Tomahawk Salon
Fleury Rose
10 Porter Ave., Brooklyn,
646-399-6873
The name Fleury Rose sounds
like it belongs on a perfume
bottle, not in rough-andtumble Bushwick. But Rose,
who works at the punky
Tomahawk Salon when she
isn't busy painting nails for
magazines (including this
one), has a cool aesthetic that
suits her edgy environment.
She buffed and shaped our
nails into perfect ovals with a
diamond file, then applied a
pewtershadethatshetopped
with blue and purple dots.
Next, she painted on a few
layers of topcoat, which
created a seamless mosaic
effect and a smooth, shiny
finish. Two weeks later,
strangers are still stopping
us on the street to ask who
does our nails. $55 and up.

Mezzanine Spa
Maria Myancela
62 Crosby St., 212-334-8100
We've always wanted to try a
medical pedicure-a noholds-barred obliteration of
calluses and cracked heels.
And Myancela's confident,
clinical approach didn't disappoint. She zeroed in on our
leathery soles, applying a glycolic peel and rasping away
every rough spot. Not only
were our feet smooth and supple, but the polish was precise
and shiny. $110.
At Rx Beauty Bar, clients
can book a simultaneous
manicure, pedicure,
and blowout.

Our technician snapped on
latex gloves, cracked open a
fresh set of tools, and got to
work. She scoured away our
calluses with a pumice stone,
then asked if we would like to
take it home ("If not, we'll
throw it away"). Next came a
foot-and-calf massage with
thick body butter. The polish
went on without a hitch, but
our legs felt greasy for hours.

Nusta Spa
Marina Lopez
1129 20th St., 202-530-5700
Lopez exfoliated our skin
with a salt scrub, slathered
our legs in a rich seaweed
mask, and slipped our feet
into plastic booties filled with
warm paraffin oil. A massage
relieved our tight calves, and
a faultless paint job left our
nails sparkling. Luxe Pedicure, $80.
Fix Beauty Bar
Linda Soedarmadji and Vicky Vagias
847 Lexington Ave., New York City, 212-744-0800
Whoever said that bad things come in threes never stopped
by this uptown salon for a simultaneous manicure, pedicure,
and blowout. Soedarmadji, our nail technician, steered us
away from the dark brown shade we selected, suggesting
a deep purple to suit our fair skin. While she filed our toes,
Vagias got to work on our blowout, smoothing out every kink.
Next, Soedarmadji moved on to our hands, giv i ng our nails
a squarish shape to go with our edgy polish . We left with
gleaming fingers, toes, and hair- a true triple threat. Full-On

The Spa at the Peninsula
Chicago
108 E. Superior St., 312-337-2888
We were tempted by this so-called holistic
pedicure and its aromatherapy massage.
Mter a warm soak, our therapist applied
acupressure to our arches, then slid hot
stones up and down our calves. Next came
paraffin wax, followed by glossy polish.
An hour later, we felt utterly revived, body
and sole. ESPA Holistic Feet, $100.

Cole Barlow
3909 W. 49th Y:z St., 952-915-2900
During our manicure, Barlow (a licensed
masseuse) launched into a reflexology
massage that melted tension in our wrists,
hands, and, oddly, the crooks of our arms.
The ho-hum products she used failed to
impress, but a week after the final coat of
polish, our fingernails remained chipfree. Montage Manicure, $36. *****

IF YOU'RE NOT WHITENING

We showed up cranky after a traffic snarl.
But once we sank into an armchair with a
glass of chardonnay, our tension disappeared. Our technician treated us to a toeto-knee massage, then plunged our feet
into warm paraffin before applying two
tidy coats of polish. This is one pedicure
we'll never be late for again. The Works

Los Angeles
Lemon Nails and Spa
15314 Antioch St., Pacific Palisades, CA,
310-454-1822
At first glance, there's nothing remarkable about this walk-in nail spot. In fact,
the cluttered countertops and small army
of technicians make the space feel
cramped. But once our pedicure took off,
things began to look up. Our technician
removed remnants of gel polish from our
toes, taking extra time to avoid damaging
our nails. While she worked, another
staffer meticulously filed our fingernails
before painting on streak-free polish.
Forty minutes later, we were too busy
planning a second visit to remember our
first impression. Manicure and pedicure,

Candy Paint
Yoko Sakakura
424Y:z N. Fairfax Ave.,
323-272-3930
We showed co-owner Sakakura a fabric
swatch and asked if she could re-create
the white-and-navy pattern on a few nails.
After filing and buffing, she proceeded to
draw lines on several of our fingers. We
marveled at her precision and patience
(she kept her head bent over our hands
for 30 minutes without breaking a sweat).
While her artwork dried, she painted our
remaining nails deep blue, adding a vinyllike topcoat. The design earned more
compliments than we could count on two
hands. $20 and up. *****
