Following the sailor’s demands for better tractability of the anchor the still frequently used cast stockless bow-anchor was developed. During the last decades the so-called High Holding Power (HHP) and Super High Holding Power (SHHP) anchors have been developed because of the need for more reliability and less weight. The leading types of these anchors are the POOL® anchors. Over 30 years of experience and knowledge of the POOL® anchor makes SEC a reliable partner for today and the future. In order to obtain type approval for High Holding Power, the anchor has to prove during full-scale sea trials that it has a holding ability of at least two times the holding ability of a conventional anchor of the same weight. The predicate HHP allows a weight reduction of 25 % compared to a conventional anchor for the same equipment number. An important comparative feature is the over-balanced anchor head of almost all POOL® anchor-types. The centre of gravity of these anchors lies below the axle. As a result the flukes are always vertical while heaving the anchor. Contrary to most other ship’s anchors, which are casted or forged, the POOL® anchors are made from welded high tensile steel plate material. SEATRIALS POOL-TW & CONVENTIONAL ANCHORS Normally, the anchor is connected by means of a chain or a steel wire (and a chain forerunner) to the vessel. Of course SEC can supply the complete chain specification with the anchor. A minimum requirement, however is to consult SEC. Therefore, please pay attention to the way the anchor and the chain are connected to each other on one side, and to the way the chain is connected to the vessel on the other side. The diagram on the left is the result of one of the full-scale sea trials. In this diagram you can see that the holding power of a POOL® anchor can be as high as 10 times the weight of the anchor under good conditions. Ship`s Equipment Centre Bremen (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. ® ® HHP-POOL TW Anchors POOL SUPERBOX SWIVELS HHP-POOL® TW ANCHORS POOL® SUPERBOX SWIVELS Although all POOL® anchors have a high holding ability, the POOL® TW anchor shows best the combination of holding power and fluke surface. The anchor has large flat flukes made out of high tensile steel plate material. The thickness varies from 15 mm up to 140 mm (depending on the anchor size). The POOL® superbox swivel is the shortest possible connection between anchor and chain approved by various classification societies. In the design of a vessel a compromise has to be made between optimized mooring arrangement and the deck area available for anchoring and mooring equipment. The extreme points and the inner edges of the flukes are sharpened in order to enable them to dig in easily. To prevent the anchor from digging in too deep, the POOL® TW anchor is equipped with crownplates. Connection of anchor and chain with POOL® superbox swivel (1) and conventional connection (2) 2 1 Application of the POOL® superbox swivel means a shorter distance between anchor shank and chain stopper. The winches can be placed more to the front of the vessel, which reduces the required deck area. An interesting result of this design is that a relatively low force in transverse direction is necessary to lift the anchor. The POOL® superbox swivel can be connected directly to the anchor shank. No crown shackle is required. At the chain end it can be connected directly to the last common link of the chain. No endlink or adaptor piece is required. The POOL® TW anchor is available in standard and in fully-balanced execution. This enables the anchor in fully balanced execution to be smoothly stowed into an anchor pocket. The endshape of the shank of the POOL® TW anchor can be varied for application of all different types and dimensions of connecting parts. - Minimum length - Crownshackle not necessary - Endlink not necessary - Type approved by various classification societies HHP-POOL® TW Anchor - Low breakout force - Quick digging at minimum drag - Large fluke area - Repairable 4 Technical alterations reserved Technical alterations reserved 9 Ship`s Equipment Centre Bremen (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. Ship`s Equipment Centre Bremen (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. ® ® POOL ANCHOR POCKET DESIGN HHP-POOL N Anchors POOL® ANCHOR POCKET DESIGN HHP-POOL® N anchors The combination of a fully balanced POOL® anchor and a SEC anchor pocket design guarantees uncomplicated and efficient stowing in an anchor pocket. The POOL® N anchor is said to be the most beautiful anchor. Probably for this reason large yachts and cruise vessels are often equipped with this type of POOL® anchor. Starting on the 1st of January, 2001, the Dutch Shipping Inspection (SI) requires that every inland vessel is equipped with recessed anchor. The use of a recess avoids the possible damage caused by sticking out of the anchor edges in case of an accident. This does not mean that these anchors are not in use on board of cargo carriers. On the contrary, some of the biggest container shipping lines in the world equip all their vessels with this type of POOL® anchor. SEC has the know-how to design anchor pockets for POOL® anchors in the most optimum shape, completely adapted to the dimensions and the shape of the vessel. The flukes of POOL® N anchor are constructed out of two shaped plates, which are welded together. Therefore, the flukes of the POOL® N anchor are hollow. This construction gives the anchor a large resistance against bending forces. Integration of this kind of anchor pocket in ship’s hull has to be done in the preliminary design stage and in close co-operation with the shipyard’s design engineers. Efforts in this designing process are concentrated on finding the optimum combination between functionality of the anchor and availability of space in the hull. The extreme points of the POOL® N anchor are wider than the width of the crownplates. Consequently the anchor gives a very stable anchoring character. The POOL® N anchors are fully balanced, which enables them to be smoothly stowed in an anchor pocket. The endshape of the shank of the POOL® N anchor can be varied for application of all different types and dimensions of connecting parts. As part of the anchor pocket design SEC can provide: Sketch of side view over anchor chain or rope and a top view of the deck on which the winch and the anchor are situated. Outlining of anchor stowage. Dimensional sketch of anchor pocket. Advice on alterations to the already designed construction surrounding the position of the anchor pocket. HHP-POOL® N Anchor - Good stability - Easy stowing - Big Crownplates - Shortening of shank possible 8 Technical alterations reserved Technical alterations reserved 5 Ship`s Equipment Centre Bremen (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. Ship`s Equipment Centre Bremen (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. ® POOL ANCHORS FOR SHIPOWNERS AND SHIPYARDS Type approved by major classification societies: SEC’s High Holding Power POOL® anchors have the following advantages for shipyards and shipowners compared to other types 1.) Less weight (25%) 4.) Made of welded steel plate materials The original SEC POOL® anchors are High Holding Power anchors. This means that the POOL® anchor has proven to have at least two times the holding power of a conventional anchor. Classification societies allow a weight reduction by 25% relative to the weight according to the tables of equipment. Advantages: - Small dimensional deviations from the standard within tolerances given by the classification societies are easily carried out (such as shortening shank) - The anchor can easily be made out of other non-standard materials such as stainless steel etc. - When, in case of extreme circumstances, a POOL® anchor is damaged it can easily be repaired by replacing damaged parts. - Less weight to be carried during the lifetime of the vessel. - More safety because the remaining holding power is still at least 1.5 times the holding power of a conventional anchor. 2.) Fully-balanced (over-balanced) 5.) Made of welded steel plate materials The anchor flukes will always stay vertical when heaving the anchor. Advantages: - For extreme low ambient temperatures below -20°C the grade of steel plate materials can be adjusted, e. g. for arctic vessels with high ice class. - Damage to vessel’s hull is reduced - The anchor will always come home smoothly 3.) Smooth stowage into recess-type anchor pockets 6.) Large crown plates Due to unique characteristics all anchor motions during heaving and lowering of POOL® anchors are defined and known. This results in following advantages: The original SEC POOL® anchors have big crown plates which prevent the anchor from digging in too deep. This results in a relatively low breakout-force. Advantages: - “narrow anchor pocket” (please see next page) - No need for shipyard to carry out an anchor handling Mock-up test with a scale model 6 Technical alterations reserved - Quick and safe heaving - Fewer loss due to stuck anchors - Less damages to the anchor Technical alterations reserved 7
