markits and Alan Gibson it is often
possible to obtain exactly the correct wheel for the model in terms of size, number of spokes, crank throw and
position of the crankpin, which is why we quote this information under each chassis heading.
Please bear in mind when choosing the wheels for your model that the real locomotive very often had wheels
as much as 2’’ diameter under size due to re-profiling after wear. This gives the Modeller a little licence in
choosing the wheel sizes.
MARKITS - ROMFORD: - THE MOST POPULAR KIT DRIVING WHEELS
These wheels have a cast metal centre, and are fitted with Nickel silver tyres, and available in insulated or tyre
(Non-insulated) versions. Markits now supply all Romford wheels in a NEW BLACK FINISH The Driving
wheels have a square axle hole to assist in quartering, a special screwdriver is available to secure the driving
wheels axles. A special. Romford crank pin is required.
ALAN GIBSON Wheels:Moulded plastics centre and fitted with bright steel tyres. Each wheel is closely scaled to a given prototype,
although some modellers will find them equally representative to cover other types. Alan Gibson special
Crank pins are required. All the above wheels use a standard 1/8’’ axle. Balance weights are not moulded the
wheels.
FITTING WHEELS
MARKITS -ROMFORD.
It is usual practice to fit insulated wheels to one side of the chassis and non-insulated to the other side. The
insulated wheels can be easily identified from the back of the wheel by looking for the fibre insulation
between the wheel tyre and the rim. Push the wheel onto the axle so that the square section on the end of the
axle engages fully in the wheel centre. The axle nut is then screwed into place from the outside. The crank
pins screw into the outside of the wheel, these and the wheel nuts can both be tightened using the special
Romford screwdriver. Wheels need to be ``quartered’’ in relation to each other, meaning in MOST cases,
when looking down from the top of the model, and looking forwards, the crankpins on the left hand wheels
point towards the top, and those on the right hand side point forwards. I.E. a quarter of a revolution apart. We
recommend a neat etched cover our ref. V013 to glue over the axle nut.
ALAN GIBSON Driving Wheels
These are all insulated wheels. Fit by pushing squarely onto the axle by pressing on the HUB part of the
wheel, and gently rotating the wheel onto the axle. Instructions that are required for fitting the crankpins are
given in each pack of crankpins supplied for each make of wheel. These wheels all need to be quartered by
trial and error. The end result is as described for Romford wheels. The method of quartering is as follows: Set the wheels on the driven axle (the one with the gear) to as near 90 degrees as possible by eye. (It doesn’t
matter if they are a degree or so out!) Now NEVER alter this pair again. Set the next pair of wheels along in
the same way, and then put the coupling rods on, in effect coupling up only the two sets to form a 0-4-0. Test
run on the track by pushing the chassis along. A tight spot will mean that the wheels are out of quarter. All you
need to do is adjust ONLY ONE WHEEL of the last pair fitted. Never touch the other three wheels and always
adjust the SAME wheel, until the chassis runs smoothly. NEVER touch any of these four wheels again.
Set the next pair of wheels approximately quartered, and fit only the section of coupling rods joining this pair
to the adjacent pair. Adjust ONE WHEEL ONLY of the LAST pair fitted until the chassis runs smoothly.
Much is talked about the problem of quartering wheels. Follow the above set of instructions and you will get
results easily. A tight spot may be caused by the holes in the coupling rods being too small. A sloppy fit of the
3
rods always works best. If in doubt, open up the holes in the coupling rods, but NEVER MAKE THE HOLES
OVAL, keep them round.
For further information on Chassis construction ideas we recommend a Book written by Ian Rice, and
published by Wild Swan Locomotive Chassis Construction.
SUGGESTED PARTS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE CHASSIS.
A suggested motor type is given under each chassis heading. However the chassis kits are designed to enable
to accept any type of motor subject to space within the body. All chassis kits are supplied without motor,
wheels and gears to allow for personal choice.
Wheel arrangements: Quoted as for example 0-6-0, 0-4-2, 4-6-2.etc.
The first number is the number of the leading wheels
The second is the number of driving wheels.
The third is the number of trailing wheels.
AN 0-6-0 CHASSIS USING ROMFORD WHEELS WILL REQUIRE: 3 Insulated driving wheels.
3 non-Insulated driving wheels.
3 Driving wheel axles (only in 00 & EM. gauge.)
6 Crankpins and fixers
A 4-6-2 CHASSIS USING ALAN GIBSON WHEELS: 4 Bogie wheels and two axles
3 pair driving wheels
3 axles (gauge of your choice )
2 Trailing wheels and 2 axles.
6 crankpins and fixers.
MOTORS and MOTOR MOUNTS
A chassis being fitted with a Mashima or Tenshodo motor will require.
A motor with 2mm motor shaft ie. MH1620,MH1624 requires PERSEVERANCE VMM4 or VMM1 .
A motor with a 1.5mm shaft like the 1224 and Tenshodo mini motors require VMM5 mount

RIGID CHASSIS PACKS “00” FRAME ETCHINGS & VALVE GEAR SETS & COUPLING RODS
Chris Parrish is now able offer the established range of Perseverance chassis kits in three different packs to
allow modeller to choose the number of components they require. Puffers have in the past only offered
chassis as described above that included the compensation units, we have found that many customers do not
require the horn guide etchings , square bearings and compensation beam and some customers only require the
basic frame etchings not our normal selection of instructions ,small castings , nuts bolts wire etc.
RIGID and Compensated KITS PRODUCED FROM OCTOBER 2013 onwards will now only
include “00” frame spacers. EM and P4 Spacers can be supplied if requested at no further charge
Each chassis type described below is now listed and priced as follows :
LCxxx for the Complete Kit in the original style with compensation parts.
LCxxxR for the complete chassis pack without compensation unit
LCxxxE for the basic frame etchings and frame spacers

The standard compensated tender chassis has a layout identical to the 0-6-0 locomotive chassis. Shown in the
photograph is a chassis built to 18.83 gauge. The rear of the chassis is to the left hand side which has an axle
running in a fixed top hat bearing. The other two axles run in bearings with grooves around the outside so that
the bearings can ride up and down in the slot in the horn blocks. Frames.
18
If the chassis is to be built `rigid’ (i.e. NO compensation) top hat bearings are used, soldered straight into the
frames, Midway between the centre and front axle (right hand in photograph) is a pivot, which is a length of
1/16’’ rod soldered to the frames with a piece of matching diameter bore tube over it so that the tube can rotate
on the rod. To the underside of the tube is soldered another length of rod, running down the centre line of the
chassis and resting on the centre of the two adjacent axles.
In addition to the complete chassis kits we also manufacture a series of components which can be used to
convert almost all other manufacturer’s chassis kits to the `Flexichas system. The components may also be
used as an aid to the scratch builder. The modifications needed to a kit chassis mainframes are cut-outs
approx. 6mm wide and extending to 4mm above the normal axle line. These are made around each axle hole,
cutting need not be too accurate. A 1/16’’ hole needs to be drilled in each frame to take the pivot. In the case
of a 0-6-0 this is usually midway between the centre and front axle position and about 4mm above the axle
centre line. On a bogie locomotive the pivot point lies between the bogie and the leading driving wheel axle.
Positioning is not critical, but it is worth noting that if the pivot point is closer to the driving wheel that the
bogie, then more locomotive weight will be taken by the driving wheels for better traction.
SPARE COMPONENTS FOR CHASSIS CONSTRUCTION
FLEXICHAS HORNBLOCKS CG001 /2
These horn blocks are suitable for all locomotives and tender chassis, all you need is a cut out in the frames
which is 6mm wide and extending to 4mm above the normal axle centre line. It doesn’t matter too much about
accuracy if you are cutting into the frames of a kit or scratch built chassis. Get reasonably close to the above
dimensions and all will be O.K. using the horn block alignment jigs, to set the centres with the coupling rods.

CG003 aly Axle Horn block Alignment Jigs
Price £3.95
The universal jigs are used for alignment of any type of hornblock using the coupling rods as part of the jig.
The springs are fitted onto the axles of the jig followed by the bearings/hornblocks, and spring the assembly
into position in the locomotive main frames - they are then held firmly in position. The coupling rods are now
fitted to the outer ends of the axle jigs, which will automatically set the wheelbase of the hornblocks to exactly
that of the coupling rods. The hornblocks are then soldered to the frames in the position they are held. This
method takes all of the guesswork out of hornblock fitting, no measuring required but it always works out
accurate. In addition, both hands are free to fix the hornblocks.
19
The jigs are supplied as a set of three, made of turned aluminium together with springs and instructions. The
jigs can be used over and over again, one set should last a lifetime. They are suitable for OO, EM and 18.83
gauges and can be used with the crank pins supplied by Ultrascale, Kean-Maygib, Alan Gibson, and Romford
The photograph shows the alignment jigs in use (in this case on a MR 0-4-4T chassis using profile milled
mainframes). The right hand hornblocks have been soldered in place, but were held against the frames by the
spring, leaving both hands free. Note that the coupling rods are in position on the ends of the jigs to ensure that
the hornblocks are spaced exactly to the correct wheelbase - the same as the coupling rods. The photograph
also shows a V006 frame spacer in use. The one at the left hand end of the chassis has a hole which aligns
with the body mounting point. The other spacer is `upside-down ‘ready for attachment of a pickup plate - the
next operation will be to fit the pivot and compensated bogie.
V005 Box frame spacers for OO and 18.83 gauge. Price £1.50
A set of six etched brass spacers which fold up into an open box shape, which gives a flat surface to fix to the
mainframes, and a horizontal and vertical surface for rigidity. The spacers allow adjustment of the frames to
ensure that they are `square’ to each other before final fixing. Each spacer has holes
For body fixings, pickup plates, bogie mountings etc. Infinitely variable in use in any position in the chassis,
upside down, inside out, vertical, horizontal, or even at any angle.
The spacer is for OO one way round, and 18.83 gauge the other way round.
18.83 gauge spacing is for 14.6mm or 15mm nominal.
OO gauge spacing is for 10.4mm or 10.7mm nominal.
V006 Box frame spacers for EM and OO. Price £1.50
Specification as above (V005) except EM Gauge spacing is 13.5mm or 14.1mm nominal. OO Gauge spacing
is 10.4mm or 11.00mm nominal
SPARE COMPONENTS FOR CHASSIS CONSTRUCTION
V008 Universal L type frame spacers. 11mm nominal spacing at Price £1.50 per pack
A set of eight etched brass frame spacers, each of which folds to a simple `L’ shape for soldering between the
frames in any position. The `L’ shape not only gives good rigidity to either an etched or milled brass chassis,
but also ensures that the frames are automatically parallel and square to each other. Each spacer has screw
holes for mounting to the body or for other fitments. These spacers are considered by many to be an
20
improvement over the original box spacer types (V005 & 6) although the original will remain available until
further notice.
SPECIAL NOTE :If these spacers are to use with thick brass frames such as those supplied in kits by DJH,
ProScale etc., we recommend that EM modellers use the OO type spacers and that 18.83 modellers use EM
type spacers, otherwise wheel to frame clearances become prototypical - about ½’’ which can cause problems
on a model!!
V009 for EM gauge - nominal 13.6mm spacing. At new lower price of £1.50 per pack

V015 Tab’ frame spacers 00-EM-P4 Price £2.75
A sheet of OO, EM and 18.83 gauge frame spacers with `tabs’ on most spacers. The spacers fold up into an
`L’ shape. These spacers are not now included in Perseverance Chassis kits, but have been replaced by the
00 only version our ref no V016.see below

Locomotive Bogie Compensation
V011 Locomotive bogie compensation unit
Delivery )
Not in stock until Easter 2015 ( orders taken for April
This locomotive bogie compensating unit has a variable wheelbase and is suitable for OO, EM and 18.83
gauges. It links in with the locomotive compensation, where the bogie takes part of the weight (as in the
prototype). This unit is suitable for all locomotives, and is the absolute answer for problems usually associated
with 4-4-0 and 0-4-4 models where lack of correct balance causes the locomotive to end heavy, tilt and suffer
from lack of traction. Modellers can now be confident in building locomotives with this wheel arrangement,
knowing that they will haul good loads with no problems. Models with a 4-6-0, 4-6-2 and 2-6-4 wheel
arrangement (i.e. all six coupled models) will also require a `link beam’ as described later. Cosmetic bogie
side frames are required (as usually supplied with the kit.
The diagram shows the construction of the locomotive bogie compensating unit. All parts shown are included,
plus varying lengths of the outrigger to suit the various gauges, bogie frame thickness and one for outside
frame bogies. Two lengths of swing arm are included, both of which are adjustable in length.
For 4-4-0 and 0-4-4 locomotives the rear end of the main beam rests on the adjacent driving wheel axle. On 46-0’s etc., the beam rests in a Link beam, as described later
Illustrated in side view is a completed bogie-compensating unit, which also has a link beam fitted to the main
beam, and is ready for assembly into a 4-6-0 locomotive. The pivot rod and tube fit to the mainframes in the
usual way, which fits the entire unit to the locomotive.
In the case of a 4-4-0 or a 0-4-4 locomotive, the main beam rests on the centre of the adjacent axle. A
locomotive having six driving wheels, a Link beam is fitted loosely to the main beam, and then the front and
centre driving axles pass through the axle holes in the Link beam. In effect, the result is one compensated unit,
(the bogie), linked and compensated to a second compensated unit, (the leading and centre driving wheels).
The rear driving wheels run in fixed bearings in the frames and are driven by the motor via the gears. The
whole bogie unit is like a totally flexible joint!!
22
An alternative use for this bogie unit is as a ``free link’’ tender bogie, where it is sited to carry the front and
centre wheels of a tender. The main beam and support bracket is not required in this case, as the swing arm is
screwed directly to a frame spacer. The bogie in a tender carries no body weight, all of the weight of the tender
is carried by the fixed rear wheels, and, more importantly, by the drawbar attaching the tender to the
locomotive. Add weight to the front of the tender and all of this weight is transferred to the locomotive driving
wheels for better traction. This system is best used on locomotives with any of the following wheel
arrangements: 4-4-0, 4-2-2, 4-4-2, 2-2-2, and 2-4-0. The difference in running using this method is very
considerable, and can also be used even if the locomotive is not compensated.
