Occupational therapists offer rehabilitative care at hospitals and centres, catering to the needs of accident victims, spastic and intellectually challenged children. An occupational therapist may opt to work in hospitals, community based rehabilitation centres, nursing homes, schools (special education), industrial and commercial organisations, educational institutions, and in private practice. The Perdana University School of Occupational Therapy (PUScOT) is currently offering a degree programme in occupational therapy. Its first intake is in Sept 2014. It is a 4 year / 8 semester degree programme, developed in consultation with the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. The programme offers 1,360 clinical hours and fulfils the 1,000 hours required by the WFOT. This programme includes two specialized modules – occupational therapy in sexuality and disability & occupational therapy in elderly care. These are only offered at PUScOT. WFOT personnel are also on board as advisors for the curriculum and the programme also includes adjunct renowned faculty from Australia, the US, Philippines and Singapore. The dean of PUScOT is Professor Nathan Vytialingam. He is also the President of Asia Pacific Occuaptional Therapist Regional Group, and the former Vice President of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. The faculty also includes academicians with different expertise in the fields of occupational therapy such as hand therapy, mental health, work rehabilitation and paediatrics. The 2,805 graduates received their diplomas and certificates at the Chancellor Hall, Management & Science University (MSU). A total of 2,560 graduates were conferred diplomas and 245 were given certificates from four schools – School of Health Sciences, School of Business Management & Professional Studies, School of Hospitality & Culinary Arts and School of Information Sciences & Engineering. The graduation ceremony was officiated by PTPL Group of Colleges chairman, Tan Sri Dr Wan Mohd Zahid Mohd Noordin. In his speech, MSU and PTPL Group of Colleges president Prof Datuk Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid said the increasing number of graduates showed PTPL had gained the people’s trust as a college committed to producing students of high caliber. A lot of importance was given to ensure courses offered had relevance to the prevailing job market and that students obtained multiple skills. “We want to ensure these students fulfil industry requirement and display exemplary performance in their jobs. The percentage of graduates who obtain employment within six months of graduation is increasing by the year and this is something to be proud of. “This proves that PTPL College is truly committed to train students, who are not only brilliant in studies, but also display high moral values.” Nur Fatin Syahirah Rasudin,a Medical Laboratory Technologist graduate, was awarded the Anugerah Emas Presiden while 10 others received the Anugerah Khas Presiden. This programme aims to explain the central concepts in Fashion Design through practical and theoretical approaches covered thus allowing students a good overview of conception through to completion of any concept.
