Together, we will achieve our vision of a world free of MS! We cannot do this without you. A THANK YOU FROM THE TEAMS DEPARTMENT Our Walk MS teams truly dominated Walk MS 2012! What an AMAZING year! Just when the Teams Department thought we have seen it all each of you showed us more. Every day was a new, exciting adventure. Out of 11,865 participants, 10,391 of you were a team member on one of our 843 teams. As of July 19, 2012 our Walk MS teams have raised $1.5 million. There are no words to describe this outstanding accomplishment. You have left us speechless (a rare occurrence)! On behalf of the New Jersey Metro Chapter……THANK YOU! We look forward to continuing to work with each of you in 2013. --Alexis Stone & Allison Story, The Teams Department 1 WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? Each year, the NJ Metro Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society hosts a variety of fundraising events that help raise money for our chapter and bring us closer to a world free of MS. One question often on the minds of our dedicated fundraisers and donors: How do my contributions really help? Did you know the National MS Society funds more research, offers more services and provides more professional education programs than any other MS organization in the world? Alone, the NJ Metro Chapter provides over 100 programs and services to more than 10,000 people with MS, their families and caregivers. The vision of the Society is a World Free of MS; the mission is to mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. The bottom line is this: we couldn’t do it with you. The funds you raise help support: Programs & Services Research • Financial Assistance • Research Grants • Employment Assistance • Training Fellowships • Self-Help Groups • Fast Forward Initiative • Advocacy • MS Research Centers • Wellness Programs • High-Risk Pilot Research • Family Fun Outings • Research on Progressive MS • Long Term Care Programs Where the Dollars Go Most importantly, each dollar contributed cultivates hope and inspiration to people living with Multiple Sclerosis every day. The light at the end of the tunnel shines that much brighter when we all work together to reach our goal: A world free of MS. new housing development designed for people with MS and other disabilities, the first of its kind on the East Coast, opened in the Fall of 2011 in Freehold, NJ. An additional housing development in Lyndhurst, NJ is also ready for residents. The chapter provides over 100 programs and services to 10,000 individuals and their families in 14 New Jersey counties, including financial assistance, support groups, educational conferences and teleconferences and social programs like Kid’s Camp, Boy’s Night Out, Fall Bash and Family Fun Day. Five MS Centers have been established in New Jersey, including: Holy Name Hospital in Bergen County, St. Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center and The MS Diagnostic and Treatment Center at UMDNJ in Essex County, Robert Wood Johnson Center for MS in Middlesex County and the Linda E. Cardinale MS Center at CentraState Medical Center in Monmouth County. Unique wellness programs are provided at CentraState and Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation that are designed to optimize the quality of life for those living with the challenges of MS. For MS clients in Nursing Home or in Long-Term Care Facilities, our “Days Away” program provides a one day getaway, an annual Fall Nursing Home Luncheon is helf for them and their aides; an annual visit is made to each resident during the holidays by chapter staff; plus we provide educational teleconferences, social networking among residents, monthly conference calls to offer emotional support and a comprehensive training course for facility staff about MS. The chapter offers a Scholarship Program for those living locally who are impacted by MS. The chapter also gives a voice to people with MS by relentlessly advocating and championing the rights of people with disabilities, working to establish or improve community resources, helping people to advocate for themselves and by joining forces with individuals and/or organization who share our goals. Connection to highly skilled professionals whose job it is to help people navigate the challenges of MS is also available, in addition to a quarterly newsletter and ongoing email news, as well as a comprehensive website. A variety of exciting, unique and fun fundraising special events are offered, including Walk MS, Bike MS, MuckRuckus MS, “Women On the Move” Luncheons, “Musical Moments” Benefit Concert and Golf Outings to fund our programs and services and research towards a cure. The National MS Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by by MS.
