ACT JeepTrAction Newsletter Edition 16 — October 2015 Inside this issue ... Presidents note… Hi all, since our last newsletter there has been quite a bit happening within the club. There has been a club joint trip with ACTATC, a wine tour of the Bungendore region, club meetings/presentations, a social night at NTW, the Big Boys Toys Expo & of course Jambo! So I will do my best to recap every event. On the 9th of August we had the Canberra District wine lovers trip which visited vineyards in the Lake George region. The trip was attended by Slattery’s, McDonalds, new club members the Reid’s & the Simmons’. The day started off a bit frosty but cleared, making for enjoyable visits to Lake George, Lerida Estate, Lark Hill & Mt Majura vineyards & lunch at Lake George Hotel. On the 11th August we had another Club social night at NTW which was kicked off with a sausage sizzle & a few drinks. Mark Pullen lead us a through a great presentation on the latest & greatest products available from Mickey Thompson. The Big Boys Toys Expo took place on 22nd— 23rd August & was held out at EPIC. Our club had a healthily representation with Jeep City handing out club brochures & using our club marquee as part of their stand. The weekend was well received by Canberra & more than likely will be on the calendar again next year for Canberra. Troy Rollan organised a club joint Trip with ACTATC on Saturday the 29th of August. The trip took in the region of Monga National Park with 8 Jeeps from our club. The trip provided many challenging steep hill climbs & several river crossings which had all recently swelled due to heavy rain down-pours in the area. At our September club meeting we were very lucky to have a special presentation on getting the best out of your digital camera by Andrew Kay, Canberra High School Digital Technology & Arts Teacher. In a past life, Andrew was the head photographer for a leading advertising agency responsible for marketing major brands in Australia. Andrew gave a great presentation & revealed a lot of tips & techniques to help get the best out our digital cameras. This years Australian National Jeep Jamboree took place at Rydal in the Blue Mountains district of NSW, saw a large number of club members attend the event with the Foulds, Bartell’s, new members the Adam’s, Newman’s, Bilski’s, Slattery’s & the Simmons’ all present. The Goulburn Big Merino service centre was our main rendezvous point with 9 Jeeps in convoy. Once everyone had assembled & had breakfast the convoy setout for Rydal via Oberon. Arriving at Jambo around midday we were warmly greeted by the SJC team as we registered. Upon choosing a camp site it was quite clear that the grounds camping & trail mustering areas, compared to 2012 was significantly more dusty, however after inspecting a few sites we claimed our camp site near the test track. (Possibly a bad decision!). Later that night up at the Marquee we were given a brief run down of all the proceedings & collected our rego packs & signed on for the next days trip. Over the course of the weekend their were many trails that took in noted places like Lake Lyell, Mt Walker, Mt Airlie, the Spanish Steps, Waterfall, the Glowworm Tunnel, Zig Zag & even a trip to the famous Mt Panorama Racing Circuit at Bathurst which lead out the largest convoy of the weekend with 58 Jeeps. Once people had returned from their daily trips there were plenty of activities on back at camp site with daily kids rides, live bands, a huge sponsor prize raffle & even a karaoke night up in the marquee & of course the Saturday night feed. Saturday morning saw all the vehicles line up for a Show & shine & this gave everyone plenty of opportunity to wander around & inspect other vehicles, drool & covet other Jeeps & mods & even purchase Jeep related products from the sponsor stalls. The weekend was a great event & was well attended by all clubs & states of Australia In addition to all of these events, please join with me in welcoming new members, Angela & Shea Reid & Jo & Allen Adam’s to our club. We are all looking forward to seeing you at the next meeting! Regards, Paul Simmons Club Happenings... Canberra District Wine Lovers Trip National Jeep Jamboree 2015 Jeep Through the Years — Part 3 continued... 1976 -1986 CJ-7. The CJ-7 featured an optional new automatic allwheel drive system called Quadra-Trac, as well as a part-time two-speed transfer case; anautomatic transmission was also an option. Other features included an optional molded hardtop, & steel doors. The CJ-7 was also available in Renegade & an upgraded Laredo model. 1981 -1986 CJ-8 Scrambler. The Jeep CJ-8 was a long wheel-base version of the CJ-7, introduced in 1981 & manufactured through 1986. The term "Scrambler" comes from an appearance package that many CJ-8's were equipped with, which included tape graphics & special wheels. Former President Ronald Reagan owned a CJ-8 & used it on his California Ranch. There were only 230 produced and sold in the U.S. It was also widely sold in Venezuela & Australia as the CJ8 Overlander, with small differences including full length rear windows on the Overlander. 1981-1985 Jeep CJ-10 The Jeep CJ-10 was a CJ-bodied pickup truck based on a heavily modified Jeep J10 pickup truck. Produced from 1981 to 1985, it was sold and designed for export markets; Australia in particular. They featured square headlights mounted in the fenders and a nine-slot grille, a homage to the Willys MB used in World War II; all other civilian Jeeps had a seven-slot grille. The CJ-10 could have either a hardtop or a softtop. 1987-1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ The Wrangler debuted in 1986 as a new model to fill the void left by the discontinuance of the famous Jeep model (CJ), which was revised in 1996, and completely redesigned in 2007. YJ models were manufactured between 1986 & 1992 at Brampton Assembly, and subsequently at the Toledo South Assembly plant.[A major difference in the 1987-1995 models were the rectangular headlights, which reverted to rounded ones in the TJ & then JK versions. 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ This updated Wrangler featured a coil-spring suspension (based on that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee) for better ride and handling, and a return to the classic CJ's round headlamps. 2007— Present Jeep Wrangler JK The JK series 2007 Wrangler Unlimited was unveiled at the New York Auto Show on April 12, 2006. It is stretched even more than the TJ model, & featured four doors. This change made it the last-remaining 2door SUV in North America to gain a four-door option & made it the only four door convertible in production. It hit production line in August 2006 & was priced near $21,000. 1984 –1996 XJ Cherokee Introduced for the 1984 model year the XJ was the first Jeep with a ladder-boxed chassis integrated into a single monocoque unit rather than the traditional separate body-on-frame construction. A variation on the Cherokee from 1984 to 1990 was the Jeep Wagoneer. The XJ remains a popular vehicle among offroading enthusiasts. Its design has been noted as one of the greatest of all time. Popular Mechanics listed the XJ as one of "the 25 greatest boxy cars of all time". 2002 – 2012 Jeep Liberty/Cherokee (KJ/KK) Introduced as a replacement for the XJ Cherokee, the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee.
