Part 1: The Investor’s Dilemma
May 4, 2016
By: J. André Weisbrod
SUMMARY
Global economies are shaky with some bright spots, but with
many problem economies.
The U.S. economy is sluggish, though still growing.
Interest rates are near historical lows and will probably rise over
the coming years.
Inflation has increased in spite of low gas prices. Inflation and
interest rates are generally linked over long periods of time.
Rising interest rates cause the value of bonds to go down. A rise
of 2 percentage points could result in longer term bonds losing as
much as 20% of their value. That is stock market kind of risk.
There are few places to place investments that have a good
probability of offering a “real return” above inflation and taxes
over the next 10 years.
This fact has helped support the stock and real estate markets. Other than companies and real estate, there is nowhere else to
put your money that can make you a real return.
However, stock markets are looking shaky and showing signs of
another retreat after recovering from the early 2016 drop. Values
have risen and now earnings and revenues appear to be slowing.
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 14
http://pplmag.com
Long term, it is unlikely that you will make a sufficient real return
above inflation and taxes unless you have a significant portion of
your investment capital in stocks and real estate.
Therefore your stock and real estate allocations and the
management of them are critical.
Consider a retiree’s challenge. If inflation

Where to Put Your Investments 2 - Age Group Strategies
Part 2: Strategies for Different People at Different Stages of
Life
May 17, 2016
By: J. André Weisbrod
Summary
Where to put your investment capital is a key consideration for
anyone.
Part 1 made a compelling case for equity investments for people
of all ages.
But there is a more important planning consideration that must
come first: Will you have or do you have enough capital? If you
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 15
http://pplmag.com
are not yet retired, are you investing enough of your income so
that you can become financially independent? If you are at
retirement age or already in retirement, do you have enough
capital to create an inflation-proof income for the rest of your
life? If not, then “retirement” (I prefer the word “independence”)
may not be an option. Sign up for a free membership on our
website and you can access many free planning Cool Tools.
Where to put your investments is a futile question if you haven’t
addressed the previous issue.
Once you have addressed the planning considerations, you can
then address where to put your investments.
When I was a young boy I would watch my father come home from
work, clear out his pockets full of keys and notes and money and put
them on his dresser. The change was put in a cardboard box. Read More

THE 10 QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD KNOW
A simple question can help you feel better, let you take better care
of yourself, or save your life. The questions below can get you
started.
1. What is the test for?
2. How many times have you done this procedure?
3. When will I get the results?
4. Why do I need this treatment?
5. Are there any alternatives?
6. What are the possible complications?
7. Which hospital is best for my needs?
8. How do you spell the name of that drug?
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 17
http://pplmag.com
9. Are there any side effects?
10. Will this medicine interact with medicines that I’m already
taking?
Prepare your questions
Time is limited during doctor visits. Prepare for your appointment by
thinking about what you want to do during your next visit. Do you
want to:
Talk about a health problem?
Get or change a medicine?
Get medical tests?
Talk about surgery or treatment options?
Write down your questions to bring to your appointment. The
answers can help you make better decisions, get good care, and feel
better about your health care.
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 18
http://pplmag.com
Understand the answers and next steps
Asking questions is important but so is making sure you hear—and
understand—the answers you get. Take notes. Or bring someone to
your appointment to help you understand and remember what you
heard. If you don’t understand or are confused, ask your doctor to
explain the answer again.
It is very important to understand the plan or next steps that your
doctor recommends. Ask questions to make sure you understand
what your doctor wants you to do.
The questions you may want to ask will depend on whether your
doctor gives you a diagnosis; recommends a treatment, medical test,
or surgery; or gives you a prescription for medicine.
Questions could include:
What is my diagnosis?
What are my treatment options? What are the benefits of each
option? What are the side effects?
Will I need a test? What is the test for? What will the results tell
me?
What will the medicine you are prescribing do? How do I take it?
Are there any side effects?
Why do I need surgery? Are there other ways to treat my
condition? How often do you perform this surgery?
Do I need to change my daily routine?
Find out what you are to do next. Ask for written instructions,
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 19

brochures, videos, or Web sites that may help you learn more.
After Your Appointment
Questions Are the Answer
You can make sure you get the best possible care by being an active
member of your health care team. Being involved means being
prepared and asking questions.
After you meet with your doctor, you will need to follow his or her
instructions to keep your health on track.
Your doctor may have you fill a prescription or make an another
appointment for tests, lab work, or a follow-up visit. It is important
for you to follow your doctor’s instructions.
It also is important to call your doctor if you are unclear about any
instructions or have more questions.
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 20
http://pplmag.com
Prioritize your questions
Create a list of follow-up questions to ask if you:
Have a health problem
Need to get or change a medicine
Need a medical test
Need to have surgery
Other times to call your doctor
There are other times when you should follow up on your care and
call your doctor. Call your doctor:
If you experience any side effects or other problems with your
medicines.
If your symptoms get worse after seeing the doctor.
If you receive any new prescriptions or start taking any
over-the-counter medicines.
To get results of any tests you’ve had. Do not assume that no

news is good news.
To ask about test results you do not understand.
Your questions help your doctor and health care team learn more
about you. Your doctor’s answers to your questions can help you
make better decisions, receive a higher level of care, avoid medical
harm, and feel better about your health care. Your questions can
also lead to better results for your health.

Roving Pittsburgher Report, Le Corsaire A Pirate Saga with
the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater Orchestra
Le Corsaire
A Pirate Saga with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater Orchestra
April 15, 2016
by Roving Pittsburgher Reporter, Joshua Kurnot My love affair with ballet begins with Le Corsaire. Friday
April 15, 2016 was my second, live, full-scale, professional ballet
theater experience. I was quickly seduced with its dynamic and
explosive character, movement, and scenery. In contrast, I did not
fall in love with ballet during my first experience during the
Pittsburgh Ballet Theater’s season opening performances
showcasing William Forsythe’s work. That stuff was way over my
head, too modern and stark for my understanding as a novice ballet
spectator. Le Corsairse’s classic themes made it easy to sympathize
with.
The stunning sets for this performance were made in
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 27
http://pplmag.com
Germany and brought from Uruguay after only their first use there.
Most striking was the grotto where the pirates hid out after stealing
their prize girl and looting the village. The rippling rocks of the cave
walls sparkled with gem stones and the allure of its hidden treasures
within while the captain of pirates, his bare chested slave, and his
newly stolen beauty danced to entertain the troops, but mutiny
quickly ensued.
The obvious crowd favorite that night was the
bare-chested slave to the pirate captain being
danced by Ruslan Mukhambetkaliyev. This guy was the muscle
behind stealing the prized beauty for the pirates and also stealing
the entire show that night. It was a shame that the ladies didn’t even
have the chance to really captivate the audience, but that’s because
the ballet wasn’t created to showcase the female dynamic. This
Russian style ballet showed off the power and strength of the male
dancers. Ruslan’s training at the Almaty Ballet Academy in
Kazakhstan and later performances as a soloist with the Moscow
City Ballet and principle with the Russian National Ballet made him
perfect for his role. His jumps were the highest, his lines were the
strongest, and his endurance was obvious as he effortlessly
performed big trick after big trick while being fueled by the
excitement and cheers from the audience. The coolest part of having
a live orchestra in the pit was that when Ruslan or any other dancer
got on a role breaking out the really impressive moves, the maestro
could sense the excitement from the audience and direct impromptu
repetitions in the musical arrangements to accommodate and
accentuate their performances. The synergy between the dancers,
musicians, and audience was totally and completely electrifying.
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 28
http://pplmag.com
Anna-Marie Holmes was the night’s guest of honor. In some way she
owns Le Corsaire legally, but artistically she is the absolute
authority on its creative subtleties. Talk-back discussions after the
performance revealed her humble dedication to the original ideals of
the ballet, but also highlighted her passion to perfect it. Many
questions were about the originality of the sets, music scores, and
choreography. Anna-Marie’s eloquent response to these prying
questions was honest statements that exemplified how many of the
world’s greatest artistic performances were conglomerations of
artistic collaboration through many decades of dedication and hard
work.

Cirque de La Symphonie which performed with the Pittsburgh

Symphony orchestra April 29 thru May 1, 2016 is a breathtaking
bucket list addition if you have not seen it. It is quite simply a
marriage of exciting movement and music with unique elements of
danger and comedy when the aerial hoop and aerial silk artists
swing out over the symphony crowd.
The sound track other than the music were gasps, chuckles and
sighs of relief just when you thought an aerial movement would not
make it. This performance had something for everyone both the
casual circus crowd and the elegantly dressed regular symphony
devotees. Every time I attend I think “oh my granddaughter would love this
but I am always so excited to attend myself that I do forget to see if
she can come out on a school night. Sorry Anaiyah. Next year,
remind me.

Page 31

Many of the performers perform double acts as Ms. Gavre and Mr.
Binayamin. Talk about role reversals, in their performance to “Por
Una Cabeza,” in an acrobatic tango. Ms. Gavre lifts Mr. Binayamin
proving that a petite woman can actually balance a muscle bound
man.
Mr. Tsarkov is quite resplendent in the most colorful and comedic
sequined jester’s outfit as he performs to “Devil’s Dance,” juggling
like you have never seen it before.
If you studied geometry in high school or college you might wonder
how Mr. Streltsov managed to twirl large cubes on the palm of his
hand to the upbeat tempo of “Les Toreadors.”
Ms Gavre again proves her strength and dexterity with the spinning
hoops dangling high above the stage and the audience. Not to be
outdone Ms Tsarkove does a ballet on the uneven pedestals with
spinning acrobatics and poses. The audience is
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 32
http://pplmag.com
sure she would have no trouble getting a date as she poses very
sensually to “Bacchanale” from “Samson and Delilah” She is also
the quick change artist, donning six different outfits right on stage.
But the PSO is not to be outdone by all of this “big top” excitement
and performs stupendously on their own with “Espana.” and later “A
Comedy Tonight” from “A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum.”
Mr. Steltsov and Ms Van Loo are spectacular on the aerial silks
performing dreamily to the Waltz from Swan Lake and also sprach
Zarathustra, Opus 30.
The big moment though as you can see from the pictures was the big
top finale of Jarek and Darek acrobatics, what feats of strength and
synchronicity and seemingly impossible acrobatic poses. Some will
remember Jarek and Darek from “America’s Got Talent.”
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 33

For those who stayed for the post symphony talk, the conversation
from performers and conductor Jack Everly was both humorous and
informative. Conductor Everly’s banter in between numbers during
the performance kept the audience enthralled with not only his
symphonic ability but his glib sense of humor.
In a town where sports is king and the symphony is like the regal
Queen of England, both symphony audiences and sports fans
cheered so loudly it could have been over one of our hometown
teams having a big win. This was definitely a big win for the
Pittsburgh Symphony and La Cirque.

Roving Pittsburgher Report, Le Corsaire A Pirate Saga with the
Pittsburgh Ballet Theater Orchestra
by Roving Pittsburgher Reporter, Joshua Kurnot My love affair with ballet begins with Le Corsaire.

That stuff was way over my
head, too modern and stark for my understanding as a novice ballet
spectator. Le Corsairse’s classic themes made it easy to sympathize
with.

Symphonie a Big Win in a Sports Town Cirque de La Symphonie which performed with the Pittsburgh

Roving Pittsburgher Report, A MODERN OPERA GERTRUDE
STEIN AND ALICE TOBIAS THE TALK OF PARIS
Pittsburgh has many jewels in its cultural crown. One of the
brightest jewels is the Pittsburgh Opera. The 77th season began

larger than life novelist, poet, playwright, and Pittsburgh native Gertrude Stein and her partner Alice B. Toklas, 27 will delight you
with Ricky Ian Gordon’s “tuneful score” and Royce Vavrek’s
“quick-witted libretto.” Read the full review here

FINANTA was created in 1996, and has since distinguished itself for
delivering services such as access to capital, technical assistance
and credit building to low-to-moderate income entrepreneurs and
first-time homebuyers in Philadelphia who face cultural, social and
language barriers. This approach has allowed FINANTA to help
economically disadvantaged businesses to succeed for the long-term
and create 1,500 jobs, and individuals and families who are
borrowing for the first time, with more than 1,200 loans totaling
over $45 million.
“For 20 years, FINANTA has economically empowered
Philadelphia-area entrepreneurs through its lending and technical
assistance services,” said FINANTA President Luis Mora-Rechnitz.
“We have distinguished ourselves by delivering services in a way
which is acutely conscious of the cultural, social, and language
barriers many of our clients encounter. FINANTA’s innovative
approach to economic self-sufficiency comes from years of research
that led us to emphasize credit-building as the foundation for
growth. The Jody C. Raskind award is a great honor for us and I’m
very proud that FINANTA has won it.”
FINANTA participates in SBA’s Microloan and PRIME Programs, and
is a Treasury-certified Community Development Financial
Institution. In FY2015, FINANTA closed 185 SBA Microloans for
$1.6 million, making it the fourth highest-ranking SBA Microlender
in terms of both number and dollars of microloans closed in the
country. As part of its PRECAPS (PRE-CAPital = credit building training +

borrowing) lending model, FINANTA has made 796 loans ranging
from $600 - $25,000, totaling $4 million since it established this
model. Ninety-seven percent of these loans were directed to minority
borrowers ranging from low-income to extremely low-income. This
focus on very low income populations is widely acknowledged as
some of the most difficult but critical microlending to do
successfully.
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) was created in 1953
and since January 13, 2012 has served as a Cabinet-level agency of
the federal government to aid, counsel, assist and protect the
interests of small business concerns, to preserve free competitive
enterprise and to maintain and strengthen the overall economy of
our nation. The SBA helps Americans start, build and grow
businesses. Through an extensive network of field offices and
partnerships with public and private organizations, the SBA delivers
its services to people throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, the
U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.
National Small Business Week is an annual event organized by SBA
to recognize the achievements of the top small businesses in the
nation and recognizes the small business community’s contribution
to the American economy. Since 1963, the President of the United
States has issued a proclamation calling for the celebration of
National Small Business Week. This year’s National Small Business
Week was recognized from May 1-7 with national events planned in
Washington, D.C., New York, Atlanta, Denver, Phoenix, Oakland and
San Jose, Calif. SBA’s Eastern Pennsylvania awards are local
observances of the annual Presidentially-designated National Small
Business Week.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
MANFRED HONECK has served as music director of the
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since the 2008-2009 season.
Together with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Honeck’s widely
celebrated performances and distinctive interpretations continue to
receive international recognition. To great acclaim, Honeck and the
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra regularly perform in major music
capitals and festivals, among them the BBC Proms, Musikfest Berlin,
Lucerne Festival, Rheingau Musik Festival, Beethovenfest Bonn,
Grafenegg Festival, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Honeck and
the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra have also built a close
relationship with the Musikverein in Vienna. Following a week-long
residency in 2012, they will return once again for three
performances in the course of an extensive tour of Europe in spring
2016. Honeck’s successful work with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 84
http://pplmag.com
has been extensively documented on recordings with the Reference
and Exton labels. The first SACD released by Reference Records of
Strauss tone poems, drew rave reviews. The second recording, of
Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 and the Symphonic Suite from Janáček’s
opera Jenůfa, conceptualized by Honeck himself, was nominated for
a Grammy Award. Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 was released in
February 2015 to critical acclaim, including a second Grammy
nomination, and Beethoven 5 & 7 was released in November 2015.
The next recording, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 and a suite of
Dvořák’s Rusalka, will be released on May 13. Several recordings,
among them Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, which won a 2012
International Classical Music Award, are also available on the
Japanese label Exton.
As a guest conductor, Honeck has worked with the world’s leading
orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic,
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony
Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Staatskapelle Dresden,
London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris and Accademia di
Santa Cecilia Rome. In the United States, Honeck has conducted the
New York Philharmonic, The Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago
Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia
Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestra. He is also a regular
guest at the Verbier Festival. In 2013, Honeck gave his successful
debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, resulting in a CD
recording of Dvořák together with Anne-Sophie Mutter for Deutsche
Grammophon, which received an Echo Klassik award in 2014. The
2015-2016 season sees him return to Bamberg, Stuttgart, Rome,
Stockholm and New York, as well as the Munich Philharmonic,
London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra,

among others.
Born in Austria, Honeck received his musical training at the
Academy of Music in Vienna. Many years of experience as a member
of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra
and at the helm of the Vienna Jeunesse Orchestra have given his
conducting a distinctive stamp. Honeck began his career as assistant
to Claudio Abbado in Vienna. Subsequently, he was engaged by the
Zurich Opera House, where he was bestowed the prestigious
European Conductor’s Award in 1993. Honeck was one of three
main conductors of the MDR Symphony Orchestra in Leipzig and in
Oslo, he assumed the post of music director at the Norwegian
National Opera and was engaged as principal guest conductor of the
Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. From 2000 to 2006, he was music
director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Stockholm
and, from 2008 to 2011, principal guest conductor of the Czech
Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he resumed for another three
years at the beginning of the 2013-2014 season.
From 2007 to 2011, Honeck was music director of the Staatsoper
Stuttgart where he conducted premieres including Berlioz’s Les
Troyens, Mozart’s Idomeneo, Verdi’s Aida, Richard Strauss’s
Rosenkavalier, Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites and Wagner’s
Lohengrin and Parsifal, as well as numerous symphonic concerts.
His operatic guest appearances include Semperoper Dresden,
Komische Oper Berlin, Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, Royal
Opera of Copenhagen, the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg
and the Salzburg Festival.
Honeck has received honorary doctorates from St. Vincent College
in Latrobe, Pennsylvania and, most recently, from Carnegie Mellon

University in Pittsburgh. Moreover, he has been artistic director of
the “International Concerts Wolfegg” in Germany for more than 20
years.
The PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, celebrating 120
years of music in 2016, is credited with a rich history of the world’s
finest conductors and musicians, and a strong commitment to the
Pittsburgh region and its citizens. Past music directors have
included Fritz Reiner (1938-1948), William Steinberg (1952-1976),
Andre Previn (1976-1984), Lorin Maazel (1984-1996) and Mariss
Jansons (1995-2004). This tradition of outstanding international
music directors was furthered in fall 2008, when Austrian conductor
Manfred Honeck became music director of the Pittsburgh
Symphony. The orchestra has been at the forefront of championing
new American works, and gave the first performance of Leonard
Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1 “Jeremiah” in 1944 and John Adams’
Short Ride in a Fast Machine in 1986. The Pittsburgh Symphony has
a long and illustrious history in the areas of recordings and radio
concerts. As early as 1936, the Pittsburgh Symphony broadcast on
the airwaves coast-to-coast and in the late 1970s it made the ground
breaking PBS series “Previn and the Pittsburgh.” The orchestra has
received increased national attention since 1982 through network
radio broadcasts on Public Radio International, produced by
Classical WQED-FM 89.3, made possible by the musicians of the
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. With a long and distinguished
history of touring both domestically and overseas since
1900—including international tours to Europe, the Far East and

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has overseen one of Pittsburgh’s most
historic transformations: turning a seedy red-light district into a
magnet destination for arts lovers, residents, visitors, and business
owners. Founded in 1984, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a
non-profit arts organization whose mission is the cultural and
economic revitalization of a 14-block arts and
entertainment/residential neighborhood called the Cultural District.
The District is one of the country’s largest land masses “curated” by
a single nonprofit arts organization. A major catalytic force in the
city, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a unique model of how
public-private partnerships can reinvent a city with authenticity,
innovation and creativity. Using the arts as an economic catalyst, the
Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has holistically created a world-renowned
Cultural District that is revitalizing the city, improving the regional
economy and enhancing Pittsburgh’s quality of life. Thanks to the
support of foundations, corporations, government agencies and
thousands of private citizens, the Cultural Trust stands as a national
model of urban redevelopment through the arts. Follow us on
