ENTREVISTA CON UN ZOMBI
Y 49 OTROS
Welcome! The goal of this book is to get students talking Spanish and to enjoy doing so.
The interview is an excellent vehicle for conversation in language courses. The best way to start
a conversation, after all, is to ask a question. The interview puts two people face to face in a social
context, has a guiding and supportive structure, and may also be used for impromptu proficiencybased practice. The interview encourages the expression of individuality and creativity. Students
traditionally answer questions most often in class; with interviews they can practice asking them.
FEATURES OF THIS BOOK
 50 scripted interviews with 15 questions in each one. For 47 of them, the students interview
the characters. For three of them, the character is interviewing the student (psychiatrist, job
interview, and the reporter.)
 a wide array of 50 colorful and charming characters, starting with the zombie, that are sure
to delight.
 the predominant use of basic Spanish and the present tense.
 vocabulary notes at the bottom of each interview.
 opportunities for students to add their own questions to any interview.
 a blank sheet for original student interviews that can be used over and over again. Students
draw or paste clip art characters or photos of favorite celebrities and write interview questions.
 small cards for the 50 characters that can be cut out and used for speaking activities.
MANY LEVELS MAY BENEFIT
1) BEGINNERS The vocabulary is very basic and the present tense is used is most cases so
advanced beginners can conduct the interviews with support and learn some
new words.
2) INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED STUDENTS They respond with more sophisticated Spanish
vocabulary, tenses, and structures to create more interesting interviews.

BENEFITS
1. Students engage in speaking, either guided or proficiency-based.
2. Students hear Spanish questions repeated and become more familiar with them.
3. Students get valuable practice using interrogatives and asking questions.
4. The interviews can be used to introduce or review units on vocabulary or structures.
5. The interviews recycle the Spanish the students have studied.
6. The interviews increase students’ fluency, vocabulary, and confidence.
BASIC PROCEDURES
1. TWOs: Assign an interview. Students work in twos. One student role plays the character.
2. NAMES: The students use the suggested name or create their own names for the people.
3. RESIDENCE: The characters are all heritage speakers, living in Spain, Latin America, or in another
Spanish-speaking place. The students determine where the characters are from and/or live.
4. PREPARED OR IMPROMPTU: Students may be given a chance to do some advance preparation
or use interviews for pure proficiency exercises with neither notes, scripts, nor preparation.
5. SHORT ANSWERS vs COMPLETE SENTENCES: Students are told which approach to use.
6. PERSONALITIES: Voices, mannerisms, gestures, and attitudes can create characters’ personalities.
7. SERIOUS OR HUMOROUS: The interviews may be serious or humorous.
8. OVERVIEW: Vocabulary and structures may be presented as needed before the students begin.
9. SEGMENTS: All the questions or 5, 8, or 10 may be assigned. They may be assigned 5 at a time.
10. MICROPHONES: Some toy microphones on hand can enhance the interviews. Option: paint stirrers
11. PHOTO BACKGROUNDS: Display Internet photos on the SMART Board screen from any Spanishspeaking countries relating to characters. Ex. skate park, monument, soccer stadium, space ship,
gym, science lab, panadería, circus, castle, etc. These make the interviews come alive.
12. ON-LOCATION SETS: Create sets where students can come up front to present or practice the
interviews. Ex. TV talk show set, concert stage, robotics lab, restaurant, airplane cockpit, etc.

● One Card Per Pair
Partners use one card drawn at random, taking turns saying something about the character.
● Two Cards Per Pair
Both students draw a card. They take turns saying one thing about each other’s characters.
Then they impersonate their characters and chat. They switch roles. They switch classmates.
